Mennonites are an ethnic and religious group born in Switzerland during the Protestant Reformation, in the 16th century. By 1922, the Mexican government, led by Álvaro Obregón, had welcomed some 3,000 members of the Mennonite community, and they settled in the state of Chihuahua. The Mexican Mennonite population, of mostly German origin, is primarily engaged in agricultural and livestock work and they practice a simple lifestyle, removed from the technology common to modern

life Silent Light, by Carlos Reygadas, takes place in a Mennonite community near Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, and is spoken in Plautdietsch (Mennonite Low German), which is the Germanic dialect used by this religious congregation. The film, in the style of a documentary, records the work, routine, and customs of this colony in northern Mexico. The plot of the film focuses on the burden of guilt carried by Johan (Cornelio Wall), a father of seven, married to Esther (Miriam Toews), who has fallen in love with another member of their community. For two years, Johan has a passionate affair with Marianne (Maria PanKratz) and, though stoic, Esther knows this. On an argumentative level, without developing a religious film, Reygadas approaches guilt, the conflict of faith and human desire, with delicate grace. Although, for some, it may be a long and cold feature film, its director offers a respectful interpretation of a society rooted in Christian traditions and values.
