Back To School!
I know the calendar says the New Year starts in January, but for me, this season has always felt like the true beginning.
Our family runs on an academic calendar— my husband is a professor—so this time of year marks a fresh chapter as he gears up for another year of teaching and coaching junior college golf. Ever since I can remember, this season has carried the same kind of energy: school supplies lining the aisles, brand-new backpacks, and that familiar buzz of anticipation in the air as kids get ready to start a fresh year.

They say kids and pets reflect our truest selves, and I couldn’t agree more. They move through life without the filters of judgment or expectation. While we’re the ones guiding and teaching them, there’s so much we can learn just by watching them live freely and fully. This issue is dedicated to them—our littlest learners and our four-legged companions.
Inside this issue, we chat with Jennifer Somers, owner of Coronado Prep Preschool, about nurturing students at the start of their educational journey. On the other end of the spectrum, we celebrate graduates from Green Valley Christian School, a reminder of how quickly time really does fly.
We visit Victory Martial Arts to explore how martial arts builds confidence and character in kids—and how parents can bond with their children by taking classes together, and we check out how Truman Orthodontics keeps your kids smiling.
And for those looking for ways to entertain your pet indoors while staying out of the heat, local pet sitter and boarder Yolanda Bennett shares her tips.
Here’s to fresh starts, full backpacks, and learning from those who teach us without even trying.
We wish you a happy school year ahead!

BUILDING BRIGHT SMILES and big confidence

The kid-friendly approach at Truman Orthodontics-Henderson

ARTICLE BY SIENNA SINCLAIR
The journey to a perfect smile is a confidence-boosting adventure at Truman Orthodontics-Henderson. (trumanortho.com). Led by Dr. Zach Truman, this family-friendly office is redefining what it means for kids to get braces—making the process not only stress-free, but also genuinely fun and empowering.
A WELCOMING SPACE DESIGNED FOR KIDS
As soon as families enter the Henderson office, they’re welcomed by an environment that feels more like a fun play zone than a typical orthodontic clinic. “We’ve created an experience that helps kids feel comfortable from the moment they walk through our doors,” says Dr. Truman. The office features a lively arcade area, braces-friendly snacks, and a coffee bar that has become famous among patients for its hot chocolate. Before their first visit, new families receive a short, upbeat video tour, ensuring that everything feels familiar and exciting.
PERSONALIZED CARE AND EARLY INTERVENTION
Truman Orthodontics-Henderson believes every child’s smile is unique and deserves individualized attention. Consultations are always complimentary, and the team often gets patients started with braces on the very same day. “At Truman OrthodonticsHenderson, we believe that great orthodontic care should be personal, approachable, and fun,” Dr. Truman explains. The practice emphasizes the importance of early orthodontic evaluation, helping parents understand that proactive care can set their children up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

MAKING ORAL HYGIENE FUN AND REWARDING
Good oral hygiene is a cornerstone of the Truman OrthodonticsHenderson experience, and the team goes the extra mile to make it engaging for kids. “Good oral hygiene is a big deal to us—and we like to make it fun, too!” Dr. Truman shares. Every year, the marketing team visits local schools to teach children ages 5 to 7 about brushing and dental care. When patients begin treatment, they receive hands-on brushing demonstrations and a fun, easy-to-follow video (featuring a local celebrity) to guide them at home.
To keep motivation high, Truman Orthodontics Henderson offers the Patient Rewards HUB—a VIP rewards system where kids earn points for good brushing, punctuality, and following instructions. These points can be redeemed for gift cards to their favorite stores, turning daily orthodontic care into an interactive and rewarding game.

“This is orthodontics made simple and enjoyable.”
BRACES AS A FORM OF SELF-EXPRESSION
One of the highlights for young patients is the ability to customize their braces. Kids can choose from a rainbow of colors, making their orthodontic gear a form of self-expression. This simple choice transforms appointments into something to look forward to and helps children feel proud of their progress.
CELEBRATING MILESTONES AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE
Every visit to Truman Orthodontics Henderson is treated as a milestone.
The staff celebrates each individual’s progress, helping them see their orthodontic journey as an accomplishment. “The change wasn’t just cosmetic—her whole smile lit up from the inside out,” Dr. Truman recalls about a young patient whose confidence blossomed after treatment corrected a stubbornly rotated tooth. Such stories are common at Truman Orthodontics, where the focus is on building self-esteem as much as straightening teeth.
HOW PARENTS CAN SUPPORT THE JOURNEY
Parents play a crucial role in their child’s orthodontic adventure. Dr. Truman advises, “One of the best ways parents can support their child’s treatment is by bringing them to all their appointments—and enjoying the coffee bar while you’re here doesn’t hurt either!” He also emphasizes the importance of regular six-month cleanings with the family dentist to ensure optimal oral health throughout treatment.
A FAMILY LEGACY OF SMILES
While the Henderson office is Dr. Zach Truman’s home base, his brother, Dr. Mark Truman, leads the Summerlin location, ensuring that families across the valley have access to the same high standard of care and fun, kid-focused approach.
At Truman Orthodontics-Henderson, braces are more than just a treatment—they’re a journey filled with encouragement, celebration, and plenty of smiles. As Dr. Zach Truman puts it, “This is orthodontics made simple and enjoyable.”

Stronger Together
Victory Martial Arts’ family classes turn workouts into fun, bonding time for kids and parents
At Victory Martial Arts Henderson ( victoryma.com ), the echoes of laughter and the rhythmic thud of feet on mats tell a story far beyond punches and kicks. Here, families aren’t just spectators—they’re teammates.
The studio’s unique family-style classes invite kids and parents to train side by side, transforming martial arts into a shared adventure that strengthens bodies and bonds alike.
Amber Chambers, Director at Victory Martial Arts, explains the inspiration behind these joint sessions: “We saw the physical and mental health benefits of martial arts for all ages. By combining training for parents and kids, we create a shared fitness journey where everyone gets stronger, more flexible, and healthier together.” The concept is simple but powerful: when families sweat, learn, and grow as a unit, the results go far beyond the dojo.
Victory Martial Arts isn’t just about teaching discipline and confidence—it’s about building connections. “Family training provides genuine quality time,” Amber says. “Instead of parents just watching from

the sidelines, they’re in the action, cheering each other on and creating deeper emotional connections.” For many families, these classes become the highlight of their week, a time to unplug from screens and daily stressors and plug into each other.
The benefits extend well past the physical. Martial arts, Amber notes, is a proven stress reliever. “It reduces anxiety and tension for both kids navigating school and parents managing life,” she says. The shared experience of learning new techniques, overcoming challenges, and celebrating progress together helps families develop resilience and mutual respect. “Parents model respect for instructors, partners, and the process, and their kids absorb this by watching their parents lead by example.”
Victory’s instructors are experts at making sure everyone—from energetic six-year-olds to busy parents—feels challenged and engaged. “Our expert instructors tailor drills and techniques to match the needs of each age group,” Amber explains. “Every student, from child

to adult, is challenged appropriately and supported in their growth.” The result is a fun, dynamic environment where no one feels left behind.
The impact of these family classes is often transformative. Amber shares, “One of my best friends and co-workers says their family training saved their marriage. Training together gave them common goals and a united purpose. She and her husband wanted to lead by example, and their kids loved spending real, quality time together.” Stories like these are common at Victory, where camaraderie isn’t just a buzzword— it’s a way of life.
To encourage more families to experience the benefits, Victory Martial Arts offers a special deal: pay for two family members, and the

rest of the household trains for free. It’s a gesture that reflects the studio’s commitment to making martial arts accessible and inclusive for all.
In a world where families often struggle to find meaningful ways to connect, Victory Martial Arts offers a solution that’s as fun as it is impactful. As Amber puts it, “We love seeing families cheer each other on. Training together builds respect, teamwork, and memories that last a lifetime.” For families at Victory, the journey is just as important as the destination— and everyone wins when they take it together.

“Beat the heat: Turn your home into a pet paradise with creative games, cool treats, and indoor adventures.”

Summer Fun for Pets
Creative ways to keep your furry friends entertained indoors

When August arrives in the valley, the famous heat can make even a short stroll outside risky for pets. With temperatures easily soaring well above 100°F, local pet owners face a unique challenge: How to keep dogs and cats active, healthy, and happy without braving the scorching sun. But that doesn’t mean our four-legged friends have to be bored or inactive.
There are plenty of innovative ways to turn your home into a pet paradise—and no one knows this better than Yolanda S. Bennett, owner of Yolanda Bennett’s Pet Sitting Services and Boarding (thelasvegaspetsitter. com), a trusted local expert in pet care.
“Las Vegas summers are no joke,” says Yolanda S. Bennett, owner of Yolanda Bennett’s Pet Sitting Services and Boarding, also known as The Las Vegas Pet Sitter. “When it’s too hot for a walk, it’s time to get creative indoors.”
From DIY enrichment toys to frozen treats and pet-friendly streaming, here are expert-approved ways to keep your pets mentally and physically engaged—all from the comfort of your air-conditioned home.
BRAIN GAMES AND INTERACTIVE INDOOR FUN
Bennett recommends short, stimulating activities throughout the day to fight boredom and promote mental health.

• Puzzle Toys & Treat Dispensers: “Toys like snuffle mats, Kongs, or puzzle feeders give your pet a job to do,” says Yolanda. “They tap into natural instincts like foraging and problem-solving.”
• Hide and Seek: Hide treats or toys around the house and let your pet sniff them out.
• Indoor Agility: Set up a mini obstacle course using chairs, blankets, or broomsticks to encourage movement and fun.
Cats also benefit from stimulation like laser toys, feather wands, and even cardboard boxes for pouncing and play.
DIY ENRICHMENT YOU CAN MAKE AT HOME
No fancy shopping trips needed—some of the best pet enrichment can be made with items you already have.
YOLANDA’S DIY FAVORITES:
• Towel Roll Toys : Roll kibble in a towel and knot the ends to create a simple puzzle.
• Cardboard Box Mazes: Connect boxes with holes to create a tunnel or maze for small pets.
• Sock Puzzle: Place treats in a sock and knot it—your pet will love the challenge.
• Frozen Broth Treats: Freeze low-sodium broth with small treats for a cooling snack.
SAFE INDOOR SOCIALIZATION
Even in summer, pets need social interaction. Yolanda recommends supervised, calm environments to reduce stress.
“Supervised playdates with calm, vaccinated pets can help relieve loneliness and burn energy,” she says.
SOCIALIZATION TIPS:
• Start with scent swapping before in-person meetings.
• Supervise play to prevent overstimulation.
• Provide a quiet retreat zone for breaks.
• Try indoor group play at local pet-sitting facilities like Yolanda’s, where small groups ensure personalized care in air-conditioned comfort.
COOL TREATS AND HYDRATION TIPS
Hydration is just as important indoors as it is outside.
• Fresh Water: Always offer clean, cool water—add ice cubes to keep it chilled longer.
• Frozen Snacks: Treats like blueberries, seedless watermelon, or frozen peanut butter work well in moderation.
• Moisture-Rich Foods: Add broth to dry food or offer wet food to boost hydration.
• Portion Control: Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to discomfort in the heat.
TECH FOR PET ENTERTAINMENT
Busy day? Let tech lend a paw.
• Pet Streaming: YouTube has calming music and visuals made just for animals.
• Interactive Apps: Let cats chase digital mice or try treat-timer games for dogs.
• Online Training: Use short virtual lessons to teach new tricks or reinforce commands.”
Training doesn’t have to be long,” Yolanda says. “Five to 10 minutes a day keeps pets sharp and engaged.”
Whether you’re a dog parent or a cat lover, summer doesn’t have to mean restless pets or overheated walks. With a little creativity, a few household items, and expert tips from locals like Yolanda Bennett, your pets can stay cool, happy, and entertained indoors all summer long. Stay safe. Stay inside. Let the fun begin.

“Stay safe. Stay inside. Let the fun begin.”

READY SCHOOL FOR
As families in Henderson gear up for the new school year, many reflect on the milestones their children have reached—like recent graduates of Coronado Prep Preschool (coronadopreppreschool.com ) who are stepping confidently into kindergarten and beyond. These young learners embody the school’s commitment to preparing children for success through a nurturing and developmentally appropriate environment.
“We build a strong foundation for lifelong learning by focusing on the whole child,” says Jennifer Sullivan, owner and director of Coronado Prep Preschool. “Through hands-on exploration, social interaction, and teacher-guided instruction, children gain critical thinking skills, independence, emotional regulation, and a sense of self-confidence.” Daily routines and engaging activities foster curiosity, cooperation, and resilience—qualities essential for thriving both academically and socially.
Coronado Prep’s curriculum combines play-based learning with structured developmental milestones. “Our program focuses on early literacy, numeracy, fine motor skills, and problem-solving,” Jennifer explains. The Pre-K classes emphasize classroom routines, self-help skills, and peer collaboration in small group settings. Social-emotional
learning and STEM activities are integrated throughout, while family engagement events support a smooth transition to kindergarten.
Jennifer recalls one standout student, Averie, who joined the preschool as a toddler and blossomed into a confident learner by Pre-K. “Her teachers noted her leadership during group projects and her ability to problem-solve independently,” Jennifer says. Averie exceeded expectations on her kindergarten assessment, and her parents credit Coronado Prep for the smooth transition to elementary school.
Families choose Coronado Prep for its low teacher-to-child ratios, nurturing staff, and individualized learning approach. “We combine experience, passion, and a deep commitment to quality early education,” Jennifer notes. “We are more than a preschool—we are a community where children develop a love for learning.”
“Early childhood is a magical time full of potential,” Jennifer reflects. “We are honored to play a role in each child’s journey and take pride in celebrating every milestone. Our success comes from creating a loving, consistent environment that supports children and their families every step of the way.”
At Coronado Prep Preschool, children are not only ready for school—they are ready to succeed.

ANYONE CAN BE A SEABIRD
KIDS AND PETS WELCOME FOR A LIFESTYLE ORIENTED LOCAL-STYLE BEACH ESCAPE
ARTICLE BY PAIGE CANDEE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE SEABIRD RESORT

When the Vegas sun starts sizzling, sometimes the only cure is a salty breeze, sandy toes, and a place where your kids and pets are not just tolerated—they’re treated like VIPs. Enter The Seabird Resort (theseabirdresort.com), Oceanside’s sparkling answer to the family-friendly beach getaway, and just a short drive or flight from the desert. This isn’t your average hotel—it’s the largest beachfront resort to open in San Diego County in half a century, and it’s designed for families, fur babies, and anyone who dreams of swapping neon lights for ocean nights, at least for a weekend.
From the moment you step into The Seabird, you’re greeted by a living room that feels like it belongs to your coolest, most stylish friend. Local artwork, curated by the Oceanside Museum of Art, fills every corner—don’t miss the hand-woven, thrifted T-shirt installation, a nod to the resort’s passion for ocean conservation and environmentalism. The vibe is relaxed and homelike with a touch of coastal chic, and the staff are genuinely delighted to see your kids—and your dog—walk through the door. At check-in, little guests get to pick a special toy from a wagon, and pups are greeted with tail wags and treats.
Rooms at The Seabird are designed for families, couples, or individuals, and even your furry friend. The ocean views from the balconies make you feel like you’ve moved right into a postcard. The delight continues off the front steps. Just a quick stroll across the street lands you on a wide, sandy beach. The resort’s Beach Rambler trailer is your headquarters for all things sun and surf: complimentary boogie boards, chairs, umbrellas, and snacks, so you can pack light and play hard.
Kids will find their tribe at The Seabird’s “Little Seabirds” program, which offers daily crafts like sand art, rock painting, and seashell decorating—plus the occasional bubble party or movie night with popcorn. The pool deck, with its ocean views and heated water, is a favorite for families, and the poolside food and beverage service means you never have to leave your cabana or lounge chair for lunch.
Picky eaters and foodies alike are covered at Piper, the resort’s signature restaurant serving California’s coastal cuisine, features garden-fresh produce, handmade pastas, locally sourced seafood, and more.

“From sandy toes to tail wags, The Seabird welcomes the whole family.”
As the sky turns gold and the ocean breeze cools, evenings at The Seabird bring a sweet tradition: s’mores kits are available, so families can gather around fire pits to toast marshmallows and swap stories under the stars.
And don’t worry, parents, there’s plenty for you, too. The Shore Room is the go-to spot for sunset cocktails with a panoramic view of the Pacific, and the spa offers everything from massages to sound baths for a little grown-up indulgence.
Outside The Seabird is walkable downtown Oceanside offering a laid-back, family- and pet-friendly coastal vibe with surf shops, quirky boutiques, local art galleries, and plenty of spots to grab ice cream or relax at a sidewalk café.

If you’re craving a date night or a little grown-up adventure, just head across the street to The Seabird’s sister property, Mission Pacific Hotel. This adult-oriented retreat offers elevated retail, a rooftop pool and bar, and a sophisticated atmosphere that’s earned it the number one spot among resorts in the continental US in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards for 2024. Separating the two hotels is the iconic “Top Gun” house, now a pastel-blue landmark where you can snap a photo on a Maverick-style motorcycle—because why not make your own movie moment?
With surf lessons, local shops and restaurants within walking distance, and a staff that genuinely appreciates your visit, The Seabird Resort is the kind of place that makes you feel like you belong. So next time the Vegas heat has you dreaming of ocean breezes, remember anyone—kids, pets, parents, couples, friends alike—can be a Seabird.
“The Seabird Resort is the kind of place that makes you feel like you belong.”
