hankfully, the weatherman missed his North Texas forecast and the rain held off for RAW’s Second Annual Volunteer Appreciation Run & Social held on April 2. Nonetheless, RAW heeded the warning for the impending soaking and made a race day decision to change the location

Thank you to the volunteers who made this event happen: Ray Harris for measuring and marking the course, Gary Howsam for continuing his role as the ultimate water duty volunteer by manning the aid station, Joe Luccioni for his set up and clean up assistance, Jack Hase for timing (he even got to race) Melissa Schlenker as our Fun Run Director, Tony Flesch for helping the runners figure out their start time, Kelly Richards for her assistance in seeking raffle prize donations, Tia Metzger, Karen Bosworth, Kat Sparks and Staci Rivero for their assistance with the food prep and raffle prizes. This was an event about celebrating our RAW Volunteers and we were thrilled to have so many wonderful raffle prizes up for grabs. We had more than $600 in gift cards and more than 25 race entries in addition to an assortment of running gear and miscellaneous items available. RAW thanks each and every RAW Volunteer who gives back to the club through their
to the covered Trawick Pavilion at Oak Grove Park. Neither the weather nor the location change took away from the RAW Volunteers enjoying their evening racing, socializing and winning raffle prizes. The fun started with the highly anticipated age-based five-mile handicapped race. RAW handicapped the start times in one-minute increments based on each person’s gender and age. The first racers to toe the line were eight year-old Scott Noell and his 71-year-old grandmother, Pat Noell. For the next 16 minutes, Tony Flesch and RAW’s Fun Run Director Melissa Schlenker made sure the racers headed off on their run at the correct start time. In addition to bragging rights, the first three runners to cross the finish line also got first selection on the raffle prizes. Congratulations to Henry Galpin (66) on his win! Henry was followed by young gun, Jeff Garber (48) and Michael Dunkel (53). Kelly Richards (44) was the first female to cross the finish line.

When volunteer opportunities come up for RAW aid stations, trail clean up days, RAW race day volunteers, etc...and you will be the first person we seek out as volunteers.
