Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers July 2017 Dear Lake Grapevine Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers celebrated its official 20th birthday this past month. Do you remember when you joined RAW? Whether you are a new member, recently joined, or a member who has been around for years, we want to thank you for being a part of our club. I invite our membership to come out to this year's July 4th Annual Picnic and Membership Meeting at the clubhouse. We have a planned Picnic Potluck beginning at 5:30 p.m. (Parking can become an issue as the evening progresses, so arriving by 5:30 is a good idea.) Our annual Members Meeting, and the Board of Directors Election will begin at 7:00 p.m. We will also award our 2017 Best Foot Forward award to a special club member that evening. Recently, our club has been recognized by the City of Grapevine for our contributions in sponsoring improvements to city parks, for participating in community events, and for providing scholarships to area students. In our 20 years, we have donated more than $100,000 to nonprofits throughout the City of Grapevine and Texas, and continue to promote healthy lifestyles. We also worked with the City Council and city staff to have the City of Grapevine designated as a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Runner Friendly Community. I am proud to inform our members that the City of Grapevine proclaimed the 20th day of June 2017 as Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Day. I was honored to receive a beautiful Proclamation Certificate from Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate, which will soon be displayed at our clubhouse.

Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate presenting the Proclamation to Diane Hernandez Thanks to everyone who has assisted over the years to help improve the Grapevine parks and trails system with RAW clean-up initiatives, along with the Keep Grapevine Beautiful campaign. We look forward to continuing to work with the City of Grapevine Parks and Recreation Department in the months to come. RAW proudly presented Kylen Dukes the 2017 LGRAW college scholarship at our June board meeting. I want to offer a special thanks to our Scholarship Selection Committee volunteers for their hard work in setting up the criteria, reviewing the essays, and selecting this year's recipient. The committee was chaired by Kathyrn Gleghorn, and included Belynda Warner, Kat Sparks, Doug Keefe, and Carol Schumm. (See RAW Scholarship winner announcement for details). I would like to take this opportunity to recognize our RAW volunteers and their special efforts this past month. Joe Luccioni recently headed up the RAW Aid Station at the Wounded Warrior Military Miles Half, 10K, and 5K race in Las Colinas on June 11, 2017. Thirteen RAW volunteers handed out water and Gatorade to runners on the outbound and inbound legs of the half marathon for this race. Volunteers included Joe and Evelyn Luccioni, Diane and Bob Ferguson, Alan Angus, Gary Howsam, Christine and Michael Bassano, Elieen Pontaoe, Chris Reyher, and John and Gloria Bush and their family. Another RAW volunteer opportunity came on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Paul Hudson 5K, an early morning race near the Anatole Hotel, close to downtown Dallas. RAW volunteers Joe Luccioni, Ray Harris, Christine and Michael Bassano, Chris Reyher, and John Bush manned the Aid Station at the race's turn around. The impact of volunteering at a race this size can be significant to the runner's overall race experience. Christine Bassano said that many of the runners were dressed in in themed 80's attire, making this volunteer experience one to remember. Finally, I would like to recognize those RAW volunteers who came out in the rain to volunteer at the Grapevine Heroes 5K, even though the race was cancelled after a long delay. RAW volunteers are really appreciated. Special gratitude goes out to those who volunteered in June for weekend water duty. We had a lot of rainy days over the weekends, and unpredictable weather in June, so thank you for serving our runners and walkers. I look forward to seeing everyone at the lake, and on July 4th! Celebrate Independence Day at RAW

Friendship, Fun & Fireworks The time has come, once again, to join your LGRAW friends and family for our July 4th Picnic, Annual Meeting, and Election. We have some of the best seats in town to view the fireworks over the lake, and you know we always enjoy ourselves! Bring your own chairs or blankets to sit on. The club will provide meat, condiments, paper plates, utensils, and napkins. This is a BYO drinks event. "What can I bring?" We're glad you asked! We've come up with a simple answer, and by age group division no less: Age 18 to 35 Salad Age 36 to 45 Side Dish of your choice Age 46 and over Dessert We'll start eating around 5:30 p.m., and the Annual Members' Meeting and Board of Directors Election will begin at 7:00 p.m. Individual members may cast one ballot in the election, and each family membership may cast two ballots. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. Parking is allowed for this event in the grass lot south of the clubhouse. We're looking forward to seeing you on the fourth!

RAW 20th Anniversary Committee

Thanking The Committee By Belynda Warner In May of 2016, I advertised for members to form a committee that would plan the celebration of RAW's 20th Anniversary. Dave Aungst, Kathryn Gleghorn, Michelle Liles, Kelly "K2" Richards, and Kat Sparks stepped up to help. While I was the chair of this committee, I am certainly not the one to thank for the more than one dozen monthly celebrations held between July 2016 and June 2017. I coordinated our meetings, and then our talented, all-volunteer committee organized and implemented everything from happy hours and dinners out to basketball games and wine crawls. We even joined with many RAW members to complete a service project at the clubhouse as our way to give back and leave an enduring legacy long after our 20th year has come and gone. Belynda Warner and Kelly "K2" Richards In addition to our committee members, other RAW members also helped with the yearlong celebration. Michelle led a separate committee which produced the 20th Anniversary Gala - Cheers to 20 Years! David Ball created the 20th Anniversary logo, and Jay Jones created the banner than has adorned most monthly events. Jay also designed and built the planters we installed for Earth Day, with the help of Russ and Liz Wedemeyer. Imelda Douglas led us through "Roga," while Jack Hase led at least one of our social runs. RAW has amazing volunteers who often step up without expecting anything in return! https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1128090452830&format=html&print=true

RAW Charter Member Memories

Part Two We asked RAW charter members to share some special memories with us. Here is what they had to say. Chris Reyher and John Bush: Who invited you to join the group? Chris: Ray Harris, in my case. John: I heard through the city that the group was having an organizational meeting at the REC, a meeting led by Richard Craft. When did you know that RAW was going to "make it" as a club? Chris: When I joined (laughter). It was the people. I saw right away they were dedicated and wanted to get with the program and make it good. John: The building or whatever, that doesn't make the club. When we used to meet down in the parking lot in the back of Richard's van, we had a pretty good group of people, and that's what made the club.

Chris Reyher and John Bush

What's your favorite RAW memory? Chris: It's what I call The Impossible 5K. It was for the time change in the fall. We started at the clubhouse at 1:59 (a.m.) and ran a 5K. We were back, before an hour was up, at 1:30 a.m., something like that. We finished before we started. And that's a record! John: This guy (Chris) also did a 5K walking around the building. (Chris was unable to recall how many laps he'd calculated were required to complete 5K in those tiny circles, but a reliable independent researcher determined that approximately 30 clubhouse laps equal one kilometer.) We had one run, I think we called it a wine chaser. Originally, we were going to start at the club and run into town, do a 5K or something, and then come back for wine and cheese. I set up the clock, and everybody was supposed to go run ... and nobody went. We just stayed at the clubhouse and ate the wine and cheese. You know you got a good club there when the social part of the event was a lot more important than the running was. How has RAW membership enhanced your life? Chris: All the great friends we've made. John: When you go to work, you're only meeting the people you work with, who share the common interests of the business you're in. You live in a neighborhood, and we're all in the same socio-economic group, basically living in the same house. The thing I like about the club is that we have everybody from unemployed people to people with PhD's and doctors. We have one common interest that doesn't have anything to do with how much money you make, where you live, who you were ... we all had that common interest of running. After 20 years, what about RAW seems as though it never changes? Chris: No change in the dues. Can you believe that! John: Richard was adamant, when he formed the club, that he wanted a club that wasn't an elite club. A lot of the other clubs he'd been associated with in the metroplex, or other cities, had centered around your real fast runners, your elite runners. We had those types, but we also wanted to include the people who didn't run so fast or the people who didn't run and just wanted to walk. Then, if you can't walk, you can still come and participate in the social part of it. That's what appealed to me about the club from day one. And https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1128090452830&format=html&print=true

they've held that through the twenty years. We respect and admire the ones who can run a two-hour and thirty-minute marathon, and who can win races, but the club is about more than winning races. Who is now a good friend that you might never have met without being a RAW member? Chris: Certainly John, but there's been so many. John: Before the club came along, I did all my running from my house, and I did it a lot later than seven or eight o'clock. Some days I'd run, some days I wouldn't. You form friendships at the club. You make commitments to these friends. You had to be there, no matter how bad you felt from the night before. Gabe Pugliese: Who invited you to join the group? I had been running with another friend (Tom Byno) I had met through running local races. Tom heard about a new running club forming in Grapevine, so for one of our Saturday runs, we went to the lake and met up with Richard Craft, founder of LGRAW, and about six other runners. They invited us to join up, so we did. When did you know that RAW was going to "make it" as a club? After we acquired the clubhouse and started our own races to bring in enough income to cover expenses. What's your favorite RAW memory? When I ran Boston the first time, I went to the Texas House before the race with the other runners from RAW. Running Boston was my biggest running goal back then and being able to share the anticipation of the race start with the people I trained with was special. How has RAW membership enhanced your life? It opened up a whole new circle of friends who all had a common interest. What have you valued most about your experiences with RAW? The camaraderie and support the group provided. Who is now a good friend that you might never have met without being a RAW member? Rick Fogle. I had actually met Rick once or twice back in 1984 through work, but it wasn't until we reconnected at RAW almost 20 years later that we became good friends. Who's the most unforgettable person you've encountered in your experiences with RAW? I met a lot of great people at RAW, so it's hard to pick one. Kat Sparks: Who invited you to join the group? Having just moved here from Massachusetts in 1997, I was on a run and carefully planning my route so as to not get lost. As I ran through Horseshoe Trails, Jeff Brown ran up beside me. We talked running for several miles. He told me about a group of runners trying to get a club started. As I parted to go home, he said "hey, if you're interested, several of us will be gathering in the parking lot by the lake after the run. We'll have beer and champagne. Just look for the white van." It was an odd suggestion, as it was only 7:30 in the morning. But something interested me about this group. I showed up....and I never left. What's your favorite RAW memory? My two boys, Matt and Josh, and their friend Nicole were raised in RAW. RAW was my village as my family did not live close by. I enjoyed reflecting on 20 years of RAW with them as all three talked about family and friendship. They all remember the first New Year's Eve run where it suddenly began snowing as we ran out the old year. The run turned into a gigantic snowball fight. How has RAW membership enhanced your life? RAW has definitely made me a better runner. I arrived with a small interest in running a marathon thinking I might be able to finish in about five hours. Today, I am happy to say I'm a little faster than a five hour marathon. But RAW is so much more than a collection of personal accomplishments. I've found a group of like-minded individuals who support each other in their quest to become better runners and better people. And, of course, I love the fact that someone is always up for a crazy adventure of some sort.

Fewer Than 20 Fun & Fascinating Facts about RAW By Gordon Kippola 1. Kelly "K2" Richards accomplished the Herculean labors of recalling, compiling, researching and fact-checking a grand total of 240 Fun and Fascinating Facts about RAW! Forget Hercules ... Wonder Woman lives in Grapevine, Texas! 2. Kudos to Kathryn Gleghorn and Kelly "K2" Richard for writing Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Celebrate 20 Years Running, a featured article in the June RRCA Magazine. 3. Uh oh, it's only #3, and I've already run out of original facts. K2 covered RAW's entire history! Wait, I know ... let's recap all twelve monthly Anniversary events. (Thank you to the FOOTPRINT writers who crafted the original event announcements, and who wrote the follow-up stories each month!) 4. The kickoff for our 20th Anniversary celebration was happy hour at Willhoites on July 20, attended by over 30 members. 5. A special ROGA (Run + Yoga) session was planned for August 20 at the clubhouse, but the event had to be re-scheduled due to stormy weather. 6. On September 20, our traditional Third Tuesday of the Month social run/walk at the Grapevine Craft Brewery transitioned into an anniversary celebration. Charter members, new members, soon-to-be members, and friends enjoyed snacks, beer, cake, a RAW Getting to Know You BINGO game, and prizes! 7. October 20 was two days before RAW's Double Trouble race, so we held a fun run starting and ending at the clubhouse. Members were able to preview the courses, or to get their run in early if they were volunteering for Saturday's race. 8. The 20th Anniversary Committee made special arrangements with six local businesses for "LGRAW's Main Street Wine Crawl." Fifty wine crawlers came out on November 20 to enjoy downtown Grapevine's Main Street wineries on a beautiful fall day. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1128090452830&format=html&print=true

9. Several RAW members braved the cold for the December 20th anniversary event, the Holiday Lights Morning Run/Walk. Members took a fun run down Main Street, Grapevine, enjoying the sights and sounds of Christmas. 10. January 20 was an opportunity to enjoy pre-race pasta before the next morning's Bold in the Cold race. About two dozen members gathered at Buca di Beppo for good food and great camaraderie. 11. On February 20 (which fell on President's Day), at a Wise Guy's Pizza happy hour, we honored all the members who've served as RAW club president since our founding. Kat Sparks proposed a toast, and we raised our glasses to these amazing men and women. 12. The March 20th Anniversary Celebration event was an evening when over 30 people came out to Trawick Pavilion to play the basketball game "PIG," cheer, eat pizza, and socialize. Alan Sivakumaran was our ultimate March Madness champion. 13. Our April 20th Anniversary event was so epic ... it began on April 20, and finished on April 22 (Earth Day)! Under the supervision of Kat Sparks and Jay Jones, and with the efforts of more than 30 volunteers in total, we added some beautiful planters and bird houses to the pergola behind our clubhouse. 14. May 20 was our Anniversary Gala at the Cowboys Golf Club, featuring many founding members, inspirational memories, RRCA President Mitchel Garner, and the amazing Alexi Pappas (our special guest speaker for the evening, who then joined us for a run at the clubhouse the next morning). If you weren't able to attend this time around, put us on your calendar for the 30th Anniversary Gala in 2027! 15. The final monthly 20th Anniversary event was held on June 20, in combination with our Third Tuesday of the Month social run/walk. About a dozen people ran in the 90 degree heat, before joining the festive crowd of approximately 50 members, family and friends. We also celebrated the City of Grapevine's proclaiming June 20 as Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Day. Want to see some photos of the event? Of course you do!

Water Duty Volunteers

Waterboy Reporter This is Texas [Editor's Note: great fact checking, WR!], and Texas is known for becoming somewhat warmish in the summertime. Can you imagine walking or running from the RAW clubhouse one Saturday or Sunday in July, August, or September ... and NOT having the opportunity to take a cool, replenishing sip of water or sports drink?! Fortunately, and thanks to our water duty volunteers, such a sun-parched, horrific, dystopian emergency situation will never materialize. Many thanks to everyone who volunteered for Water Duty in June, including Brad and Angie Hetisimer, Alan Sivakumaran, David DeFanti, Pam Truhn (two times!), Stacie Sauber and Randy Wolf, Mark Jennings, and Gordon Kippola.

An upside-down water jug is a universal distress signal. Help keep RAW's jugs right-side up and filled, saving us all from thirst!

The LGRAW board of directors recognizes and appreciates the effort made to get water and Gatorade out for our runners and walkers. There are plenty of slots coming up for this summer. Be sure to sign up before they're all taken. Look at how happy (and hydrated) you can make everyone ... just by volunteering!
