here's something about Thanksgiving that makes it my favorite holiday. Whether that be because of the crisp fall air, the good food, the amusing table conversation, or a combination of it all. Regardless, every year I look forward to sitting down with loved ones and inhaling piles of stuffing, mashed potatoes, and green bean casserole.

A few years back, when I was still in college, I wasn't able to make the trip home for the 'Johnson Family Thanksgiving'. So instead of Skyping my folks back home while microwaving up a frozen turkey dinner, I hosted a "Friends-giving" with my roommate and a large number of our friends. Although it wasn't perfect, and I don't think we even had turkey (no one wanted to take on that battle), it really gave me that Hallmark Holiday warmness. Because even though I was away from all of my family I was with the people that had become my support system and that I loved. What I'm trying to say is that the Friends-giving I had 4 years ago is the Thanksgiving that I learned what being thankful truly is. I was so grateful to have created a home away from home and have found a group of people that felt like family. And the next year when I actually did make it home to spend the holiday with my family I realized how much I truly took it for granted. So whether you're spending Thanksgiving with your relatives, or with the family you've created, I wish you the warmest holiday. Cheers,

Right? The image that best captures this was made by Norman Rockwell. And that picture, that unattainable goal, has stressed holiday hosts far more than determining who has to sit next to Uncle Bill, who talks nonstop at the table, waving his loaded fork while gravy and cranberry sauce rain down on those closest to him. Curse you, Mr. Rockwell, and every November food magazine with a cover photo of a Martha Stewart-like Thanksgiving spread. Those picture-perfect spreads taunt us at the checkout lane as the cashier rings up our can of cranberries. That bronze beauty of a bird will never grace my or your holiday table. But we will try. Pour a glass of wine ...or a mug of mulled cider...and consider these options.

Think back to past turkey dinners you have attended. Who asks for a wing? Do guests ever help themselves to those mammoth legs? Unlikely. (Unless your guests include Renaissance festival groupies). If the white meat is the clear choice, roast just the breast. So much easier. Deep fry a whole turkey. Really? If your family gathering needs more drama, by all means, risk creating a fireball. And have an extra pumpkin pie set aside for the firefighters who come to extinguish the bird and your dreams of the perfect Thanksgiving meal. Smoke the star of the meal. It will look great, taste wonderful, and given that T-day temps in MN can hover well below freezing, be sure to smile before your face freezes as you spend 12 hours outside monitoring it. Hide the bird. No. Not in the garage. Surround it with delicious sides; gourmet ones, for sure, but be sure to have sweet potatoes covered with golden brown marshmallows (which will divert their attention from the pale turkey). Darken the dining room and bring out those candle holders that you inherited. Candlelight equals dim light, and it will hide your wrinkles and the un-photogenic bird; a win/win option. Do what many professional cooks suggest: cut the bird up prior to cooking. Dark meat takes longer to cook, so put it in the oven first. You can have moist white meat and dark meat that doesn't look as bloody as an episode of Game of Thrones. And you avoid wrestling a 20-pound hot bird, which can be challenging, not to mention seriously dangerous. But you insist on duplicating the Rockwell picture? Then do The Switch. Hire a food stylist to mimic the cover photos of turkeys by working their magic: they will spray paint the bird so that it is as brown as a Scandinavian Minnesotan after they have logged too many hours in a tanning bed while preparing to visit the tropics in January. Saliva will flow when this totally inedible dish is presented. Bring the prop bird to the table and savor the oohs and aahs. Then run it back to the kitchen, bring the precooked and presliced bird out of the fridge, microwave it, clang the knife on the sharpening stone, and return to the dining room with the steaming platter of sliced turkey. And don't forget to add a sprig of parsley. Enjoy the feast, but the focus should be on family and friends.

A SAFET Y NET FOR LOCAL HOMELESS YOUTH ARTICLE NANCY RENNEKE
W
hat does “drop-in” mean to you? A cup of coffee with your neighbor, a visit with your mom or a quick manicure? Now,
imagine that you’re homeless. Even worse, you’re on your own and only 17. For homeless young people, “drop-in” can mean a lifeline to their most basic needs – food and a safe place to sleep. A local non-profit, MoveFwd (formerly Teens Alone), is partnering with Eden Prairie’s Hennepin County Library and People Reaching Out to People’s (PROP) food shelf to offer drop-in services to Eden Prairie’s homeless kids. Eden Prairie is a suburb filled with spacious parks, great schools and pretty neighborhoods. It’s surprising that young people are homeless in our community. “Couch-hopping” is one of the reasons youth homelessness is almost invisible in our corner of the metro area. Kids are sleeping on friends’ couches - taking turns with different families because they lack stable housing. During the summer, those without couch-hopping options camped in cars and under bridges. Now that the nights are colder, they need to find warmer, safer places to sleep. In some ways, it’s harder being homeless in Eden Prairie than in downtown Minneapolis. Public transportation is limited. There are fewer options for indoor public spaces to stay warm. Because the problem is rarer in the suburbs, homeless kids may feel even more isolated than they would downtown. It’s difficult to be homeless and blend in at school. About a year ago, MoveFwd staff recognized there were homeless young people in Eden Prairie who weren’t getting the help they needed. One significant barrier: transportation. MoveFwd offices are centrally located for the four school districts they serve (Eden Prairie, Hopkins, St Louis Park and Wayzata). But it’s complicated for Eden Prairie students to navigate to the Hopkins offices on buses. MoveFwd decided to “leave no stone unturned” in proactively finding homeless kids. The case managers at MoveFwd also knew that the Eden Prairie library was a safe space where homeless young people studied and accessed the internet. They sought out a partnership with the librarians there last fall. MoveFwd posts hours on its website to inform young people they can drop-in at the library or their Hopkins offices without an appointment. They can connect to places to sleep and to free counseling. MoveFwd case managers bring an “outreach bag” to drop-in hours at the library containing items similar to those in the main office’s “personal care closet:” gift cards to Cub and Target, bus tokens, shelf-stable food, clean socks, toiletries and blankets. Drop-in clients looking for work might get help with obtaining a social security number or writing a resume. The library proved to be a perfect fit and the MoveFwd staff was committed to increase its outreach further. They added drop-in hours at PROP’s food shelf in Eden Prairie and started “street outreach,” meeting homeless young people where they congregate to help them access MoveFwd services. 24

“DAWN” HELPS HER MOM BUY FOOD FOR HER YOUNGER SIBLING The masters level counselors and case managers at MoveFwd are reluctant to take any credit for their clients’ successes. They instead focus on the resilience and courage required of young people navigating unstable housing and acknowledge the hard work it takes to juggle school, a job and homelessness. But they are literally saving lives. Even in our upscale community, it’s not safe for a young person to “camp” outdoors overnight. Some homeless young people trade sex for a roof over their heads. The collaboration between MoveFwd and both our local library and PROP helps connect Eden Prairie youth to safe places to sleep, food, transportation and ultimately, more hopeful circumstances. They know they’re doing meaningful work. The agency’s latest annual survey indicated that 96% of their clients said, “after working with MoveFwd I am better at solving problems.” School staff in the four

It’s a preventable tragedy.” These young people are often striving to stay in school while juggling part time jobs with sports and school activities. She says they want to stay in Eden Prairie to be near school, their jobs and friends. They’re often afraid to go to a downtown shelter. Even facing the challenges of homelessness, they are generous. Granger says that when they offer a homeless young person extra food, it’s not uncommon to hear, “thanks, but I want to leave some for the other kids.” MoveFwd has been around since 1990, founded to offer free counseling to help young people stay safe. They counsel kids “up stream” to prevent homelessness. They tailor custom counseling groups to meet requests from individual schools. Most referrals for counseling come from school guidance counselors. MoveFwd works with 18 middle and high schools in four west suburban school districts, including Eden Prairie. They helped 389 clients ages 12-24 in the west metro last year; 130 of them were homeless.

attendees remain basically the same and the day’s line-up of events pretty much stays unchanged year after year.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Because families can get oddly peculiar about Thanksgiving and Christmas, and there are so many blended families today, it can be a real challenge to decide how best to allocate time with family when there are lots of family units to consider. My kids are from a previous marriage, and when I remarried, my new husband and I decided early on that we weren’t going to subject our kids to a family tug-o-war at holidays. We didn’t want our kids to be pressured to bounce from house to house—it was a holiday after all, shouldn’t they be allowed to enjoy it? My hubby and I decided we would simply celebrate the holiday when we could all be together; after all, isn’t Thanksgiving about gratitude and taking a moment to reflect on our blessings, rather than a specific day on the calendar? On the other hand, if cooking a feast is your way of showing your family that you love them, then go for it! But, on the outside chance that it’s not? Forget it and do something enjoyable with your family. Go for a hike, watch fun movies, toss a pizza in the oven, play games, whatever—just enjoy time with your family. Heck, even watch football if you want. Also, if going to a family member’s home to celebrate the day causes you stress, give yourself permission to take a pass—family drama and old wounds can resurface during holiday get-togethers— and simply take care of yourself (sometimes it’s best to feel gratitude for your family from a distance) Other folks, however, choose to observe the holiday in an altogether different manner, by treating the time away from work as an opportunity to take a short vacation, reunite with friends, catch up on chores around the house or simply relax. THE REASON FOR THE SEASON
Thanksgiving—the real meaning of Thanksgiving—is to reflect on our lives, to take a moment to contemplate our blessings, our families, our health, friends, and those things for which we are grateful. How you choose to honor the holiday is your personal choice, so make it memorable!

true to the Land Rover moniker by retaining impressive off-road capabilities. With a base price of $50,895, the Velar balances the elegance of the Evoque with the brawn of the Sport, filling a gap in their SUV lineup. The Range Rover Velar will fall into class with the BMW X4 and the Mercedes GLE. Having said this, it is hard to truly compare it to other vehicles in-class, due to its innovative technology, minimalistic styling, and extensive capabilities. The Velar is one of the most customizable vehicles around, both inside and out. Interior options include unique seating choices and exclusive materials such as wool and synthetic suede. Finishes range from aluminum and various types of wood up to woven copper and carbon fiber. Exterior colors remain on the neutral side and can be accented with a contrasting roof and an endless choice of wheels. Customizability continues digitally with two 10 inch touchscreen displays controlling ambiance settings, terrain response, and multi-zone climate control. Dual screens improve access to media and Bluetooth services as the lower screen can control both without interrupting GPS guidance on the upper screen.
