FROM THE

I LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THE TIN MAN ON THE

Wizard of Oz before Dorothy oils him up as I make my way to the Keurig machine in the mornings. Just as rust immobilized his hinges, arthritis is taking its toll on my creaky, achy joints. Though I’m not proud to admit it, as my arthritis symptoms worsened, I found myself comparing myself to others quite a bit, lamenting that I could no longer do things I saw others my age doing seemingly with ease. In fact, I became so focused on the negatives that I couldn’t see anything good around me at all. Not only did I wish I had the beautiful hands of the woman next to me in line at the grocery or the scar-free legs of the lady playing volley ball on the beach, the comparisons snowballed until every which way I turned there was someone with something better than me. A bigger bank account. Better behaved dogs. A svelte body that fits into a pair of skinny jeans. Beautiful hair that doesn’t defy the laws of gravity. A nicer mother-in-law. Though you’ve probably already guessed, the comparisons didn’t help my arthritis. They also didn’t get me a nicer mother-in-law. In fact they were nothing but a colossal waste of time and energy because regardless of how much money I make, there will always be someone with more. No matter if my hair suddenly decides it will indeed adhere to scientific certainties and grow into a magnificent mane, there will always be someone with even better locks. And even if my body were arthritis free, there would always be someone younger and healthier for me to compare myself to.

Lake Norman Woman @LKNWomanMag @LKNWomanNC LakeNormanWoman.com

Though I took the long way around the barn, I eventually realized that the key to my happiness and well-being isn’t trying to get what others have—it’s being thankful for my own journey and the many blessings that are mine to enjoy along my way. Sure, jars are now my arch-nemesis and custom insoles are my new best friend, but the joys in my life far outweigh the aches and pains. Of course I am thankful for the biggies: family and friends; love and health. But there’s little things, too, that cause my cup to runneth over: good hair days (they happen!); the smile on my husband’s face when he discovers a new favorite craft beer; a sloppy, on-the-lips lick from my pups; the smell of a bookstore; tan lines; taking off my bra at the end of the day; discussing a good book with my sons; whip cream squirted right out of the can into my mouth; the smell of that coffee I mentioned. Oh, and artificial joints…how could I forget those? Thanks to that advanced technology, I know that no matter what these creaky body parts of mine decide to do, I can keep on keeping on. My keeping on might involve doing the Tin Man Shuffle through the house to get to my morning cup of joe, but you can bet I’ll be counting my blessings every waddle and wobble DANA JORDAN along the way way. w PUBLISHER

a Soul-to-Sole

Journey of Success SUCCE S S IS A MULT IFACE T E D T E R M O F ACH IE VE M E N T.

Success might be defined as notoriety, a dollar amount, or simply a Gold Star for the day. I view “success” differently; there is not a tangible unit of measure. But I have found that all successes, no matter the definitions, have twists and turns, valleys and peaks, tears of frustration, and great celebrations. It is lined with gratitude for your “herd” – family, friends, partners, co-workers, sponsors, even horses! A support system which allows for a balance between adventure, emotions, hard work, dedication, commitment, relaxation, and love. It seems surreal to have transformed my childhood passion for horses into an efficacious business focused on ground-based counseling and wellness with horses. To watch my team grow and shift in new dimensions is thrilling.

Katie Stankiewicz

SOUL TO SOLE CONNECTION / WILLOW EQUINE

A new chapter for Willow Equine emerged in 2017 … truly a message from God. We would continue our work providing counseling and wellness with horses focused on healing from trauma, but greater success would come with our focus on the population we so proudly serve—America’s veterans, first responders, and their families. And because of the unwavering support and donations from our community, it is provided at no cost. Service and trauma affect the entire family differently; healing looks and feels different, too. The common thread is the conscious commitment to heal. We create a non-judgmental space for clients to feel safe and supported even at their lowest points. The horses truly see and hear the person standing with them even when no words are spoken. They offer safe reflection and compelling feedback for fears and anxieties. Horses take what is held inside and translate it into tangible experiences. This allows for insightful understanding, new perspectives, and deep healing. Soul to Sole Connection became the impetus for change. A change in how society perceives mental health, especially for the military. We have changed the lives of countless local veterans and have witnessed individuals heal their wounds and rediscover who they truly are. Often, they have felt lost in the trauma, yet given time and support, clients are able to uncover, release, grow, and reconnect. Everyone can set an intention, move forward, and succeed! w

Dance Like Nobody’s Watching The healing power of music is undeniable, and it is particularly important for our elderly population. Here are some ways music makes a difference:

Experts agree that pets excel as therapeutic agents, and dogs in particular are an antidote to depression. Studies have shown that dogs decrease both blood pressure and stress levels and improve overall mood and wellbeing. “My dog brings a lot of joy to seniors,” explains Vickie Blair, who volunteers with her dog, Driver, at the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. “What’s more, dog visits can enhance cognitive and emotional processes ... therapy dogs can be of great comfort for the entire family, especially if someone can no longer take care of a pet at home.” The Alliance of Therapy Dogs brings their pups to you— including but not limited to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, mental health institutions, schools, hospitals, college campuses, and to private homes as well. “When Driver and I visit patients,” Vickie adds, “it helps break up daily boredom (for everyone!) and stimulates the mind in dramatic ways ... we love to see the patients’ smiles and how they light up when we arrive ... you can tell it makes a huge difference in their day, and that is priceless!” For information on how you can help, email Vickie Blair at vblair2@yahoo.com or visit www.therapydogs.com.

Aging Gracefully According to Social Security actuarial tables, if you’re healthy enough to reach age 70 today, life expectancy is in the

LATE

80s

(and older for women).

With more and more seniors being cared for by family, only about three percent are in nursing homes or other care facilities; and seniors are not only living longer, but they are living in health and happiness. A study at Harvard showed that the majority of seniors describe their life in positive terms using words such as “peace, health, happiness, and contentment.”

Mental Health Notes While depression and anxiety are the most common complaints among seniors, these mental health challenges are NOT a normal part of aging. Often it is due to isolation, medications, changes in living situations, and the simple fact that resources are not available to so many of our seniors. As a result, health issues can go undiagnosed and do not get proper treatment. For helpful information on senior mental health, visit the National Council On Aging at www.ncoa.org.

FORGETFULNESS CAN BE A

normal part of aging. We all have forgotten where we parked the car or have occasionally missed a doctor’s appointment. However, serious memory problems may signal something more worrisome than normal age-related changes — Alzheimer’s disease.

“If Alzheimer’s disease is detected early,” explains Dr. Maria Tletee of Iredell Internal Medicine, “it will prompt medical intervention and initiation of treatments that can effectively slow down the disease’s progression. Additionally, it aids patients and their families in making essential adjustments to sustain a higher quality of life for an extended period.”

Alzheimer’s is an irreversible, degenerative brain disorder that primarily impacts memory, cognition, and behavior. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and that number is expected to grow to nearly 13 million by 2050.

Recognizing the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease can be challenging because everyone experiences some degree of memory loss as they age, but there are some distinctions. Below, Dr. Tletee lists some of the most common early signs of Alzheimer’s, as well as examples of normal age-related forgetfulness:

lakenormanw oman.com

1

Memory Loss

Memory loss, like frequent forgetfulness, especially regarding recent events, is one of the most noticeable early symptoms of Alzheimer’s. For instance, someone might struggle to recall where they placed their keys or the names of familiar people. NORMAL AGE-RELATED CHANGES: Occasional forgetfulness of names or appointments but remembering them later.

Difficulty with planning and problem-solving

Everyday problem-solving, such as managing finances or following a recipe, becomes more challenging. NORMAL AGE-RELATED CHANGES: Occasional errors in managing finances but are still able to handle bills effectively.

DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.

on ALWAYS LOVING THE GREAT OUTDOORS I grew up as one of six kids in Dearborn, Michigan. With so many of us, my parents wisely taught us the joy of outdoor play. When I majored in parks and recreation administration at Central Michigan University, I didn’t consciously understand how important recreation and leisure are to a full, healthy, and happy life; it just seemed like a fun profession. As it turns out, I was right! I also went back later in life to receive my master’s degree in recreation and leisure services administration from Florida State University. on MUCH-NEEDED SOLO TIME It’s probably no surprise that as a parks and recreation director, my favorite place to play is in the dirt. There’s nothing like an early morning stroll around the yard with a hot cup of coffee in hand, dreaming of how to make our little corner of the world more beautiful. I also enjoy time on my Peloton, running or walking on the local golf course at dawn, thrifting at area shops, and reading fiction about female characters who triumph over something and end up strong and happy.

on FEELING PROUD WITH WHAT SHE’S PLANTED I am proud of starting the Town’s Public Arts Committee. I believe that public art is one of the strongest contributors to a vibrant community, and I am excited about Mooresville’s commitment to growing this program. I want art all over town that surprises and delights our residents and visitors. I am equally enthusiastic about our new Arts & Events Division. The staff has done an incredible job in their first year providing large-scale special events to celebrate the town’s 150th anniversary. I am eager to grow our events to include art fairs, more festivals, and more concerts. These occasions contribute to our town’s economic development and provide a higher quality of life for our residents … and they’re just plain fun! on THE GUY WHO OWNS HER HEART My husband, Dan, is my life’s joy. He serves as my anchor, my sounding board, my dream catcher, and my delight in coming home each evening. We learned early on that the secret to a great marriage consists of only two things: be kind and have fun. We adopted that belief—it became our culture, and it has led to the happiest marriage two people could ever dream of having. on CULTIVATING THE GOOD STUFF I am absolutely determined to find joy and gratitude in each day. I am exceptionally fortunate to share my life with people who make me feel loved, to live in a happy home, and to work with a kind, funny, and dedicated work team. I have money in the bank, food on the table, and a body that has taken care of me so far. Joy and Gratitude … Every. Single. Day. w WRITER Lindsay Martell PHOTOGRAPHER Chelsea Bren

journey towards shedding unwanted pounds.

Semaglutide, an obesity medication administered through injections, has shown promise when coupled with a balanced diet and regular

exercise. In order to help you make informed

decisions about its potential benefits for your weight-loss goals, here are seven frequently asked questions we get from our patients:

LKN EXPERT

Medical Director Dr. Chris DiOrio is an expert in the field of Bariatric & Weight Management. He was one of the first physicians to bring this type of practice to patients in North Carolina. You can connect with Dr. DiOrio and his team at www.physiciansplan.com.

If you have received a prescription for semaglutide, it’s important to know that it is a weekly injection. It is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) or intramuscularly (into a muscle). Depending on your case, they may recommend a dosage adjustment after a certain period. What are the possible side

2 effects of semaglutide?

Semaglutide can cause mild to moderate side effects, such as injection site reactions, nausea, constipation, and headaches. Less common but more serious potential side effects include an increased risk of pancreatitis and increased heart rate and blood pressure. What other lifestyle

3 changes should I make while taking semaglutide?

It’s important to make some lifestyle changes in addition to taking the medication to achieve desired results from semaglutide. Changes like eating a healthy, balanced diet and getting regular physical activity will accelerate your weight loss journey. Food diaries can help you stay on top of your nutrition goals and ensure that you’re making progress toward your weightloss goals.

Semaglutide is a newer medication for weight loss that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2020. It acts as an appetite suppressant, which means it can help you feel fuller longer. Unlike some weight-loss medications, semaglutide is taken only once weekly and can help you achieve long-term weight loss. long will it take to 5 How see results?

The amount of time it takes to see results from semaglutide can vary depending on the individual, but you may begin to notice positive changes within a few weeks. It’s important to remember that semaglutide is not a quick fix and should be used with proper diet and exercise for the best results. Does my medical history

6 or any existing conditions disqualify me from taking semaglutide?

Semaglutide is not suitable for everyone, and certain medical conditions can be a contraindication to taking this medication. These include type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and renal impairment. It’s important to discuss your medical history with your doctor before starting any new medication so they can assess your suitability for semaglutide. Can I take other

Guess what? When you fill someone’s bucket, you fill your own bucket too. And we don’t need the gratitude month of November to make it so. All day every day we are either filling up or dipping into not only our own buckets, but those of others. “I realized fairly early in life how important it is to have a positive mindset and to help people whenever you can,” says Heather Lewis Kline, owner and operator of Consign on a Dime and Showplace 28 in Cornelius. “A simple smile or positive affirmation can drastically change someone’s day. As crazy as life can be, there is one thing we know for certain: kindness and love are vital to survival.”

Lincolnton, North Carolina, and developed a strong sense of community there. Being raised in the small rural setting, Heather’s childhood experiences are what you’d expect from a close-knit town where family are friends and friends are family— Friday Night Lights; summer bonfires; Christmas adorned with every heart-warming tradition you can imagine. “My parents also grew up in Lincolnton,” Heather explains, “so tradition, family, friends, and community run deep for us. My mother was a schoolteacher, and my father was a mailman. For over 30 years he was able to enjoy

lunch with his mother at the house he grew up in because their home was on his postal route.” After high school, Heather attended Appalachian State University and majored in business and marketing education with a concentration in child psychology. She also met her husband, Andrew, while in college and they married shortly after graduation. “Boone is an amazing place,” she smiles, “and the beauty of the high country is still to this day ingrained in my heart and soul. Andrew grew up in Boone, so we feel the most at peace when we are back on the mountain.”

The couple moved to Cornelius in 2006 when Heather began her teaching career at Lake Norman High School. They have two children—Hudson, 14, and Hampton who is 10. When her children were born, Heather decided to take some time off work but returned to a smaller setting at Community in Christ Preschool (CIC). “My years at CIC filled a place in my heart that I missed with teaching.

Our faith has taught us that if we focus on the good in each day, life will unveil many opportunities to share the good with others."

My husband was pushing 10 years in a corporate setting, and I began to realize that we were missing out on a lot of critical moments in the boys’ lives. We began to brainstorm on how we could both alter our careers to spend more time together as a family.” Having spent a few years selling real estate, they both fell in love with remodeling—from renovating their own house to flipping vacation homes, they were excited and passionate about the revitalization process. After much consideration and prayer, they decided to make an offer on a local consignment store. “I knew I had a lot to learn about the furniture industry and was up for the challenge,” Heather recalls. “Thankfully the staff and team at Consign on a Dime and Showplace 28 welcomed

me with open arms and have allowed me to learn a tremendous amount since acquiring the businesses. I have been able to reconnect with our community and refocus on the business and marketing aspects … with a splash of design and color added in! Our entire team loves to talk with our clients (who are family to us!) and really get to know them on a personal level. From casual chats to in-depth conversations regarding downsizing, full relocations, and additions, we get to know each and every one of them. We also own Champions Sports Performance in Cornelius which Andrew manages, and we are fully enjoying our roles as business owners.” Leaning on their faith has led Heather and her family through many difficult times, but they

focus on what they feel God is asking them to do at the moment. Firmly believing that each season in life will be guided by her faith and gratitude, Heather understands the value in allowing yourself to slow down enough to listen. “Our faith has taught us that if we focus on the good in each day, life will unveil many opportunities to share the good with others. My children’s elementary school would always use the term “Bucket Filler” and we have kept that motto as they have grown. We have a chance during our lifetime to impact others. We can choose how to do this … either positively or negatively. So let’s be a ‘Bucket Filler’ to as many people as possible.” w lakenormanw oman.com

A Balancing Act

Starr Miller Founder and Principal, StarrMiller Interior Design Allied ASID, IDS, CAPS

MY MOM PRE PA RE D FOR T HE HOL IDAYS

like Patton going to war. The silver was polished; the linens were ironed and folded. The flowers were perfect, and the food was incredible ... she did take eight years of cooking classes after all. My brother would then sit at the Thanksgiving table and rock back and forth on the back legs of our Queen Anne dining chairs. That is when things would start to go downhill. Thank goodness the chairs were extremely well made and there was never a crash. Everyone survived. When Tom and I were choosing chairs 30+ years ago, that vision came to mind, and we chose some sturdy chairs. We still have them today. Selecting the perfect dining chair may seem like a straightforward task, but it's essential to consider various factors to ensure that your dining area is both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Here are my suggestions to consider when choosing dining chairs:

STYLE

Are you looking for a traditional, modern, rustic, or eclectic look? Knowing your style will help you narrow down your choices and make the decision-making process much easier.

YOUR DINING TABLE

The dining chairs should complement your dining table. If you have a large, rectangular table, you may want to opt for dining chairs with a more substantial presence. A round or smaller table might look best with slimmer, space-saving chairs.

MATERIALS

Dining chairs come in a variety of materials, each with their own unique characteristics. Common materials for dining chairs include wood, metal, and upholstered options each with their own unique qualities.

COMFORT Comfort is a paramount

consideration when choosing dining chairs. You and your guests will spend considerable time sitting in these chairs. Unlike my Mother’s Queen Anne chairs with uncomfortable backs, look for chairs with ergonomic designs that provide adequate lumbar support. Padded seats and backrests can significantly enhance comfort. Consider the chair's height and width to ensure it accommodates different body sizes comfortably.

MAINTENANCE

Consider the ease of maintenance and cleaning when choosing dining chairs. Chairs with materials that are easy to wipe clean may be a better choice.

Our resident home-design expert, Starr Miller, has garnered local and national acclaim with more than 30 industry honors. An alumnus of the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York, Starr has built a strong following as the principal of her sought-after design firm, located in Cornelius, NC.

COLOR AND FINISH

The color and finish of your dining chairs should harmonize with the overall color scheme of your dining area. Neutral colors like white, black, or gray are versatile choices that can complement a wide range of decor styles. If you prefer more vibrancy, consider adding chairs in bold or contrasting colors to create a statement piece in your dining space.

She feels the composition of a space must originate with the client’s unique perspective. Along with that perspective she brings together her team’s collaboration, design skills and refined processes in a way which results in truly captivating homes for her clients.

BUDGET

Your budget plays a significant role in determining the dining chairs you can afford. Balance your budget with the quality and durability of the chairs. Investing in high-quality chairs can be a wise decision in the long run, as they will withstand the test of time.

StarrMiller Interior Design specializes in full-service interior design projects.

Choosing the perfect dining chair is a task that combines style, comfort, and practicality. Take your time to explore options. With the right dining chairs, you can transform your dining area into a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing space that reflects your unique style. And hopefully, they will be sturdy enough to weather the use of a rambunctious teenager. w lakenormanw oman.com

WHEN A DOOR CLOSES, A WINDOW OPENS …

Is Your Home Ready for Cold Weather? T H E H O L I DAY S A R E H E R E ushering in the festive décor

indicative of this time of year. Front doors and windows are transforming to welcome friends and family, but they may be greeting some unwelcome guests—such as cold air, rain, and rot! As you gear up for all the decorations and the change in the weather, it’s the perfect time to think about updating your front doors and replacing old, drafty, or rotten windows. Here is what’s new on popular front entries, hardware updates, and window replacement solutions to turn up the curb appeal and get your home ready for cooler weather … and the holidays!

Front Entries New front entry doors and upfits are in high demand—there’s no better way to improve curb appeal and make a statement than by replacing or updating your front door. Traditional styles like raised panel front doors are in keeping with many homes’ architectural features, and as fiberglass and synthetic product prices increase, our clients are upgrading to beautiful stain grade wood species, like Mahogany or Knotty Alder.

New Hardware

Changing old, outdated, or worn hardware is a great way to dress up your front door. In addition to locksets, you can add mail slots, kickplates, street numbers, and flush bolts to really make an impact with the finishing touches. We offer hardware options in every popular color and style including electronic deadbolts that will integrate with your alarm system and can be locked and unlocked by keypad and smartphone. LKN EXPERT

Replacement Windows

Replacing windows is never fun, but neither is paying ridiculous energy bills, dealing with water leaks, or the potential for greater damage by ignoring a small issue. Most people don’t think about updating their windows until it’s too late, and that’s usually when we get the call, and a lot of times we hear it’s because they thought vinyl was the only replacement window option. In some cases, vinyl windows are a viable solution, but when we see existing wooden windows in a home, we prefer the warmth and detail of wood replacements. In addition to all wood, we carry vinyl and aluminum clad wood options, and CPVC windows that look and feel like wood.

that's what

HE said

spoiler alert:

MEN AND WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT. Ok, so maybe that fact didn’t really surprise you. After all, it’s been a few decades since John Gray popularized the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. And as much as we love sharing women’s stories, we decided it was time to lend the Martians of LKN our ear, too. This month we share the perspectives of Dr. Tyler Wurmlinger of Cosmetic Dentistry of the Carolinas.

WORKING IT OUT

SAVING SMILES

I don’t have a ton of free time, but I always carve out time for exercise. Whether it is running or lifting weights, I enjoy staying active. My other passion is travel. It can be hard with a busy schedule, but my wife, Isabel, and I try to do as much as we can. My favorite destination (thus far!) is Santorini, Greece. It’s absolutely beautiful!

I grew up in Lexington, Michigan. I knew I wanted to be a cosmetic dentist from a young age. I had a traumatic accident in middle school that significantly affected my confidence. At the time, the dentist who treated me really inspired me to pursue a career in dentistry. He encouraged me to follow a path that would help people who are insecure about the appearance of their teeth. I will never forget the difference he made in my life. In my 10 plus years as a dentist, I’ve come to understand how important it is to develop trusting relationships with people – patients and family alike.

A GREATER PURPOSE

DR. TYLER WURMLINGER,

COS ME TIC DE N T IST R Y O F T H E CA R O L IN A S

When I’m having a less-thangreat day, the thing that keeps me going is the people who depend on me. I know I have a purpose outside of myself. I know that my hard day doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. I’m so blessed to be doing what I love every single day. On challenging days, I remind myself of that … gratitude is key.

WORDS TO LIVE BY

CALL OF DUTY

I was an officer in the U.S. Navy for four years—from 2011 to 2015. The Navy taught me discipline and teamwork to achieve a common goal. This has been instrumental and is quite vital in running a successful practice. I’m incredibly proud of my dedication to dentistry. I’ve even broadened my skillset to include continuing education courses, which is so important in today’s world. Recently, I completed a course on dental implants, and I am looking forward to expanding my practice to help an even broader scope of patients.

My favorite quote is from Albert Einstein: “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” It speaks to me because I’m constantly striving to serve my patients in the best possible ways and to be the best version of myself. I love my work, and I love coming home to my wife and our two furbabies, Bella and Vlad. They are always so full of joy and light. I’m a lucky guy. w

SUCCESS STORY

JENNIFER FOSTER

F O R J E N N I F E R F O S T E R A N D B A R R I E R OJ A H N , co-owners of Foster Rojahn Premier

Properties, becoming friends and business partners is a success story that mixes a bit of serendipity with a lot of hard work, passion, and an unquenchable desire to help others.

“I realize most people cringe when they hear HOA,” she continues, “but I loved it. It taught me about running a business, financial management/ budgeting, and working with people from all walks of life.” Jennifer’s story is remarkably similar in that after moving to Charlotte with her family, she was offered a job in the apartment complex where they were living. “The perks were great,” Jennifer smiles, “including free rent. I loved helping people find their new home and moved up the property management ladder fairly quickly. I spent the next nine years managing high-end apartment communities.”

Barrie Rojahn & Jennifer Foster

B

FOSTER ROJAHN PREMIER PROPERTIES

Barrie was at a career crossroads after a year in the banking industry when she walked into her apartment complex office to see if she could break her lease. But the apartment manager (and good friend) pleaded with her to stay—offering her a job as the on-site property manager.

40

NOVEMBER 2023

.

“She said to me, ‘Let this be your in-between job until you figure out your next step,’” Barrie recalls. “Oh, and she gave me 50 percent off my rent, so it was really a no-brainer.” That fortuitous moment led Barrie to her next career move— managing high-end apartment complexes and eventually homeowners’ associations.

lakenormanw oman.com

Soon after becoming the property manager for the then up-and-coming Birkdale Village, she met her future business partner. “Barrie and I have the same goals and always want to learn and grow,” she explains. “We have our clients’ backs and each other’s.” Exceptionally busy, both ladies are married and mom to three. When they are not helping folks reach their real estate dreams, you are likely to find them planning and volunteering in philanthropic events. They also manage to find time for their other passion—travel.

WRITER Lindsay Martell

BARRIE ROJAHN

“My favorite experience,” Jennifer shares, “was a recent trip to the Azores—the islands off the coast of Portugal. My husband and I spent 14 days hiking the rims of volcanos, swimming in beautiful natural pools, and ascending some of the highest peaks in Portugal. It was fabulous!” Barrie’s globetrotting chart includes Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, and much of the United States. “I went to Utah recently,” she says, “with several of my running buddies. We were there to run a race, but we carved out time to celebrate my birthday and visit some of the canyons and national parks. It was wild, untouched, and absolutely gorgeous.” While these adventure seekers will always make time for extracurriculars, they remain dedicated to their families and their soaring real estate business … which to them is a “relationship business.” “Helping others reach their real estate goals and building successful relationships within and around the industry is what fuels me … it is what keeps me motivated every day,” Barrie gratefully acknowledges. Jennifer agrees and concludes: “There is just no better feeling than to be a part of that journey. We are blessed and overwhelmingly grateful to be able to help people achieve their dreams and to build the kind of friendships that last forever.” w

We know how busy life can get—kids, work, family, friends … sometimes just getting dinner on the table is a Herculean feat! So in an effort to save our readers some time, effort, and money here are a few tips, tricks, and hacks that might come in handy in your busy world!

Crank Up Your Cranberries Stir-in one (or more) of the following to one can of whole or jellied cranberry sauce: 2 tbsp. orange juice plus 1 tsp. of finely grated orange peel ½ can of mandarin oranges ½ cup pineapple

When You’re Tired of Turkey Pizza Bubbles: Similar to Monkey Bread, quarter biscuits from a can, put the pieces in a bowl, and coat with spaghetti sauce, about a cup. Gently mix in a cup of shredded mozzarella and then place in a greased casserole dish. Bake at 375 for 15-20 minutes. Top it off with more cheese (to your heart’s delight!) and any other toppings; bake for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese bubbles.

½ tsp. cinnamon ½ cup chopped dried apricots ½ cup toasted pecans ½ cup toasted coconut

TIPS, & HACKS

Thanksgiving SHORTCUTS

Add Stuff to Your Stuffing Make it easy on yourself and buy boxed stuffing but use chicken broth instead of water. You can also add chopped celery and onions, pecan pieces, dried cranberries (craisins), or cream of chicken soup for a heartier dish.

Warming Up to a Cool Idea Coolers come in handy for extra storage during all the holiday cook fests, but they also make great warmers. Just line your cooler with aluminum foil and keep things toasty warm.

Awesome Hack Alert Use your dishwasher to cook vegetables. Just put veggies such as green beans, asparagus, or carrots in a mason jar, add a tablespoon of butter (optional), a bit of water (about an inch), and some seasonings, herbs, or lemon slice. Put the lid on and run it through the dishwasher on the top rack. w

gratitude

REAL HEARTFELT Being grateful is to some just a catch phrase … a fad easily tossed around as a way to guide us on how to live better lives. But it’s not a fad, it’s real. TO M E , B E I N G G R AT E F U L I S that intense

warm, fuzzy feeling of overwhelming appreciation, happiness, and thankfulness that occurs when something wonderful has happened. It is the reason behind the joy and the uncontrollable smile that occurs when I am the recipient of some type of gift, tangible or not. Sometimes this feeling comes easily, and other times, not so much. When my day begins by parting the curtains to feel the warmth on my face from the brilliant yellow and orange of the morning peeking through the branches, and over the top of the wall of pine trees, feeling grateful comes easily. Whereas, when I am on I-77 and am abruptly cut off by someone, narrowly avoiding an accident, being grateful is a bit more challenging. That is, until I change my perspective and become grateful that no one was injured.

46

NOVEMBER 2023

.

lakenormanw oman.com

Yet, one of the things in my life that I do not have to work at being grateful for is my freedom, for it is one of the cornerstones of my living with gratitude and embracing a constant state of appreciation for daily life … regardless of outcome.

For me, freedom has always been synonymous with the word American. I have a sense of security just because I was born in a certain place and at a certain time. I have the right to live wherever I want without worrying about any feuding people or communities. I have the right to come and go as I please and

say what I think needs to be said. I can determine how I want to live and express myself accordingly … I have the right to make choices. Every time I stand for our national anthem and the raspy words of “land of the free” pass my lips, tears often run down my cheeks … not ones of sadness, but ones of pride and, yes, of gratitude. Gratitude to those who fought to give us our inalienable rights. Gratitude to those who entered into service to protect our country at home and abroad—willing to give everything so others have choices, and yet they expect nothing in return. Gratitude to those I may never know, for a debt we can never repay. If that isn’t real, I don’t know what is. w
