SHARING SUSSEX BUSINESS STORIES SINCE 1975

All business is symbiotic in nature. You can be inspiring your peers one day, learning from them the next. In the end, people buy people. That makes sharing our stories the most compelling way to connect with one another.

What’s needed is a platform to embrace and empower our regional business ecosystem. Where varied backgrounds and perspectives provide new context. Harnessing potential, enabling growth. And at the heart of it, a dedicated term of curators unlocking insights for the good of us all.

So we’re changing the way people think of connecting. Because we believe in self-reflection, rather than self-promotion. By demystifying the art of storytelling, we deliver authentic thought leadership through events, publishing and broadcast media.

We come together to discover, share and grow. But we won’t be limited by geography, or our imagination. Instead, we’ll seek out local leaders, visionaries and experts, wherever great businesses thrive. Growing communities, in partnership with the businesses that power them. And nurturing the enterpreneurial spirit in everyone.

auction to raise money for the MS charity. Tony said: “The club is doing really well

this season, especially bearing in mind the

extra pressure of playing European football for the first time ever. I am so proud of the club and the performance of the players.” Asked in a Q+A with Overcoming MS

supporter and Sussex businessman Tim Cobb about his time as a world-ranking

poker player, Tony said: “I really enjoyed

my time as a part-time player, but the card players today can spend up to 30 hours a week studying a variety of algorithms and statistics to improve their chances. I have other commitments now.”

And questioned by Tim about how he relaxes in his spare time, Tony

responded: “I love Fawlty Towers

episodes. I have seen them all numerous times, but they still make me laugh.”

Norman Cook attended the event as a

guest of restaurateur Razak Helalat, who runs Brighton hot-spots The Salt Room, Burnt Orange, Tutto and Coal Shed.

Norman offered exclusive tickets to a

forthcoming event and afternoon tea, hosted by Norman, at his Hove Café.

“It was a great day and I was delighted

to offer a couple of auction prizes to boost the coffers,” Norman said.

The lunch was organised by Tim Cobb of Cobb PR and raised nearly £25k for Overcoming MS. Tim was diagnosed

with MS in 2012 and shared his story with guests at the lunch.

Alexandra Holden, Chief Executive of Overcoming MS, said she was

delighted with the generosity of the

Sussex community and with the raised profile that the lunch gave the charity. “It was a great day and the team and I were delighted to be a part of it,”

Alexandra said. “Overcoming MS is

here for everyone with MS who wants

to live a full and healthy life, giving hope for a brighter future with this debilitating disease. Overcoming MS helps people understand the condition and helps

Looking back, we have had two major

challenges to overcome. The first was the

economic crash of 2007. Our clients were knocked for six. They did not know what had hit them. As a supplier of marketing

and PR, Cobb PR was a very soft budgetheading. Our clients put the brakes on our work and, suddenly, the business world became a dark and scary place.

We cut back, pulled our financial belts

The second challenge was Covid.

Once again, we found ourselves in new territory. Nobody had predicted this global pandemic and nobody could

Tips on succession planning for your business Succession planning involves transferring the management and control of a business to a new owner/s. This can be a difficult and, often emotional time but the earlier you start planning the better.

Finance

A strategically

5 key steps for succession planning

thought-out

set you on the right

Being clear as to your desired outcome will help to ensure a smooth transition for both sides.

The main exit routes for shareholders are: • Transfer of the business to a family member

• Transfer of the business to a nonfamily member

Employee Ownership Trust)

Although each individual business will

have personal and bespoke needs, there are common measures which every succession plan should consider.

1. Don’t delay – Your succession plan

should be put in place at least three

years ahead of your planned exit date. Creating your plan can take a year or

so and applying it even longer. Allow yourself long enough to iron out any

unforeseen issues or challenges that may arise along the way.

2. Identify your potential successor(s) – Is there somebody you work with

who knows the business well and is ready to step in and take over the

reins? If you are considering selling, do you know who your potential purchasers might be? Equally

importantly, do they know you? What are they looking for in an acquisition

target? What can you do to make yourself more attractive?

3. P lan a realistic and achievable

timetable – Be clear on your goals

and objectives, keeping the lines of communication to your leadership teams open and concise. Ensure that any action points assigned are completed and nothing is

left to the last minute. Working

with professionals will help you

understand the timetables involved. Don’t forget that you still have a business to run!

4. Communication – Be sure to

keep key stakeholders, business partners, employees, and family

members involved in the planning process early and often. It’s key to also remember at this stage

that you keep communications

open with your clients, contacts,

and suppliers about the upcoming changes. Clearly, there are

confidentiality issues to consider here, and you do not want to

unsettle key stakeholders in your business. However, at the same

time, reassuring them that you are planning ahead will be beneficial.

5. Efficient transition process – As you move toward your retirement or new venture, it’s important to focus on

creating a strong financial future for

yourself and move away from the dayto-day operations of the business. Is the second-tier management strong enough? Any gaps?

Forward planning and the ability to think in terms of what’s best for any business is key to success. Fresh thinking

An example of an effective business model here is the family business. Family businesses are generally

passed on to younger successors.

As a result, it’s important to note this will often bring with it a new spin

such as acquiring new technology, digitalisation or expanding the

business into other areas. For example, the latest research shows that the

younger generation wants to operate

in a more environmentally and socially responsible way.

Encourage younger family members to contribute fresh ideas to the business

and involve them in key decision-making along with stakeholders. This is an

important tool so that they can improve and develop their own voice. Selling the business

Working with appropriate accounting, tax and legal experts during your

planning will ensure that no important details get overlooked. Are your

employment contracts all up to date? Insurance? Tax all up to date and no unexpected potential liabilities?

With everything in place and your

succession plan drafted, it’s a good idea to consider the services of a business broker as well as the advice of other

professionals, such as business and

business, it could take anywhere between two to five years as a rough guideline.

Depending on which route you intend to go down, once ready, if you are considering selling (or an MBO or EOT) it’s a wise idea to consider

the services of a Corporate Finance professional. In addition, the advice

of other professionals, such as your accountants and financial advisers,

goes a long way. They will be able to guide you through the process, help

you present your business in the right way to the right parties, and manage

both the process and expectations. It can be difficult to predict the timeline for selling a small business, but it

could take anywhere between one

to three years as a rough guideline.

If deferred payments are part of the

consideration, then that also needs to be factored into timescales.

Legal costs may put a party in a fix Nick Stockley, a Partner at Mayo Wynne Baxter, explains how new rules will impact the recovery of legal costs. One of the most

Legal

common questions from clients, who are engaged in a

dispute is: “Do I get

my costs back if I win?” The answer

to that question often starts with: “It

depends…” However, that answer has

changed since 1 October 2023 in both commercial disputes and the majority of civil litigation.

On 1 October 2023, new cost recovery rules came into force which apply to parties to a dispute.

The old rules on recovering legal costs in commercial disputes, which apply

16 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

to cases where proceedings were

issued before 1 October 2023, can be summarised as follows. The Old Rules: Small claims

If the claim value is under £10,000 then

the general rule is that neither party can recover its legal costs, even if they win, beyond a fixed sum prescribed by the

court. The level of recoverable costs is very low in comparison with the legal

costs that a party may incur. This rule

has not changed since 1 October 2023. Fast track claims

If the claim value is between £10,000

and £25,000 the winning party can try

to recover its legal costs from the other party subject to some restrictions.

The level of the recoverable costs will be at the court’s discretion, but the

general rule of thumb is that a court

will award a winning party about 70% of its legal costs.

Multi-track claims

If the claim value is over £25,000 then

the winning party can generally recover its legal costs from the other party. The level of the costs will, again, be at the

court’s discretion but a rule of thumb is that a court will award a winning party about 70% of its legal costs.

L EGA L SP ON SO R

or it settles during the life of the case.

The amount of recoverable costs will be determined by three main factors: 1. The value of the case;

2. The complexity of the case; 3. When the case concludes.

The new rules include a schedule which sets out exactly how much a winning

party can recover in costs depending on when the case concludes What is the benefit?

The general benefit is that there will be cost clarity to parties from the outset. At the moment, the general advice

to clients is that, if the claim is over

£10,000, a solicitor can, if they win, do what she/he can in order to recover

Staged last month, it was an occasion

that kicked off with a drinks reception,

followed by a three-course meal, huge charity auction and raffle and then live

entertainment, with a 9 piece band and a 7 hole mini golf.

A whopping £11,000 was raised on the night.

Search Seven rolled out the red carpet to celebrate its huge achievement of raising over £100,000 for 47 different charities

since they formed in 2011, with a clear vision to use the agency for good. More than 200 supporters came

together to reflect on what they have

so far achieved as a community that is passionate about giving back.

Eighteen charities were in attendance, as well as Search Seven’s clients,

partner agencies, friends and family. Webtrends Optimize was the headline

sponsor of the Charity Ball. Co-sponsors were project manager on demand, Oakwood Lofts, Accredo Secured

Business Finance, the WOW company and The Agency Collective.

Everyone who attended agreed it was

those who have supported Search Seven since 2011. Guest speaker was Donna Holland, CEO of Search Seven’s flagship good cause, Rockinghorse Children’s Charity. In an emotional part of the evening, she told everyone how the funds are being used to support the children of sussex and all charities being supported in the search seven #S7100 campaign. This was followed by a moving video illustrating the impact Search Seven has had through its fundraising efforts. Search Seven also used the evening to highlight its support for The Sussex Beacon and all other charities it has supported as part of their latest charity campaign. Gavin Willis, founder and CEO of Search Seven, said: “I was absolutely blown away by how well the evening went. “The room looked fantastic and the vibe in the room was just electric.

“The evening was so much fun, with clients, charities, partner agencies, and supporters, all rallying together to show true community spirit – it was a special night and I am so proud of what we have achieved.” Search Seven would like to thank everyone who came along, donated prizes, took part in the raffle, and bid in the auction. Massive shout-out to the Search Seven charity ball event partners me&you,

MCR Media Solutions, MOREVER, Buff

including former US world champion Mike Tyson and fellow UK and world champion Lennox Lewis.

During the event, Frank discussed the

importance of discipline when fighting some of the world’s greatest boxers.

This meant spending long periods of

time away from his family and ignoring distractions that were at times set up by his opposition.

Frank also discussed what it was like to fight former world champion, Mike

Tyson. He mentioned that he was

surprised to have challenged Tyson in

the ring. But despite his efforts, Tyson would come back stronger. Frank

said, “He was a very dangerous and a high impact puncher.” Although Frank

didn’t win, he embraced his losses and respected his opponents.

In addition to being a boxing legend,

Frank is an advocate for mental health. Frank told the audience that we need to talk more about mental health and embrace vulnerabilities in the UK.

In 2003, the media reported that Frank

introspection was necessary. We had

to ask ourselves the tough questions: Who are we? What impact are we striving to make? Are we on the

right path? Despite our success, we

realised that we lacked a clear brand strategy. This realisation marked the

beginning of a transformative journey for Silicon Brighton.

Our vision crystallised: to make

These values became our guiding light, shaping how we interact and what

Silicon Brighton as the approachable, laid-back face of the tech industry, a

group dedicated to bringing people out from behind their screens to connect, collaborate, and create.

To sustain and grow, we have evolved our funding model. Traditional

membership has given way to a more flexible supporter model, allowing voluntary contributions from all,

Cost-benefit analysis of MAXUS electric vans for businesses Rivervale Group delves into the cost-benefit analysis of electric vans in the UK and explains why MAXUS commercial electric vans should be your top choice. In today’s rapidly

landscape, it’s crucial for UK businesses

to stay ahead of the

curve by adopting sustainable and cost-effective solutions. One such

solution that has gained significant

traction in recent years is the transition to electric vehicles (EVs).

Comparing upfront costs and maintenance expenses

When considering the purchase of an

electric van in the UK, the initial price tag

may seem higher compared to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles. However, the good news is that there are numerous government grants and tax incentives

designed to make the switch to electric more accessible for businesses.

Furthermore, electric vans have a

distinct advantage when it comes to maintenance costs. Unlike vehicles with internal combustion engines

(ICE), EVs have significantly fewer

components, resulting in substantial

savings on maintenance expenses. As

the owner of a MAXUS electric van, you’ll have access to an extensive

How a family holiday in Cornwall inspired a career in hotel management Andrew Mosley, General Manager of The Grand Hotel in Brighton, looks back on his career and explains why creating an ‘experience’ for guests and diners is so important. I am immensely proud

Lifestyle

to say that my career in hotels spans more than 40 years.

It all started for me in Cornwall on our

family holiday in the summer of 1979. I

was 14 years old. A week self-catering that included one evening when Mum and Dad would treat the four of us to a ‘posh meal’. I think it was at The

Trevose Head Hotel near Padstow.

Looking back, perhaps not that posh

after all, but I loved it! Coincidentally, we were served that evening by

two young staff from my hometown

(Kettering In Northamptonshire) working a holiday season.

“It’s great” they said, “we work

breakfast, then hit the beach, then

come back to serve dinner and then quite often there’s a drink or two

after work in the staff quarters.” That sounds good, I thought to myself.

Especially the beach and the drinking bits. “The following day we do the

same. Up, breakfast, beach, dinner,

drinks. And then the same again and

again and again… in fact, all summer.” Somewhat naively, I was hooked.

However, I later realised that there

was a greater force at play here. How just being in that hotel made me feel.

How it played with my emotions. Once dinner was over, my younger brother and I would explore. We found a

swimming pool, the lounge, a snooker table, corridors that led to what I

envisaged were the most incredible

bedrooms (well much better than mine at home anyway!) and reception areas with views of the sea. Just imagine

being part of this, I thought to myself! My pursuit of a career in hotels next took me to the Swallow Hotel in

Northampton. I rang them up and asked to speak to the Personnel Manager. Sadly ,I have no recollection of that

person’s name but I will be eternally

grateful to them for making one hour free in their diary and seeing me.

As advised, I studied for my O Levels

and then A Levels, and later a degree in

Hotel Management. Whenever possible, I got part time work. Firstly, as a kitchen porter at The Talbot Hotel in Oundle.

I remember straining my neck to look through the doors into the restaurant

whenever they would flap open. Oh, to be in there. I bet it’s amazing!

Once at university (well, Polytechnic to be precise) I did some silver service at The Post House Hotel in Northenden,

South Manchester, before taking on my first bar job at The Bowling Green Pub in Chorlton – again South Manchester.

After uni, I joined Shire Hotels, a small

provincial hotel company based at the time in the North West, but then grew into the south in 1990 by opening

The Solent Hotel near Southampton. I was Deputy Manager and it was

from there that I was promoted to

my first general manager’s job at The

North Lakes Hotel – one of their 4 star

hotels in Penrith, just outside the Lake District. It was the autumn of 1993. I

was 28. But, moreover, it was just 14 years on from The Posh Meal and I

had achieved my goal running a hotel. I left Shire Hotels in 1998 to move to Corus and Regal Hotels before

then joining De Vere Hotels in 2001.

The subsequent four years included time at The Belfry, near Birmingham – perhaps most famously known for

having hosted four Ryder Cups. As a golfer myself, I was now combining

business and pleasure in a way I could have ever imagined! I then worked for QHotels in Winchester – overseeing

the development and build of a 185

bedroom 4 star hotel before coming to The Grand in 2010.

I have always been privileged to work

with incredible teams – but The Grand team is extraordinary – dedicated,

professional and fun in equal measure – with a passion to look after our customers in a way that sets us

apart from our competition. I say this

regularly, but I am truly humbled to be the manager of this incredible, iconic

hotel, but moreover to be in a position to lead the team within it.

In 2019 I had what I still distinguish as my career highlight when we

won a Catey. The Catey’s are the

hospitality industry’s pinnacle awards and we were recognised as The Best Employer in our industry that year.

The dinner and awards took place at

Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 2nd July. My 54th birthday! And 40

In 1979 I didn’t even know what a

Catey was, but if you had told me then I would be in charge of The Grand

and we would win one, I would have thought I was dreaming. So dreams can come true!

If you sit back and think about it,

spending lots of money going out for,

let’s say, dinner actually makes little or no sense at all. The bottom line is that, essentially, we would all be better off financially if we stayed in and cooked for ourselves! Our family posh meal, back in the summer of 1979, more than likely
