Wanda Cronic Howell, owner and dealer of Cronic Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Cronic Nissan, and Cronic Chevrolet GMC in Griffin, is a nominee for the 2025 TIME Ally Dealer of the Year award. She is one of 49 automobile dealers from across the United States who will be recognized in January by the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). She was nominated by Lea Kirschner, president and CEO of the Georgia Automobile Dealers Association.
The TIME Ally Dealer of the Year program, one of the most prestigious in the industry, honors new-car dealers in America who exhibit exceptional performance in their dealerships and perform distinguished community service. Dealers are nominated by members of the Automotive Trade Association Executives (ATAE) and the winner is acknowledged at the annual NADA Show.
The national award will be presented Jan. 25, 2025 at the NADA TIME Ally Dealer of the Year ceremony in New Orleans, La.
In 1985 Howell joined the company founded by her father, and she assumed its leadership in 2003. Today she oversees three dealerships in Griffin and is active in a wide range of initiatives from serving on the board of the GADA to her support of women in business, local educators and various nonprofits.
She led her company to become a major supporter of the Griffin-Spalding County
Teacher of the Year award, to which she contributes a one-year car lease to the annual winner. She is a supporter of the Salvation Army of Griffin, continuing an effort begun by her father, and does significant work for the American Business Women’s Association.
“The most rewarding aspect of my automotive career has been the opportunity to inspire and elevate other women as leaders in this industry,” said Howell. “Multigenerational women in dealerships are
rare, and there were doubts about whether I could succeed in a male- dominated business. Yet, nearly 30 years later, I’ve not only survived but thrived.”
On any given day, you may catch Wanda on the floor talking to salespeople or customers. Just a short drive from Fayetteville, the Cronic Chevrolet GMC, Cronic Nissan, and Cronic Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM are ready to help you purchase or service your vehicles. www.croniccars.com
If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be writing about the benefits of going gluten and dairy-free, I probably would have laughed and reached for a slice of pizza. For years, I dismissed dietary restrictions like these as unnecessary or even trendy. Why give up the foods you love if you don’t have to? Life’s too short for that.
Well, life has a funny way of changing your perspective. A few months ago, after years of unexplained fatigue, bloating, and other minor but frustrating health issues, I decided to try eliminating gluten and dairy from my diet—not because I was convinced it would work, but because I just wanted to feel better. I figured, “What’s the worst that could happen? If it doesn’t help, I can go back to my regular diet.”
To my surprise, the results were almost immediate. Within days, I felt lighter, more energized, and clearer-headed. Symptoms I’d chalked up to stress or age began to fade. It was like a fog had lifted. Even more surprising was how much I enjoyed experimenting with new foods and recipes. I discovered vibrant flavors and ingredients I’d overlooked before, like almond flour, coconut yogurt, and gluten-free bread that actually tastes good. And, bonus, I have lost eleven pounds!
Don’t get me wrong—there have been challenges. Saying goodbye to cheese was hard (so hard). In total honesty, I do eat feta and parmesan, but that's it. Dining out requires more planning, and I’ve had to endure a few raised eyebrows from friends and family, but the payoff has been worth it. This isn’t about following a trend or judging what’s on someone else’s plate. It’s about listening to my body and making choices that work for me. Maybe gluten and dairy aren’t your triggers, but I encourage you to explore what makes you feel your best.
If you’re considering a dietary shift or just curious about what it’s like, there is a plethora of resources online these days and many more choices in stores and restaurants than there used to be. I believe that every small change you make to your health can lead to something bigger.
We hope you enjoy our Health and Wellness issue. Here’s to feeling our best, one decision and one bite at a time!
With warm blessings,
January 2025

THREE PEDIATRICIANS SHARE THEIR HEARTS AND "Y'S" BEHIND THEIR PASSION.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER CONFORTI
I love treating children because they’re so resilient. Their innocence and wonder are refreshing.
Parenting is never a one-size-fits-all experience, but raising a child with profound autism is a journey filled with unique challenges, surprising joys, and an incredible amount of love. For my daughter, who is 14 years old and nonverbal, finding a pediatrician who truly understands her needs has given this mama total peace of mind.
From the moment we met Dr. Tereasa Ballay, I knew we’d found our doctor. Pediatric visits can be overwhelming for any child, but for my daughter, they can feel like insurmountable obstacles. New environments, unfamiliar faces, and unexpected sensations can trigger intense anxiety. But Dr. Ballay has a gift—a combination of patience, empathy, and a genuine love for children that instantly sets my daughter (and me) at ease.
Every appointment feels less like a clinical checkup and more like a visit with a trusted friend. Dr. Ballay takes the time to let my daughter acclimate to the room, never rushing or imposing. She talks to her directly, not through me, even though my daughter is nonverbal. She seems to understand that communication is more than words and listens with her eyes and heart, picking up on my daughter’s subtle cues that many would miss.
Dr. Ballay is one of three incredible women leading the practice alongside Dr. Deanna Smoak and Dr. Jamie Wallace. Each of them brings a unique story and perspective to their work, but all share the same dedication to creating meaningful relationships with the families they serve.
Dr. Deanna Smoak has always loved working with children, a passion she attributes to being the oldest of six siblings. After completing her studies at the University of West Georgia and Mercer University, she realized pediatrics was her calling. “I love treating children because they’re so resilient. Their innocence and wonder are refreshing. Plus, parents are often more likely to listen, which makes it easier to make a
difference.” For Dr. Smoak, the joy of pediatrics lies in watching her patients grow and forming lasting relationships with families over the years.
Dr. Jamie Wallace, a Marietta, GA native, discovered her love for medicine during a mission trip while in college. Initially unsure about her career path, she found her calling after observing the impact healthcare could have on families. “At first, I thought I’d pursue OB/GYN, but I realized I was more drawn to the babies,” she explains. As her career progressed, Dr. Wallace recognized that the relationships she built with families were the most fulfilling part of her work. “I’ve been here so long now that I’m seeing children of my former patients—it’s a privilege to be part of these generational stories.”
For Dr. Tereasa Ballay, the journey to becoming a pediatrician began at age nine in Texas. A gymnast with a natural instinct to care for others, she often found herself tending to teammates’ scrapes and injuries. “Even as a young girl, I wanted to help,” she recalls. Her experiences as a nanny for triplets further solidified her passion for working with children. Although she briefly considered specializing in OB/ GYN, pediatrics won her heart. “Watching my patients grow up and being part of their lives over the years is the most rewarding part of my job,” she says.
What unites these three remarkable women is their unwavering commitment to fostering strong relationships with families. They understand that parenting is deeply personal, and their role is to guide and support without judgment. Dr. Smoak notes, “Parents want what’s best for their kids — even more than for themselves.” Dr. Wallace adds, “Our job is to help parents make informed decisions. We want everyone to feel at peace.”
For me, this compassionate approach is greatly appreciated. Dr. Ballay has not only provided exceptional medical care for my daughter but has also become a steadying presence in our lives. She validates my concerns, celebrates small victories, and reassures me that
I’m not navigating this journey alone. Her ability to see my daughter as the incredible individual she is has brought me immense comfort.
One of the most remarkable aspects of their care is the complete absence of judgment. Raising a child with profound autism can feel isolating, especially when others don’t understand your choices or challenges. But Dr. Ballay, Dr. Smoak, and Dr. Wallace create a space of acceptance and understanding, making every interaction feel
safe and supportive. Their shared philosophy centers on the importance of relationships. Whether through small moments of encouragement or years of continuous care, they’ve built a practice that feels like an extended family.
Having a partner like Dr. Ballay on this journey is priceless. If you’re fortunate enough to find a healthcare provider who truly connects with your child and supports your family, hold onto them tightly. They are more than a doctor—they are family.
Southside Speech Therapy offers more than speech therapy, it provides an opportunity for parents to experience hope for their children who are navigating speech and language challenges. Founded in 2023 by Lauren Sorrell, an ASHA-Certified Speech Language Pathologist with over a decade of experience, Southside Speech Therapy caters primarily to K-12 students while also offering services to adults. Located at 500 W. Lanier Avenue, Suite 913A, Southside Speech Therapy provides personalized care that focuses on empowering both children and their families to thrive.
Lauren’s journey into speech pathology is deeply personal. Growing up in Fayette County, she was inspired by her mother, a lifelong educator. While initially drawn to teaching, she sought a specialized path that would allow her to make a tangible difference. “I wanted to do something impactful and help people in a specific way,” Lauren shares. Her passion led her to earn a master’s degree in communication sciences and disorders, setting the foundation for her mission to unlock potential through speech and language development.
For Lauren, the most rewarding aspect of her work is the transformation she witnesses in her clients. “Speech and language development is about more than words,” she explains. “It’s about connection, expression, and the ability to engage with the world.” Helping parents understand their child’s needs and equipping them with tools to foster communication, creates a ripple effect of confidence and growth.
Lauren identifies five main areas where parents should look for signs of speech and language difficulties:
1. Expressive: Delayed speech - the child is not speaking at their expected age or limited vocabulary compared to peers.
2. Receptive: Limited capacity for comprehending common words, phrases, or instructions.
3. Phonological: Challenges in pronouncing sounds clearly, leaving off parts of words, impacting intelligibility.
4. Fluency: Stuttering – lack of fluency sometimes linked to trauma, stress, or developmental stages.
5. Pragmatic (social): Struggles with social interactions such as reading cues or engaging in conversations, seems uninterested in speaking or socializing.
Lauren emphasizes the importance of engaging parents as partners. “Progress often depends on equipping parents with the right tools,” she notes. By demystifying the therapy process and fostering collaboration, Lauren ensures families feel empowered and informed every step of the way.
positivity and understanding. She also encourages families to view speech therapy not as a qualifier but as an opportunity for improvement. “Sometimes it’s just about understanding milestones for where a child should be. It’s informative all throughout.”
POST-COVID CHALLENGES AND ADAPTATIONS
The pandemic brought unique challenges to speech development, with masks limiting visual cues and social interactions curbing development. “We’ve seen a rise in pragmatic challenges and delays in diagnosis,” Lauren explains. Her practice has adapted to meet these needs, offering a compassionate and informed approach to help children regain their confidence and communication abilities. “I am the person who is specialized in facilitating communication. I am going to tell parents exactly what I did, why I did it, and where the child should be. It’s not supposed to be a mystery.”
“I care about the kids here, and I want families to have access to high-quality resources without needing to travel to Atlanta.”
Lauren’s commitment to Fayetteville is evident in her practice. “This is my community,” she says. “I care about the kids here, and I want families to have access to high-quality resources without needing to travel to Atlanta.” Southside Speech Therapy offers in-person, in-school, and virtual services making therapy accessible and convenient.

You don't have to travel to Atlanta to receive some of the best cancer care in the country.

Dr. Kristin Higgins, a renowned radiation oncologist with a specialization in lung cancer, assumed the role of Chief Clinical Officer at City of Hope Atlanta in January 2024. Her appointment marks an exciting chapter for City of Hope’s Atlanta campus as it continues its mission to provide world-class, patient-centered cancer care in Georgia.
Dr. Higgins brings a wealth of expertise to her new role. After an impressive 13-year tenure at Emory University, where she served as Vice Chair for Clinical Research in Radiation Oncology, she is poised to guide City of Hope Atlanta to new heights. Known for her innovative approach to treating lung cancer, Dr. Higgins has a reputation for putting patients first—a value that aligns seamlessly with City of Hope’s mission.
City of Hope, founded over a century ago in Los Angeles, is a globally recognized leader in cancer treatment and research. Its legacy includes pioneering advances that have changed the face of medicine, such as the development of synthetic insulin and breakthrough cancer therapies. Ranked #5 by U.S. News & World Report for cancer care, City of Hope expanded its reach in 2022 with the acquisition of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) locations in Phoenix, Chicago, and Atlanta. This acquisition created a cohesive, nationwide network focused exclusively on comprehensive cancer care.
What sets City of Hope apart from other institutions is its holistic and patient-centered approach to cancer treatment. “Everything a cancer patient needs is under one roof,” says Dr. Higgins. “From expedited appointments to personalized care, our entire team is aligned around the mission to turn hope into reality.” This integrated model ensures that patients receive not just cutting-edge medical treatments but also the emotional, psychological, and practical support they need during their journey.
“Everything a cancer patient needs is under one roof,” says Dr. Higgins. “From expedited appointments to personalized care, our entire team is aligned around the mission to turn hope into reality.”
City of Hope Atlanta is also deeply committed to engaging with the local community, offering educational events and free screenings to raise awareness and support early detection efforts. Two upcoming events underscore this commitment: a Cervical Cancer Screening Event on January 14 and a Breast Cancer Screening Event on March 12. These events are part of City of Hope’s broader strategy to make top-tier cancer care accessible and proactive for everyone in the community.
Dr. Higgins, a passionate advocate for patient care, highlights the deeply rewarding nature of her work. “Having a patient with stage 3 lung cancer that is curable but not necessarily a slam-dunk—taking those patients through radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, going through follow-up with them, and being able to tell them they are cured—is probably one of the most rewarding experiences,” she shares. Her dedication exemplifies City of Hope’s commitment to offering not just treatment but also genuine hope and healing.
The Atlanta campus is more than just a treatment center; it’s a hub of innovation and compassionate care. With a multidisciplinary team of experts working collaboratively under one roof, patients at City of Hope Atlanta have access to the latest advancements in oncology, clinical trials, and supportive therapies. This approach ensures that each patient receives a personalized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs and circumstances.
In Atlanta, the impact of City of Hope’s expansion is already being felt. The integration of CTCA’s infrastructure with City of Hope’s cutting-edge research and patient-centered philosophy has created a robust cancer care network that’s uniquely positioned to serve patients in the Southeast. For local residents facing a cancer diagnosis, this means access to some of the most advanced treatments available anywhere in the world, delivered by a team that genuinely cares about their well-being.
Dr. Higgins and her team are not just transforming cancer care—they are transforming lives. Their dedication to each patient’s journey, from diagnosis to survivorship, ensures that no one faces cancer alone. “At City of Hope, it’s about more than medicine,” Dr. Higgins says. “It’s about human connection and the belief that together, we can overcome even the most challenging diagnoses.”
