Make a Color Statement with some Extraordinary Perennials!!

Come explore our store - it’s full of an array of colorful perennials to enhance your landscape.

Perennial garden tips:

• Use a mix of tall and short plants, as well as those with different foliage textures, to create a layered look.

• Create visual interest by planting multiple of the same variety in groups, rather than scattering them.

• Allow enough room for each plant to grow to its mature size, ensuring good air circulation.

Regular watering is important, especially in the first year for establishing roots. Mulching helps with moisture retention and weed control. Enjoy time in the yard by removing the spent blooms as it encourages more flowers.

ROOTED IN INTEGRITY, FOUNDED ON FAITH IN CHRIST

“A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike.”

Dear Eden Prairie Lifestyle reader,

Adorn your comfiest pith helmet and oil up the pivot on your compass, because we are going on an adventure!

Where will this year’s Explore issue whisk you away to? To Red Wing. To the purifying waters of Lake Minnetonka. To the Society of the Leadfoot Car Show. To the Twin Cities’ busiest reliever airport. To every place accessible by electric bicycle. To every public park in Eden Prairie!

Is your wanderlust too fiery to be satisfied by visits to nearby attractions? Not to worry. In this issue we are proud to feature Alana LaBissoniere of ALL Travel, who will ship you off to anywhere in the world (within reason) in high style.

There’s also tons of philanthropic stuff which we couldn’t fit into the Explore theme but wanted to feature anyway. See how the Eden Prairie Community Foundation throws a gala, and how Helping Paws draws its own community closer together. Find out how you can amplify your donation to PROP Food Shelf this month, and whom the Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools chose to honor with Legacy Awards. Why, it's enough to make an  Eden Prairie Lifestyle reader feel downright benevolent!

Finally, there is a tiny recap of a most humble little recent event: the fifth anniversary party of this very magazine under its current leadership (i.e. mine). Did we eat shrimp and drink wine? You’ll never know unless you continue turning these pages.

As always, I would like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose generous support we could not mail our magazine directly to our readers’ homes. I always welcome any feedback or interest you may have in appearing in our magazine!

Best regards,

July 2025

AN EVENING OF FUN AND BENEFACTION

May 1st marked one of the Eden Prairie Community Foundation’s greatest charity galas to date: the 45th annual EP Gives, where almost 200 guests wined, dined, and donated over $100,000 toward the foundation’s myriad philanthropic efforts.

“As our network expands, so too does our guest list,” said Greg Leeper, executive director. “That’s why so many newcomers joined our long-time supporters at the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest, where they bid in live and silent auctions for prizes such as international travel packages, a weekend cabin getaway, gift cards to local businesses, and the ever-popular ‘ultimate beer package’ (almost 40 gallons all together).

“I’m grateful to Senator Steve Cwodzinski for his inspired emceeing, Board Chair Deepak Ganapathy for sharing his personal account of the importance of service to our community, and Lissa Weimelt for speaking so candidly to our guests about Maria’s Voice: the nonprofit dedicated to preventing domestic abuse which she cofounded in her daughter’s memory.

“Most of all, I’m grateful to everyone who came out in support of our mission. Their donations allow us to provide grants to nonprofits and agencies that serve Eden Prairie, scholarships to promising Eden Prairie High School students, and fiscal sponsorship for local community projects. Thank you for showing how generous our town can be!”

LIFE IS A JOURNEY – NOT A DESTINATION. ENJOY THE RIDE WITH ALANA’S HELP!

ALL TRAVEL

Imagine you’re James Bond (or his equally cool female equivalent, Jamesita Bondita). You spend your days traveling to exotic locales, confronting deadly foes, and rendezvousing with

trip there the very next year. And now that I’m an ever-so-slightly less young woman, I’m just as in love with meeting new people, experiencing new cultures, tasting new food, marveling at

“...YOU COULD FLOAT DOWN THEM
ENDLESSLY AND NEVER SEE THE SAME SIGHTS TWICE.”

even deadlier lovers. And the music that plays whenever you enter a room?

BA-DA-DA-DAA-DA-DA-DA … DAA-DAA … DA-DADAHHH

Awesome.

Now, ask yourself: Do you think James(ita) arranges their own trips, or departs on them unprepared for trouble? Of course not. That wouldn’t be cool, which is why they have MI6 to book all their tix and bail them out when things go sideways.

You may not be a secret agent (as far as anyone suspects, at least), but that doesn’t mean you can’t have your own personal Moneypenny. Travel agent Alana LaBissoniere of ALL Travel has a license … to thrill.

“I love travel,” said Alana. “I loved it as a little girl, going on roadtrips wedged into the backseat of my dad’s unairconditioned Ford Capri. I loved it as a young woman on my first trip to France in 1980, and on my second

new scenery, and feeling new energy as I’ve always been.

“I’d always wanted to make a career out of my greatest passion. After several years of planning and training, I was finally ready to do it with the grand opening of ALL Travel … in January, 2020. Whoops! But here I am, five years later and still fortunate enough to help others who share my wanderlust.”

It’s not just called “ALL Travel” because Alana’s middle initial is L. “ALL” also describes your available options when Alana is planning your trip (with some exceptions; you’re on your own if you want to visit North Korea, for example).

“Europe is my focus,” said Alana. “It’s my niche – my sweet spot – my favorite place in the world to go on river cruises, which are one of my specialties. The Danube. The Rhine. The Douro. The Seine, Elbe and Moselle. The continent is marbled with so many rivers that you could float down them endlessly and never see the same sights twice.

“Of course, a Minnesotan travel agent wouldn’t get very far if they didn’t also offer fair-weather destinations. I’m especially fond of the Caribbean islands. There are hundreds of them, each with its own distinct history and personality. Visit Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Nassau, and Turks and Caicos. You’ll discover that even the waters surrounding them are different brilliant shades of blue. And oh! Oh! You haven't truly experienced paradise until you’ve toured Mexico’s wine country!”

I know what you’re thinking. I always do, because I’m very attuned to this magazine’s readership. You’re thinking: “If there’s any upshot to occupying this accursed digital age, then it must surely be the speed and convenience with which one can purchase tickets and reservations online.” And you’re right! Buying stuff is extraordinarily easy. It’s everything else that’s nigh impossible.

“You certainly can book your own flights, cruises, hotels, rentals and tours on your own,” said Alana. “But if you wind up needing help, then you’ll be lucky to speak to a customer service rep who barely pretends to care about you.

“THINK

OF ME AS THE HOUSTON TO YOUR APOLLO...”

“From the moment you leave home until your safe return, my mission is ensuring you have the time of your life. A lot of that includes upfront planning, like helping you avoid popular tourist destinations during peak season, making sure you leave with the correct travel insurance, and booking your itinerary in a way that stretches your budget the furthest. Simply visiting Hawaiian islands in a certain order can save you thousands!

“The human touch becomes even more important when things go wrong. What if you injure yourself or encounter a family emergency just prior to departure, and hope to get a total refund? What if your luggage disappears en route to your destination? What if your hotel overbooks, and tries sending you to a fleabag on the other side of town? Think of me as the Houston to your Apollo, who plans your trip so nothing goes wrong and stands by you in the off chance something does.”

ALL Travel: Never leave Eden Prairie without it! Visit ALLTravelAdvisor.com today to learn more and schedule a call with Alana.

SOCIETY OF THE LEAD FOOT CAR SHOW

“SHE’S A REAL BEAUT, CLARK!”

I remember my first car like I totaled it just yesterday: a cherry red ‘91 Geo Tracker with a 1.6 teaspoon engine and upholstery that smelled of wet dog despite never having come into contact with dog, let alone wet one. Top speed? Around 220 miles per hour, terminal velocity.

I wish I still had that beaut. I’d have brought it to the Society of the Lead Foot’s Eighth Annual Car Show on May 17th so that it might have taken its rightful place among other marvels of automotive engineering. Ferraris. Lamborghinis. Geo Trackers. McLarens. Porsches. All these and many more were showcased at the show!

“Actually, no Geo Trackers,” said Dr. Darren Cowl of Family Podiatry Clinic, who founded the Society of the Lead Foot and hosts its annual show in Chanhassen. “Though attendance is free and open to the public, spots are highly exclusive. I only invite owners of exotics and supercars I’ve befriended over the course of my lifelong love affair with cars.

“Guests of the show share some real gems. One guy brings in his Saleen S7 – a legendary sportscar, of which only 78 were made. Another has brought in his LM002 off-road vehicle: the ‘Rambo Lambo,’ which you’ll find only 20 of in the U.S. (and even fewer that actually run). We’ve even had the same Ferrari 330 P4 that appeared in Ford v Ferrari .

“The Society of the Lead Foot isn’t about bragging rights, though. We’re just inveterate motorheads who love sharing our passion with the world. There’s nothing better than witnessing the kinds of emotional reactions people have when they see a mint Porsche 911 RUF or Ferrari Testarossa.”

Does Dr. Cowl’s love of cars stem from his love of podiatry, or vice versa? “No,” he answered. “They’re mutually exclusive of one another … though if you’re trying to stay off your feet while recovering from bunion surgery, then I suppose I technically could recommend buying a Pagani Zonda R.”

Did you miss this year’s Society of the Lead Foot Car Show? Try and make yourself last until its triumphant return next May, and follow the event’s Facebook page in the meantime!

EDEN PRAIRIE PARKS AND RECREATION

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

If you visited a different park in Eden Prairie each week, you would need one full year to see them all.

And you’d never get bored. Our town encompasses over 1,000 acres of active use parkland, including public beaches, fishing piers, ice rinks, community gardens, tennis courts, ballparks, hundreds of miles of sidewalks and trails, and many other recreational amenities that are almost as fun as magazine reading. Our parks also provide views of 17 lakes, more than 100 ponds, and over 4,500 acres of open wetlands – the best kind of wetlands.

“I was born and raised to love nature, and then blessed with my dream job,” said Amy Markle, parks and recreation director. “Watching over Eden Prairie’s parks and 13 conservation areas feels like I won the lottery, and nothing’s so satisfying as helping others build the same connections to the outdoors that I cherish so deeply.”

READER: DO NOT FRET. Amy doesn’t do it all alone.

“We have such a talented team to steward the parks,” explained Amy. “Of course there are all my fellow city employees, who do everything from mowing to recreational programming. They inspire me everyday! I’m also enormously grateful to Friends of Eden Prairie Parks: a group of community volunteers dedicated to maintaining our town’s natural ecosystems and improving their biodiversity. They do so much for us. I am especially appreciative of their help managing invasive plants like garlic mustard and European buckthorn.”

The Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission further exemplifies the power of volunteerism. The group of Eden Prairie residents advises City Council on matters of development and use of parks and recreation facilities, leisure services, recreation programming, preservation of natural resources, and promotion of environmental awareness.

“We usually have ten to 12 commissioners and eight youth commissioners at any given time,” elaborated Amy. “They’re just ordinary people who happen to be really into parks and recreation, and express it by helping us build policy, reviewing plans for construction, and providing valuable insights into the conservation and enhancement of our precious green spaces.”

FLYING CLOUD AIRPORT

Where Great Careers Take Off

Why is there so much in Eden Prairie today? Partly because almost nothing was here once.

The year was 1941. The United States Navy needed a new airfield. More specifically, it needed an airfield that wasn’t. No runways. No infrastructure. No nothing. Just flat, dark and empty fields where pilots could practice rough takeoffs and landings.

Fortuitously, “flat, dark and empty” were three of Eden Prairie’s main attractions at the time. Our town proved most useful to the Navy until 1945, when available positions for fighter pilots sharply declined due to reasons that don’t beg explanation.

The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which had recently been founded to operate multiple airports within the area, purchased the site of the Navy’s former airfield in 1948. By 1966, MAC had grown that once dark and empty patch of earth into the Central United States’ second busiest airport.

Flying Cloud Airport (FCM) now serves as the metro’s busiest reliever airport. MAC logs over 120,000 operations there annually, which include business aviation, flight training, recreational flying, and emergency medical operations. So much activity generates around $230 million in annual revenue, and has created almost 1,200 jobs.

Robert Dockry is proud to call one of those jobs his own.

“One family vacation to the Kennedy Space Center was all it took to hook me on aviation,” said Robert. “I got my pilot license during my freshman year at University of North Dakota, where I majored in unmanned aircraft systems hoping for a career in the military. That all changed when Joe Harris, an alumnus of UND, spoke to my class about his amazing experience working for MAC. ‘As an airport director, you never live the same day twice,’ he said. I couldn’t ask him if MAC offered internships fast enough.

“Fast forward seven years to 2023, and I’m the manager of FCM. Isn’t it funny how that works?

“My duty is to keep the airport safe, secure and legal. I help our awesome staff minimize risk and prepare for every conceivable emergency. I oversee maintenance of our runways, buildings, grounds, and fences. I deal directly with over 140 lessees, ensuring their multifaceted needs are always met in full by our facilities. I work closely alongside air traffic control, take charge of all construction and capital development, and do whatever I’m able to keep animals away from the airport.

If you ever need advice on how to harmlessly frighten coyotes away using pyrotechnics, I’m your man.

“I’m happy to say Joe was telling the truth. I never do live the same day twice at FCM.

“And I’m not getting complacent anytime soon. Our comprehensive, long-term plan to maintain and improve FCM is never-ending. So too is our mission to build good will with the community we’re so fortunate to be surrounded by. That includes supporting Wings of the North’s AirFair (returning this year on July 12th), as well as Girls in Aviation Day which shows girls and boys the exciting careers they can have in aviation – not just as pilots, but as mechanics, fuelers, painters, upholsters, and the enormous variety of other professionals who make modern aviation possible.”

“It’s hard to believe I used to be one of those wide-eyed kids,” said Kelly Gerads, director of reliever airports. “I started with MAC 33 years ago – almost immediately after earning my degree in aviation management from St. Cloud State – on an internship in the department that monitored noise within the community. I stayed on to assist with ordinance development, public process, and property management. After a couple of years, I became a full-time employee for the best organization I could ever work for.

“I don’t just love aviation for the opportunities it has given me. This industry offers meaningful careers to people from all walks of life. It’s essential to businesses of all sizes, from startups to Fortune 500 companies. It truly connects the world!

“It’s certainly connected me to a lot of great people. Overseeing MAC’s six airports puts me shoulder to shoulder with a very competent and experienced staff: professionals like Robert, who somehow make my monumental task not just manageable, but enjoyable. And although my role puts me in some position of authority here at MAC, I still see myself as a servant. I’m here to help the aviation community overcome challenges, however complex they might be, and benefit the metro at large by keeping it a bustling capital of commerce.

“If that sounds like a good day’s work to you too, then I invite you to join us!”

Robert Dockry, Manager of Flying Cloud Airport

Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools 2025 Legacy Awards

Over $1,000,000 in grants. More than $175,000 in scholarships. The Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools (FEPS) has made quite the impact on our city’s youth since its foundation in 1998.

But if you vacuumed every dollar out of Eden Prairie Schools’ coffers, and shut down all its buildings, and mashed all its books into pulp, our town’s children would still receive a world-class education. Teachers, staff, volunteers, alumni, and other community members simply couldn’t have it any other way.

“Part of our mission is honoring those selfless, exceptional people who make our schools great,” said Liz Lindner, secretary for FEPS. “That is the

essence of our annual Legacy Awards. Any member of our community can nominate anyone else to receive one. If we also find that the nominee makes a positive difference in students’ lives, then they have an excellent chance of winning.

“Have you witnessed someone making a meaningful contribution to our school system? Then we encourage you to nominate them for one of next year’s Legacy Awards. I’m certain they would continue doing wonderful things without any thanks, but let’s shower them in thanks all the same!”

FoundationForEPSchools.org

Officer Ryan Kuffel joined the Eden Prairie Police Department 25 years ago. She spent most of that time on patrol, dealing with all sorts of hair-raising matters which, if left unabated, could have interfered with the exchanges of goods and services requisite for magazine publication. For that, Officer Kuffel has Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sincerest gratitude.

“I got a nice change of pace in 2007, when I was selected to teach CounterAct – a drug, alcohol and violence prevention program – to Oak Point fifth graders,” recounted Officer Kuffel. “I instantly fell in love with being a school cop, and treasure those three years I spent helping kids learn, grow, become good citizens, and appreciate that cops are ordinary people just like anyone else.

“I was delighted to accept a permanent position as juvenile liaison officer in 2016. I was assigned to Central Middle School, Cedar Ridge, Forest Hills, and Little Eagles, and soon resumed teaching CounterAct as well.

“Defending our precious children is only one of my duties. I also perform child protection work, investigate crimes against minors, and manage reports that come through schools’ staff, children, and parents. Part of the goal is making police services more accessible to the most vulnerable members of our community. Another is to correct deviant behaviors – really, the kinds of mistakes anyone can regret making when they’re young –without involving the legal system.

“The longer I serve, the greater the reward. I’m now getting to watch high school students and young adults using the same skills I taught them back in fifth grade. Just the other day, a senior told me he still writes down something positive and sticks it in his pocket every once in a while; that it helps him stay focused on what matters in the long run. I know it’s just a small thing, but don’t all big things start out small?”

Community Leader of the Year
Officer Ryan Kuffel,

Samantha Curtiss has always had a passion for working with kids. From babysitting to working in her church’s nursery, she has brought patience, care, and a genuine love for being around little ones.

“I don’t think I could have been anything except for a teacher,” said Samantha. “I take too much joy from working with children. Making an impact in their lives. Seeing how far they can grow. Also, I could never sit behind a computer all day.”

Samantha’s road to Oak Point Elementary wasn’t a straight one. “I started off teaching fourth grade in Carver County,” continued Samantha. “It was one day determined that Carver County had too many teachers, and that I was one of the too many ones. It was hard to leave a school and families I enjoyed, but it feels as if I was always meant to be in the Eden Prairie School District. I am so thankful to be here.”

“I’ve been at Oak Point Elementary for six years now, and I couldn’t be happier. Transitioning from fourth grade to second has been a fascinating experience. While the curriculum looks different for younger students, so too do their levels of independence, conflict resolution skills, and emotional regulation. I enjoy helping them build these essential skills that contribute to their success inside and outside the classroom.

“When you spend your days surrounded by 7- and 8-year-olds, forming meaningful relationships with them isn’t just inevitable. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job. What I love most is showing each child that they matter, that I genuinely care about who they are, and that they’re worth knowing. And when they respond with a drawing, a note, or even a simple smile, it reminds me that I matter to them too, and that I’m someone worth knowing in their eyes.”

Teacher of the Year (Early Childhood – 5th Grade)

Samantha Curtiss,

Katy Anderson, a teacher of 36 years, is on special assignment at Prairie View, Cedar Ridge, Oak Point, and EP Online. She’s supporting her fellow Eden Prairie teachers and staff in their quest to continuously improve – a tall order, because Eden Prairie teachers are already amazing. Just look at how many of them won and were nominated for Legacy Awards this year.

“I’m a Q Comp coach,” said Katy. “I have the great honor of supporting teachers and specialists by reflecting with them on their practices, shining a light on all the great things they’re doing, and connecting them with other educators and resources that will help them achieve their goals.

“I’ve coached for three years now, and I’ll never tire of watching my peers pour their hearts and souls into their classrooms and workspaces. I’m in awe of how much intentionality lies behind each decision our teachers and staff make. Nothing happens by chance. It’s all a labor of love.

“I’m also amazed by how much of themselves teachers and staff give. In addition to all the time they pour into students, they’re also sharing their time with me. Ultimately, everything they do is for the wonderful students and families of our community. It really testifies to how devoted they are to improving the Eden Prairie Schools experience.

“Giving is the status quo in this school district, which has benefitted so much from its caring staff over the years, who in turn have benefited from so many generous grants awarded by FEPS. All that selflessness has created virtually endless opportunities to learn and to continuously evolve in our roles. We are incredibly fortunate.

“Like every other Legacy Award winner, I’m honored and humbled that anyone would take time out of their busy day to nominate me. I am filled with profound gratitude. It is yet another testament to the beauty and dedication of the people that make up Eden Prairie Schools.”

Staff Member of the Year

So many great people. Not enough magazine pages. Here’s to this year's Legacy Award winners whom we sadly couldn’t feature.

PROP FOOD SHELF

OPEN YOUR HEART TO OUR NEIGHBORS IN NEED

The most elemental act of human kindness is this: giving food to those most in need of it.

PROP Food Shelf gives shape to that kindness right here in Eden Prairie. It provides nourishment to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity, as well as employment assistance, short-term emergency financial assistance, on-site mental health counseling, financial literacy mentoring, and nutritional and wellness coaching.

“Sadly, the community’s need for PROP Food Shelf only appears to be growing,” said Jenifer Loon, executive director. “We served 5,164 individuals during our previous fiscal year: a 63 percent escalation over two years prior. We’re on track to serve over 500 additional clients during this year as well.

“This month, PROP Food Shelf is asking the community to share their love for our neighbors in need. Every dollar given to PROP from July 1st to 31st will be proportionally matched by the Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless Foundation, which partners with organizations serving Minnesotans in need of life’s most basic necessities: food, shelter, and safety. The Open Your Heart Summer Challenge campaign amplifies the direct good your tax-deductible cash donation can do for our community!

“This boost could not be more opportunely timed. July is one of PROP Food Shelf’s busiest months, largely because school breakfasts and lunches are no longer taking pressure off families’ grocery budgets.

“We are always grateful for food donations, such as the 1,200 boxes of macaroni and cheese recently brought to us by a church group, but we also need the flexibility cash uniquely provides. For example, we recently served a client named Susan, who came to us after leaving an abusive relationship. She and her child with special needs had nowhere to stay. She did not know where to begin looking for a job. Susan visited the PROP Food

Mart, and also received employment counseling, short-term financial aid, and other services we can only provide by virtue of our supporters’ generous cash donations.

“Susan and her child are now stable. She has an apartment, a good job, and a whole new outlook on life, and it is all thanks to a little bit of kindness.”

Whether drifting along the expansive Mississippi or relaxing on tranquil lake waters, every cruise promises exceptional sights and memorable moments.

TWO ICONIC ROUTES

Departing from Bohemian Flats Park, the Mississippi River cruises navigate the largest river system in North America right from its Minnesota origin. This route immerses passengers in breathtaking landscapes, including the southern trails of the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, the University of Minnesota campus riverfront, and iconic landmarks such as the 35W Bridge, St. Anthony Falls, and the historic Stone Arch Bridge. Travelers also enjoy stunning downtown Minneapolis skyline views as the boat journeys through the lower St. Anthony Falls lock system.

On the other hand, departures from the Port of Excelsior lead guests onto the vast and serene waters of Lake Minnetonka. Named from the Sioux words “Minne” (water) and “Tonka” (big/great), this lake offers picturesque scenery combined with engaging narration that reveals the rich history and charming stories behind the area.

Both routes provide full-service cash bars and casual snack options, enhancing the cruising experience. Note that cruise routes may adjust due to weather and water way schedules.

OUR PEDEGO OUTING

Make Way for the Electric Bikers

I may be a regional magazine publisher, but I believe my true calling in life was to lead a biker gang. I’d have named my gang something intimidating, such as “Frowning Dudes” or “The Big Nasties.” We would barrel down lonesome highways together, with no man to call our master and no horizon too distant for our hogs to reach.

“BRUMMM, B-R-RUMMM” I thought to myself, manipulating the throttle on my e-bike like it belonged to a 1,200cc sled.

Thank you, Pedego, for allowing me to live out a fraction of my fantasy.

It was a fine spring day, with air crisp and sweet as the chips in a scoop of mint chocolate ice cream. I’d assembled a crew at Pedego of Eden Prairie consisting of myself, my beautiful wife Shannon, and eight great friends. Pedego had prepared for our arrival by lining up ten perfectly sized e-bikes: graceful, futuristic devices, each with a light, quiet motor that gobbles up as much pedal work as its rider commands.

“BRUMMM, B-R-RUMMM” I thought to myself, manipulating the throttle on my e-bike like it belonged to a 1,200cc sled. The simulation wasn’t quite one-to-one, though accelerating from zip to

20 in one steady v-v-v-wip is plenty exhilarating in its own right.

Our Pedego rep played a phenomenal guide. They led us across a two-hour trek through the world’s best scenery (i.e. Eden Prairie’s), answered our many questions about e-bikes, and laughed at all of our clever observations.

My advice? Assemble your own biker gang at Pedego and experience the same thrill we all did. Words cannot describe the niftiness of pedal assist, which lets a rider exert exactly as much effort as they care to. It’ll make you feel like you were…

RED WING, MINNESOTA

A

VERY NICE PLACE YOU SHOULD GO TO

Some weeks ago – never mind how long precisely – having little or no magazine articles to write, and nothing particular to interest me in the Twin Cities, I thought I would drive about a little and see the southeast part of the state.

I think fondly of Red Wing. I went there years ago to inform an article about the place for a different magazine (now defunct, for reasons wholly unrelated to the quality of that article). I brought along my then-girlfriend, who must surely have been impressed by the sort of man who travels out of town “on business,” and seemed equally eager to visit Red Wing now that the Scheller Gem rests on her finger.

Here I feel I ought to have played the role of Stage Manager, summarizing Red Wing’s geography, naming its notable residents, and serving choice morsels of its history. There was a lot of that in the previous article; real bangers, such as “President Rutherford B. Hayes overnighted at Downtown Red Wing’s St. James Hotel in 1878,” and an especially tragic bit about a paddleboat named the Sea Wing and 98 people who never should have boarded it.

But this was to be no field trip. It was only a time to step out of my skin a little, and do anything other than look at a screen.

Put me on record as having never labeled Red Wing a “ghost town.” It’s a bustling, vibrant community filled with shopping and dining and art and culture and every other good thing a community can bustle with. With that being said, I love the quietness of downtown, where old brick buildings rise up like so many mastodons frozen in tundra, and which smells like warm malt syrup when the nearby linseed oil refinery is refining.

We leaned against the railing at Levee Park, facing the river and pretending not to admire the man who figured out the world. He was fishing, at least three high-ABV ice-brewed lagers deep at that moment, and engaged in deep philosophical conversation with his dog – a mongrel dressed in a special vest which allows her inside businesses.

“I wish I were him,” I said to my wife. I still do.

And we visited Red Wing Confectionery, where we bought chocolates shaped like fish and tractors.

And we shopped at Red Wing Shoes, where we observed the famed size 638-1/2 boot and stood in firm agreement that it really and truly is very large.

And we browsed the Uffda Shop, where we entered into similarly mutual agreement that we must purchase jars of Swedish lingonberry preserve to give as gifts to my wife’s sisters.

And we would have toured the Aliveo Military Museum if not for a certain party member’s inexplicable apathy toward war memorabilia.

“Honey,” I said to that very party member. “Do you remember all those years ago when we had lunch at the St. James Hotel, and I asked for us to be reseated in a part of the dining room where we wouldn’t have to look at the boomer wearing a fishnet shirt?” She remembered, but only because I’ve brought it up so many times before.

We didn’t come close to exhausting everything Red Wing has to offer. We self-flagellatingly deprived ourselves of experiencing the Pottery Museum, the panoramic view from Barn Bluff, and a live show at the Sheldon Theatre of Performing Arts. We didn’t even drink responsibly at Red Wing Barrel House (the first established bar in Minnesota, which someone on Reddit very Minnesotanly described as “a pretty dang great place to hang out”).

Next time. There’s always next time.

And besides, we couldn’t have stayed much longer without seriously cutting into our next important stop: fabulous Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, where we encountered the most devilish “More More Chilli” slot machine ever assembled. We failed miserably at lining up chihuahuas, banditos, roosters, and chile peppers. I keep hoping to ask my accountant if we can spin the damage as a tax-deductible donation to the Prairie Island Indian Community, but he has apparently been unable to access his phone or computer since last April.

You can’t win ‘em all. But you can be in Red Wing in about an hour if you leave your home right now, which is quite a nice consolation prize. So long as you promise not to spend any money there that you otherwise could have in Eden Prairie, then you're encouraged to plan your visit at RedWing.org.

EDEN PRAIRIE LIFESTYLE’S 5TH ANNIVERSARY party

We ate shrimp. We drank wine. We partied all night until around seven. We shared hearty chuckles with our favorite people: the very ones who make publishing this periodical possible. We celebrated our magazine’s fifth anniversary in high style!

“When I first invested in Eden Prairie Lifestyle, I never could have imagined what a treat I was in for,” said John Lee, publisher. “Joining this fine city’s business community will forever remain the best move of my career, and helping its members accomplish their goals has given that same career great meaning. Here’s looking forward to another five, ten – no – 100 years of Eden Prairie Lifestyle! ”

“I’m terribly, terribly grateful to have a project like Eden Prairie Lifestyle,” thought David Scheller, publication director. “Every single client of ours is a joy to work with, and I would never say otherwise if they weren’t. Writing articles about them is the greatest fun I can have as a writer. And believe me: being one of those is an absolute scream.”

“I love these anniversary parties,” said Nina Phouthasack, David’s wife. “David takes me to the Albertville Premium Outlets each time I agree to attend one.”

• Our gratitude to Tavern 4&5 for hosting the fête: eternal.

• Our thanks to Amalia Moreno-Damgaard, Baker’s Ribs, Bella Gina Boutique, Bill’s Toggery, Cadence Chiropractic, Kevin’s Italian Bistro, The Mustard Seed, and T.J. Hooligan’s for supplying raffle prizes: unbounded.

• Our appreciation for the treats served by Nothing Bundt Cakes and Sergeant Shortbread: too vast to fit inside a universe-sized appreciation vessel.
