Home - there is so much contained in that little, four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end every day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.
As we thought about the stories that would line the pages of this year's Home Issue, we knew that we wanted to highlight what makes home special to our readers. For some, home is where they've found a refuge from the hustle and bustle of life and created intentional places to gather in their home away from home. Others like to stay local and build unique colonies of their own - including those for the bees. And some find a home in the team members they work alongside.
We couldn't help but feel lucky as we learned more about the businesses and individuals that make our city home. We hope that the small lens into their lives and work brings our community together. Whether bonding over your family's home away from home in the Colorado mountains or beyond, comparing your hive creation stories with friends, or sharing about the Greeley businesses that make our town feel like home - we all have a story of home, and we hope this issue helps you cherish this one we love so much.
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
Happy March!
Sincerely Yours,

In a world competing for our attention, it is easy to feel scattered, distracted or burnt out. For our well-being, it’s important to find moments to disconnect from busyness and bathe in quiet. The following families have found their second homes to be a sanctuary - a place of refuge from daily noise, hustle, and stress – and fostered intentional connection with all who gather there.
Tony and Lynette Belfiore enjoyed their first condo in Grand Lake, Colorado for several years. But as the kids grew up, got married, and had kids of their own, the space was a little tight for their growing family to comfortably gather. Tony, Lynette and their three grown children and spouses decided to join efforts to buy the next home that would offer the group a refuge.
Now, the Belfiore family owns two getaway homes: one in Grand Lake, Colorado and the other in Kissimmee, Florida. Their Grand Lake home is exclusively for the family, whereas their Florida home, which is located minutes from Walt Disney World, serves as a vacation rental.
Both getaway homes help the Belfiore family unplug from daily responsibilities. Sonja Belfiore, daughter-in-law of Tony and Lynette, is a local real estate agent with Sears Real Estate and has practiced real estate for 10 years in Greeley. Her husband, Sean Belfiore, is an entrepreneur and, alongside members of his family, owns four Hiroshi Teriyaki Grills and four liquor stores in Northern Colorado.
“We started going down to Florida to escape the cold and get a little further away from the businesses,” says Sonja. “When an opportunity popped up to purchase a rental there, since we had already been working well together on the first property, we decided to go for it!”
The retired family members of the Belfiore family enjoy frequent trips to the vacation homes. Sonja and Sean try to vacation to the Grand Lake and Florida homes once to twice per year with their two kids. While the getaways might not be as frequent as Sonja and Sean would like, they love having friends and family make use of the properties. “We love knowing that someone is getting to relax and be in a comfortable home away from home,” says Sonja.
Sonja and Sean coordinate trips with other family members so they can enjoy sharing meals and staying up late playing games. “It’s such a blessing to gather together,” says Sonja. “There is a different level of relaxation and communion that happens when you don’t have anywhere to be, and you don’t feel like you are intruding on someone’s home or overstaying your welcome.”
Being parents of young children, Sonja and Sean appreciate that the routines are simpler at their homes away from home. “Bedtime is so much easier,” says Sonja. “It’s different from being home because you don’t feel the pulls of your to-do list.”
While their second homes have provided cherished memories, the Belfiore family admits that owning an additional home can come with challenges. “You have to check on it from time to time or have someone you trust check on it,” says Sonja. “But that’s so minute compared to all the other benefits.” Sonja recommends that if you’re considering a second home, be sure that you are comfortable with the worst-case scenario. She says that if you can budget and plan for that, everything else seems manageable and enjoyable.

As the perfect location for a bachelor, fishing getaway, Greg Holmes fell in love with Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. So much so that he decided to design and build a cabin there. When he and his wife, Jonde, married, she too made it her home away from home. A few years later, Jonde’s parents, Tim and Jo Kramer, and her older brother, Kaleb Kramer, designed a family cabin in Red Feather Lakes – named The Kramer Family Cabin –and built it next door to Greg and Jonde.
Prior to buying the land for The Kramer Family Cabin, Tim and Jo visited Jonde and Greg’s cabin and fell in love with the scenery and tranquility, prompting them to become neighbors. The Kramer Family Cabin was built by Big Horn Buildings, owned by Kaleb, and the exterior was completed by Independent Roofing, also their family business. The cabin is 768 sq/ft with 3 side wraparound porch, post frame construction, 7/8” corrugated metal roof in Western Rust/azp, reclaimed pro panel wainscot, 1.5” core ten standing seam reclaimed, upper walls 1 ¼” galvanized corrugated, walls and soffit reclaimed barnwood and standing seam interior. Built for durability, longevity, and virtually maintenance free, the Kramer Family Cabin is truly a family cabin from the ground up.
Tim loves the serenity he experiences when he visits the cabin. “The mountains are absolutely gorgeous, the wildlife is amazing and you seldom see anyone,” says Tim. “It’s a restful getaway from daily stress and a great place to sit and do nothing.”
Jonde says the cabin is a place where the family can experience absolute quiet and clear their minds. “It takes a minute to disconnect, to hear nothing, to just be quiet; it can be hard to wrap your head around, but absolute quiet does still exist!” says Jonde. “We don’t have TV, and at best we have spotty cell service. It’s wonderful!”
At the cabin, the Kramer and Holmes families like to immerse themselves in simple pleasures like finding the paths the animals make or watching for bears. As a habit in daily life, the Holmes usually keep their phones within reach. But at the cabin, they’re sure to keep the binoculars close by. “It doesn’t take long to figure out that we’re in their [the wildlife] territory and to be respectful of that,” Jonde says.
From the comfort of their cabins, they have viewed magnificent sunrises and sunsets, watched a mountain lion battle with coyotes, seen countless bears, moose, elk, spotted wolves, and even witnessed a dog tangle with a weasel. “It’s wild and isn’t for everyone, but we love it!” says Jonde.
The Kramer and Holmes families are thankful for a few days where life is simple. “Day to day, it’s easy to see the mishaps, everything that didn’t go right, or schedules that didn’t pan out,” Jonde says. “But when we can take a day, a weekend or just a moment to look over this intricate creation, it’s easy to see that our blessings truly do rival the stars.”
The Kramer and Holmes families are glad they took the leap to buy a second home. Whether you have a second home or not, it gives you something to consider – finding a sanctuary of your own that helps you unplug from the busyness of life and rest in the quiet.
An unexpected opportunity appeared for Aimee Hutson and her siblings in 2020 after receiving an inheritance from their Aunt Helen upon her passing. Aunt Helen was a big influence in Aimee’s life and always told her to “make her money work for her.” Aimee was determined to invest in something that would make her Aunt Helen proud, so in October 2020, Bob and Aimee Hutson purchased a two-bedroom condo in Granby, Colorado. Looking back, Aimee is forever grateful they followed her Aunt Helen’s advice.
With the success of the rental market and the enjoyment of their previous purchase, Bob and Aimee caught the real estate bug in March 2023 and purchased a studio unit in the same complex as their condo. Aimee says the complex offers great amenities with a steam room, outdoor pool, hot tubs, and a workout facility; plus, the studio unit is cozy and great for young families.
Bob and Aimee rent out both units in Granby and find that one of the biggest challenges is trusting that the renters will respect and love their home as much as they do. Although the condo and studio are available for rent, Bob and Aimee often reserve a few days for themselves to rest and reset. And in order to maintain their home away from home, they visit every few months for upkeep.
Aimee and Bob are the owners of Aunt Helen's Cafe and Wine Bar and Aunt Helen's Express. They have been operating the businesses for seven years in downtown Greeley. Although the Hutsons have lived in Greeley for 27 years and love calling it home, they appreciate having a second home to give them a reprieve from everyday life.
Granby offers simplicity, time away, easy access to hiking trails, boating in Grand Lake, skiing in Granby Ranch or Winter Park, breweries in Fraser, but most of all – time to unwind. “We have a very simple life in Granby and feel relaxed when we’re there,” says Aimee. “Our biggest decisions are: hot tub or sauna?”

As the skilled trade industry continues to grow in America, factors such as job security, better wages, and customized work schedules inspire men and women to pursue employment in these honorable service areas. Adrian Vigil, however, credits his pursuit of the plumbing trade to a calling to serve

and a desire to make a direct impact on the needs of residents in his community.
“I remember one of my first service calls—I had a full-time job at the time and was working after hours and weekends,” Adrian shares. “When I arrived at the trailer and saw the desperate need this single mom had for hot water, I did what I could to get her hot water heater up and running. After the repair, I fired up the heater, and lo and behold, she had hot water! The appreciation and gratitude that she expressed and the understanding that I got this gal hot water for her and her children was extremely rewarding and inspirational.”
Adrian is the founder and owner of Top Notch Plumbing in Greeley, Colorado, a company that has been faithfully serving the area for the past
seven years. Adrian’s journey as a plumber began over twenty years ago when his grandfather brought him to his Uncle Joe’s house to help him find employment. After learning the skills to become a plumber alongside his uncle, Adrian found work at a plumbing company. There he gained commercial experience and earned his license as a Master Plumber. After some time in the industry, he recognized a desire to build a new culture within a company. Adrian established Top Notch as an LLC on October 2nd, 2016 and experienced a renewed passion for serving his local community, but it hasn’t always been smooth sailing.
“At the beginning, I didn’t really have a ton of money on my own,” admits Adrian. “What I

earned from Top Notch went straight back into the company, and I was thankful to not have too many outside expenses at the time. After continuing to grind away at the costs, I was finally able to bring on my Uncle Joethe one who got me started in the plumbing trade - as my first employee, and that was a special moment.”
As the company has grown, it now boasts a team of twenty employees. Adrian wanted this team to be more than a group of coworkers, so he worked to develop trust and to create opportunities to bond by highlighting the unique skillset of each of his employees.
“You can’t acquire a family, but you can acquire a team,” says Adrian. “Whether it’s through our work, our company BBQs and camping for bonding time, or coming together to serve at United Way’s Weld Project Connect - our team at Top Notch Plumbing strives to be connected and committed to serving one another and the community to the highest possible degree.”
Apart from the strong team culture that Top Notch Plumbing has built, they have also been named Greeley’s Best Plumbing Company for the past four years (2020 - 2023) and currently serve as the City of Greeley’s contract plumbing company. Even with those

shining accomplishments, Adrian continues to recognize and stress the role that teamwork and resilience have played in establishing what the company has become today.
“I didn’t get to where I am today, with this company, by myself,” shares Adrian. “I can say that I am truly blessed by the team that we have here.
What each individual brings to the table has created a strong foundation that will carry us in our goals of serving with excellence.”
As of 2024, Top Notch will be officially rebranding as Top Notch Plumbing, Heating & Air, with plans to offer extensive HVAC services to customers by the end of the year.
As spring approaches and the flowers begin to bloom, local beekeepers and long-time friends Carol Brickley and Jon Billheimer have some tips for anyone interested in starting their own beehive. “Any encouragement we can give to people to have bees in
Starting a hive is an initial investment of around $500, and Carol and Jon both agree that a mentor makes all the difference. “Get a mentor for sure...” Carol passionately exclaimed. “You can find someone random, or you can take a class through the Northern
their backyard, we do. The life of the world really depends on bees. If vegetables are not pollinated, they don’t grow, then the livestock doesn’t have food, etc.,” Carol says. “Everything we eat is affected by pollinators in one way or another.”
Over the years, the population of wild bees has decreased significantly due to pesticides, mites and viruses. “There is a Colony Collapse Disorder happening that is killing huge portions of bees, but by the same token, the number of hobbyist hives has grown tremendously,” Jon says. The pair explained how bees are intentionally delivered to different places all over the country just to pollinate. “One of my initial concerns was how my neighbors would accept this. It’s such a misunderstood fact that bees are harmful to people. If they sting you, they die. They just want to pollinate, and they really do help the gardens and plants in the area. The honeybees will go up to 5 miles a day to get pollen,” Carol explained.
Colorado Beekeeper’s Association, and they will assign you one.”
Two seasons are particularly busy for beekeepers - the spring and fall. In the spring, bees are starting to become active and reproduce. They need extra food since they’ve used up all their winter supply. In the fall, the hive must prepare to close up for the winter. “One of the advantages of having bees as pets is that you can leave and don’t have to hire a pet sitter,” Carol laughed, explaining the self-sufficiency of the hive for the majority of the year. “I like to check on my hive once a week, especially at the beginning of the summer to make sure it’s doing well, but I don’t open it if I don’t have to,” Jon says.

veil (Pro-Tip: Clothing must be white and mostly cotton because bees react to dark colors and are picky about their fabrics)
• A hive tool (think crowbar) for prying things apart and scraping honey
• A brush to lightly brush the bees off of things
• A smoker with bellows
All supplies can be purchased through the Northern Colorado Beekeepers Association at a discount or Copoco’s Honey in Fort Collins. You can also buy a beginner’s beekeeping kit on Amazon. “If you’re interested in starting a hive, just do it,” Carol and Jon agreed. With the resources available through the Northern Colorado Beekeepers Association, it’s easy to get started.

The Genesis Project of Northern Colorado helps rehabilitate single mothers and supports them in their pursuit of a new beginning. Women progress through five learning domains—Supportive Relationships, Holistic Health, Economic Self-Sufficiency, Life Skills and Future Hopes—over the course of five years as they complete the program.
Jaymi Anderson, the Genesis Project’s Executive Director, explains that one benefit of the Genesis Project is housing, but that’s only the beginning of the program itself. Participating single mothers, and children under 13 staying with them, have a choice from one of six apartments, all located within a multi-family home. The house contains laundry, dining and living rooms, a kitchen, and a backyard with a play structure; these all function as community living spaces for the families in the program. Some mothers are seeking reunification with their children, and one requirement is stable housing—which the Genesis Project provides.
Beyond housing, the Genesis Project offers an on-site Resident Adviser for security and emergencies, as well as a Family Advocate with whom participants meet weekly for guidance. The Genesis Project also assists moms in registering and qualifying for assistance programs. Partner organizations like the Weld Food Bank, Royal Crest Dairy and Wachtel Pork provide food; Double Diamond Crossfit offers gym memberships; and Balance Health gives healthcare advice and education. The program costs $200 per month, which includes an apartment, Genesis classes and those additional resources.
The Genesis Program is broken into three phases. After passing an initial 90-day stabilization trial and deciding
Genesis is the right place for them, mothers begin Phase One: classes. These classes include Career Direction, Crown Financial, Boundaries, Healthy Habits and Traumainformed Parenting. Staff members evaluate the participants across 20 life domains and use the classes to give mothers skills in each area. Volunteers, many of whom are professionals in their subject matter, teach the classes. Mothers also join the ongoing Roundtables, a values-based leadership curriculum, and the addiction recovery support group. Phase One also offers spiritual counseling through Soul Care.
In Phase Two, participants choose to enter either full-time education or full-time work, depending on their Career Direction class from Phase One. Mothers on the education track pursue a degree or certificate to increase their income potential, and they’re supported with career coaching, family advocacy, counseling and money management assistance as needed. After completing their education, participants move out of the Genesis house and into Phase Three. However, participants remain supported in their first year of employment to ensure long-term success.
The work track is much the same: participants develop a resume and apply for work that provides long-term advancement opportunities and benefits. They are provided the same support as the education participants and move out after one year.
For individuals interested in volunteering or businesses interested in sponsorship or donations, contact Jaymi Anderson at genesisproject.ed@gmail.com. The Genesis Project can only aid six of the most vulnerable single mothers in the Northern Colorado area at a time, so Jaymi encourages everyone to share their resources and time with the single parents they know.
