EAT OUT TO HELP OUT

There is a sign in my local hairdresser that reads:

Y

Call me non-essential one more time…….

ou have to smile, but underneath the humour there is a subtle message. No matter what the nature of the business, be it a one-man or one-woman show or part of a larger chain, each and every business is essential. Each shop, café, restaurant, hairdresser – you name it – is a vital part of the overall jigsaw puzzle we call the economy. Shut their doors and it has a domino effect on everyone and this has been seen in the closing of many varied businesses across the entire country. To counteract this, measures have been put in place to enable businesses to get their wheels turning again and to pump essential life-blood into the economy. We are social animals and we need to get out and about, to meet family and friends, to interact with each other otherwise we run the risk of becoming totally isolated and afraid, almost to the point of paranoia. One such measure is the Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme, which is running every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at participating venues. It will run for the entire month of August and is designed to encourage people to do what used to come naturally to them – go out for a meal. Not only will it help the restaurants and their staff but, going backwards down the line, will mean that suppliers will benefit as well. A win-win situation. There are many food establishments participating in this scheme and you can check out the ones near you by visiting the www. tax.service.gov.uk/eat-out-to-help-out/find-a2 restaurant.

EAT OUT TO HELP OUT Bijou in Elgin and Bijou at the Sea are delighted to now be open again and have all necessary measures in place to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe visit. I am sure you will agree they have done a fantastic job. This also is the case at Boogie Woogie in Keith. Annie and Ryan have transformed Boogie Woogie during lockdown, this all at the same time as delivering thousands of afternoon teas and takeaways.

BIJOU - ELGIN

Now they are open I am sure you will love the new look Boogie Woogie.

The Royal Hotel in Elgin has the perfect layout to allow for social distancing Allan and his team have a number of measures in place to ensure you have an enjoyable experience. In Craigellachie you’ll be made very welcome at the Highlander Inn by Tatsuya and his team. The Station Hotel in Rothes has all the measures in place but has also announced an exciting addition. You can now book a table in their fabulous new outdoor seating area. In Lossiemouth you can choose between the Salt Cellar, Guidi’s or Smugglers. Which one is your favourite? They are all ready to welcome you. The Galley in Whitehills is definitely well worth a visit. They are offering a limited menu at the moment but it changes weekly and there is more than enough to choose from.

The Mill House Hotel was kept extremely busy with their takeouts and deliveries, including their speciality cocktails, throughout lockdown. They will continue these popular deliveries but you can now choose to go back and enjoy

Please go along to one or more of these wonderful establishments before the end of August and enjoy but remember they need you to return for the weeks and months after the scheme has ended. Whilst it is fine to rub your hands with glee and say “whoopee, we’ll eat out courtesy of the Government”, let’s not forget that – just as a pet is not just for Christmas – all these businesses need to keep the footfall going and their doors open. THANK YOU FROM LIFESTYLE

W

e have all had our challenges to deal with through Covid. Many businesses were forced to close their doors for months, I certainly hope there are not too many that have to make this permanent. Many have adapted and changed the way they had to deliver their service. Hotels and restaurants provided takeaway and deliveries became a regular feature for many. Many of us had to rely on the internet for our communication, I for one had never heard of Zoom before lockdown but it very quickly became a part of my daily schedule. Lockdown has brought out the best in many of our communities. I hope that the community spirit that came to the fore continues way beyond lockdown. There have been a number of businesses collaborating and helping each other out and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the businesses who have helped Lifestyle during lockdown. We were determined to keep Lifestyle going throughout lockdown to provide a service to the business community and not to deny our loyal readers their copy of Lifestyle that I know they look forward to. There wasn’t much to look forward to through lockdown and this was just our way of offering a little bit of light relief. With many of the regular distribution points closed, we had to re think our delivery strategy. In April the first issue was distributed to the supermarkets and newsagents that had remained open. We then called on the volunteers across Moray who were delivering care packages to hundreds of people isolated in their homes. Each care package had a magazine included. Moray Food Plus very kindly assisted with this process delivering the boxes of magazines to each volunteer hub with their weekly food delivery. What a fantastic job Moray Food Plus has done, along with all the volunteers from each community, delivering meals and care packages throughout lockdown. David Robertson of Pozzis in Buckie kindly agreed to deliver the magazines with his newspapers across Buckie and the surrounding areas. I would like to say a massive thank you to David and all his paper loons. Jane and Alan at the Sewing Shop Fochabers also very 6 kindly offered to assist with distribution.

Alan took magazines and delivered them along with parcels, thank you. In July Lifestyle returned to more shops as they reopened. Pozzis once again stepped up as did the Sewing Shop in Fochabers. I was also grateful to Alastair at Bishopmill Pharmacy and Kevin at Rothes Pharmacy who kindly delivered magazines with the prescriptions they regularly deliver around the communities. The service pharmacies provide is vital to our local communities and we all owe them our gratitude. I am certainly grateful to them for their help. The Mill House delivered meals and many of their speciality cocktails. Thank you to Steven for including copies of Lifestyle. Last but by no means least, my thanks to Annie and Ryan at Boogie Woogie in Keith. During lockdown Annie became famous for her afternoon teas and delivered over 2000 during lockdown. Ryan delivered Lifestyles during July along with their deliveries. Boogie Woogie has had a makeover and has now reopened, you really must visit. I hope we all keep helping each other it’s the only way we can survive.

Clearly this year is going to be different because of Covid-19 but with the right measures in place there will be an event. The big difference this year is that there is no printed book– this is because the decision happened during lockdown, when there were still so many uncertainties that it was decided to forgo printing it for this year. So, sadly no physical yellow book, but there is a printed map that normally is inserted into the book. These will be available from NEOS members and you can discover who they are by visiting the NEOS website www.northeastopenstudios.co.uk

Established in 2017, The Portsoy Gift Box is a friendly, family run, independent shop which sells cards, gifts and artwork by Scotland-based makers, artists and designers. We currently stock work from just under 100 makers, approximately 60 of whom are based within a 50 mile radius to the shop. Our wonderful customers have voted us into the Finals of the Independent Retail Awards in 2019 and 2020 and we are also finalists in the Aberdeen Business Awards 2020. We hope you love our gift shop as much as we do and we look forward to welcoming you!

He has started to use Cone 6 glazes and is working with clay marks to create exciting results in his pieces. They have for 20 years created joint ceramics and will continue to do so – usually Brian throwing and using Fiona’s glazes to finish the piece, but who know what will happen this year! They are both looking forward to seeing you for NEOS, and also welcome visitors all year round, opening Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm at 4 Chapel Street, Whitehills, Banff AB45 2NB in the old Methodist Church. The hours differ for NEOS so that they can see other NEOS members – please see advert. In the Portsoy Gift Box run by Pauline Benzie you will find Mark4Art and Skylark Stitches. Mark has been lucky enough to have been involved with the Gift box for a few years. Muriel produces beautiful original designed items, from crochet jackets and waistcoats, to sewn dog jackets and more Muriel is excited to be involved with NEOS at Pauline’s shop and said it is a good way to start with NEOS when you don't have a proper workshop at home that can be used. Mark and Muriel will be resident at the Gift box during NEOS from 11am- 4pm every day. In Turriff you will be able to see Brian at work dressing fishing flies. These beautiful coloured Flies are a joy to behold. The classic salmon flies are dressed on handmade hooks and mounted in solid wooden frames. Brian started dressing flies while at school.

He says he simply loves to paint and paints whatever takes his fancy on any particular day, hence a very varied portfolio.

Anne Buckle at Tawbis Studios in Kingswells Aberdeen is definitely worth a visit. Her handmade and bespoke jewellery is inspired mainly from architecture and naturally occurring abstract textures.

Muriel McGregor is Skylark Stitches and she enjoys lots of different crafts with machine sewing probably her favourite at the moment as well as knitting, beadwork and card craft.

FESTIVAL

T

his year has been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride. Everything that we have taken for granted has been thrown up in the air, only to come down in a jumbled heap. All the events that we have come to expect have been cancelled or postponed – sometimes indefinitely. 2019 saw a very successful, intimate Whisky Colours Festival in Dufftown. No-one ever thought that 2020 would be anything but the same; however Covid-19 scuppered all plans and some lateral thinking was called for. The result? A hybrid festival, adapted this year to ensure security and compliance with Government guidelines. This innovative hybrid festival will bring you, the whisky enthusiast, a series of whisky experiences that can be enjoyed here in Speyside or from the comfort of your own home. The organisers are working with a number of companies to create whisky tasting packs for hosted on-line tastings that you can enjoy from your accommodation here in Speyside. At this time of year the area is cloaked in glorious autumn colours, the skies are crisply blue and there is a tang to the air – perfection! If you cannot be here with us (if you are unable or unwilling to travel to Scotland), you can enjoy them from your own home, wherever that may be.

20

hat do we girls look for when out shopping for clothes? A shop with warm ambience, where you feel relaxed and not pressured; a choice of garments but not mile upon mile of the same design (there can be nothing worse than seeing yourself coming round the corner); clothes that are exquisitely made but not marketed at stratospheric prices; outfits that can go from casual to evening with just the added touch of a special piece of jewellery or a complementary scarf? Well, quite frankly, all of the foregoing.

22

There is one very special shop in Lossiemouth that provides everything you need to make shopping a pleasurable experience and not a rushed chore, which usually ends in a hasty purchase that turns out to be totally unsuitable.

At MY Boutique on Pitgaveny Quay you can browse to your heart’s content. Once inside the spotless, atmospheric shop, where room diffusers and candles by Connocks of London subtly perfume the air, you are allowed to take whatever time you need to search out that perfect outfit. Marie, the owner, has created a wonderfully warm and welcoming haven for her collection of clothes, which are arranged in colour coordinated sections, making browsing so much easier. A thoughtful addition to the service is the existence of a special book, wherein are recorded all the details of outfits that have been bought for – say – a very special wedding. This means that if you are attending a special event, you will not inadvertently opt for the same outfit as one of the other guests. So simple – but quite brilliant! Should you need any assistance, Marie is always ready to help you put together any outfit, be it for a casual or ultra-special occasion. And, if you would prefer to have a one-to-one appointment, this too can be arranged. Just call and book your slot – morning or evening – and you will be guaranteed a personal service second to none. Marie is very conscious of Government guidelines at this unsettling time: there is hand sanitiser at the entrance, along with disposable gloves, thus ensuring that you can touch the clothes. You may also try on the clothes (in gorgeously over-large dressing rooms) which are then kept ‘in quarantine’ for 72 hours. In short, Marie is doing everything in her power to ensure that your shopping experience is as safe as it can possibly be – and thoroughly enjoyable at the same time. Once visited, never forgotten. 25

THE WORLD OF DOGS

28

I

come from a family of dog owners/lovers, so have been surrounded by dogs my whole life.

12 years ago, I lost my much-loved Border Collie “Jess” to cancer. I had Jess from a puppy until she passed at age 16. I decided that I wanted to make a collection of her photos, but only had a few nice ones of her. I was gutted that there wasn’t going to be a longlasting record of this amazing, and much-loved dog. It was at this point I decided to teach myself photography, just so I could capture our new puppy’s life in images. I bought myself a half-decent camera and experimented with a Lifestyle point of view. For a while I posted my puppy’s photos on social media, and they started to get a massive audience, I even had some booking enquiries from dog owners who wanted similar photos of their dogs. After about a year of experimentation I decided to become a qualified photographer, so in 2010 I upgraded my camera equipment, took a Diploma in Professional photography, specialising in Dog Photography. I followed this up with a dedicated course in outdoor/action dog photography, and launched John Ferrett Photography.

As a business, John Ferrett Photography has progressed to having national and international awards, especially within the Kennel Club’s Dog Photographer of the Year competition. In 2018 I moved from England to Scotland, and now enjoy the beautiful Moray countryside. I’ve photographed many hundreds of clients’ dogs, both working dogs and pet dogs, and now work in this stunning area of Scotland. My business, as so many businesses, has been on hold during the Covid-19 outbreak, but this hasn't stopped me moving forward. During the restrictions I launched “The Dog Photography Academy”, an online recourse where I teach dog owners and photographers exactly how I capture stunning images of our much-loved pets. This side of the business is on-going, but thankfully restrictions have lifted enough so I am now taking private and commercial dog photography bookings.

COMMUNITY

S

tarting out as a mum of 4, I knew I had to find a way of support for my eldest daughter. Back in 2015 she was diagnosed with autism, depression, and a mental health illness was also to follow quickly on to her diagnosis with the support of CAHMS. This was a very hard time for us all so I took a leap of faith and bought our first very own golden retriever. I started training our pup back in 2017 when I took her to Spey Valley dog training group, which was fantastic for puppy socialisation. I then continued on to realise what our puppy could offer my daughter as a lifeline and as essential help for the years ahead. With this in mind, in 2019 I set up a breeding programme and founded Ceshrae Retrievers, along with my daughter Emma. We have become KC Quality Assured with all health testing adhered to and we practice the highest of welfare standards.

I have seen the huge demand for autism assistance dogs, along with dogs in the community to offer support to individuals living with mental health. I offer training of pet dogs as therapy dogs and breed our dogs in order to become autism assistance dogs for families with children diagnosed with ASD and mental health who have faced the difficult challenges I have along with my family. Our dogs of Ceshbrae Retrievers, based at Brae of Montgrew, Newmill can be trained to provide assistance for meltdowns, public access, calming and comforting interventions and deep pressure therapy. Along with a recognised charity based further south we have the first autism assistance dog being accepted into a Scottish college this August. I hope to be able to bring this service to many families, as well as local schools and local councils in the future. We welcome visitors to meet our retrievers and we also have red deer to meet and greet for therapy - not forgetting our very friendly Highland Bull Hamish!

RECIPES - BY GRANTIS GEE’S CABIN FEVER COOKING SHOW

INGREDIENTS 1 large chicken 1 can of beer or cider of your choice BRINE

2ltr cold water 100g pink salt 2 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp mixed herbs JAPANESE BBQ GLAZE (TARE DIPPING SAUCE)

2 chicken or veggie stock cubes 6 tbls brown sugar 500ml water 400ml light soy sauce (Japanese) 300ml white wine 1 bunch chopped spring onion 5 cloves garlic 100g chopped fresh ginger place all ingredients to a pan heat to simmering till sauce is reduced by half then allow to cool. Split the sauce in two dishes, one to glaze and one for a dip. In a bowl large enough to cover the chicken, fill bowl with 2ltr of cold water then add 100g pink salt, 2tsp smoked paprika & 1tsp mixed herbs. Give the brine a good mix then place chicken breast down into the mix making sure it’s covered with the brine, then cover with Clingfilm and store in fridge for 2 days before preparing to cook. Once chicken has brined drain and get the BBQ ready.

34

Using a drink of your choice open the can and place the chicken on top of the open can prop up onto the BBQ.

Using your cooled Tare sauce brush the skin then place the lid of the pre heated BBQ down and cook till chicken reaches approx. 75c to 80c to ensure the chicken is cooked through. During the cooking time you can continue to apply the Tare sauce with a brush to deepen the glaze. When your happy with your chicken slowly lift it from the can and BBQ and allow to rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Serve with your choice of potatoes and roast or steamed veggies.

CHICKEN Place out chicken thigh then skewer with 2 sticks this will enable you to cook the chicken evenly top & bottom then when they’re cooked and you’re happy with the result you can cut them giving you 2 chicken sticks. First of all prepare your BBQ making sure that you have nice glowing coals and not flames as they would burn the chicken and affect the flavour. Place the chicken onto the BBQ to seal both sides for 2 to 3 minutes (soaking the sticks prevents them from burning as much). Once the chicken is sealed dip in to the sauce or brush over and replace back on to the BBQ. Again the more sauce that you apply the better the glaze and deeper the flavour. With a temperature probe make sure the chicken reaches above 75c to 80c in the centre (this is above Scottish and UK guideline temp). Give the chicken one last dip or brush before serving and use the other half of the sauce as a dipping sauce. ASPARAGUS & SMOKED BACON SKEWERS Wrap 2 or 3 spears of asparagus together with bacon (depending on the size) and weave the skewer through the back making sure it holds the asparagus together. Follow as above seal off the bacon then apply the tare sauce reapplying during the cooking.

Lifestyle MAG

INGREDIENTS 6 x boned chicken thighs skin-on (if possible) 6 x rashers of smoked streaky bacon 12x asparagus spears 1x packet baby corn (blanched) 100g egg mayonnaise (optional) 1 pkt bamboo skewers (soaked in water Approx. 20 for this recipe) JAPANESE BBQ GLAZE (TARE DIPPING SAUCE)

To finish off as an option pipe mayonnaise over the finished skewer then with blow torch singe the top of the mayo giving a Japanese grilled effect. BABY CORN SKEWERS Blanch the Baby corn in boiling water for 2 to 3 minutes then refresh in cold water for the same time (this is to soften to avoid breaking when you put them on to the bamboo skewer) place approx.. 2 per stick then again seal on the BBQ and into or brushing the Tare sauce as many times as you like before serving. You can use a variation of poultry, game, pork fillet, Beef fillet, fish or veggies mixing up your BBQ and flavours.

FEELGOOD FITNESS

T

ime spent at the seaside not only provides great physical health benefits, but changes your mental outlook in the same way meditation does. Scientists have called this the blue space effect. Here’s how to get yours….. You can unwind by gazing out to sea, beachcombing, walking or running, but have you ever biked it? If your tyres are fat and chunky enough, it’s just like riding on a trail, only smoother on the sand. Challenge yourself over rocky bits, skirt the surf and go through small burns as they run into the sea, or stretch your legs on the wet sand – nothing will tone your bum and thighs like it. You can use a standard mountain bike but the wider the tyres the better. You don’t need any special adjustments, just be sure to thoroughly rinse and clean your gears and chain afterwards to get rid of the sand and salt. For the ultimate beach biking experience, try a fat bike. If you haven’t seen one, it’s basically a normal bike but with massive tyres up to 5” wide. You can set the tyre pressure super low (like 6psi) to roll over sand, snow or banks of loose pebbles. Whether you’ve got frame or fork suspension or not, the tyres make the ride naturally buoyant and bouncy. Like the first time you really tore it up on a bike when you were wee, the instant sense of fun will take you by surprise –

FANCY HAVING A GO?

I challenge you to ride one without a massive grin on your face! Moray has some amazing beaches. And the majority of them are linked by coastal paths, allowing for a great day’s exploring, almost completely off-road. Some access points to the smaller beaches may have steps or barriers you might have to lift your bike over. Longer beaches like Culbin or Roseisle let you pedal for miles and include Forestry trails through the dunes if you want to vary your ride. Remember to check the tide times before you go, and be aware of the terrain of the shoreline – you don’t want to get caught out on any unusual features like sand bars or mud flats as the tide’s coming in! So give beach biking a go – for the most relaxing blue space exercise and an unparalleled sense of freedom. Everyone I’ve talked to who has, wishes they’d discovered it sooner!

WELLBEING

I

n these challenging times Moray Wellbeing Hub has been working on creative and innovative ways to connect us. Made possible by kind support from The Wellbeing Fund, over the last few weeks, they’ve been busy putting together their first Zine! What is a Zine you may ask? A Zine is a small, self-published, nonprofessional magazine. By the people for the people! You may have also come across a similar format known as a Fanzine. A rough and ready publication made with love and soul. The idea and thinking behind the Zine project is to create a judgment free space to explore issues surrounding mental health in a creative,

brave and sometimes irreverent, challenging way through scribbles, photos, writing, poems, drawings & doodles (as long as it is suitable for all ages). For Issue 1, a call out was made to the expanding network of over 250 Moray Wellbeing Hub Champions. A Champion is someone who has a lived experience of mental health issues and wants to harness the power of these experiences to create positive change for themselves and their communities. As we all have mental health - this opportunity is open to anyone that lives in Moray. During the COVID-19 situation, Moray Wellbeing Hub has seen quite a large increase in Champions which is really inspiring and demonstrates the scope of the human resource that we have here in Moray. The Champions were contacted through the different networks within Moray Wellbeing Hub. Phone, email and their recently set-up and highly effective digital ‘Slack’ channel which acts as an easy to use and friendly central hub for communication and conversations. As an organisation, they’ve had to quickly adapt to using the power of technology to keep us all connected during these times. Another solution has been to use ‘Zoom’ video conferencing to deliver online courses, meetings and virtual gettogethers. Once again proving to be a fantastic and accessible tool.

40

From the start of the Zine project it was made clear that you don’t have to be a ‘writer’ or an

‘artist’ to submit content to the Zine. It’s just about making something collaboratively and creatively expressing ourselves in whatever way we feel. True to the values of Moray Wellbeing Hub, there is no right and wrong. Just a willingness to be proactive and be part of something and is as much about the process as the end result.

“When I heard about the Zine, it took me a bit of time to get my head around what it was all about. When I finally dropped judging myself and allowed my creative side to take over I had so much fun being playful in different ways, taking photos, creating unusual shapes with objects, connecting more with nature, supporting me to feel grounded. A real simple way for me to start expressing through different

Lifestyle MAG

mediums. Thank you for coming up with such a creative idea for us all to get involved.” - Jean Moray Wellbeing Hub are delighted to say that after a little bit of a slow nail-biting start, the submissions started rolling in! From photography, poems, writing, drawings and recipes - there has been a fabulous, eclectic range of creative material from the Champions. These have all been collated to form Issue 1 of the Zine which will be available sometime in August 2020. To find out how to get your hands on a copy (the plan is to have a downloadable digital version and a small amount of hard copies) please visit moraywellbeinghub.org.uk and check the News section or alternatively keep an eye on their social media channels. On their website is also information about how you can sign-up to become a Champion.

painted stone snake is to be made into a permanent feature in Portsoy as a reminder of thanks to local keyworkers who have worked tirelessly during the Covid-19 lockdown. Cammy Rae, age 4, and younger sister Macey (1) took inspiration from a similar idea that was shared online. They painted stones collected from the local beach and started to place them into snake formations, firstly near the Portsoy Bowling Club, and then at the Portsoy Church Centre and the town’s Liberty Boat Garden. They have since been watching the snakes grow rapidly as children and adults from the town have been decorating stones and adding them to the creations. The snakes have become

popular attractions with residents of all ages who have been admiring the brightly coloured artistic designs. Cammy commented, “I really love counting the stones on our walks, it’s exciting seeing the snakes growing so quickly, I think there are more than 130 stones on the Bowling Club snake now. We had good fun painting the stones and have been asking our friends and family to paint some too for us to add.” Bay Morrison 7 and Fearne Morrison 3 at Newmil

Members of the Portsoy Area Action Team (PAAT), who have been providing practical help and support within the community during lockdown, have pledged to secure one of the snakes permanently, and hope the Liberty Boat Garden by the Old Harbour will be the location. Angela Drummond, one of around 20 members of the PAAT said, “One of our group members saw a news story about decorated stones being cemented into a wall and thought this would be a great idea for the Portsoy stone snake. It will be a bright and cheerful feature that can be enjoyed by the people of Portsoy and visitors for some time to come.” There have been a number of stone snakes across the country and quite a few across the North East. One other one was in the village of Newmill.

It was started in the bottom playground by Lucy Mark (12) and her brother Finlay (5) after seeing the idea elsewhere. Over the months it has been added to by numerous children and adults alike. It very soon out grew the bottom playground as access was needed and it was moved up to the top playground. This is now where it stays where its future is yet to be decided. 43

COVID-19

W

e are certainly living through an extremely strange time and at the start of this crisis we all had no idea how the Coronavirus would impact on all our lives! As a Genealogist and Historian social history is a big part of my job and being honest it is something that fascinates me! I often wish that I could transport myself back in time to live a day in the life of my Ancestors. Social History is so important as it tells us about how people lived; what events impacted on their lives & often what horrors they had to go through. Coronavirus in many ways is reminiscent of the Spanish Flu of over 100 years ago. The Spanish Flu is said to have killed close to 100 million people. Yet it was not covered by the media in the way that you might have expected! So many lives had been lost during the Great War that it was felt by the public and authorities that the country could take no more trauma, the result being an unnatural silence….. so unlike today’s news coverage. As we all progress through this current crisis it does make you wonder how our own crisis will be portrayed in the generations to come and that is why the Covid Archive Project is so important. If you live in Scotland or spent time there during the crisis, we want you to tell us about your experiences, this could be through the sights, sounds, testimonies, thoughts, feelings 44 and even oddities you have come up against.

We welcome Individuals, Businesses and Organisations to submit images, audio recordings, short videos, drawings, writings, newspaper cuttings and anything else that you feel not only represents your own experience but would make an interesting addition to the Archive for future Generations. Why not submit a collection on behalf of your School, Organisation or Business relating to how the crisis has impacted on your business or group and what adjustments had to be made. We would even be happy to feature your stories via our Facebook group or within future talks with community groups relating to the project. Submissions could include experiences relating to home schooling, daily exercise, empty streets or supermarket shelves, queues at shops, working from home, working to keep the country going, being separated from friend or family, new hobbies or pastimes, NHS work, volunteering or something else… the list is endless and it is open to your own interpretation, every story is different so feel free to tell your story how ‘YOU’ see it. I am sure that most of us already have media on our phones or social media accounts already that would make a suitable contribution to the project! On completion of this project the Collection will be handed over to an Archive or Museum on the agreement that the project will be closed for a period of 40 years. Who knows

perhaps your Children Grandchildren will be able to view the collection in the years to come will get an idea of what we are all experiencing at this current time.

Moray Speyside 'Check & Protect' is the solution for every business in Moray Speyside that needs to record customer attendance data, but does not have a means doing so accurately or efficiently. Check & Protect is a partnership between Moray Chamber of Commerce and Visit Moray Speyside - it is intended to make it easier for local people and visitors to enjoy their time in our region safely. The platform will be offered FREE for use to every business across Moray Speyside following its launch in w/b 10th August. Check & Protect offers individuals a way of signing up once, then sign-in seamlessly to any venue signed up to the scheme.

No more pencils, no more scraps of paper or or trying to remember the date; just snap the QR code with your phone or enter the unique 4 digit venue code and your visit is recorded, with your contact details held remotely and securely. All patron data is automatically deleted after the required 21-day retention period. For businesses, Moray Speyside Check & Protect offers you a simple, effective means of recording visitor details in line with COVID-19 regulations. Businesses simply sign-up, then download their own set of unique QR codes, posters and promotional material. A 'dashboard' also allows businesses to manually add patron information, for example if a visitor does not have a smartphone, to view the number of check-ins to their venue, and crucially, to request their visitor data should it be required by NHS Scotland Test & Trace staff. ur route out of lockdown is proving bumpier than some of us might have expected, which is why it is really important for everyone to keep following FACTS. But that also doesn’t mean people should not be supporting local businesses to get back on their feet – where it is safe to do so. That includes magazines like Lifestyle which does so much to promote local enterprise through the year and which like many community and local media outlets is having a hard time currently. It also applies to food. Over the past few months I have been encouraging retailers to support Scottish produce and it has been great to see more quality Scottish produce being promoted by big and small grocery stores. Our fishermen and salmon producers have been particularly badly hit by the loss of overseas markets, so it is also good to see more quayside sales and fish vans becoming all the rage again. Farmers, including here in Moray, are key to keeping food on the supermarket shelves and ensuring they get their payments has been my main priority throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the huge challenges for local RPID staff, we made the EU target of 95.24% of CAP payments at the earliest ever point – and delivered on the target for Pillar 2 payments as well. This was an outstanding achievement, given that staff were working from home through the crucial Spring period to process payments. We have also announced two new funding streams for farmers to help diversify into planting

woodlands, ensuring they can contribute to our climate change ambitions. Scottish Forestry is administering a £500,000 fund to assist small farmers in buying forestry and timber processing equipment. And £1m has been made available under our Agricultural Transformation Programme to cover up to 90% of the cost to farmers of establishing woodlands. The aim is also to help bolster farm incomes and local timber supply too, helping Scottish sawmills and timber processors too. Our willingness and readiness to rally round local businesses and suppliers and to support each other in our communities has been heartening - and Scottish Ministers are determined that we keep on “loving local” in the weeks and months ahead. We are encouraging people to keep on shopping locally and using local trades people and services. I hope Lifestyle readers will play their part. 47
