Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers June 2017 Dear Lake Grapevine What an exciting month this has been for RAW members! On May 20, RAW celebrated 20 years as a club with an evening Gala at Cowboys Golf Club. Mitchell Garner, President of Road Runners Club of America, joined us for our club run that morning from the clubhouse. It was exciting to hear him speak about his running experiences, and his path to becoming the RRCA President. He also paid tribute to several of our club members, praising our club for all the recognition and awards we've received over the years. At the Gala, several RAW members shared personal stories from their time with the club. Hearing about everyone's experiences made me feel that we belong to an organization that is much more than just a runners' and walkers' club. Our club has been a place where many can go to share lifechanging experiences and to build lifelong friendships. Our featured guest speaker was Alexi Pappas, a Greek American distance runner who shared her difficulties in reaching her goals as a runner. Her inspirational speech was very motivating to me and other RAW members. We were further inspired when Alexi came out to join us for our Sunday morning run on May 21. Heartfelt thanks to Michelle Liles who was the event coordinator for the 20th Anniversary Gala event, and to the entire committee who worked to make it a success. It's a night we'll remember for years to come. Even as the temperatures rose, RAW members kept on participating in local events and races. On May 20, several RAW members attended the Live, Love, Young Life 5K at Dragon Stadium in Southlake. The proceeds from that race went to their summer camp. On May 7, RAW volunteers attended the REI Force of Nature event at the Grapevine Craft Brewery, representing our club. Many were inspired by the panel of women who have embraced an outdoor lifestyle. The Third Tuesday of the Month social run at the Grapevine Craft Brewery, held on May 16, was another great success. About a dozen members came out for the short run, while braving some high evening temperatures. If you have not made it out for one of these events, I encourage you to join us on June 20, when we celebrate our final monthly 20th Anniversary event. It's a great opportunity to meet other club members and chat a little after the short run. If you are inspired to run a race with RAW, join us in June at one of our favorite local races. See RAW Off to the Races later in the newsletter for details. We have volunteer opportunities to help with the RAW Aid station for the WW Military Miles Half, 10K, and 5K Sunday June 11, 2017 in Irving, TX. Contact Joe Luccioni, or sign up on the refrigerator at the clubhouse. Remember to come out on the first Sunday each month to welcome new members to our club. We call it Newbie Short Stack Sunday! We encourage first time members to come out and join us for the morning run, and then celebrate with a short stack of pancakes afterwards. I look forward to seeing everyone at the lake! Gala Gratitude By Michelle Liles As usual, LGRAW Volunteers came through! The Gala Committee started planning almost a year before the event. I'm going to try to remember all of the many people who played a part in bringing this event together so beautifully. My apologies if I miss your name. Besides myself (who ended up leading the committee), our early planning, venue and food selection was done by David Smith, Tini Riviero, Pam Truhn, Dee Vidacak, David Ball, Belynda Warner, and Chris Morris. The beautiful handcrafted vases and votives were made by a group of ladies, and most of these same gals returned to help (along with our guy volunteers) with setup on the day of the event: Diane Ferguson, Christine Bassano, Diane Hernandez, Anne Barnwell, Danyah ArafatJohnson, Leana Sloan, Elizabeth Wedemeyer, Kat Sparks, Sakina Vidacak, Belynda Warner, Debbie Yatko, Kirsten Golly, Pam Truhn, Mike Bassano, Brad Liles, and David Ball. Leana, Diane and I "arranged" the flowers as professionally as we know how. Diane Hernandez, David Ball and Kat Sparks jumped in during the past couple of months and Michelle, Kat, and Danyah took on more significant tasks, including coordination, picking up any dropped balls, and agreeing to speak. Doug Keeffe put together a beautiful photo slideshow that I hope we can show at some our upcoming events and possibly post online. David Ball did all the graphic designs used in our advertisements and other items, including our drink tickets! Dave Aungst built a beautiful balloon display and functioned as the Gala Master of Ceremonies. Diane Hernandez found a super discounted photo booth allowing us to have some fun. Scott Perkins picked up and took https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1128047295829&format=html&print=true

care of the cake and assisted with whatever we needed on the night of the Gala.

RRCA President Mitch Garner, photo by David Ball Kathryn Gleghorn and Kelly Richards treated our guest speakers with LGRAW Texas hospitality, ensuring they were where they needed to be. This included bringing Brad and Dave: Balloon RRCA President Mitchell Garner and wife Ellen to the Construction Engineers! clubhouse on Saturday, and bringing GreekAmerican Olympic record holder Alexi Pappas to the clubhouse on Sunday, so that we were all able to enjoy their company. We thank our featured guest speakers for their warm words of encouragement to our club. The LGRAW speakers were awesome, sharing their heartfelt memories of our club. They included David Aungst, Kat Sparks, David Ball, Michelle Liles, Chris Barnwell, Jessica O'Neil Smith, Diane Hernandez, Joe Luccioni, and Ray Harris.

Olympian Alexi Pappas, photo by David Ball There were some "saves" on Gala night ... from Beth Brueggen "Womanning" the checkin the whole time allowing the rest of us to enjoy the event, to Gordon Jessica O'Neil Smith, photo by David Ball Kippola agreeing to serve as a lastminute amateur photographer, to Dee running out to his vehicle to get a better amplifier so we could all hear the speakers. I'm very thankful to all the RAW volunteers who made it such a fun and successful night!

Save The Date! The Grapevine City Council has declared June 20, 2017 as Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Day! The official proclamation will be made at the 7:30 p.m. June 6 city council meeting, scheduled as the first order of business after the invocation and the citizen comments sections. Some RAW members have expressed an interest in attending the meeting, so come on out if you'd like to watch this special occasion in person!

20th Anniversary June Event The final installment of RAW's yearlong 20th Anniversary Celebration is Tuesday, June 20. The date coincides with our regular Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run at the Grapevine Craft Brewery, but the special event following our run/walk (or you can make a purely social appearance!) will be anything but "regular!" Join us for an evening of fun, camaraderie and treats! The outside seating area is kid (and dog!) friendly, so bring along the whole crew! For further details, keep an eye on the LGRAW Facebook page, and our website. Let us know you're coming, RSVP on the Facebook event.

us. Here is what they had to say. Joe and Evelyn Luccioni: Our first exposure to the club was in June or July of 1997. While running on the track at the old Rec center, we spotted a handout announcing a meeting at the bleachers of the Soft Ball fields where they were recruiting members to this new running club. That's where we met Richard Craft. We were immediately impressed with his vision for the running club. At that point we don't think the club had a name yet, but it wasn't long until Joe Luccioni, photo by David Ball somebody came up with the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers club, which one of the members immediately shortened to "RAW." Over twenty years, many things change but the constant that has made our relocation to Texas so easy is the friends, and they will be our friends for life. A very special friend, in spite of his being Canadian, is Gary Howsam who whenever I need help with anything he has been there. We have been there for him when he had his surgeries, and it's a small payback for all he has done for us. Coming from Da Bronx and having run most of our lives, we were pleasantly surprised at how much these country boys and gals knew about running. We have run many races trail and roads, our favorite Palo Duro Canyon, Grasslands, Muenster, the Haltom City Stampede and the Oklahoma City Marathon. We also have helped out at aid stations. I can't believe that this year it will be twenty years volunteering at the Dallas Marathon. We, as a club, have given back to the sport that we love by volunteering at races and events. I'm so proud of our members. There's one key bit of information I [Joe] forgot to mention at the 20th Anniversary Gala. As a result of our 2002 Protectors of Freedom 5K race held at the Texas Motor Speedway on August 31, 2002, the club donated $11,500 to the Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation. This kickstarted their fundraising efforts to raise monies for the children of the 343 Firefighters and the 71 Law Enforcement Officers who perished on 9/11, to date they have given out 158 scholarships totaling $4,600,000. Jack Hase: In 1997, the club rented a bus to go down to White Rock [Marathon] together. I had been running by myself for 5 or 6 years. After running with the club less than 6 months, I dropped 10 minutes from my marathon time and qualified for Boston. When the aid station was done, the bus picked up the runners, and I got to share my accomplishment with the club. Dave Aungst: What's your favorite RAW memory? Probably the Grasslands Half Marathon about 1012 years ago. It was a rainy, miserable day. Kat Sparks, Jack Green and I ran together, and all of us set PWs (personal worsts) that I'm sure still stand to this day! Who's the most unforgettable person you've encountered in your experiences with RAW? Probably have to be Richard Craft His focus, vision and enthusiasm were catching. That SOB also introduced me to cigar smoking about 15 years ago on his back patio! Have you had a RAW nickname bestowed upon you? If so, what's the story behind the nickname? Do you like it? Hate it? From 19932006, I made quite a few trips to Asia (mostly Japan). There are several tshirts at the clubhouse that will attest to this. Our local office was in Yokohama, hence the nickname 'Yokohama Dave'. It's always been rather flattering to have a nickname bestowed on me. Ricardo Roberto: Richard Craft invited me to join RAW. I had just recently arrived in North Texas after years overseas. He was working a booth at Main Street Days or some other big Grapevine event, and it turned out we were neighbors. It rained at the first RAW organizational meeting that I attended. We were few maybe six people and we just hid under the hatch of Ileana's (Richard's wife) minivan and decided to head home rather than run when we were done. My club name is "Tony." Susan Simon gave me that name. She was one of the first board members, and they were running through the list of members when someone mentioned my name. Mary said she didn't know who I was until someone described me. Her response was, https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1128047295829&format=html&print=true

"He looks like a Tony to me." The funniest part of my alias was that another member, Tom Byno, thought my real name was Tony. His nephew lives next door. Tom kept asking about his neighbor Tony. My neighbor finally said, "Stop asking me that I do NOT have any neighbors named TONY!" For years, I have run at 6 a.m. with a small, sometimes changing group of people whose numbers typically include Kelly Richards, Jack Hase, Debbie Yatko and Kristine Hinojos. You get to know people well when you run double digit miles once a week. We share our entire lives. I mentioned that my daughter Mireya was choosing colleges. K2 said, "Now I feel old I remember when your wife was PREGNANT with Mireya!" RAW miles are filled with life thousands of miles of lives well spent. Catch the July Footprint for the concluding collection of RAW Charter Member Memories!

Water Duty Volunteers Special Alexi Edition!

Waterboy Reporter Alexi Pappas (Olympian, filmmaker, poet, artist, Gala guest speaker, and undeniably splendid human being) ran with RAW on Sunday, May 21 ... and the most important thing that happened is her drinking from containers prepositioned (early that morning) by a water duty volunteer who still insists on the anonymous name of Hydration Facilitator (HF). HF proudly claims this moment (memorialized in the photograph to the right) as the pinnacle of his existence! Alexi prudently refused to answer questions from either HF or WR, but you can view more pictures of her visit after you read the next few important paragraphs! Thank you to the volunteers who have set water and Gatorade out on the course EVERY Saturday and Sunday! Without your kindness, there would be a LOT of thirsty Alexi Pappas, photo by WR, runners and walkers on the course. hydration facilitated by HF Many thanks to everyone who volunteered for Water Duty in May, including "Major Mike" Eccleston, Sakina and Dubravko Vidacak (2 times), Joe Luccioni, Stacie Sauber and Randy Wolf, Caleb and Shelly Pollock, Gordon Kippola, and Ken Merte. The LGRAW board of directors recognizes and appreciates the effort made to get water and Gatorade out for our runners and walkers. There are plenty of slots coming up for this summer. Be sure to sign up before they're all taken!

20 Fun & Fascinating Facts about RAW By Kelly "K2" Richards 1. At the 1997 Main Street Days 10K, Richard Craft, the founder and first president of RAW, carried a clipboard to gather names and phone numbers of people who might be interested in the concept of a running club. 2. The club's original webpage was found at RunnersAndWalkers.com. It was replaced by lgraw.com in the fall of 2012. 3. It's a club practice to conduct monthly board meetings, most of which are held at the clubhouse. Exceptions are made during particularly cold weather, when the meeting is usually moved to a board member's home. 4. For many years, the 4th of July picnic and annual meeting started with a softball game. This event probably best highlighted why most RAW members gravitated to running as their sport of choice! 5. A monthly Friday night Happy Hour gathering was established shortly after the club was formed. Around two years later, the Friday HH was replaced with Saturday Night Live (SNL) a monthly dinner at a local restaurant. Members continued enjoying SNL for approximately 15 years. 6. When the club first started, the water stop was set up in various locations, including the front yard of a friendly family who lived on the course just past the threemile mark. The current stands at the first and second water stops were constructed in 1998. 7. "RAW Around the World" has described different things over the years. It has meant wearing RAWear somewhere (usually outside of Texas), then taking and sharing a photo. It has been a recurring article in the FOOTPRINT about the running community and races in different cities around the world. It has been a map at the clubhouse where members place a pin in cities where they have raced in (in the USA), or have gone for a run (outside the USA). 8. Over the years, many organizations have received donations from RAW as beneficiaries of a race, https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1128047295829&format=html&print=true

or as part of our commitment to promoting running as a healthy lifestyle for the whole family. A few of the organizations RAW has supported are: GRACE, RRCA's Kids Run the Nation Grant Fund, Special Olympics Texas, Camp IThonkaChi (burn camp), many dog rescue organizations (beneficiaries of Hound Dog Hustle) and Grapevine Parks & Rec. 9. Charter member Chris Rehyer still has his original RAW membership card from 1997! 10. In 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009, RAW recognized the male and female members with the most miles logged at the clubhouse. Only the records from 2008 listed the number of miles walked and run. 2005 2006 2008 2009 Most Miles Most Miles Walked Most Miles Walked Most Miles Walked Walked: Female: Tia Female: Linda Bradford Female: Tia Metzger Metzger (302.75 miles) Lorraine Wessels Most Miles Run: Most Miles Walked Most Miles Walked Most Miles Walked Jack Hase Male: Joe Luccioni Male: Joe Luccioni Male: Gary Howsam (405.5 miles) Most Miles Run Most Miles Run Most Miles Run Female: Kelly "K2" Female: Kelly "K2" Female: Richards Richards (883.5 miles) Stacie Sauber Most Miles Run Most Miles Run Male: Most Miles Run Male: Male: Thomas Steven "Dog Dude" David Ball "TO" Okazaki Rush and his dog Cooper (713.7 miles) 11. On July 4, 2006, RAW held a "fun" run called 60 Minutes to Freedom. The run was held at the Carroll Middle School track, with the objective to run as far as you could in 60 minutes. Troy Pruett won with 9.26 miles, barely edging out Mindi Rice who ran 9.12 miles. Henry Galpin directed and participated in the run. 12. The current RAW membership includes at least five married couples who met at the club. 13. The FOOTPRINT used to have a regular column called Go Green RAW: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: tips on how to be "green" while at the clubhouse. It was originally penned by K2, and then by Michelle (Arie) Williams. 14. In 2013, and again in 2015, RAW celebrated National Running Day (now called Global Running Day) with morning and evening runs followed by light refreshments, raffle prizes, and more. Kathryn Gleghorn and K2 organized the events both years. 15. In June 2013, Ryan and Randa Foster became parents to Lilian and McKayla, the second set of twins born to RAW members. Lilian and McKayla are big sisters to Kassidy, who was born in May 2016. 16. Anyone may sit in the rocking chair at the clubhouse, but be prepared to give it up to anyone whose name is engraved in it. To have your name added to the chair, turn 70! Don't expect to see 80 yearold Manny Koosha sitting in a rocking chair. He's busy doing long runs in training for the multiple marathons he still runs every year! 17. In the years that RAW recognized water duty volunteers, Rick Sanford, Thomas "TO" Okazaki, Brad Liles, Brad Pearson, Gary Howsam, and Dubravko and Sakina Vidacak were the members who volunteered the most times in a year. 18. Rainforest Cafe Grapevine Mills is the longest ongoing sponsor of RAW's annual races. Foot and Ankle Associates of North Texas is another longtime sponsor of RAW events. Taqueria Burritos Locos and Metro Mobile Electronics are also multiyear race sponsors. BreadHaus has supported RAW for many years by donating bread to our races. Sunstone Fit is another fabulous RAW supporter, often providing giveaways for volunteers, and free yoga classes for any RAW member the first Sunday of every month. 19. The current RAW membership includes 17 charter members. Having grown up as a member, Kirsten (Bush) Mast now has her own family membership, making her children third generation RAW members! Some mornings you'll see all three Bush generations out on the course John in the Grapevine Volunteer in Police Service vehicle, and Kirsten and Caleb running. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1128047295829&format=html&print=true

RAW 20th Anniversary Gala Bonus Content

RAW 20th Anniversary Poem (Cut for time's sake on the evening of the Gala) by Gordon Kippola Twenty years are quite a few to ambulate the way we do. Our ninetyseven club debut brings Richard Craft his founding due. More people joined, our numbers grew: Lake Grapevine running, walking crew. Our left foot logo wears no shoe. Display a right foot? That's taboo! From this old newbie's point of view, I'm only here to race K2. She kicks my butt! It's sad but true, I'm slower than Leana, too. I'll rhyme a list quite incomplete of members having magic feet. Chris Morris laughs while racing his Halfs. Monica Waite never finishes late. Susan and Ray run the trails twice a day. The Barnwells and Liles stride quickly for miles. Rolling home like welloiled bikes are Jersey, Major ... heck, all the Mikes. For running skills to make you blush, see Okazaki, Pollock, Rush. Drum, Kat, Ribs, Ken, Jeff, Kristine ... each of them a swift machine. Gleghorns, Gollys, Smiths ... Smiths ... Smith ... such awesome folks to hang out with. Showing new members the way they should go ... John, Laura, Sakina, D, Shantel, and Joe Debb(y)ie, Liz, Jesse, Dave, Manny, and Jack ... meet them just once, and you're sure to come back. All our Alans, each Diane, our weekend walkers, those who plan an ultratriplemegamaximonstermarathon, everyone who joins with RAW can ... sip coffee or a colder brew at baitshop clubhouse when we're through. In floods or Texas August blue, our friendships are the constant glue that bless each day we rendezvous. Tonight, let's all get RAW tattoos! I'm privileged to run with you. My poem's done. I'm tearing up. Adieu!
