A DesignJourney of Passion
Functioning as a “one-stop-shop” for home furnishing and decor, Bungalow is also a feast for the senses
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY LOEB

In a world where practicality often overshadows creativity, Judith Balis stands as a shining example of someone who has never relinquished her passion for interior design. From a young age, her love for creative expression and transforming spaces was unmistakable. While other kids played outside, Judith could be found rearranging furniture or fashioning home decor from scraps and found objects. Raised in a single-parent household, she mastered the art of thrifting and upcycling long before it became a trend. To her, creating wasn’t just a hobby; it was an irresistible calling. As she neared college, Judith’s dreams of becoming an interior designer were postponed due to the lack of a suitable program in her hometown, Boise. Instead, she pursued a career in education, becoming a devoted special education teacher. Yet, her heart yearned for more, and she found solace in constantly redecorating her own space and helping friends and family with their homes. It wasn’t until someone pointed out that she should turn her passion into a career that she seriously considered making the leap.
Despite her limited formal experience, Judith’s determination led her to audition for an HGTV show, where she faced the daunting imposter syndrome head-on. Against all odds, she triumphed over another home designer, and her name began to gain recognition. The experience taught her invaluable lessons, propelling her growth as a designer beyond what any formal education could offer.
Judith’s success as a home designer isn’t solely attributed to talent and creativity; it’s her innate ability to connect with people that sets her apart. She believes being a designer is an intimate job, requiring a deep understanding of clients’ personalities, families, and lifestyles. Her advice to aspiring designers is to take psychology classes, emphasizing the importance of reading and understanding people to thrive in this profession.
In 2018, Judith opened her first storefront, Feather and Twine, to share her talent and passion with the Boise community. The response was overwhelming, with lines forming down the street on opening days. What made her store truly magical were the connections that blossomed between customers, who would meet up, catch up, and share their lives over a cup of coffee on the store’s sofa.
Judith Balis
Judith enjoys time in her beautiful home, which features a beautiful blend of more contemporary but comfortable pieces and antique finds with her husband of twenty years, two grown daughters, and two dogs about which she fondly joked seem to rule the house.

As the demand grew, Judith knew it was time for a bigger space to continue fostering those meaningful connections. Thus, in 2021, Bungalow Home Furnishings was born—a place that not only offers a wide range of home goods but also stimulates the senses. Stepping into Bungalow is like entering a warm, inviting cocoon that wraps visitors in an earthy, comforting scent, reminiscent of a cozy bungalow.
Beyond being a one-stop-shop for home decor, Bungalow offers in-home design consultations, ensuring that clients truly transform their houses into homes that reflect their personalities and stories. Judith’s own home exemplifies her design philosophy, with a blend of contemporary comfort and cherished antique finds.
Despite her undeniable success, Judith remains grounded and encourages others to pursue their dreams and passions. She believes in listening to one’s inner voice and paying attention to what truly feels right. For her, life is about finding beauty in the simplest things, reconnecting with the earth and soul, and creating a harmonious work-life balance.
With each new chapter, Judith’s journey continues to inspire and uplift those who cross her path. As she lovingly curates spaces that uplift the human spirit, she teaches us that a home is not merely a collection of

objects but a reflection of the soul that resides within. Through her intimate connections with clients, Judith proves that design is about more than aesthetics—it’s about understanding, empathy, and creating a sanctuary that nurtures the heart and mind.
So, the next time you find yourself wandering through the cozy aisles of Bungalow Home Furnishings , remember that behind every piece lies a tale of passion, perseverance, and the magic of human connection. From her early days, transforming furniture with soda cans, to winning over audiences on HGTV, and finally creating a haven for Boise residents at Bungalow, Judith Balis has woven her love for design into every thread of her life’s tapestry. Her journey is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, the courage to face challenges, and the joy of forging meaningful connections in the pursuit of creating spaces that bring happiness and inspiration to all who enter.

extending your mane
Cami Mathiason knew from an early age that she wanted to be a hairstylist. She loved their ability to make people feel beautiful and confident.
The Boise native grew up with self-employed parents, who helped inspire her to do the same.
“I wanted to be able to have a career that I could be a mom at the same time,” she said. “At 16, I fell in love with hair. Fast-forward 10 years, and I got into the hair extension side.”
Mathiason is the owner of MANE Styling Studio in Meridian, which primarily offers luxury hair extensions and color services.
Having worn hair extensions since she was 18, Mathiason said she came across her current method of offering them when she got a new set for her wedding in 2018.

WITH HAIR

“I had really short, thin hair. You just want beautiful, luscious hair for pictures and just to feel your best,” she said. “I had a local hairstylist introduce me to the Natural Beaded Rows (NBR) method. I found out the soonest training was the week after my wedding. So, instead of a honeymoon, we flew to Huntington Beach, California, and spent the week in training. … My love for the method showed. Six months later, I gave up the clientele I had and solely offered extensions.”
While Mathiason said one of her favorite parts of working with extensions is being able to create a dramatic result, something else offers her more satisfaction.
“That’s definitely helping women that have health issues or autoimmune diseases: people that have significantly lost their hair,” she said. “We’re seeing a lot of COVID hair loss right now. The ability to help them with hair extensions and hair replacement, ... being able to provide that confidence back, that’s the most gratifying part.”
Mathiason had a recent example of a nurse who had contracted COVID-19 four times and lost nearly all of her hair.
“We were able to put extensions in with the little hair that she had,” Mathiason said. “And she actually broke down into tears and was crying when we were finished just because she was so excited to have her normal hair look. She’ll have the hair extensions as she goes through the regrowth process. That happens a lot. We get a lot of tears in our chairs. It’s kind of great, especially being able to help somebody that goes through something that they just have no control over.”
Mathiason’s salon instituted an application process to make sure people were good candidates for extensions.
“It’s definitely a lifestyle,” she said. “We call them the ‘highest low maintenance type of service.’ Maintenance on extensions is about every 8 to 12 weeks. You come in, get them

taken out, and moved up. You want to make sure you can commit to taking care of them to protect your investment.”
Once a guest is approved, Mathiason said they take a deposit, schedule the first appointment, and then custom order the human hair used for the extensions. The hair and the extensions are custom colored to match seamlessly. Then, the extensions are attached.
“Our methods don’t use heat or glue,” Mathiason said of NBR and the Invisible Bead Extensions methods. “We use just beads and strings. You can create a foundation with the beads and the strings and then we attach the hair to that. It’s tied in.”
From there, the hair is styled, ‘after’ shots are taken to go with the ‘before’ photos, and guests are sent home with products and care instructions. All in all, that first appointment can take anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours. As for the cost?
“An average, brand-new install is roughly $1,200, but our prices can range from $500$3,900,” Mathiason said. “Hair extension services are personal to you and your needs. No guest is the same. From there, the tightening reservation every 8-12 weeks can be anywhere from $150 to $350, depending on coloring and how many rows we do.”
With MANE being an extension-focused salon, Mathiason said people travel from across the country to visit. The shop opened in February 2020, and is appointment only.
“I was training with NBR and training with salon owners from all over the country, and I saw a lot of different ways of running one,” Mathiason said about opening MANE. “I wanted to create an entirely different experience, focusing a lot more on the guests instead of just how many clients we can get in within a day. Idaho needed something different, and a salon that was niched in this service.”

TAKING ON THE FAMILY JEWELRY LEGACY
the next, is where we meet Perry, Allie’s father, who started in the industry in the 1970s.
Allie has a double bachelor’s in Fashion Merchandising and Business, along with a foundation in diamonds from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). But her initial introduction to the jewelry world came from her father. Under her father’s wing she learned to appreciate the craft behind individual pieces, and has been apprenticing for 10 years. This combination of hands-on training and formal skills development inspired her to take over the family business.
Allie has always loved jewelry.
Her parents recall her emerging from her bedroom dressed in as much costume jewelry as she could find when she was a kid. This early passion proved a boon as Allie took on the family jewelry legacy, making her the fifth generation to do so.
Now after three years of planning and construction, Allie and her family have opened a new showroom in Meridian: Copper Canary Fine Jewelry Boutique.
“It’s been a long journey to open this showroom, but we’re proud to call the Treasure Valley home and bring Copper Canary to the community,” Allie said.
A FAMILY LEGACY
While Copper Canary is new to Meridian, Allie and her family are not new to the jewelry market.
The family business originated in Chicago in 1885 with Allie’s great-great-grandfather, Isaac, who offered services as a neighborhood jeweler. Through generations, with the knowledge and business passed down from one generation to
Her son is already showing an interest in gems and jewelry as well. According to Allie, Nash, 5, is on his way to becoming a sixth-generation jeweler.
“He was a great baby to have in the shop... wrapped around me napping while I helped our customers,” she said. “He is continuing his jewelry training with his ‘Papa’ [Perry], learning to use the microscope and jeweler’s loupe. [He’s] excellent at sorting gemstones by shades of color. In a few years, he will attend GIA’s GemKids camp.”
ANTIQUE ELEGANCE MEETS MODERN INFLUENCE
Copper Canary’s collections primarily consist of custom designs and antique pieces (which the family sources from across the United States and Europe). They also offer jewelry repair for modern and vintage pieces.
“I have experience working for larger brands and have seen firsthand that a name brand doesn’t always mean that you’re getting top quality,” Allie said. “At Copper Canary, we work with our in-house, veteran goldsmith and European partners to ensure that each piece has

unmatched quality. When we find something that accentuates someone’s style and personal preferences, it is a really special moment.”
Allie often works with clients to craft new pieces from antique jewelry, like turning heirloom lingerie and bar pins into more wearable pieces, such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings.
“Restoring, repairing, and reimagining antique jewelry is an elegant form of upcycling,” she said. “There’s no better way to honor a diamond than to pass it down for generations as a wearable and desired piece. There is an added layer of sentimentality when the piece is passed down from a prior generation and we can reimagine it to fit the style for the new owner.”
As a personal example, Allie mentioned that her own engagement ring uses the diamond that her father gifted to her mother, but is now reset into an original 1920s Art Deco setting.
Allie said she enjoys working with clients to craft custom pieces. One of her favorite projects was a bespoke creation.
“After my client’s mother had passed, she noticed that butterflies landed on her all the time,” she said. “We worked together and custom-designed a necklace with a diamond-studded, solid gold butterfly so she could always keep the memory of her mother close.”

ART DECO INSPIRED BOUTIQUE
Copper Canary’s new Meridian location blends Art Deco design with modern touches.
“As we had the opportunity to create the space from the bare bones of the building, I knew we wanted to design the showroom in a thoughtful way that would complement the jewelry inside,” Allie said. “[We] took great care to make sure that all elements within the building are elegant, eye-catching, and welcoming. There are a lot of decades that influenced the layout and design, and I think you can really feel that as you walk around the showroom.”
The store has a centerpiece bridal bar dedicated to engagement pieces. On display are collections of pieces spanning 250 years of jewelry eras, such as Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. Also featured is a custom locket bar, one of Allie’s favorite services, where customers can choose from an array of colorful gemstones to create a unique piece.
Among the antique and reimagined pieces, Copper Canary also carries accessories like handbags, wallets, and hats. The designs come from partners that ethically source their materials.
Visitors can also take advantage of the coffee bar and refreshments as they explore what Coppery Canary has to offer.
To find out more about Copper Canary Fine Jewelry Boutique and the unique specialities that the family store offers, you can visit CopperCanaryBoutique.com , or visit the new location at 2590 N. Eagle Road, Meridian.

The simplicity and nostalgia of vintage clothing, furniture, and decor
Whether you’re inspired by the past or looking to protect our future, vintage style has been permeating our culture for generations. The simplicity and nostalgia of vintage clothing, furniture, and decor cultivates a story with every purchase and every unique find.
An iconic Treasure Valley staple, Ward Hooper’s unique vintage style inspires memories of simpler times. His art can be seen all over Idaho, from the slopes of Sun Valley to the University of Idaho and everywhere in between.
“Growing up in a modestly poorer community I only remember having access to children’s story books and picture books that were hand-me-downs from the ‘30s through the ‘50s, so those illustrations and art styles really stuck with me,” Ward shared when asked where he drew his graphic inspiration.
Ward’s point of reference for all of his work is to portray the subject as if he were seeing it for the first time

“I think as the world gets more computer-driven, people long for the simpler times and styles and fashions.”
An Idaho native, Ward spent his teen years in the backcountry of Grangeville, hunting, hiking, and fishing. And of course, creating art! “I also love to hunt flea markets and thrift stores for items to use in some of my two- and three-dimensional art pieces.”
He also hosts a vintage market right outside his shop, located at 745 Idaho Street in downtown Boise. “I started doing a vintage market out front on the sidewalk about 6 years ago to help out some of the kids that were starting up their own ‘side hustle.’ It is great seeing these kids get excited about making money doing something completely on their own. Since then, a lot of them have opened their own stores and flourished. It’s good to see.”

SWEET TEA LIVING
Sweet Tea Living
“It all started when I was a little girl,” Megan began. Owner and founder of Sweet Tea Living in Eagle, Megan Hoiosen has always found herself drawn to the world of vintage design. “My dad built a doll house as tall as me and I would spend hours decorating each room. As the years passed, I started decorating my own room and drawing up plans for new ideas.” And the rest was history.

Megan opened Sweet Tea Living, located at 99 W State Street, as a space to create and sell products using a combination of both novel and vintage items. “We love the balance of vintage mixed with new. This helps make every home feel different and unique. I go out searching each week for antiques to add to the shop!”
Sweet Tea Living is all about finding the story behind the item and in turn, adding all the richness and character that antique goods offer. She prides herself in not only cultivating creative products but also in building and maintaining relationships with her customers. “My main goal for Sweet Tea Living is that it is a safe and welcoming space where anyone can come in and enjoy a few moments away from the craziness of life.”
What sets Megan’s shop apart from other antique and vintage stores is that she tears the entire showroom down every three to four months and does a complete reset with a brand-new theme. Sweet Tea Living is quite literally a different store each time you visit.

ANTIQUE WORLD MALL
Weighing in at a staggering 30,000 square feet of floor to ceiling vintage goods is the Antique World Mall (AWM). Since 1999, AWM has been consigning with more than 150 different dealers, resulting in thousands upon thousands (maybe millions) of items of varying prices. From midcentury modern to circa 1932 London style, AWM has literally everything, and I mean everything.
“Victorian, Mid Century Modern, Primitive, Farmhouse, or Hollywood Regency styles and more can all be found at Antique World Mall,” shared Kristina Murray, Marketing Director for AWM. “We have everything from an 1800s French Church Altar to an 1890 Corbin Cabinet US Postal Office window. I believe our store truly has something for everyone.”
You could spend hours—probably days—and still not see everything. Every nook, every corner is filled to the brim with vintage, retro, and antique goods. Find a relic from your past or dive deeper into history. Adorn yourself with vintage jewelry, add to your record collection, step into your grandpa’s garage, and step out into to a ‘50s diner.
“When you shop at Antique World Mall, not only are you supporting a local shop, but you are supporting 150+ small businesses with our dealers,” Kristina continued. Talk about shopping local! “When you walk through the doors of the Antique World Mall you will feel a sense of family. Many of our dealers have operated booths at the Mall since the beginning, and numerous of our employees have been working with us since the early days.”
For more information about the Antique World Mall, check out their shop at 4544 W. Overland Road or visit them online or on social media AntiqueWorldMall.com .

different spin with different networks of people in the industry.” The Board of Directors makes up 15 individuals from various industries who have graciously and passionately come together to support fashion in a way that benefits the community.
Growing up with a mother who was a seamstress, Becker was surrounded by the behind-the-scenes world of fashion from a young age. After attending university as a designer and working in the industry, Becker moved to Boise at a time when “it was not a place for fashion.” This was seven years ago, when the city looked and felt very different than it does today.
It became apparent this was an underserved market, which is where the passion for Boise Fashion Week ultimately came from. For the past year, Becker has been working with Boise school districts, universities, the state of Idaho and nonprofits to lobby for sewing classes to be brought back into education, also starting networking groups where students can learn from one another.
“Instead of hosting just one event,” Becker states of Boise Fashion Week, “it’s about talking about the different aspects of
the industry and really being a part of the fashion community. People didn’t have those resources even just a few years ago, so we have created a platform where people can network, connect, and truly grow the industry,” she explained.
As for the main event, which is happening sometime in October, Becker hopes to bring something totally different to the table than the typical avant-garde and special occasion Fashion Weeks you see from LA, New York, and Miami. “There’s nothing that really focuses on Outdoor Fashion,” she says. “This is a growing opportunity and natural progression to showcase the Outdoor Fashion designers whose collections embody “outdoor performance” and “upscale outdoor” fashion who focus on the active lifestyle that Boise emulates.
She promises the event will still showcase those high-fashion, special occasion pieces (among other looks) to round out the runway. “I love giving the opportunity to designers to hone their skills and build a following through this showcase,” she concluded. In Defense of the Realm
AS THE IDAHO RENAISSANCE FAIRE APPROACHES, WE EXPLORE BELEGARTH IN IDAHO
In many ways, we are all subject to the unstoppable passing of time. We are born into this world with no control over when or where. But who’s to say that we don’t have some control over how we live. Who’s to say that we can’t decide what time period or even which realm we belong to?
“For the past twelve years of my life, I’ve ingrained myself as a member of the Belegarth Medieval Combat Society (BMCS),” Sir Nickel explained. “I’ve been inducted into orders of Knighthood, received two lifetime achievement awards for service to the realms for my work in recruitment and retention, started my own fighting companies, and overall been involved, or in contact in, every level of organization within the sport.”
Sir Nickel—also known as Nick Re—has always had a particular fondness for medieval times. He enjoyed attending Renaissance Faires throughout his childhood and adolescent life, but the game
“I have learned so much about leadership, community, and just learning how to love people and myself.
I have not only found a passion, I have found a home.”

The Battle of Bywater
Sir Nickel—also known as Nick Re—has always had a particular fondness for medieval times. He enjoyed attending Renaissance Faires throughout his childhood and adolescent life, but the game was forever changed when he found out that people actually did this at a “professional” level.

was forever changed when he found out that people actually did this at a “professional” level. And thus, Sir Nickel was born into the world of Belegarth. Into the Realm of Castle Goldentooth, to be specific.
There are dozens of different kinds of LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) all across the globe. From Steampunk to Magic Schools to Post-Apocalyptic America, there is truly something for every interest group. Nick’s chosen vein, Belegarth, is a global form of LARPing focused primarily on simulated Dark Age medieval combat interwoven with elements of fantasy. Groups are broken into Realms or Chapters and organized opportunities for battle among one another. Realms often have their own symbols and themes and go up against opposing Realms. All for the glory of the Realm. And of course, endless bragging rights.
But more than just donning a symbol and smashing your foes with a painted Styrofoam sword, Belegarth cultivates a sense of community and belonging among its members. For some, it has been life changing in all the best ways.
“Belegarth is the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I have not only found a sport, but I have also found an amazing group of people,” shared Atlas Perry, also in the Realm of Castle Goldentooth. “I have learned so much about leadership, community, and just learning how to love people and myself. I have not only found a passion, I have found a home.”
Beyond large annual events like Chaos Wars at Lake Walcott State Park and the Battle of Bywater in Caldwell, there are weekly gatherings, potlucks, and plenty of opportunities to stay connected with your peers. “It really keeps your social circle full and bustling! It’s a way to push myself to be better,” said Nick. “You know when you finally succeed in something you’ve worked at for a long time? That sense of dopamine and accomplishment? This hobby is a constant drip of that. It definitely keeps you coming back for more!”
The Idaho Renaissance Faire is September 23rd and 24th at Expo Idaho. For more information on upcoming events in the Treasure Valley area and how to get involved in Belegarth, visit Castle Goldentooth on Facebook @GoldentoothLARP.

THE little BLACK DRESS
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be. “We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life.
Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type?
