Turning a House into a Home

ARTICLE BY NIKITA HANIF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEGHANN PADGETT PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM
A Major Transformation by Paul and Molly Hunt to Create the Perfect Family Centric Haven

In November of 2023 Paul and Molly Hunt embarked on an ambitious journey to transform their newly purchased home in Woodside into a welcoming haven for family and friends. The home, while blessed with a remarkable layout and breathtaking views, presented significant challenges. It was closed off, painted in dark, outdated colors and in desperate need of modernization. Yet, the Hunts saw its incredible potential and were inspired to turn it into the family-oriented space they had always dreamed of.

The Hunts chose this home for its spacious footprint and the abundance of natural light pouring through large windows and showcasing scenic views in every room. Their vision revolved around creating a space that could comfortably accommodate their growing family, including their children, spouses and grandchildren, 15 people in total.

The key to their remodel was a spacious and accessible kitchen. “Cooking together is a cornerstone of our family time,” Molly shared. The kitchen now serves as the heart of their home where family members gather to prepare meals, share stories and enjoy each other’s company.

Molly, who loves to host, designed the home to be equally welcoming to guests. Whether it’s a baby shower, wedding shower or church home group, the house has become a hub for celebrations and community. “I wanted every corner of our home to feel like a warm embrace,” Molly said, explaining her thoughtful approach to design and functionality.

Every room in the house was designed with purpose. Molly ensured that cozy, inviting details were prioritized, filling baskets in every room with blankets perfect for snuggling. A fully stocked coffee and tea bar stands ready for visitors, offering them a comforting beverage as they settle into the home’s relaxing atmosphere.

“Molly wanted our home to be a place of comfort and joy,” Paul said, “and she has truly brought

that

vision to life.”

The grandkids particularly love spending time in their grandparents’ remodeled home. Bubble baths in the master bathroom’s luxurious tub have become a favorite pastime, as have board games and playful gatherings on the enclosed porch. Outdoor fun is another highlight with the family frequently gathering around the large fire pit for evenings filled with laughter, cornhole and s’mores.

Molly’s vision for the home was to make it light, airy and inviting. She opted for a color palette of whites, soft blues and a serene shade of green known as Evergreen Fog. The home’s gold and white light fixtures, coupled with charming blue accents, add elegance without sacrificing warmth. Fresh flowers are always present, bringing life and vibrancy to each room of the home.

The focus on family also extends to the downstairs living space which features Paul’s office, a home gym and a theater room. These spaces offer additional opportunities for quality time, whether enjoying a movie night, working out together or needing a studious workspace.

The Hunts home is more than just a beautifully remodeled house; it is a labor of love showcasing their commitment to family, friends and their community. By creating spaces that encourage connection, relaxation and celebration, the Hunts have ensured their home will be a cherished gathering place filled with warm memories for years to come.

“Molly wanted our home to be a place of comfort and joy,” Paul said, “and she has truly brought that vision to life.”

HYGGE HOMES: COMFORT IN REAL ESTATE

Anne Marie McFall is Blending Coziness and Expert Advice for Aiken Homeowners and Buyers

Anne Marie McFall has been a trusted realtor in Aiken’s real estate market for many years, building a career rooted in connection, comfort and trust. Her love for Aiken began as a child when her mother moved the family from Denmark to our charming Southern town. Aiken’s tight-knit community and serene surroundings resonated deeply with McFall and her mother, blending perfectly with their Danish heritage. That heritage inspired the name of her business: Hygge Homes Team with United Real Estate. Pronounced “hoogah,” the Danish word “hygge” refers to a quality of coziness and comfort that evokes feelings of contentment and well-being. “Hygge” is a defining characteristic of

Danish culture, and McFall has worked hard to embody it in her work as a realtor. Whether helping first-time buyers find their dream home or assisting longtime residents in selling a beloved property, she strives to create an experience that feels both stress-free and personal.

“Homes aren’t just places to live; they’re spaces where memories are made,” McFall says. “That’s why I bring a sense of ‘hygge’ into every transaction, ensuring clients feel supported and at ease through every step of the process.”

As spring approaches, homeowners looking to sell can take actionable steps to get their property market-ready. McFall shares her top five recommendations on preparing your home for market:

1. Enhance your curb appeal. First impressions matter, and spring is the perfect time to showcase your home’s exterior. Trim shrubs, plant vibrant flowers and give your front door a fresh coat of paint. A clean, welcoming entrance sets the tone for potential buyers.

2. Declutter and depersonalize. Buyers need to envision themselves living in your home, so remove personal items like family photos, and clear out excess clutter. Simplify spaces to create a blank canvas.

3. Performing a deep spring cleaning takes on new importance when preparing to sell. Steam carpets, polish hardwood floors and ensure windows sparkle to make your home feel fresh and inviting.

4. Make necessary repairs and address minor issues like leaky faucets or chipped paint. Small repairs can make a big difference in how buyers perceive your home’s upkeep.

5. Brighten your space and highlight your natural lighting because it is a major selling point. Clean blinds, open curtains and use light, neutral paint colors to create an airy, welcoming environment.

McFall’s commitment to “hygge” makes her an exceptional choice for anyone looking to buy or sell a home. Whether you’re searching for your dream home or preparing to move on to your next adventure, McFall and the Hygge Homes Team are here to help you every step of the way.

“HOMES AREN’T JUST PLACES TO LIVE; THEY’RE

SPACES WHERE MEMORIES ARE MADE,”

MCFALL

SAYS. “THAT’S WHY I BRING A SENSE OF ‘HYGGE’ INTO EVERY TRANSACTION, ENSURING CLIENTS FEEL SUPPORTED AND AT EASE THROUGH EVERY STEP OF THE PROCESS.”

Rite Price Roofing

A Local Business Mixing Excellent Service with Family Values

Rite Price Roofing does more than offer great prices. Owner Bobby Robinson, along with his wife, Kaylee, ensure their customers receive expert knowledge, skilled workmanship and one-on-one customer service from the beginning of the process to the end. Robinson, an Aiken native, began learning construction skills while working for his brother-in-law, David Hopkins of Dogwood Construction. With guidance from Hopkins, he developed Rite Price Roofing in 2021.

Though the company is relatively new, the Robinsons “know how to hustle and have big goals and dreams for the company.” It’s clear to them that being small business owners really creates a mindset of working as hard as possible in order to make a living and be successful. This belief and an amazing work ethic helped get them through the last few months after Hurricane Helene caused so much destruction throughout Aiken. Robinson felt that the company was really tested with the volume of calls coming in and jobs going on. But they pushed harder, adapted and served the community. “We were so happy to have been able to help Aiken homeowners with all of their roofing needs during this chaotic season after the hurricane.”

With no in-house employees other than the roof installation workers, there is no middleman for customers to deal with. Robinson handles all of the inspections, scheduling and communication with the crew, while his wife handles all of the billing and communication with companies and customers. That may mean long days and nights for the Robinsons, but it also means they run their business with family values of trust, integrity and commitment implemented into every project they take on.

Rite Price Roofing’s main scope of work is roof installation but they also offer siding and gutter services and specialize in architectural shingles and metal roofing. Robinson says that they have a love for metal roofing, as many other companies don’t offer it.

When starting the process with Rite Price, customers can reach out with a phone call or by submitting a form through the website. Once information is gathered, the inspection is scheduled and carried out. Then, an estimate will be sent. Customers can then contact Rite Price about colors, payment and a start date. Robinson always completes home assessments after finishing the job to ensure everything is done well. The process for any service from Rite Price Roofing is guaranteed to be stress-free. As Robinson states, “The only stress our

customers should have to go through is picking what color they want on their roof; everything else should be a breeze.”

It is a family-centered business at Rite Price, and that comes through to customers who get to meet the Robinsons' almosttwo-year-old son, Cohen, out on jobs with dad or step over his trucks and toys scattered around the office. The endearing chaos creates a friendly, welcoming environment, reminding customers that the Robinson’s family values spill over into their business. And as they plan big goals for the growth of Rite Price, their family is also growing and ready to become a party of four with a new arrival in April, a daughter named Sutton. At Rite Price, it’s real life mixed into a typical day on the job, and the Robinsons wouldn't have it any other way.

The Aiken Steeplechase

A TIMELESS TRADITION OF ELEGANCE AND

EXCITEMENT

ARTICLE BY NIKITA/GAYLE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GAYLE BRYAN AND PROVIDED

The Aiken Steeplechase is a cherished tradition that has captivated locals and visitors alike for decades. Hosting two thrilling horse races each year, one in the spring and one in the fall, this event brings the community together in a celebration of fashion, food and equestrian excellence.

Since its founding in 1930 by a group of influential horsemen, the Steeplechase has been a cornerstone of Aiken’s rich equestrian history. The inaugural race was run through the picturesque trails of Hitchcock Woods following the Aiken Hounds’ drag lines. While the location has since changed, the spirit of the event remains the same, an ode to Aiken’s deep connection with horses.

One of the hallmarks of the Steeplechase is its undeniable sense of style. For ladies, the event is an opportunity to don their finest attire, complete with elegant jewelry and fashionable hats—some purchased, others meticulously handcrafted. Men embrace the

tradition with bold, colorful pants, adding a vibrant touch to the festivities. These sartorial choices are celebrated with contests for the best hat and most interesting pair of pants, adding a playful competition to the day.

Tailgating at the Steeplechase is nothing short of an art form. Elaborate setups featuring fine linens, china and gourmet spreads line the grounds, offering a feast for the eyes and the palate. Mint juleps flow freely as friends and families gather to enjoy the lively atmosphere. Children delight in stick horse races, a beloved activity that introduces the next generation to the joys of the Steeplechase, while adults engage in lighthearted $1 bets on the races, adding an extra layer of excitement.

The Steeplechase isn’t just about racing; it’s a social event that reflects Aiken’s warm hospitality and love of tradition. Generations of families have gathered on these grounds to

create memories, strengthening bonds and deepening ties to the community. From the thrill of the horses thundering down the track to the laughter of friends and neighbors, every element of the day reflects the vibrant spirit of Aiken.

At its core, the Aiken Steeplechase is more than just a day of races—it’s a celebration of community, tradition and the bond between Aiken and its equestrian roots. Horses and Aiken have long been synonymous, and the Steeplechase serves as a vivid reminder of that connection. Whether you’re there to cheer on the horses, admire the fashions or indulge in the festive tailgating culture, the Aiken Steeplechase offers something for everyone. It’s a tradition that continues to hold a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike, ensuring that Aiken’s equestrian heritage thrives for generations to come.

HOMESMILES OF AIKEN

SIMPLIFYING HOME MAINTENANCE WITH PROACTIVE CARE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA

After 24 years of service as an Army engineer officer, Andy Olsen retired and settled in Aiken, SC, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a passion for problem solving. His military career, which included moving his family over 15 times all over the US and Europe, gave him unique insight into the challenges of home maintenance. Recognizing a widespread lack of

regular upkeep in both rented and owned homes, Olsen saw an opportunity to fill an important gap. That realization led him to purchase a HomeSmiles franchise and establish the business.

Olsen’s firsthand experiences as a homeowner and renter revealed a common problem: basic home maintenance was often neglected, leading to costly repairs that could have been avoided with routine care. Homeowners either lacked the time, knowledge or ability to handle these tasks. HomeSmiles addresses this issue by providing customized maintenance packages tailored to each home’s specific needs.

HomeSmiles offers a comprehensive range of services, including HVAC maintenance, gutter cleaning, roof inspections, appliance care, sealing gaps and cracks in windows and doors and testing critical safety devices. These tasks, though seemingly mundane, are essential for maintaining energy efficiency, extending the lifespan of appliances, ensuring home safety and preserving property value. Olsen takes a proactive approach, giving homeowners peace of mind by handling these routine yet crucial tasks.

One of the hallmarks of HomeSmiles is its commitment to delivering exceptional service. As a veteran, Olsen brings the discipline, precision and dedication he honed during his military career into every aspect of his business. Clients can trust that their homes are in capable hands and small issues are addressed before they become major problems. This proactive care not only saves time and money but also adds value to their homes over time.

Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.

According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.

“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner.

INNOVATION MEETS

design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.

“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”

Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.

“Forget the limits of traditional cabinetry. Blind corners, tiny nooks and hidden areas are now designed to maximize storage.

ARTISTRY

I also firmly believe that when designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to make sure everything is in the right place to suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”

Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.

Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious ideas with practical implementation to achieve the best results.

Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen

Automated drawers and pop-up outlets are becoming increasingly common, marrying convenience with sleek aesthetics.”

Design trends have also evolved, becoming more flexible to reflect individual tastes.

“While white kitchens remain timeless and black adds drama, bleached woods continue to be popular. Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”

The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.
