Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers April 2017 Dear Last month brought a time change , a change in the weather, and a profound change to our RAW family. A well-respected and beloved charter member, Terry Marcott, passed away on March 1. Terry served RAW well as a board member, race director, friend, coach and mentor to many people. David Ball shares his remembrance of Terry (see below). At April's board meeting, we will discuss a more permanent remembrance for Terry. Several members attended a CPR training class last month. Thank you to Debbie Carpenter and Michael Bassano for teaching the class. Our 20th Anniversary Celebration continued with March Madness RAW Style. Members played games of "PIG " with Alan Sivakumaran winning $20 and bragging rights as RAW's best hoops shooter. It was a great social with pizza and lots of laughs. Many RAW members were "Off to the Races" at the Grasslands Trail Run at LBJ National Grasslands near Decatur on March 18. April will also provides several opportunities to run, volunteer and socialize with RAW. We're Off to the Races again on April 8 with the Run4Elise 5K in Southlake. You won't want to miss the one night only screening of Boston--The Documentary on April 19. In conjunction with Earth Day, our 20th Anniversary celebration features a project to install planters around the pergola posts. Come to the clubhouse on Thursday, April 20 to assist with planters and/or Saturday, April 22 to plant flowers. Our penultimate anniversary event is scheduled for Saturday, May 20. The "Cheers to 20 Years Anniversary Gala" will be held at Cowboys Golf Club from 6-10 PM. Renaissance woman, Alexi Pappas, the featured guest speaker, is sure to inspire and entertain you with stories about her 2016 Olympics and all that she's accomplished in her short life. Gala tickets are available at the clubhouse on the weekends or online. It has been an unbelievable 20 years for RAW and I have always felt a sense of community since joining in 2001. Our club has come together to assist fellow club members, volunteer within the community, and create a welcoming, family-like atmosphere. On a personal note, RAW members offered assistance when I underwent treatment for leukemia in 2009. RAW has created a unique and caring atmosphere we can all be proud of. No matter the speed you run or the distance you walk, RAW welcomes everyone to join, and actively participate while creating a fun, social, and caring environment. If you are interested in getting more involved, we are accepting applications for Board positions for the 2017-2019 term. Several positions are open including President, Secretary, Assistant Treasurer, and Director Positions. Nomination forms will be at the clubhouse soon. Serving on the board is a great way to give back to our sport and club. See you at the trails! Diane Hernandez VP and Acting President

Remembering Terry

Terry shows off his usual perfect form at the TD Bank Beach-to-Beacon 10K in Cape Elizabeth, Maine on August 1, 2015. By David Ball "Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, and leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same." --Flavia Weedn There's still something eerie about saying 'remember Terry' in a sentence. His footprints on MY heart were almost literal when I popped off at him at RAW after he said I could qualify for Boston back in 2003. Terry was the King of RAW in my opinion and surely the fastest runner in the club. Never a braggart, he was first rate confident because the man knew, lived, and embraced hard work, and commitment. "We aren't all gifted like you, Terry," I said. BIG mistake. He came back at me with a well-deserved retort that included my bad training: too few weekly miles, weak form, average genetics--but also an indomitable spirit of heart that COULD be enough if I fixed the other things. How did he know all this about me? I didn't think he even knew me. His challenge ended up being so much more than running. It was about a proven champion believing in my ability more than I did. "IF I train you Ball, you'll keep your mouth shut; do exactly as I say; and you will never question me. IS THAT understood!?" I eagerly agreed, but was deathly afraid of letting him down.

Nearly two years went by following Terry's plan. I was re-inventing my running while training with RAW member Lee Miller. We reported our bi-weekly progress, and got the usual, "Keep at it; you'll get there. Oh, I'm adding more drills." In Terry lingo, that means 'Good work boys! Luv ya'. Then the Austin Marathon came back around. I was already a 4-timer there. "Execute the plan" was Terry's all-business voice in my head. I ended up shattering my previous PR by 16 minutes and qualified for Boston 2005. Terry earned my utmost respect, and I called him Coach from that day forward. It didn't surprise me that Terry had the same effect on countless other runners. The full story includes the "Marcott effect" on his men in the Army. A Command Sergeant Major in the Army (Reserves), Terry left his successful civilian job to return to Iraq to serve his country. I emailed him while he was there, and heard about his running exploits in an active military zone. When he returned home after his second tour, he spent some time in North Carolina before returning to RAW. In the last two years, Terry shared with me and others he needed a medical procedure to correct his esophagus damage caused by acid reflux. Sounded scary, but he never complained. Between treatments, we'd see Terry at the clubhouse with guarded condition, but still with his Marcott wit. He managed to get in some miles with friends, and once again we saw that thoroughbred running form. News later came out about his continued weight loss, and he did not seem to be improving. His Facebook posts revealed a much more serious condition. Then, stomach cancer. My visits to "Coach" in the hospital were difficult, but we had some very deep heartfelt conversations about life, gratitude, faith, and family. He shared how much it meant for him to be surrounded by his girls, granddaughter, and wife of 38 years, Nancy. Terry passed away with them at his bedside before dawn on March 1. Our RAW family said good-bye to Terry at a large memorial gathering in his Denton church on Saturday, March 4. A week later, he was laid to rest with full military honors at the DFW National Cemetery. RAW has been greatly enriched by our friend and co-founder, Terry Marcott. He lived, breathed and exhibited excellence every day in running and in life. His footprints on our hearts left us forever changed.

Run 4 Elise

Unimaginably, thirteen year old competitive swimmer Elise Cerami drowned at swim practice on June 20, 2016. Elise was healthy, vibrant, incredibly smart and lived life full of passion. Swimming was her first love. But like her mother, who is a runner and former longtime member of RAW, Elise enjoyed running, too, having run track in the fall of 2015. Elise volunteered at one of the coldest Bold in the Cold races to date and at Double Trouble - experiences she enjoyed. (See article in the December 2016 Footprint for more information.) Now we ask RAW members to participate in a special RAW Off To The Races to honor Elise's memory by participating in the first Run4Elise 5K on April 8. Our team name is LGRAW. All proceeds from the Run4Elise will benefit the Elise Cerami Memorial Scholarship. Special Guest: 2016 US Olympic Team Swimmer Katie Meili, Two-time Olympic medalist in both Gold and Bronze!

Volunteers Make a Difference

Are you ready to take your club commitment to the next level? Engage more, meet new people, and make a difference in the running community by volunteering in one of many ways coming available now! Nomination Committee The 2017 LGRAW Board election is coming up in July. Many positions will be open at that time. The nomination committee is tasked first and foremost with soliciting candidates who will serve on the board. Do you like to talk to people? If so, you're qualified for this committee! The committee will also coordinate posts for Facebook and the FOOTPRINT, update the application of interest and make it available to potential candidates, and eventually, create the ballot for the July 4 election. This committee's time involvement is approximately four months, mid-March through July 4. For more information, contact Monica at secretary@lgraw.com or Diane at vp@lgraw.com. RAW Board of Directors

Do you have what it takes to be a leader at RAW? Don't worry, no resume is required, and you don't have to take an oath, raise funds, or go through an initiation. All you have to do to qualify is be a member and to step up. Open positions this year include President, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary, and several directorships. Curious about what serving on the RAW board is like? Feel free to ask any current board member, or attend one of our upcoming meetings on the second Monday of each month. Interested in running for office? Go to Facebook and the FOOTPRINT for an application.

Graduating Seniors Each June, we highlight the sons and daughters (or members themselves) who are graduating from high school or college. If you have someone that we should include, please send a photo, name, school, and brief outline of future plans to pr@lgraw.com. Send no later than May 22, 2017.

20th Anniversary RAWear Store If you missed the 20 th Anniversary RAWear pre-sale back in November and December, here is how you can still get your hands on a shirt. The same shirts that were sold at the clubhouse are available online at lgraw.logosoftwear.com. There, you will also find sweats, hoodies, tanks, and other items you can order as designed, or customize to your liking. To customize any item, click on that item and then click "customize" in the size/ordering box on the right. You can move, re-size, change, or add logos, change the color, or pick a different product altogether from that screen. Before you order, make sure to check the top of the page for a banner with a coupon code that will reduce the cost of your selections a little more. This LogoSoftWear store will remain active until the end of the year-long 20 th Anniversary celebration. LGRAW receives no commissions or income of any kind from sales on this site.

March Madness, RAW Style 20th Anniversary Celebration March Madness, the March 20th Anniversary Celebration event, was an evening of competitive rounds (if you take into consideration we're runners) of the basketball game PIG. Over 30 people came out to Trawick Pavilion to play, cheer, eat pizza and socialize on the gorgeous spring evening. The final round came down to Alan Sivakumaran and Ben Watson with Alan prevailing as the champion. See above for details on our next 20th event. Only three events remain in our year-long celebration, and you won't want to miss any of them!

Saving Lives: CPR Training

By Janet Dixon One of the great things about RAW is the many opportunities offered to us as members. Recently, a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) class was organized for RAW members interested in being certified or recertified in CPR. The class was led by instructor and RAW member, Debbie Carpenter, Carrollton Fire Battalion Chief, and assisted by Michael "Jersey Mike" Bassano, Double Oak EMS Coordinator. The class was held at the Grapevine Rec Center allowing plenty of space for each of us to practice our compressions on the many "Brad" Manikins with personal masks. The ability to recognize and practice both compression and breathing techniques built confidence in attendees. The class was informational, interesting and fun. Awareness and application of CPR, along with Emergency Medical Support, have increased survival rates. It is not about perfect compressions. Being CPR Certified allows you to recognize a person in need of CPR and confidently follow the steps of the CPR process including operation of an Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED). As a club member and citizen, make it a point to become CPR certified. You never know when you may be the next person to take part in saving someone's life.

20 Fun & Fascinating Facts about RAW

By Kelly "K2" Richards 1. Since the earliest days of the club's existence, members of RAW have participated in the Germanfest Fun Run 5K and15K held in Muenster, Texas each April. For several years a group of RAW members would camp out (on a member's family land) for the weekend enjoying the festival then race on Sunday. These days, most members drive up to Muenster, race and drive back all on the same day. 2. In May 1998, club members collectively ran for 48-hours on a treadmill as a fundraiser. 3. During a weekend run in the summer of 1998, Jeff Brown referred to Kelly Sizelove nĂŠe Woodmansee and Kelly Richards as K1 and K2 respectively. The nicknames immediately stuck. 4. Following the three Protectors of Freedom 5Ks that RAW produced, the Michael Lynch Foundation gave RAW an award of appreciation (2002) and service (2004). The appreciation award (hanging at the RAW clubhouse) includes a piece of metal from the collapsed World Trade Center where Michael died on September 11, 2001. 5. In 2004 and 2006, the Hound Dog Hustle entry form won the silver award from Runner Triathlete News for best entry form. 6. In April 2005, RAW held the first of four or five movie nights at the clubhouse. A large screen was set-up on the south outside wall of the clubhouse and the movie was projected onto the screen. Attendees sat in lawn chairs or on blankets and watched Running on the Sun: the Badwater 135.

Movie nights were the brainchild of Rick Sanford who also provided all the audio video equipment. 7. Beginning in spring 2006, the FOOTPRINT featured a column called Get HIP: Health and Injury Prevention. K2 wrote many of the articles but also solicited others to contribute including Bart Yasso (April 2007), Katie McGregor (August 2007) and Dr. Marybeth Crane who became a regular columnist, sharing her expertise on foot care, injury prevention and treatment. 8. Bird on the Run, a 4-Mile Run (race) on the trails of the Preserve and Walnut Grove National Recreation Trail and 1-Mile Trail Fun Run on the Bluebird Trail on the Preserve at Bob Jones Nature Center in Southlake, was sponsored by RAW for the three years the run took place (2009, 2011 and 2012). Many members raced and volunteered at the runs each year. 9. In 2009, Runner's World magazine did a feature story on ultra-distance runner legend, Grasslands Trail Run founder and RAW member Suzi Cope. The Longing is a deeply personal and raw story about the pains and joy of life - on and off the trail. 10. In 2010, the board of directors appointed past Treasurer, Craig Minyard (2001- 2007), to the board as Assistant Treasurer. Beginning in 2011, the Assistant Treasurer has been an elected position and every board has had an Assistant Treasurer and Treasurer. 11. In March 2011, two 11-member RAW teams, named Hoo RAW and Who? RAW, ran the 203 mile Texas Independence Relay from Gonzales, Texas to Houston, Texas. 12. A top priority for then-president Kathryn Gleghorn was recognizing the many volunteers that keep RAW running. RAW's first volunteer appreciation was held on February 29, 2012. The event included a fun run, pizza, and raffle for prizes that included race entries, gift cards and much more. 13. In April 2012, RAW held a Fiesta-Themed Fun Run. A Mexican-themed potluck breakfast with confetti eggs and a piĂąata followed the run. There was also a salsa (food not dance) contest. Ray Henry's Big Gorilla Salsa won the traditional salsa contest while Michelle Liles Pineapple Salsa won the non-traditional contest. Debbie Carpenter's Chipotle salsa was the runner-up. Melissa "Lulu" Schlenker presented the morning's festivities. 14. In April 2013, the city of Grapevine's Keep Grapevine Beautiful program hosted a BBQ at the clubhouse to recognize all the RAW volunteers who help keep the Horseshoe Trails area clean. Photos from the event can be found here. 15. In the summer of 2012, RAW launched a totally new website. The new features included the ability to register for races and renew (club) membership online. 16. In July 2013, 18 months after being paralyzed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver, member Ray Cruthirds (living in MS), won the wheelchair division in his first race, post-accident, at the RiverShack 2-Mile, in New Orleans. 17. In April 2015, RAW held an evening walk to celebrate the start of National Public Health Week. Around 30 people participated in the family-friendly event. The walk was followed by light and healthy refreshments. Kathryn Gleghorn and K2 headed up the event. 18. On April 4, 2015, RAW donated timing services to the first annual Run2Rebuild 5K held at Meadowmere Park. 19. The following RAW members have been recipients of the RRCA 2000 Hours Outstanding Volunteer Recognition Program: Ray Harris, Susan Barnett, David Ball, Jack Hase, Gary Howsam, Jeff Barnhart, Joe Luccioni, Kathryn Gleghorn and Kelly "K2" Richards. 20. On April 29, RAW's eldest and perhaps most esteemed member, United States Army Air Force Colonel Ret., WWII and Korean War veteran Loren Keeffe, will turn 93!

RAW to the Races: Grasslands Trail Run

Plenty of RAW members ran and volunteered at the race. Pictured L to R: Jason Choi, Danyah Arafat-Johnson, Debbie Yatko, Leana Sloan, Chris Morris, Monica Waite, Mike Ryan, Dion Mcintire.

By Chris and Anne Barnwell RAW members returned to the LBJ National Grasslands once again to run, volunteer, or both at the 19th Annual Grasslands Trail Run. The weather--always the wild card when planning for Grasslands--brought us sun and high temperatures. The lack of rain leading up to the race and guarantee of no mud also brought in a record number of race participants for the event. "Beachlands" became the nickname for this year's race as the dry conditions created a sandy course for our runners. Regardless, three new course records were achieved--a new course record for both the male and female 50-mile and a new course record for the female marathon. RAW members had some fast finishing times including Sandie Nathan who placed 2nd female overall in the Half Marathon and Leana Sloan as the top female Masters finisher in the Half Marathon. Thank you to the many RAW members that also volunteered. RAW members worked at packet pick up, marked the course, manned the Outback Aid Station, helped at the finish line, and assisted with clean up. A special thank you to Karen "Boz" Bosworth for arriving early on Friday and staying until Sunday, helping with anything that had to be done. Next year's race will be the 20th Annual and will be held on St. Patrick's Day. We have already started to plan the celebration!

Road Runners Club of America News By Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA At-Large Director Celebrating Community Transformations Through Running The 59 th Annual RRCA National Convention was held in Detroit, Michigan March 9-12. Running club board of directors, race directors, vendors and every day runners from around the country went to the Motor City to learn about responsible governance

and best practices, network with running industry vendors and leaders, meet Olympians and other running legends, for conviviality, and of course, run. "The D" delivered on all the above and then some with a vibrant and transformed downtown. The sites seen during the morning group runs such as the Spirit of Detroit, Comerica Park, Ford Field, Fox Theatre, the Ambassador Bridge, spectacular sunrises, lighthouses, and Windsor, Ontario, Canada -just across the river allowed for plenty of Selfie stops. The Riverwalk and Dequindre Cut Greenway were great urban trails. Considering it was "feels like" 9 °, there were a surprisingly large number of runners each morning. All were awarded with shirts from Leslie Jordan and medals from Ashworth Awards after the daily runs. The convention concluded on Sunday morning with the Corktown Races 5K, the RRCA National Championship 5K. I managed to place in the top 100 women and 3 rd in my Age Group! Attendees were educated by day and entertained at all times. BMI, the bridge between songwriters and the businesses and organizations that want to play their music publicly, led a session on the new music license service the RRCA offers its members. They brought musician, singer, songwriter and runner Kendell Marvel who performed live at the session! One night, convention attendees had the entire Detroit Historical Museum to themselves. All around the museum were food and beverage tasting stations from a variety of local restaurants. There was beer from Motor City Brewing Works and wine, as well. Luncheon speakers included Doug Kurtis who has run 200+ sub 3:00 hour marathons, and Craig Virgina3-time Track & Field Olympian and 2-time World Cross Country Champion. They keynote speaker was Olympian and RRCA Road Runner of the Year Desiree (Desi) Linden who trains with the Hanson's-Brooks Original Distance Project Team. Boston marathon race director Dave McGillivray and George Hirsch, co-founder of the New York City marathon, founding publisher of The Runner Magazine and former worldwide publisher of Runner's World were in attendance to be recognized for their induction into the RRCA Distance Running Hall of Fame. Each of these individuals shared their compelling stories with a unique style and message but there was a common theme amongst all - the more you give, the more you get back. I am proof that the more you give to the sport of running the more you get back from it. I've given the RRCA 11 years of service, three as a State Representative and the last eight as an At-Large Director. March 31 was my last day on the board of directors. I've fund raised, donated, volunteered, used my vacation days for board meetings and still I have received so much more than I have given. I'm grateful for the experience and the opportunity to share it with you. Stay connected to the RRCA by liking them on Facebook and following them on Twitter and Instagram.

Mark your calendar! The 60 th Annual RRCA Convention is April 5-8, 2018 in Washington. D.C./Virginia and will be held in conjunction with the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run
