SAM NOBLE MUSEUM EXHIBIT TITLED ‘IN THE DARK’ You won’t be afraid of “things that go bump in the night” after you explore the Sam Noble Museum’s newest temporary exhibit, In the Dark. Created by the Cincinnati Museum Center, this hands-on exhibit lets visitors investigate and solve some of the mysteries of darkness using interactive stations, walk-through dioramas, models and engaging explanatory panels. Since prehistoric times, humans have sought to understand darkness and its mysteries, and have learned from nocturnal creatures to create new technologies to disperse the dark and kindle light. In the Dark will be on display at the Sam Noble Museum through Sept. 12. Advance registration is still required. Book tickets online at samnoble museum.ou.edu or by calling 405.325.7977.

GOLF IS ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST ENJOYED GAMES AROUND. The game of golf as we know it today can be attributed to the Scots, although there are records of several stick and ball games throughout history. As far back as the 13th century, the Dutch played a game where a leather ball was hit with the intention of reaching a target several hundred yards away. We as a nation have made great strides to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine and end the pandemic. Thank goodness! One of the ways men and women have been able to keep their spirits high and get great exercise is on the golf course. Playing golf can be excellent exercise, especially if you forgo the cart and walk. Depending on the course, four or more miles can be walked during 18 holes. When you love the game, it hardly feels like exercise. Lasting friendships have been started on the golf course, not to mention many business deals!

Golf courses are generally well-kept and beautifully created. Many new courses today are designed to incorporate the surrounding natural elements. Imagine golfing at a world-class course in different countries all in one trip. Imagine not having to organize tee times, transportation, club cleaning and so on. Imagine having your favorite luxury hotel follow you wherever you go with everything you need for the perfect vacation. AmaWaterways has created a match made in heaven to enable you to do just that—luxury river cruising and golf. Do you want to get away for a few days? Las Vegas is open for business. Las Vegas is no longer known for just gambling… but for great shows, great restaurants and great golf courses. A relatively new and very challenging course in Las Vegas is the Shadow Creek Golf Club. This 18-hole championship course, designed by Tom Frazio, features waterfalls and beautiful gardens. Are you looking for a challenge? This course will offer you exactly that challenge. Tee-time reservations are a must! Make your dinner reservations online at OpenTable at the modern Japanese restaurant ZUMA in the Cosmopolitan Hotel, where your tastebuds will be rewarded! When it is 107 degrees in Oklahoma City, what would you think about being on a golf course in Alaska? You could combine golfing, fishing and sightseeing in one tour package. With summer daylight playing hours from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m., Valley of the Eagles Golf Links in Haines, Alaska, is a must! The two most common expressions used when people visit the course are WOW and AWESOME.

I personally have been attracted to TopGolf entertainment destinations. The first one I went to was in Scottsdale, Arizona.TopGolf is a super place to hang out if you are not a golfer but want to learn how to golf. There is so much to do in one location, including fun, food and drinks. TopGolf entertainment destinations also offer golf lessons. Playing any sport builds character, but golf provides a chance to be introspective during the process. You get to feel the sunshine on your shoulders while completing a challenge and enjoying a day with friends, or at least others who love the game as much as you do. Golf is just plain fun. The professional travel agents at Travel Leaders Bentley Hedges can custom a golf package just for you, or a group of your friends. Give us a call at 405.237.3333.

SCORING SHOTS! 1
PROBABLY THE QUICKEST WAY TO PLAY BETTER GOLF
WHO WANTS TO SHOOT LOWER SCORES? Most likely, the answer’s most of you! While it can be several parts of your golf game that need to improve to achieve your goals. I would like to explain, perhaps the quickest way to play better golf, the scoring shots! You could say all shots are scoring shots and you would be somewhat correct. But more specifically, the shots from about 130 yards and closer to the hole. We have multiple options when playing these shots, depending in the lie of the ball, hole location on the green and wind. Let’s say the shot is 80 yards, from the fairway in calm wind and hole located on the front section of the green. In this case, I have selected my 48* wedge and will feel a swing length of about ¾ of full. [Picture 1] This will allow control with the flight of the golf ball. However, for a shot from 110 into the wind and a hole location that is on the back of the green, I would choose a less-lofted club like a 9 iron to carry the ball to the front 1/3 of the green and let the ball roll back to the hole. [Picture #2] All of these shots need to be played with an open stance (Picture #3, left foot back, for the right handed player], handle ahead of the clubhead and weight on the left or forward foot, to allow the club to descend into the ball. There are many options to play these scoring shots; I would encourage you to try them using different clubs. If you need help with this shot or any part of your golf game, give us a call at The Trails Golf Shop, 405.360.1920, or see your PGA Golf Professional staff.

As you would expect, Bentley has traveled the globe, organized countless cruises and group excursions, and can take credit for multiple generations of clients. His team also rose to the occasion post 9/11, when all airline flights were grounded. “At that time, we serviced the FAA travel account, and our staff had to bring people back home from all over the world,” he said. “In 50 years, I have never been prouder of them.” Above all, Bentley said, it’s been wonderful to work with his wife, Bonnie, and only daughter, Angie, who’s now the agency’s co-owner, president and CEO. A widower prior to marrying Bonnie (the company’s vice president of sales and marketing), their blended family includes five children, eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and Windy, their “coronavirus puppy.” At age 92, Bentley isn’t ready to sit on the front porch just yet. He still organizes group tours, and is now developing a hemp farm— literally returning full circle to his roots as an Oklahoma farm boy. “I’ll do it as long as I can climb on a tractor,” he said. “I love being outdoors in the sun. But most of all, I still love to travel.”

GENERATIONAL LEADERS (CONTINUED)
T.W. SHANNON
CEO, Chickasaw Community Bank
“Life moves at the speed of relationships.” That quote rings true for T.W. Shannon, CEO of Chickasaw Community Bank, who has been building relationships, breaking barriers and making history since the beginning of his professional career. After an 11th-grade teacher “lit the spark” by recognizing his writing skills, T.W. determined to combine his love of writing and interest in politics. His skills earned him prestigious positions working for Oklahoma Congressman JC Watts and Sen. Tom Cole, while he spent evenings earning his law degree. From there it was a short step from working for elected officials, to becoming one himself. T.W. made history in January 2013, when at age 34 he became the youngest-ever speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, as well as the first Chickasaw and first African American to hold the post. He was also the first Republican ever elected to Oklahoma’s Congressional District 64. After leaving office, T.W. became a high-level administrator for the Chickasaw Nation, and in 2017 was named CEO of Chickasaw Community Bank. Under his leadership, the bank has doubled its assets and helped thousands of people stay financially afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic. On the national level, T.W. serves on the board of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE), a Washington-based think tank dedicated to creating opportunities for people to escape generational poverty.

For 20 years, Mark has been married to fellow dentist and classmate Dr. Stacy Revels, who he met at Eskimo Joe’s in Stillwater, before they were both dental students. While he’s a die-hard Sooner and she was a graduate of Oklahoma State University, “my love for OU could not withstand my love for her,” he said, laughing. Today, Stacy Revels operates a private dental practice in Chickasha, and they are the proud parents of two sons: Blaine, 11, and Blake, 7. The family loves to travel, and Mark is known as a “rabid” OU fan. “Following OU athletics has always been a passion, and OU-Texas weekend holds a special place in my heart,” he said, noting that he will attend his 30th straight OU/Texas game in 2021. “My wife thinks it’s a ‘medical impairment,’” he said with a laugh, “but she enjoys going along for the shopping!”

DEREK GEIGES Owner
Solid Rock Personal Training
As a successful University of Oklahoma student-athlete, Derek Geiges early on learned the importance of good work habits and discipline. Wrestling helped him overcome a lot of early-life adversity, solidified his love of strength and endurance training, and, he said, taught him invaluable skills for the transformation from an athletic to professional career. After graduating from OU, Derek spent two years serving the Norman community as a police officer before taking a leap of faith and opening his own fitness studio, Solid Rock Personal Training, in 2016. For he and his young family, it’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience. “I learned a lot when I was with the Norman PD, but I also knew I needed to pursue what I truly loved,” he said. “I decided to become a personal trainer because I absolutely love fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. I get the opportunity to inspire others to look good, move well and feel great so they can live an active lifestyle. Most individuals are not living a life to their full potential because their health is holding them back, and I love helping people discover the best version of themselves so they can have a higher quality of life.”

A RANCH BUILT ON TRADITION (CONTINUED)
Kirk says the family finds fulfillment in maintaining the ranch and living out the dream that was started during the decade of the poodle skirt, drive-through restaurants and drive-in movies. He also wants readers to know that local, farm-raised grass fed beef is not only healthy, but a great investment for your family and your grocery budget. “Purchasing a whole or half of a beef not only helps the local producer; it helps the local economy, the butcher, the feed store and the veterinarian … they all benefit from your purchase, and you get a superior product, a healthier product than you can ever purchase from the grocery store.” As a bonus, he noted, the consumer is going to pay the same price per pound for steaks as they do for hamburger meat, which is especially helpful when looking to fill the freezer with enough beef to last the year.

03. WHEN DID YOU START YOUR COLLECTION? I started my collection in high school when I was taking agricultural sciences. I thought they were the cutest of the animals we got to work with and found that they are highly intelligent and emotional animals. I will have been collecting them for about 14 years now. I would love to own a pig or two once we have enough space for them and are in our forever home. My favorite piece would have to be Pearl, a painting of pig with pearl earrings. 04. WHERE DO YOU FIND ITEMS FOR THE COLLECTION? I’ve gotten most of them as gifts from friends, family and coworkers. I do try to purchase from local artists as well. 05. WHERE IS THE COLLECTION DISPLAYED? I like to have them displayed all through the house. 06. ANY OTHER HOBBIES? That’s a big question. I love most things crafting. I sow, crochet and knit. I love gardening, both indoor and out. I also like to paint and draw when the inspiration hits me. When I’m not working on a hobby or tending the garden, I do like to play video games and board games to pass the time. We also have a weekly Dungeons and Dragons game with our friends in Colorado via webcam. CONTINUED >

TIM BENNE T A native of Edmond, Tim Bennet moved to Norman to attend OU in 2005, where he completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in professional writing. He is the author of the comic book mini-series Trouble Stream, published by Vybinart in 2020, which was illustrated by his college friends Jeff Zhang and Wil Whalen. They sold the comic to VybinArt in 2014. Tim has also worked on other comic projects for the publisher, and they have expressed interest in a sequel to the Trouble Stream miniseries. 01. SIZE OF YOUR COLLECTION? My collection is a combination of what my dad, Mark, collected since he was a kid starting in the 1960s, and my own collection. In total I have 24 “long boxes” of comics, each of which holds about 200 comics. A quick calculation tells me that this is somewhere in the vicinity of 4,800 comics. This part of the collection is all single-issue “floppies,” usually about 22-30 pages long. I also collect graphic novels and comic book collections and have around 200 bound collections on bookshelves. 02. WHAT TYPES OF COMIC BOOKS? My dad mostly collected Marvel Comics, specifically Spider-Man. He started collecting Spider-Man in 1964, two years after SpiderMan’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15. The first Spider-Man issue in his collection chronologically is The Amazing SpiderMan #17. Starting with that issue, my dad collected every appearance of Spider-Man in a comic book until I was in high school, when I started collecting and took over the Spider-Man collection. This includes not only comic books in which Spider-Man was the main feature, but every guest appearance or team feature that included the character as Tim Bennet (Photography Lindsey Davies)

Behind-the-Scene Stars MEET NORMAN PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY'S SCOTT "POPS" WARD
NAME :
SCOTT WARD E MPLOY E R & TITLE :
NORMAN PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY, BUSINESS MANAGER
Earlier in his career, Scott partnered with his mother in operating two Christian book and gift stores for 25 years in Norman and Shawnee. "I’ve been privileged to work with family for the last 30 years," he says.
01 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT? I have been a lifetime blood donor. I have the universal blood type O and have been honored to donate over 100 units. 02 WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? My family 03 SPECIAL MEMORIES? My daughters. They are my heroes, and it has been such a blessing to watch them grow up and mature into wonderful wives and mothers. They are both health care professionals serving the Norman community. They definitely favor their mother! 04 FUTURE DREAMS? To live a long, productive life through proper nutrition, exercise and prayer. I’m still working on the nutrition part.

AMANDA WAR D, D. D. S . , PLLC, NOR MAN PE DIATR IC DE NTIS TRY, WR ITE S: “Scott ‘Pops’ Ward—or as I call him, Dad—is such a huge asset to our practice. Scott is our business manager, handling all things payroll, bills and banking, all vital to having a successful business. However, where he really shines is his care for all of us in the office: staff, patients and fish included. He always has a friendly word and smile for everyone. He runs endless errands to keep us well-fed and in stock of all the necessities. And he takes care of the fish tank, Norman Pediatric Dentistry’s crown jewel! He spends countless hours tending to it and ensuring it’s ready for all the patients who enjoy it so much! We are so thankful for Pops and his willingness to take care of any ‘Pops’ jobs’ with a smile. He keeps NPD running smoothly and looking good!”
