Heir·loom

“a valuable object that has belonged to a family for several generations.” - Oxford Languages

My passion for vintage items and the thrill of the hunt for unique pieces has fueled the Heirloom business. This business began on a much smaller scale when I was filling one 10 x 10 booth at another local business. Over the last five years Heirloom has expanded into three much larger booths at multiple local businesses. It has always been a dream of mine to have my own storefront. In 2022 the perfect space became available and I took the leap to finally own my own shop. After a long 9 month restoration process, the building finally came together. The history of this building made it special to me It was originally a family owned engine repair shop that was built in 1945 The few pieces that were preserved reside in the shop today The most special one being the checkout counter

Every piece you find in the store is special in some way Each item is hand picked because of its story I have always valued the preservation of vintage items and want to offer these pieces to be appreciated by the next generations. Even though each item is individually sourced, I have made it my mission to offer affordable prices. You never know what you’ll find at Heirloom Chattanooga! It may be your next family heirloom to be passed along for generations! The Heirloom family hopes to see you soon!

Home Is Where The Heart Is

Home is where the heart is.

Curating this issue with partners and artisans around the greater Chattanooga area has been incredibly eye opening. Getting to know the people behind the scenes of the home service, design, and housing industries has been an absolute pleasure and I could not be more honored to give our readers a glimpse into their brands and services.

Having been somewhat of an adventurer over the past twelve years, I have had the chance to live in a variety of different homes and spaces. Creating a place to call your own is essential for captivating your peace in order to recharge your soul. The choices can range from exteriors and interiors, location and amenities, to choosing the right color and shingle. With so many decisions to make, it is important that all of the details align as we build a haven for our families and loved ones to gather and grow together.

Whether it’s a certain painting that fills you with gratitude, a picture by the bedside table that warms your heart or a favorite coffee mug that instantly brightens your day, all of these things make a house a home.

This month is full of opportunities to enhance our homes and our lives. We visit Mosaic Home & Market where owner Yancey Kenna Martin merges her passion for interior design and gourmet food into an intimate boutique shopping experience. We get advice from Wendy Dixon of Keller Williams about preparing to purchase a new home and we learn about the Top 5 Home Trends for 2024 from Piper Stromatt of Boutique Living by Curate. We visit the Caverns event venue where a yurt village creates a sense of community for concertgoers and we catch up with Scott Stapp, lead vocalist for the band Creed, who is working on a new album and will be performing at the Signal this month. We learn more about Jason Lentz' journey to building his business Homeworks Construction, and we bring you a mouth-watering recipe by Chef Rebecca Barron, Culinary Director for local staple Alleia.

Enjoy our Home issue and we hope that no matter where you call home, you find a connection in this issue that helps make your dreams come true.

Cheers!

Martin moved to Chattanooga via New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles, bringing with her a love for eclectic artisan creations. “When I moved here and began working with clients, I ran into a bit of a challenge finding accessories, the little things that make a house feel like a home, that fit my aesthetic,” she explained. “People come to me because they want quality, color, pattern, and texture. We have fabulous stores here, but I wasn't seeing the artisan aesthetic being expressed as well in the market.”

She also loves to entertain and host dinner parties, specifically creating beautiful tablescapes, and would often have trouble finding what she wanted for final touches, including items for her menu. “I'm really drawn to beauty and quality, and I want that expressed in my hosting too. Honestly, I'm not the world's biggest chef, but I'm fabulous at reheating,” Martin shared with a chuckle. “So, there were a couple of stores in Atlanta where I was going to get the things that I needed.” Martin opened

Mosaic Home and Market to fill this gap in the Chattanooga market.   Everything in the shop reflects quality craftmanship and an elevated aesthetic chosen by Martin. Walking through Mosaic Home means connecting with artisans from around the world. Customers find Tamegroute pottery from Morocco, marble paper photo albums from Milan, earthenware pottery from France, linens from Egypt, and hand-painted dinnerware from Portugal, Greece, and Italy. For a local flare, customers will find Martin’s collaborations with Ignis

Glass for handblown tumblers and goblets and designer paper flowers made by local artist Ashley Folkner. “I'm getting to tell the stories of so many incredible artists,” she said. “To walk around, touch, feel, and be in the same room as their expertise and as their creations is so fun.”

“Downstairs in the market, we apply the same principles of quality and beauty to the food we carry, sourcing from small producers with the best quality,” Martin shared. “You’ll find take-and-bake gourmet meals, bringing a little bit of a gourmet feel right

here in Chattanooga.” Entrees include pizza from New York, soup dumplings from San Francisco, Alaskan seafood, southern staples such as pot pies from a catering company in North Carolina, and from-scratch pasta, ravioli, and fresh spaghetti from an Italian family in New Jersey. Also available are Indian dishes from local chef Sujata Singh of Spice Trail. Dessert offerings include from-scratch pies, also available in a gluten-free option.

The market includes ready-to-go meals for any time of day, including breakfast, but also components such as marinated proteins, soups, and broths - all available for the easy creation of a gourmet meal without all the stress.

HOW LUCY SMALL'S BUSINESS REDUCES STRESS FOR HOME BUILDERS

State & Season

ROAD TRIP | SHOPPING
14

We spoke with Lucy Small of State & Season about her journey to ownership of State & Season and her passion for helping others create a modern, country life.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I am a designer who also really focuses on the construction and material selection part of any home or business, because I do both commercial and residential. I have the only showroom in North Georgia, Southern Tennessee, and Western North Carolina that specializes in material selections that are largely high-end and are imported for custom homes and businesses.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

Having a family and not really wanting to be in a city anymore brought us here. So did the experience of going through designing and building our property because we are very much in an area with unlimited possibilities. People can really imagine what they want and do it. So, I was happy to move from the hustle and bustle of commercial spaces to residential ones because it still had the appeal that every space is different, every space is unique and people are really open to unique materials.

And again, our own personal experience of building here really confirmed that because I really wanted to create a space that had everything I would have wanted when we were in the process. We spent a lot of leg work, time and money to try and figure out what we now offer to people.

WHAT MAKES STATE & SEASON UNIQUE?

What makes State and Season unique is that we are not just interior designers who have an office and charge by the hour or by the square foot. We are a comprehensive whole home design studio where people can come in and find everything they need, no matter what point in the project they’re at.

They can see exterior stone and they can see roofing, windows and doors. And if they are further in their build, they can find tile, countertops, and cabinets. Or they can come in and get wallpaper, furniture, and stuff that is more for finishing a space. It’s the only place you can really see everything all in one space. It’s really meant to take a lot of the stress and intimidation out of the process for homeowners and builders.

THE CAVERNS YURTS

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | TRAVEL
20

Now Featuring Luxurious Yurts for Music Lovers & Thrill Seekers

Nestled in rural Grundy County, Tennessee, The Caverns have attracted music lovers and adventure seekers for years. Featured on PBS, their Cavern Sessions (formerly Bluegrass Underground) have broadcasted the whimsical thrill of experiencing live music deep within a palatial cave.

The concert experience itself remains a bucket-list item for music lovers across the globe, and now the venue has expanded the adventure to include accommodations onsite. Debuting in April 2023, The Yurt Village at the Caverns is the best way to experience the Cavern Sessions in real life.

When we spoke with Joe Lurgio, General Manager at The Caverns, he shared what makes the new glamping options so appealing. “About 70% of our music visitors come from out of state; some are international visitors, even,” Joe explained. Traveling so far, and to such a rural destination, could prove burdensome for many, which led The Caverns to build a village of twenty yurts on their property. A short walk leads visitors from the Yurt Village to the Caverns.

While the Yurts aren’t traditional cabins, they aren’t as rustic as tent camping, either. In fact, the yurts are the epitome of glamping in luxury. Inside, guests will

CONTINUED > 21 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/CHATTANOOGA MARCH 2024

find that the canvas structures are temperature-controlled with large beds, private bathrooms, and a kitchenette. The beds feature beautiful hand-carved wooden headboards and charming quilts that elevate the experience. Outside, the yurts are surrounded by striking decks for outdoor lounging. All of these features work together to create the ultimate escape. One of the most appealing features, however, is the communal fire pit located near the center of the Yurt Village.

Joe explained that one of the unique benefits that has developed from building the Yurt Village is a sense of community amongst concertgoers. Picture this: You make it to the Yurt Village, get settled, then head to a concert you’ve been looking forward to. Fast forward to later that evening, and you’re lounging next to a bonfire, making friends with other visitors who love the same music as you. According to Joe, friendships and comradery are built around the fire ring, which was a founding principle when the Yurt Village was designed.

But it’s not all about the concerts. The Caverns offers adventure for all kinds of visitors and cave enthusiasts. Seven days a week, you can book guided tours through several of the caves, some more strenuous than others. One tour allows guests to learn about the behind the scenes magic of the Cavern Sessions, while another tour takes guests deep into parts of the caverns seen by only a few. The guided tours range from highly adventurous to more leisurely.

For those interested, be sure to plan ahead. Bookings fill up quickly, especially with more popular musicians. In addition to yurts, The Caverns also boast an impressive campground for visitors who prefer the rustic experience, and there are plans to expand with additional yurts and campsites in the future.

MUSIC Monthly

Solo artist and the voice of Creed, Scott Stapp, rocks The Signal on March 14, debuting his new album Higher Power.

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THIS NEW ALBUM?

It's a diary of the human experience that a lot of people are going to connect with. It's also a very textured and layered album. It has some heavydriven, mid-tempo grooving rock songs, but it also has some acoustic-driven songs and simple vocal guitar songs. There is something for everyone.

WHAT IS THE CATALYST BEHIND THE TITLE TRACK, HIGHER POWER?

My whole life, whether I was living in alignment with God or not, God was always there and at the forefront of my mind. Now, trying to live a life of sobriety and in recovery, that song really chronicles part of my journey to get to that place, what got me there, and expressing that parts of me had to die in order for me to live.

WHAT WOULD YOU LOVE READERS TO KNOW?

If they're coming to the show, they can expect a very high-energy and profound journey sonically, musically, and thematically. I think it's a show that they'll remember.

So You Want to Make a Move?

YOUR HOME SELLING PUNCH LIST BY WENDY DIXON OF

Streamline the Process

Assess your financial readiness by checking your credit score, ensuring income stability, and calculating your debt-toincome ratio. Establishing a realistic budget for your next home streamlines the process and makes the transition from selling to buying a good one.

Clean and De-Clutter

Begin by tackling one room at a time, sorting items into categories of keep, donate, and discard. Prioritize de-cluttering spaces like closets and storage areas to create a sense of spaciousness. Doing so will ensure that your home is not only organized, but also poised to make a positive impression on prospective buyers.

Give the Outside an Overhaul

To refresh the exterior of your home, start by maintaining a well-groomed lawn. Apply a fresh coat of paint to any place that shows signs of wear. Pressure wash and make sure that your mailbox is in good condition. These steps frame an inviting exterior, increasing the chances of making a positive first impression on potential buyers.

Research the Market

Begin by selecting a knowledgeable and experienced real estate agent who understands your market. Together, review recent comparable sales in the area to establish a competitive yet realistic listing price for your home. Collaborating with a Realtor empowers sellers with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about the home selling process.

Be Prepared

Addressing both the physical and financial aspects upfront positions you for a smoother and more successful home-selling experience.

Homeworks Construction

From 2008-2009, Jason Lentz noticed a rise in the Chattanooga housing market as his small home remodeling projects slowly started to grow into larger renovations. Nearly 15 years later, Homeworks Construction has completed countless residential remodeling and commercial projects.

After talking with Jason, it is abundantly clear that what sets Homeworks Construction apart is his ability to work hands-on with his clients and form lasting relationships in the process. Building a home encompasses much more than just the design and construction process. Jason goes above and beyond to listen to his clients, advise them, and counsel them throughout the entire process.

WHAT SETS HOMEWORKS CONSTRUCTION APART IS JASON'S ABILITY TO WORK

HANDS-ON WITH HIS CLIENTS AND FORM LASTING RELATIONSHIPS IN THE PROCESS.

In recent years, North Chattanooga has been the most sought-after part of town, but the current target area is now shifting to more historical neighborhoods like the Southside of downtown and St. Elmo. The historic homes of Chattanooga hold a very special place in the city’s architectural landscape, so Justin and his team work hard to ensure that all exterior facades remain intact while the interiors get a more modern upgrade.

Along with St. Elmo, Lookout Mountain is home to many breathtaking Homeworks’ renovations and designs. Jason recently gutted a Sears Kit Home and had to get creative by using soffits to make the vaulted ceiling work for an unexpected, unique architectural detail. While servicing a large portion of homeowners on Lookout, Jason had the opportunity to renovate a commercial project for one of his clients, Caralisa Montgomery.

Caralisa started as a residential client and after working with Jason, decided to hire him to renovate her business, Canopy, a local coffee and wine bar. Within 6 months, Jason had transformed one building into two separate spaces while channeling the interior creative designs with the owner and sketching the details as he went along.

As Chattanooga continues to see a boom in housing expansion, Jason is excited to dabble in the trend of mastering smaller, more efficient, everyday living quarters. A wellthought-out, substantial living space that doesn’t include a hefty cost or take up a large geographical footprint is the next phase of housing. If smaller homes are on the rise, this means that larger outdoor space is necessary. Covered porches and living areas, plus functional outdoor kitchens are a great way to enhance the exterior square footage and embrace the fresh Chattanooga scenery.

We love grilling fish at Alleia Restaurant. Here we pair lovely gulf black grouper with some sweet and savory, along with some nice toastiness from the pine nuts and brown butter. Brown butter is one of my all time favorite ingredients! And this dish is a great weekday meal.

CULINARY CREATIONS FOOD + BEVERAGE

Culinary Creation

Grilled Black Grouper

Served with Butternut Squash, Sautéed Kale, Golden Raisins, Pine Nuts, and Brown Butter Vinaigrette

• 4 7-8 oz filets of gulf black grouper, set on a paper towel in the fridge to extract any extra moisture while preparing other ingredients

• 1 medium sized butternut squash

• 2 cups heavy cream

• 2 quarts of chopped, washed kale leaves, stems removed

• 1 cup golden raisins soaked in 1 cup warm water with a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar (soak for 1 hour and then drain off any liquid)

• ¼ cup lightly toasted pine nuts

• about 1 cup brown butter (Make with 2 sticks of unsalted butter, simmer on medium-low heat until it smells nutty and is a light-medium brown in color. Cool slightly, then strain.)

• 1-2 tbsp of aged balsamic vinegar

• neutral cooking oil

• 4 lemon wedges

• salt and pepper

serves: 4

instructions:

First, you will need to prepare the butternut squash for the purée. Cut 1 medium sized squash in half and scoop out the seeds. Rub with a neutral oil and season with a little salt. Roast in a 400 F degree oven for about 45 minutes or until tender. Once cooled, remove skin and place in the blender with the 2 cups heavy cream and blend until smooth. Add a little water if it’s too thick. Season with salt to taste. I like to start with 1 teaspoon of salt first and then add more until it tastes seasoned enough. Pour into a small saucepan and keep it warm until ready to serve.

Prepare your grill or grill pan and rub your fish with some neutral oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill over medium-high heat turning your fish on the same side at a 90-degree angle once to achieve beautiful grill marks. Leave the other side raw. Set raw side down in a pan with a little melted butter, and set aside while you finish preparing and heating the other ingredients.

In a medium sized saucepan, start with a little bit of oil, and get it warm. Add your kale and sauté until kale is hot and add salt and pepper to taste. Then add the drained raisins, pine nuts, and brown butter. Finish with 1-2 tbsp of aged balsamic vinegar. Set aside on the stove while you finish your fish in the oven.

Now, you will finish your fish in the oven until it’s warmed throughout. The USDA recommends cooking fish to an internal temperature of 145 F degrees. Once it has turned opaque and is flaky, it’s done!

Warm your bowls so your food doesn’t get cold! Then start with a nice spoonful of butternut purée down first, place your sautéed kale mixture down next, along with some of the butter, and top with finished fish.

Serve with a lemon wedge.

Enjoy!
