So we got a new silver lab puppy back in November and named her Georgia; you've probably seen her a couple of times in these pages. She took the place of, but could never replace our 11-yearold chocolate lab, Molly. My wife said to me one time, "Pets are a big part of your life but they are just a part. You are their whole world." That really hit me and made me think about the impact we have on our pets' lives. If we leave, they wait patiently for us to return. If we sleep in, they're up and ready to play, eat or just hang out with us. Owners typically outlive their pets, and I now feel like I have a responsibility to make this dog's life as happy and meaningful as possible.
As I thought about what my wife said, I started to realize this holds some truth for kids as well. I was watching a comedian and he made a joke about kids being little hostages. For at least the first 15 years of their lives, they are totally dependent upon what we want them to do. As babies and toddlers, they eat, sleep and play when we want, if we're lucky. As children and young teenagers, they begin to develop some independence but are still reliant on us for just about everything. We are their whole world and they see us as heroes. There's nothing cuter than walking into their bedroom and they're standing in the crib with bright eyes waiting for us.
All of the sudden, somewhere around when they get a driver's license, poof, you're barely a part of their world anymore. In fact, they'd really prefer you just stay out of their business, unless of course they need you for something. When those opportunities come, the opportunity to be a part of their world again, we grasp on to them and come running. We want to be their heroes again and that's OK, because as they grow up, get real jobs and start their own families, we get to do it all over again. Just the fun parts though, the grandparent parts.
Welcome to this addition of Greenwood City Lifestyle, the Kids and Pets edition. We've put together some stories we hope you'll enjoy as well as offer some valuable resources to up your parent game, whether for kids or pets.

Dogtopia, Top Tier K9 Pros Provide Endless Love, Trusted Support To Canines And Pet Parents
“The gift which I am sending you is called a dog, and is in fact the most precious and valuable possession of mankind,” stated Theodorus Gaza, 15th century humanist/ Latin translator of Ancient Greek philosopher and scholar Aristotle.
Humans and dogs have lived together for tens of thousands of years, and for the majority of that period, dogs were invaluable partners and companions working alongside people in critical capacities, such as hunting, farming, protecting and surviving life. Now, more so as home-oriented pets, the mental and physical benefits derived by humans from dogs are still numerous gifts. Just ask Greenwood regional dog trainer Ken Weadick.
"Everybody deserves a dog. Dogs can help people be more active, and burn calories to maintain healthy weights. Dogs also help us feel less lonely, reduce our anxiety levels and improve our moods. Socially, dogs help people feel less isolated because
they provide companionship and unconditional love," Ken states.
Canine connections certainly have shaped Ken's life over the past few years. He became chief obedience officer and franchise owner for Dogtopia of Greenwood during August 2020. Then he became a certified pet trainer and certified foundation trainer of Top Tier K9 Greenwood starting in March 2023. Through his dedication and former 25-year career as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), he supported adults with developmental disabilities and children diagnosed with autism. He holds graduate degrees in education and psychology.
While Ken says ownership of Dogtopia of Greenwood presently is transferring to his son, Nick Weadick, along with Top Tier K9 trainer Jennifer Mutz, he will still be present and involved in the operations, namely through launching on the premises a dog-driven nonprofit titled The Heeling Place.
“
"Everybody deserves a dog."
~Ken Weadick, Greenwood regional dog trainer
Ken recently completed certification as a master pet trainer and completed coursework in service dog training and protection dog training.
Jen completed training, along with passing qualifying exams and practical evaluations through Top Tier K9, to also achieve the level of certified pet trainer. She's currently pursuing certification as a foundation dog trainer and also recently completed certification as a master pet trainer. She formerly served as operations manager at Dogtopia of Greenwood where she worked since its founding.
"Jen quickly moved up within Dogtopia due to her work ethic, and genuine care for the dogs and support of their owners. We're pleased to work together in several capacities," asserts Ken.
Nick has been involved with Dogtopia of Greenwood prior to its inception, completing initial corporate training in Phoenix and attending conferences, ongoing training and strategy sessions since 2020.
Ken says the new nonprofit initiative will allow him to train rescued dogs before they're adopted. "I'll serve as a family dog mediator and will provide a global assessment of each dog, along with history of the breed or mix, its instincts and its learning habits. I can inform and train owners regarding what to expect and how to best communicate with their dogs."
He adds, "Through the nonprofit, we'll also produce training videos for pet parents, to ensure they can maintain the training at a high level and to educate them on the best approaches to integrate their particular dog into their lifestyle. Taking into account their learning history, considering environmental factors, exploring genetic tendencies of their chosen breed, and last but certainly not least accounting for the individual differences that each dog brings to the table."

During 2009, Anthony 'Tony' Scellato says Bargersvillebased YES Ministries was born out of a love for youth and desire to reach them with the gospel of Jesus Christ. "Add to that a passion for missions, and you have the heart of YES Ministries," Tony relays as the co-founder and president of the nonprofit.
He says the group's charitable efforts are about protecting kids spiritually, physically and emotionally, while training youths to become disciples of Jesus.
According to United Nations Children's Fund statistics, a child becomes an orphan every 18 seconds. That's 8,400 children per day. Worldwide, there are more than
153 million children who are orphaned. Of the 153 million orphans worldwide, Tony says 9-12 million reside in Latin America and the Caribbean islands.
This group's first missions' trip occurred during December 2011 to the island of Grenada associated with prior relationships with two pastors in Grenada due to Tony having taken his first missions' trip there when he was 19 years old. Since then, the group completed two other mission trips.
Since beginning 15 years ago, Tony says he has desired to establish children’s homes for orphaned and uncared for children throughout the Caribbean region. As of May 1, 2024, YES purchased land on the island of St. Vincent and was granted approval for plans to build their first children’s home, Covenant House of St. Vincent. Tony adds they hope to build a Covenant House of Grenada in the future on existing church property.
"Every life has value and worth, no matter where someone finds themselves. What makes
YES Ministries unique is our view of kids. We view youths like Jesus viewed youths. Jesus, our greatest model of all things, showed us key aspects of how our ministry should be characterized when it comes to kids," he adds.
Tony, himself an adoptee, says prayers for their initiatives are golden.
"We love seeing youth give their heart and life to Jesus and to come alongside them to help them grow in their faith," states Tony, who also serves as youth pastor at The Light Church in Bargersville.
To donate to this ministry, the group accepts:

Fishing embodies a number of qualities that make it quite beneficial to nurturing well-rounded kids. Indeed, fishing for youths can be exciting, interesting and interactive, especially with the support of local community leaders.
Jason Roberts, Honey Creek Tackle & Marine Center owner, says he's a big proponent of B.A.S.S. Nation Series, which is a global network of locally organized fishing clubs whose members participate in and support a range of activities, including tournaments, conservation initiatives and youth programs. B.A.S.S. was formed in 1968 to promote and encourage fishing.
"Fishing can impart to youths a lifelong sense of wonder and adventure." ~Jason Roberts, owner of Honey Creek Tackle & Marine Center in Bargersville.
Locally, Jason sponsors the activities of members of the area's junior and high school chapter clubs, often funding plaques and gift cards as rewards and for competitions. "In our region, these clubs have about six fishing tournaments a year with 100 boats. It's two anglers per boat, plus their observer. In addition to being their largest sponsor, we help out as observers when needed," he says.
"I really enjoy helping youth in this sport, and to witness their enthusiasm. Some kids that I've assisted at their junior levels have gone on to buy boats from me as adults. It's so nice to develop long-term relationships," he adds.
"B.A.S.S. High School Nation clubs foster leadership, problem solving and public speaking skills, promote environmental awareness and responsibility, as well as teach kids the fun of fishing," assures Eric Bland, Indiana B.A.S.S. youth director since 2019.
In addition to tournament competitions, Eric says B.A.S.S. High School Nation club activities cover interesting areas, such as how-to clinics, guest speakers and safety programs.
"Honey Creek, spearheaded by Jason's support, is an amazing partner for our statewide youth program, especially through providing plaques and prizes," Eric shares.
Youths interested in joining or starting a fishing club may reach Eric at ibnyouthdirector@gmail.com.

As parent of three young children, Jessica Schmollinger assures she understands the importance of safe, exceptional educational opportunities. As franchise owner of Primrose School of Greenwood at 5164 N. State Road 135 since 2023, Jessica says she extends that same level of care and support to children of other families.
"As an education professional, I've been familiar with Primrose Schools for many years. However, the importance of exceptional early learning experiences didn't come to the forefront until my husband and I began to grow our family," she says. "We value immersing our children in culture, community, character and educational experiences."

Jessica says the Primrose Schools' approach allows children to truly strengthen developmental skills. "'Who children become is as important as what they know' is a core belief within our school's Balanced Learning approach. We stand out with the children being engulfed in life skills, PE, math, science and Spanish, even student-led learning."
She says the school's exclusive early learning approach balances purposeful play with nurturing teachers' guidance to encourage curiosity, creativity, confidence and compassion.
"We deliver more than a curriculum; it’s a life-changing early learning experience for children," she adds.
Early childhood education is a proven passion for Jessica. She says she's always wanted to teach and serve children. After receiving an education degree at Indiana University, she relocated to Sydney, Australia, where she taught students ages 6-8. Upon returning to Greenwood, she taught several years of K-2 instruction. Prior to establishing a Primrose School, she worked as
an education consultant to train educators to use educational technology.
Primrose Schools is a national system of accredited private preschools. Jessica says the Primrose Friends initiative is very popular, comprised of 12 classroom puppets fostering positive character traits: friendship, respect, cooperation, generosity, fairness, promises, caring, honesty, conservation, courage, citizenship and responsibility.
Jessica says familial connections are paramount, so they host Parents Nights Out and events to incorporate families to celebrate various cultures.
"We teach kids how to help others through activities and raising funds for child-driven charities," she says.
Additionally, the teaching staff can earn continuing education credits and associate degrees, turning vital roles into what Jessica hopes they make careers at this Primrose School. 317.883.7181

We’re saying goodbye to plastic wrap, Ziploc bags and aluminum foil, and hello to reusable wax food wraps you can wrap around anything your hungry (or full) heart desires.
• Beeswax beads
• Fabric
• Pinking shears
• Parchment paper
• Baking sheet
01. PREHEAT your oven to its lowest setting.
02. CUT FABRIC into desired shapes. Using pinking shears so the fabric doesn’t fray, you can cut your fabric into any shape or size you’d like. Consider what size or shape of food you store the most and use that as a guide.
03. PREP + MELT. Cover your baking sheet with parchment paper and place the cut fabric on top. Sprinkle with beeswax beads and place in the oven to allow beeswax to melt for 5-10 minutes.
04. KEEP IT COOL. Remove fabric from baking sheet (careful, it’s hot!) and allow wax to harden and cool.
FOR REUSE, wash in cool water (you don’t want the wax to melt!) with mild dish soap and let air dry.
