NON-PROFIT OF THE MONTH
ARTICLE BY HANG LE
The Assistance Center of Collin County, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing comprehensive services that address the immediate and long-term needs of those in crisis. Their mission is to enhance the stability, health, and well-being of the community through compassionate care and resources.
One of the core services offered by the Assistance Center is the utility financial assistance program. This program provides critical aid to those struggling to meet basic needs, such as rent, utilities, and food. By offering this financial support, the center
helps prevent homelessness and ensures that families can maintain a stable living environment during times of crisis.
During the back to school season, an initiative called "Tools 4 School" provides over 900 backpacks each year to students within the Plano Independent School District (PISD) and surrounding schools. This initiative started in 1986 by Resurrection Lutheran, who has now partnered with the Assistance Center and continues to equip our younger generation with the supplies they need to succeed. Supplies are distributed to students either through the Assistance Center or via their PISD elementary, middle, or high school counselors.
Assistance Center of Collin County: Empowering the Community
Further, the Assistance Center provides a range of supportive services designed to empower individuals and families. These include case management, referrals to other social service agencies, and educational programs that promote self-sufficiency. The center's holistic approach ensures that clients receive not only immediate relief but also the tools and resources needed to achieve long-term stability.
How is this possible? The Assistance Center is extremely proud of those organizations, corporations, churches, foundations, and individuals that have joined us in our efforts to stabilize families allowing them the peace of mind to move forward. If you would like to learn more on how to get involved, please visit assistancecenter.org.
In 1977, Plano's population was under 60,000, and Collin County's was just over 121,000. By 2020, Plano reached 285,494 residents, and Collin County soared to 1,064,465, with rapid growth continuing. The Assistance Center faces rising demand and must often turn down hundreds of qualified requests due to limited resources. As inflation costs and rental rates climb, wage earners increasingly struggle to make ends meet.
Expanding their donor base remains crucial to support the growing number of individuals in need and address the significant demand for assistance in our rapidly growing community. Every contribution helps bridge the gap and provides essential support to those facing hardship.

LIFE OF THE PARTY
Transforming Gatherings into Themed Extravaganzas
ARTICLE BY LIANNE BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOVELYN PHOTOGRAPHY
Remember when parties consisted of a simple sheet cake, balloons color-coordinated with the tablecloths, napkins, and if you're lucky, a full matching silverware set? Long gone are those simple days as Pinterest moms continually one-up each other. From dessert tables and attendee activities to take-home gifts, things can get wild. In a world where you can click and order everything online, things should be easier, right? Have you ever thought about a themed party and felt overwhelmed? We've asked expert party planner LiAnne Brown for insight into planning and organizing awe-inspiring themed parties.
LiAnne's meticulous approach starts with research. She delves into current trends and scours reliable vendors to curate a collection of high-quality, single-use, or reusable supplies that perfectly capture the essence of a chosen theme. This dedication extends to costumes, props, and decorations, ensuring a cohesive experience for partygoers. Sustainability is among her values, and whenever possible, she selects materials that can be recycled or reused.
Engagement is key. Once the theme is established, she crafts engaging activities. Whether it's a thrilling murder mystery or an exciting treasure hunt, clear and concise instructions are paramount. The goal is to keep guests active and having fun, avoiding confusion or delays that can dampen the mood.
Once activities are in place, attention turns to the overall aesthetic. Evaluating the party space is crucial. She plans the distribution of decorations and props to create a vibrant atmosphere while ensuring ample space for guests to move freely. Measurements are taken, and a layout is crafted to optimize the space for the chosen theme. Armed with this plan, LiAnne then
sources the perfect finishing touches from her network of trusted vendors. She understands the power of collaboration and has partnered with other local small businesses to elevate her soirées. From mouthwatering charcuterie arrangements to delectable macarons, these partnerships ensure a wellrounded party experience for guests.
How does one devote to a life of party planning? LiAnne has always been the life of the party. Friends and family consistently marveled at her ability to transform an ordinary gathering into a themed extravaganza. Their encouragement, coupled with her own desire to share her passion, led her to create LiLi's Party in a Box, where she takes the stress out of planning and leaves you more time for creating memories. LiAnne's motivation goes beyond the bottom line. She envisions LiLi's Party in a Box as a family legacy and a way to share her passion and bring joy to others. By removing the stress of party planning, she allows her clients to focus on what truly matters—celebrating with loved ones.

Meet Karla Butler FIRST RESPONDER OF THE MONTH:
A JOURNEY FROM ZOOKEEPER TO SENIOR ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER
What little girl doesn’t dream of being a zookeeper?
For Karla Butler, this childhood fantasy was a lifelong inspiration. Growing up in the sun-soaked landscapes of California, Karla's love for animals blossomed early, steering her ambitions towards a career in the animal kingdom. Karla's passion for animals was evident from a young age, shaping her educational and professional goals.
“Karla Butler's story showcases the power of passion and adaptability. Moving from the deserts of California to the busy neighborhoods of Texas, she proves that it's important to chase your dreams, even if they take you in surprising directions.”
Karla's path began with a specialized education from Moorepark College with an emphasis in animal training, zookeeping, and wildlife education. She started her career at the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens in Palm Desert, California, where she gained valuable experience and knowledge. Her skills and dedication led her to a prestigious position at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Eventually, she returned to the Living Desert Zoo, where she went back to work with the giraffes as part of the Wildlife Programs, and she also helped develop the new reptile show.
Life took an unexpected turn when Karla’s husband’s career brought their family to Texas. Embracing this new chapter, Karla took a break from her professional life to raise their children, putting her professional aspirations on hold. During this time, Karla explored a new passion for writing, contributing to a sports blog, and then moving on to write and publish a children's book. Despite these new endeavors, her love for animals remained strong.
Feeling unfulfilled in her professional life, Karla decided it was time to return to her lifelong passion of working with animals. The City of Allen’s animal control department became her new professional home seven and a half years ago. Transitioning from zookeeping to animal control was not something she had anticipated, but it turned out to be a deeply fulfilling role. As a newly promoted Senior Animal Control Officer, Karla finds herself in a position that, while different from her days at the zoo, is equally rewarding.
Karla Butler's story showcases the power of passion and adaptability. Moving from the deserts of California to the busy neighborhoods of Texas, she proves that it's important to chase your dreams, even if they take you in surprising directions.

the Power of EMBRACING STEAM EDUCATION
Preparing Children for a Dynamic Future through STEAM Education
ARTICLE BY KATHY MORENO
STEAM education, which integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, represents an evolution from traditional STEM by including the arts. This addition recognizes the inherent creativity in scientific and technical disciplines and emphasizes the role of art in problem-solving and innovation.
Incorporating the arts into STEAM fosters cognitive development in children. It acknowledges the creative aspects of science and technology, encouraging students to explore and innovate.
Snapology is an innovative learning program that blends play with education. They offer a fun, interactive environment where children can explore STEAM and robotics concepts using LEGO® bricks, K'Nex, and various technologies.
Programs like Snapology, highlight how STEAM education promotes creative thinking by allowing children to engage in hands-on learning and self-guided exploration. This approach nurtures critical problem-solving skills, as children learn through trial and error, enhancing their ability to tackle challenges independently.
STEAM also promotes interdisciplinary learning, which is crucial for overall development. By integrating different subjects, children learn to make connections and apply knowledge in varied contexts. This approach fosters a love of learning, making education an engaging and enjoyable experience. When children find learning fun, they become more open to acquiring new skills and knowledge across all subjects, building a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
Engagement and motivation are key benefits of STEAM education. Programs designed to introduce core concepts in a fun and interactive way, like Snapology, help children develop a positive attitude towards learning. This intrinsic motivation is far more effective than traditional methods that emphasize rote memorization and future utility. By making learning an enjoyable and rewarding experience, STEAM education helps students develop a lifelong love for discovery and exploration.
CONTINUED >
Through STEAM education, children develop a range of skills that are beneficial in the long term. These include critical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, programming, mechanical understanding, communication, and following directions. Such skills are essential in preparing children for future challenges and technological advancements. Moreover, these skills are not only applicable in academic settings but also in real-life situations, making children better equipped to handle various scenarios in their personal and professional lives.
STEAM projects also provide practical applications of concepts, helping children understand and relate to realworld situations. Activities like building robot animals, designing amusement park rides, or creating race-cars, make abstract concepts tangible and exciting.
The emotional and social benefits of STEAM education are significant. Children build self-confidence, improve social skills, and learn to work collaboratively. They also develop the ability to listen and follow directions, which are important life skills. By working on group projects and participating in interactive activities, children learn the value of teamwork and effective communication. These
experiences help them develop empathy, respect for others, and the ability to work well in diverse groups.
Parents play a crucial role in supporting and encouraging STEAM learning at home. Enrolling children in Snapology classes, providing them with Legos and other building toys, and fostering their natural curiosity can significantly enhance their STEAM education experience. Parents can also engage in activities with their children, such as visiting science museums, participating in DIY projects, and encouraging exploration of nature. By actively participating in their child's education, parents can help reinforce the concepts learned in school and inspire a lifelong love of learning.
Overall, STEAM education prepares children for a rapidly changing world by emphasizing creativity, interdisciplinary learning, and practical application of knowledge. It fosters a love of learning, builds essential life skills, and promotes inclusivity and diversity, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
If you're interested in getting your child involved in a fun interactive STEAM program, contact Snapology at 469-215-2031 or visit www.snapology.com/texas-mckinney

LIFE LESSONS, SKILLS, AND LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS THROUGH YOUTH SPORTS
Allen Sports Association (ASA) is a volunteer-based, nonprofit youth sports organization founded in 1976 by Allen citizens. The purpose of the organization is to provide quality sports and recreation for children who reside in the cities of Allen, Lucas, and Fairview. They promote year-round sports programs and provide the organization and leadership necessary to carry on such programs in the best interest and advantage of all participants. Programs are open to players of all levels and experience and there are currently ten sports programs. Over 18,000 participants enrolled annually and over 3,000 volunteers participate at various levels, from coaching to serving on committees.
We spoke with Angela Martinez, Sports Specialist at ASA, about the importance of team sports at a young age. Having been active in sports from a very early age through her college years, Angela is often asked about her favorite aspects of being involved in sports. As a competitor, she always includes the competition component. However, there are three aspects of youth sports that she believes are of the greatest value.
The first are the life lessons learned through sports, such as the value of teamwork, the importance of fundamentals, sportsmanship, overcoming adversity, and the power of perseverance. These lessons extend beyond sports and apply throughout life.
CONTINUED >
Youth sports also help develop valuable skills on and off the field. Kids learn fundamental skills in their respective sports, which they can build upon as they continue. Team sports also allow kids to develop interpersonal skills, learning to work together for success. This skill is crucial in life, as working with different abilities and personalities to achieve a common goal is challenging but essential.
Beyond the lessons and skills gained, the friendships built through being on a team are priceless. This is perhaps the greatest benefit of team sports. The team learns together, celebrates victories, and supports each other in defeat. The camaraderie built through these experiences is hard to describe for those who have not been part of team sports. To this day, Angela's closest friends are her teammates from over 30 years ago, and she cannot imagine not having them as lifelong friends.
There are countless benefits to team sports and engaging kids early. While it is difficult to outline all of them in one article, Angela confidently states that getting kids involved in team sports is an investment that is priceless.
Allen Sports Association aims to provide a solid foundation for kids starting out in their program and build upon that for years to come. To achieve this goal, they are always looking for volunteers. If you would like to volunteer for any of the programs, please visit www.allensports.org to register. Another way that you can get involved is through being part of the annual Play Fore Kids Golf Tournament on September 20th . This is ASA's annual fundraiser which allows them to keep registration costs low for sports programs, as they never want finances to be an obstacle to kids participation with ASA.
A NEW CHAPTER
APL Embarks on Expansion to Meet Growing Needs of the Community
On an unseasonably warm day in February 2005, the first visitors entered the doors of a long-awaited community gem. Necks craned to get a look inside the blue corrugated metal silo, which had been turning heads on Allen Drive for months. Teens in braces and layered tank tops wandered toward a sign spelling “TeenScape” in glowing neon letters. Tiny feet raced across ocean-themed carpet before stopping, in awe, in front of a massive fish tank. Those wide-eyed preschoolers—now old enough to have families of their own—were among the first patrons of Allen Public Library’s landmark location at 300 N. Allen Drive. Allen’s population was just shy of 70,000 people when the library moved to its new location. Given the city’s projected
growth, architects designed the building to be expanded someday as the need developed. That day has now arrived. As of August 1, 2024, Allen Public Library will temporarily close to the public as construction begins on a long-awaited expansion and renovation project. More than 19,000 square feet will be added to the facility, offering new opportunities for library patrons. The Children’s Library will be overhauled with a dedicated learning and play area, and a new Children’s Program Room will accommodate more families for the library’s ever-popular youth programs. Teens will benefit from a revamped space on the second floor to support social interaction and collaboration. All ages will enjoy more space for materials, seating, and program space.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CITY OF ALLEN
From the beginning, the project’s funding and design were driven by the library’s most important stakeholders: Allen residents. Voters approved funding for the expansion during a bond election in May 2016 after the project was identified by residents as one of the community’s top priorities. A citizen steering committee worked closely with architects and city staff to gather resident feedback and make recommendations based on community needs. When Allen City Council awarded the library construction contract to Fransen Pittman Construction at the May 28, 2024 meeting, the crowd gathered inside council chambers erupted in applause.
“We’ve got a new library coming!” Allen Mayor Baine Brooks announced with a grin after the motion passed. “I think it’s a great thing for Allen.”
To minimize disruptions to the library’s popular summer programming, regular library operations continued through July 31st, even as dirt began to turn for some of the exterior spaces.
On August 1, however, the library closed its doors to move to its temporary home: the former Rountree Elementary School campus located at 800 E. Main Street. That location will open in mid- to late-September once materials, technology, and other resources have been relocated.
Fransen Pittman Construction is committed to an aggressive timeline for construction and renovations at the library’s permanent location, aiming for a grand reopening in early summer 2025.
Allen Public Library’s digital collection, including cloudLibrary eBooks and digital audiobooks, NewsStand digital magazines, Comics Plus comics and graphic novels, Biblio+ and Parent TV streaming videos, and Bluebird language learning will remain available while the library is closed. Residents ages 18 and older can apply for a 90-day digital-only card that offers access to the digital library.
Residents can get updates and follow the progress at AllenLibrary.org
Expansion Timeline:
• May 7, 2016 – Allen voters approve bond funding for Allen Public Library expansion
• May 28, 2024 – Allen City Council approves construction contract
• June 22, 2024 – Allen Public Library expansion and renovation project breaks ground
• July 31, 2024 – Last day of regular operations at 300 N. Allen Drive location
• August 1, 2024 – Allen Public Library closes to the public. No materials are due until the library reopens at its temporary location.
• Mid September, 2024 – Allen Public Library opens temporary location at Rountree Elementary School (800 E. Main Street).
• Summer 2025 – Allen Public Library reopens at permanent location following expansion and renovation

DOG
SOCIALIZING
“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”
Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.
• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.
• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.
• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.
• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.
HOW TO THROW A BIRTHDAY BASH FOR YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS:
Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.
• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.
• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.
• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.
• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.

Student of the Month
Allen High School alum Grace Noh, the recipient of the Kiwanis Club’s inaugural Dr. David Olson Scholarship, impressed the Kiwanians with over 1,000 community-service hours. The Kiwanis Club’s volunteerism focuses on “improving the world by impacting children,” inspiring the scholarship that honors Olson’s contributions as an Allen ISD administrator.
In her interview with the Kiwanians, Noh described volunteerism as “a catalyst for change.” “Volunteering allows me,” she said, “to embrace the cycle of love … one person extends a helping hand and inspires others to do the same.”
At AHS, Noh played orchestral violin and spent four years in the Kiwanisaffiliated Key Club and the Red Cross Eagles, leading both groups as president in her senior year. She will now study sociology at Texas A&M University.
