Fall Is in the Air!

There’s been a subtle but noticeable chill in the air as I’ve enjoyed the last few mornings on my back porch with my dog. Considering I am writing this at the end of August, this cool breeze feels like a gift, offering a brief respite before the heat returns and a promise of the fall to come.

October is the perfect time to celebrate two of my favorite things: fall and food! Aiken is truly a haven for food lovers, boasting an impressive array of independently owned restaurants that cater to every palate. It’s remarkable how many culinary treasures we have for a town of our size.

Within these pages, you’ll find two fantastic fall recipes crafted by Chef Marvin Sterling III of Neon Fig and Electric Eats—perfect for bringing the flavors of the season into your home.

We also pay a visit to the Aiken Farmers Market, a local institution celebrating its 70th year. It’s more than just a market; it’s a gathering place for local farmers and a launchpad for budding entrepreneurs. There’s something special about supporting our community while enjoying fresh, locally sourced produce.

Our Publication Director, Nikita Hanif, joined forces with Evergreen Dreams Floral Studio and La Vita Bella to create a stunning Harvest Nights tablescape. We gathered with friends at Golden Hour under the majestic oaks at Great Oak Equine Assisted Programs, and the results, captured by the talented Rebecca Judy, are breathtaking. It’s a privilege to collaborate with such creative and dedicated individuals.

In the spirit of collaboration, Downtown Dog and La Parisienne French Restaurant have teamed up to create a special menu just for our four-legged friends, adding a delightful twist to dining out.

And, of course, we can’t forget dessert—my absolute favorite! While I didn’t indulge in Salty Tomatoes’ fall offerings this time around (thanks to my diet), they look marvelous and are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

As we look ahead to the holidays, let’s take a moment to savor this transitional season. Enjoy the cooler weather and treat yourself to a meal outdoors at one of Aiken’s many fine dining establishments. There’s no better way to embrace the beauty of fall than with good food, great company and the crisp autumn air.

See you next month!

WHISKEY WARMTH

MARK TAYLOR INSURANCE ENJOYS A FALL FEAST AT WHISKEY ALLEY
Chad Jajczyk, Owner and Executive Chef, and Katie Jajczyk, Executive Chef

Kim Brinson, a dedicated and experienced licensed health and life insurance agent, has significantly impacted the lives of her clients through her commitment to finding the best insurance solutions tailored to their needs. Recently, Kim and her team took a well-deserved break from their busy schedules to enjoy an evening at Whiskey Alley, one of Aiken’s favorite local spots. The night perfectly blended relaxation and indulgence with a savory, chef-selected menu with a delightful charcuterie spread featuring cured meats, pâté, assorted cheeses, pickles and crostini. They also enjoyed crispy brussel sprouts, chargrilled vegan BBQ carrots, and handcrafted beverages that perfectly complemented the autumn season.

Kim’s journey into the insurance industry began shortly after she graduated from college. From the start, she was drawn to the idea of helping people secure their future

by selecting the right plans. Over the years, she has built a reputation for her thorough understanding of the complex world of health and life insurance. Kim’s agency, Mark Taylor Insurance, is known for its deeply personalized approach, recognizing that each individual or employer group has unique needs. This philosophy drives her and her team to work diligently to find the most suitable plans for their clients.

One of the common misconceptions Kim encounters is the belief that young and healthy individuals don’t need insurance. She emphasizes the unpredictability of life, where accidents and illnesses can occur without warning. This is why her agency, Mark Taylor Insurance, offers a wide range of policies and price points, from ACA individual coverage and Medicare plans to employer benefits. In addition, they provide essential services like dental, long-term disability, short-term disability and life insurance, ensuring that their clients are well-covered in any situation.

The insurance industry has seen significant changes over the last two decades, with technology playing a crucial role in streamlining processes. Clients can now apply for policies online, e-sign documents and access their policies, ID cards and benefits easily while claims can be tracked more swiftly. Insurance companies have also focused on preventative measures such as weight loss, smoking cessation, mental health visits and virtual consultations.

To stay current with industry trends and regulations, Kim and her team are active members of the National Association of Benefit Insurance Professionals (NABIP). This membership ensures they are well-informed about the latest laws and regulations at both the state and national levels. Through regular Zoom meetings, webinars and required licensing and training, Kim and her team maintain their expertise, ensuring they continue providing top-notch service to their clients.

A TIMELESS COMMUNITY HUB CELEBRATES 70 YEARS

AIKEN FARMERS MARKET

Right in the middle of Williamsburg Street Northeast in Aiken, South Carolina, the Aiken Farmers Market is a cherished institution that has stood the test of time. Recently celebrating

AS THE OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING FARMERS MARKET IN SOUTH CAROLINA, ITS LEGACY IS AS DEEP AND RICH AS THE SOIL THAT NOURISHES THE CROPS SOLD THERE.

its 70th anniversary on September 28th, this market is not just a place to buy fresh produce; it's a vibrant community hub where stories are shared, traditions are upheld, and new ventures are born. As the oldest continuously operating farmers market in South Carolina, its legacy is as deep and rich as the soil that nourishes the crops sold there.

Eric Gordon, Aiken’s Tourism Manager, is proud of the market's role in the community. “The market is a haven for farmers,” he says, noting that approximately 70% of the vendors are area farmers. This strong representation of local agriculture ensures that customers get the freshest produce available and supports the livelihoods of those who work the land in and around Aiken.

The market is more than just fruits and vegetables. Over the years, it has evolved

a home at the market, selling handmade goods that add a unique, artisanal touch to locals’ shopping experience.

Gordon is particularly enthusiastic about how the Aiken Farmers Market has served as a springboard for local entrepreneurs. He refers to it as an “entrepreneurial incubator,” where small businesses can test their products, build a customer base and eventually expand. A shining example of this is Iron Gate Candles. Initially a small vendor at the market, the business did so well that it grew into its own brick-and-mortar store. James and Jamie, owners of Iron Gate Candles, said, “We were at the farmers market in 2017 and were there for three years. We loved getting to know all the vendors and patrons. We know that the Aiken Farmers Market made it possible for us to grow our business, and for that, we are very thankful.”

The Aiken Farmers Market has evolved into a place where lasting connections are made. Vendors form relationships with each other, sharing tips and experiences. Customers get to know the vendors personally and learn about their farms, the sustainability of their products, and the health benefits of buying locally.

One of the most delightful aspects of the market is its lively, open-air atmosphere. Families stroll through the rows of tables with children in tow, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of fresh produce and baked goods. A sense of joy and camaraderie permeates the air, making a trip to the market a cherished weekly tradition for many.

Locals have nothing but praise for the market. When asked about their favorite vendors, the responses were enthusiastic. For example, the pierogis from South Pole are a fan favorite with their rich flavors and comforting texture drawing rave reviews. Miss Hollie Gartman’s fresh vegetables are another highlight with customers appreciating both the quality of her produce and her warm, friendly demeanor. And, of course, no trip to the market would be complete without sampling the decadent Schnecken from The Great Aiken Baking Company or the magnificent macarons from MacDaddy’s —treats that have become staples for many market-goers.

The Aiken Farmers Market is also a place of purpose for many vendors, especially those who are retired. For these individuals, the market offers a way to stay connected to the community, meet new

LIVES OF OTHERS.

people and give back in meaningful ways. It’s not just about making a sale; it’s about being a part of something larger, something that enriches the lives of others.

Looking ahead, Gordon is excited about the future of the Aiken Farmers Market. Plans are to continue expanding the offerings, bringing in vendors representing a more comprehensive array of cultures and culinary traditions. The market is also committed to ensuring its goods are accessible to all community members, accepting SNAP, EBT and Senior and WIC vouchers.

What makes the Aiken Farmers Market truly special is the way it embodies the spirit of Aiken itself. The support that vendors receive from the community goes right back into the town—whether through supporting local farms, small businesses or even community programs. As the market continues to evolve and grow, it will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of Aiken’s community life, where the past, present and future come together to celebrate local culture, entrepreneurship and connection.

The sun dips low on the horizon, casting golden hues across the sprawling fields of Great Oak Equine Assisted Programs and a scene of timeless beauty unfolds beneath the sheltering and palatial branches of a majestic oak tree. The tree, with its sprawling limbs and deep-rooted history, stands as a silent witness to an evening filled with laughter, love and the simple joys of togetherness.

At the heart of this gathering is a rustic farmhouse table, meticulously set with the finest elements of autumn. The table is adorned with rich floral displays crafted by the talented hands at Evergreen Dreams Floral Studio. The arrangements of the flowers are a celebration of fall's warm tones— burnt oranges, deep reds and golden yellows interspersed with the soft green foliage of eucalyptus, salal and agonis. These floral masterpieces, both decadent and natural, perfectly capture the essence of the season.

Amidst this sea of autumnal splendor, the table is laden with the season's bounty. Delectable charcuterie and a stunning cake,

created by La Vita Bella, takes center stage. The cake, an edible work of art, is a two-tiered marvel covered with lightly dusted frosting and draped in cascading florals, each detail meticulously crafted to echo the beauty of the world outside. The cake is more than just a dessert; it’s a centerpiece that draws the eye and captures the imagination of every guest, especially the children.

Around the table, friends and their children gather, their faces alight with smiles that speak of contentment and joy. The adults sip on organic cider from Cork and Cap, a local favorite known for its crisp, refreshing flavor—a perfect match for the cool, autumn evening. The cider's gentle warmth compliments the setting sun, both soothing and invigorating in their own way.

As conversations flow and laughter fills the air, the children find their own delights in the evening. Little hands, quick and mischievous, sneak swipes of icing from the cake when they think no one is looking, their giggles add a playful note to the festivities.

This evening under the oak tree is more than just a meal; it is a celebration of the season and the simple pleasures that come with it. The fall season has a way of reminding us to slow down, to savor delicious food and to cherish the time we spend with loved ones. At Great Oak, this harvest night is a perfect reflection of that truth—a night where every moment is to be savored and every memory cherished.
