IN-CHIEF

ONE IN EIGHT.

That’s how many women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It’s a sobering statistic—one that reminds us just how deeply connected we all are.

At Lake Norman Woman magazine, our mission is to honor every woman. Whether you’re juggling a million things during busy school mornings or preparing for the fight of your life—we’re here to lift each other up and straighten each other’s crowns.

This month, we turn our pages pink to raise awareness, encourage prevention, and most importantly, to remind every woman that she is not alone. Because behind every survivor is a tribe of sisters who held her hand, brought her meals, answered her 2 a.m. texts, or simply reminded her she’s stronger than she feels.

The stories in this issue aren’t just about breast cancer— they’re about bravery, vulnerability, humor, and hope. They’re a celebration of sisterhood in its truest form.

So, whether this disease has touched your life or not, I hope these pages leave you feeling seen, supported, and part of something bigger than yourself.

Because when women stand together, we don’t just raise awareness—we raise each other.

The American Cancer Society recommends women at average risk for breast cancer be screened according to these guidelines:

WOMEN AGES 40-44

Should have the choice to start screening with a mammogram every year.

Should get mammograms every year

*Women who are at high risk for breast cancer may need to start screening earlier or be screened more often

Should start having a mammogram every other year Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and expected to live at least 10 more years

TIME FOR A mammogram?

DON’T SKIP THIS IMPORTANT SCREENING

YOU TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR health by eating right, exercising and reducing stress. But are you also having regular mammograms? If not, you could be overlooking a vital form of self-care.

A mammogram is a low-dose breast x-ray. Medical experts say it is the most effective way to look for changes in the breasts that could eventually become cancerous. Mammograms can find signs of cancer years before symptoms— such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge—show up. When breast cancer is found early, it is often easier to treat.

Less likely to need aggressive treatments such as mastectomy (surgical removal of the breast).

Less likely to need chemotherapy

More likely to be cured

Simply put, mammograms can save lives. Talk with your doctor about having regular mammograms starting at age 40.

The American Cancer Society recommends:

Women between 40 and 44 have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year. Women 45 -54 should get mammograms every year.

Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or they can choose to continue yearly mammograms. Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years.

All women should understand what to expect when getting a mammogram for breast cancer screening – what the test can and cannot do.

Women who notice any changes in their breasts should see a physician right away.

Mammograms: WHAT TO EXPECT

1 After you check in, you will remove your shirt and bra and put on a loosefitting top that opens in the front. The technician will give you wipes so you can remove all traces of deodorant, antiperspirant, lotion, powder or perfume from your breasts and underarms. These products can show up on the x-ray.

2 Next, you’ll enter the x-ray room. Before you get started, be sure to tell the technician if you think you may be pregnant or if you have breast implants.

3 The technician will guide you into the right position in front of the mammography machine and gently place your breast on its surface. They will place a plastic plate on top and press down to flatten your breast tissue, which will create the highest-quality pictures.

4 The technician will ask you to hold still while they take the x-rays. You’re likely to feel some discomfort, but it usually goes away quickly.

5 You will typically receive your results by mail within 30 days. The mammography facility will also send the results to your doctor. If you have questions about your report, talk with your doctor.

think pink EARLY DETECTION & CARE

BREAST CANCER REMAINS one of the most common cancers among women, both in the United States and worldwide. In 2024, more than 300,000 women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, yet only about two-thirds of these cases were detected early. This underscores the critical importance of understanding breast cancer screening guidelines, being aware of unique considerations for special populations, and recognizing potential signs and symptoms. To stay informed and proactive, the following insights and reminders can help guide early detection and care.

Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis

Breast cancer screening is not a onesize-fits-all approach—the timing, type, and need for screening can vary from person to person. For the general population, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40. While there is no universally agreedupon age to stop screening, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) suggests age 75 as a general cutoff. Still, this decision often depends on individual factors such as other health conditions, life expectancy, the ability to undergo further testing or treatment, and, most importantly, the patient’s personal values and preferences.

LKN expert

Special Populations

Some women may need to begin breast cancer screening earlier than the general recommendations. This includes those with a strong family history, certain genetic mutations that increase lifetime risk, a history of chest radiation therapy, or conditions such as atypical ductal hyperplasia (the growth of abnormal cells within the breast ducts). If any of these factors apply, it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider about whether earlier or additional screening tests—beyond mammograms—may be right for you. Many cancer centers now also offer high-risk breast cancer screening programs and counseling to help guide these decisions.

Signs and Symptoms

Everyone should be familiar with the normal look and feel of their own breasts and promptly report any changes to a healthcare provider. Warning signs that deserve medical attention include nipple discharge, retraction, or inversion; skin that appears dimpled, pitted, thickened, swollen, or red; persistent, unexplained pain; and any new lumps or masses in the breast or under the arm (axilla).

HOW FASHION CAN EMPOWER WOMEN THROUGH EVERY SEASON Strength in Style

For every woman walking through a tough season, we’re here to wrap you in comfort, confidence, and a little bit of hope.

At Whitlyn’s, we don’t just sell clothes we walk beside women. Through celebrations, heartbreaks, big life moments, and quiet personal battles, we’ve seen how retail can be a soft place to land. And in October, as we pause to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our mission feels especially close to the heart

You see, this isn’t just a cause for us. It’s personal.

So many family members and close personal friends have survived breast cancer. Their stories are stitched into who we are. We’ve witnessed the strength it takes to fight, to heal, and to keep showing up every day with grace and grit And we’ve seen how something as simple as a blouse or a cozy sweater can be a reminder: you’re still you.

This October, we’re inviting our customers to join us in spreading that love. When you make a purchase at Whitlyn’s, you’ll have the opportunity to write a heartfelt note to a breast cancer survivor or someone currently in treatment. These handwritten messages will be passed along to local women who need to be reminded that they are not alone that this community is cheering them on

OF LAKE NORMAN

Jen

I was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer on July 1, 2024. That first week was the darkest of my life until I laid my burden down at church with my husband and three children by my side. Clinging to the motto “God’s got this,” I chose to have an aesthetically flat double mastectomy, endured 12 weeks of chemo, and, through prayer, avoided sickness. I want women to know it’s going to be ok, and we can still live, thrive, and be beautiful. I rang the bell as a survivor on September 11, 2025. As a salon owner in Denver (Salon Chic 704.506.2091), I’ve turned my journey into purpose by offering organic, toxin-free products that honor health and healing.

When I first heard the words, my world collapsed. Fear gripped me, but my children, family, and fiancé gave me strength and purpose. I wanted to see my kids grow, to create lasting memories. Faith, gratitude, and the encouragement of other survivors reminded me I wasn’t alone. Cancer reshaped my perspective, and I now see the fragility of life and don’t take one second for granted. I take in the small things as large doses of gratitude ... I treasure laughter, coffee dates, and family moments as precious gifts. To prepare for my hair loss, my dear friend and hairdresser sent me this psalm: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid because you are close beside me.” After cutting my hair, she prayed over me. When I first heard the words “you have breast cancer,” I was sitting in my car at a gas station, bracing for bad news. I was only 35, running a business, and raising three small children. My best friend, a hospital police officer, had fast-tracked my mammogram, and the diagnosis came quickly: cancer in both breasts. What carried me through was the support around me. My community rallied for my kids, and the cancer center provided resources I didn’t even know I needed. Most of all, my grandmother came to stay during my surgery and recovery. She has always been my safe place, bringing a calming strength that helped me move forward. Cancer has reshaped my priorities. I no longer sweat the small stuff; I cut out negativity and hold tight to the moments with people I love. My advice to any woman beginning this journey: be your own best advocate. Ask questions, seek answers, and allow yourself grace ... you don’t have to be strong every second. Today, I find joy in giving back. Through Swim Across America, I help raise money for life-saving research. And whenever I need a reminder of my own resilience, I turn up “Fight Song”—my anthem of survival.

Charlisa Herriott

When Dr. Steis walked into the room and said the words, “It is cancer,” I was alone, far from family. Overcome with tears, I was comforted by a nurse who, by chance, shared hometown ties with me. In that moment, she wrapped me in a hug and reminded me, “You’re not alone; you have family here.” I knew then I would fight—with hope. My journey has been long and intense: months of chemotherapy, surgery, and 33 rounds of radiation. Through it all, I leaned on my faith and the promises of God, surrounded by an inner circle of love who prayed and spoke life over me. I created moments of joy with my family, even in the hardest times, and found strength through helping others as a behavior therapist. Seventeen years, three battles with cancer, and countless lessons later, I now see life through a HEALED lens—seeking peace, embracing change, and living fully present. My encouragement to other women is this: embrace who you are today, and never be afraid to laugh, love, and sip on The HEALED Life™️. “My transparency will be the catalyst for someone’s healing.” I AM The HEALED®️. I AM H.E.R. And She is ME.

At just 39 years old, I heard the words no woman wants to hear: “You have breast cancer.” Nine months of surgeries, chemo, and radiation tested me in every way possible but revealed a strength I never knew I had. Today, I’m a survivor in progress and a Young Advocate with Living Beyond Breast Cancer, supporting other women through their journeys. My mission is clear. I want to remind women that breast cancer does not discriminate. Selfexams, early detection, and listening to your body save lives ... period. Cancer changed my life, but it also gave me a calling to educate, empower, and inspire.

Paula Montgomery

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024 and began an intense journey—24 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, five weeks of radiation, and, most recently, breast reconstruction surgery. Through it all, my community wrapped me and

HOW TO SUPPORT SOMEONE

who is battling breast cancer

WHEN SOMEONE IS diagnosed with breast cancer, loneliness and despair can begin to creep in. This is why finding the right support is key to their successful treatment and recovery.

Breast cancer treatment is a highly personalized process that could include chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, or various forms of therapy. It could result in hair loss, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, and immunodeficiencies. These side effects may be short-lived or permanent and can take a toll on someone’s mental, physical, and emotional health.

Some studies show there may be a link to the amount of support a person receives during and after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. There are several ways to show them some love and care during this difficult time without breaking the bank. Some may be easier than you think.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS:

Send them a text message to let them know you’re thinking about them.

Drive them to and from appointments.

Offer to take their children to and from school or activities.

Send over a food delivery service gift card such as Doordash or UberEats.

Offer to clean their home or do their laundry.

Take their kids out for the day so they can enjoy some much-needed rest.

Make a variety of meals to pop in their freezer for days when they can’t cook.

Offer to do their grocery shopping.

Give their pets some love and attention.

Bring them their favorite drink and sit and chat.

Help them organize their medications.

Find local support groups and go with them.

Be the point of contact for updating other friends and family on their recovery.

Iredell Health System hosts a Breast Cancer Support Group on the first Tuesday of each month at the Statesville YMCA from 6:00-7:00 p.m. No reservation is required, and refreshments are provided. Contact Jen Forte, Oncology Navigator, at Jennifer.forte@iredellhealth.org for more information.

Support looks different for everyone. Talk to your friend about their needs and wants and how to best serve them. Encouraging them to build relationships with their care team is critical to understanding their diagnosis and treatment plan. This may include their oncologist, medical social worker, or therapist.

Your friend will forever appreciate the time you took to support them during their journey.

breast CONCERNS I HEAR

WHEN IT COMES TO BREAST CANCER, patients often carry more questions than answers. Beyond the medical jargon and statistics, what they truly seek is clarity, reassurance, and guidance they can trust. In my practice, I’ve found the same concerns surface again and again—questions rooted in fear, hope, and the desire to make informed choices. Here, I’ll share the three top questions I hear most often along with compassionate, practical insights.

What is causing my breast pain?

Breast pain is so common! It affects 70-80% of women. A lot of women will be concerned there is something ominous going on, but almost always breast pain is a benign finding. Some reassuring signs are if the breast pain is on both breasts or accompanies more than a quarter of one breast; if the pain ebbs and flows and is not constant; and it is not accompanied by a mass or a bump. Some reasons for breast pain include chest wall injury or inflammation (costochondritis); hormone fluctuations with your menstrual cycle; side-effects of birth control medications or menopausal hormone therapies; shingles; strain on Cooper’s ligament; cysts; mastitis; referred pain from nerve root, gallbladder, or peptic ulcer disease.

1

What is the best screening test for breast cancer?

Mammography is the single best screening test for breast cancer. It is the only screening modality that has been shown to decrease breast cancer morbidity and mortality. It is the only imaging test that can pick up on subtle asymmetries in the breast and calcifications which are usually the first signs of breast cancer. Depending on your individual risk and/or your breast density, your healthcare provider may recommend supplemental imaging such as ultrasounds, abbreviated breast MRI, or full breast MRI. These supplemental tests are just that—they supplement the information given by mammogram. It’s important to know that thermography and ultrasound alone are not FDA approved for the detection of breast cancer. If you are worried about radiation from mammograms, don’t be. The amount of radiation you get from one mammogram is equivalent to the amount of radiation a passenger receives from a cross-country flight.

2

Does menopausal hormone therapy cause breast cancer?

The short answer is, we don’t think so. And by “think” I mean this is what was shown in the notorious Women’s Health Initiative in the early 2000s. This study showed that women who took conjugated equine estrogen alone (“estrogen”) had a decreased rate of breast cancer. Those who took conjugated equine estrogen and medroxyprogesterone acetate (“estrogen and progestin”) had a very slight increase in breast cancer, but this was not statistically significant. Furthermore, in the menopause community, we rarely recommend medroxyprogesterone acetate anymore. This is a very complicated subject, but in general many of us who are certified menopause practitioners understand the data to support that menopausal hormone therapy does not increase your risk of breast cancer above baseline. Two of the most wellestablished risk factors for breast cancer are alcohol consumption and no or low physical activity.

HELENE

A YEAR OF HEALING AND HOPE

One Year Later:

WHEN HURRICANE HELENE ROARED through North Carolina last September, it left a profound scar on the hearts of families, businesses, and entire communities across our region. In the year since, recovery has been a story of resilience, courage, and unity. Neighbors became lifelines, strangers became friends, and towns discovered a strength they never knew they had. While challenges remain, the journey of rebuilding has been filled with small victories that remind us that even after the fiercest storms, hope always rises.

Biltmore Estate

Biltmore reported minimal structural damage to the house, winery, hotels, gardens, and conservatory, and the estate has resumed normal visitor programming, including all holidays.

Downtown Asheville

Most storefronts and tourism activity are largely back to normal. While rivers and some neighborhoods suffered flooding, downtown’s restaurants, galleries, and shops bounced back quickly. The city established a community recovery engagement hub to coordinate rebuilding support.

Lake Lure

The Town of Lake Lure documented severe structural damage to some historic features. Most notably the Flowering Bridge was declared beyond repair and removed after engineering assessments. Local inns, restaurants, and businesses have worked to keep services available while recovery continues.

Regional Infrastructure and Roads

Major repair programs are still underway with phased reopenings. The Blue Ridge Parkway and many mountain roads suffered thousands of downed trees, washouts, and landslides. NPS and state crews have reopened many segments but large repair programs (and multiyear projects for some stretches) remain in progress.

Grandfather Mountain

The park reopened after repairs and mobilized local recovery efforts. While it was closed for several weeks after Helene for cleanup and safety checks, officials found only limited trail/landscape damage. They are open to visitors and have been active in coordinating volunteer and partner efforts (FEMA, Samaritan’s Purse, Appalachia Service Project, local nonprofits) for broader community/ housing recovery.

The storm took much, but it also gave us a renewed sense of perspective: homes can be rebuilt, roads can be repaved, and businesses can reopen, but the unshakable spirit of a community is what truly endures. If you’d like to help, below are some area nonprofits that are still assisting in Helene’s aftermath:

Local Businesses and Tourism

Across the mountain towns (Asheville area, Black Mountain, Marion, Lake Lure/Chimney Rock region, and the High Country), shop owners, restaurants and lodging operators report gradual return of visitors and community-supported reopenings. Visitor guides and “We’re Open” campaigns have been used to bring tourism back while recovery continues.

theA BOLD AND RENEWED APPROACH TO LONGEVITY AND ANTI-AGING

When most people think about “anti-aging,” they imagine creams, supplements, and the occasional fitness resolution that fades after January. But for DR. CORAL KIRSCHER, DNP, FNP-C, founder of Renew Specialty Group in Cornelius, anti-aging means something far more profound. It’s about extending health span, not just lifespan, and keeping the brain sharp, the body resilient, and the spirit curious at every stage of life.

Together with her husband, Dr. Micah Kirscher, DNP, FNP-C, Coral is leading a new era of functional and integrative medicine, providing patients with progressive solutions when traditional medicine falls short. From innovative hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to groundbreaking peptide protocols, their clinic has quickly become a trusted destination in Lake Norman for patients who want to feel and perform at their best.

Coral’s journey into healthcare was shaped by her own struggles with autoimmune conditions, including Hashimoto’s and lupus, which were mismanaged by conventional medicine in her younger years. After her own deep dive into research and healing, she discovered that many of her symptoms were caused by a prescribed medication rather than the conditions themselves. That realization lit a fire in her, and she became the advocate for her patients that she never had herself.

“My goal has always been to empower patients with meaningful information, cutting-edge research, and holistic options,” Coral explains. “We pride ourselves on being proactive, not reactive. We’re with our patients every step of the way.”

That commitment has become the cornerstone of Renew Specialty Group—a clinic known for offering personalized treatment protocols that address root causes rather than masking symptoms. They have grown rapidly in both services and reputation. Their HRT program has helped countless men and women restore balance, energy, and vitality. Their peptide therapy offerings—from weight loss to cellular repair—are among the most advanced in the region, ensuring patients have access to safe, medical-grade protocols. Recently, they welcomed Nacole Wood, MSN, FNP-C, to the team, expanding their ability to deliver exceptional care.

"THAT COMMITMENT HAS BECOME THE CORNERSTONE OF RENEW SPECIALTY GROUP— A CLINIC KNOWN FOR OFFERING PERSONALIZED TREATMENT

PROTOCOLS THAT ADDRESS ROOT CAUSES RATHER THAN MASKING SYMPTOMS. "

Expanding beyond wellness into healing, their newest venture, Renew Wound Care Specialists and Renew Wound Care Center, reflects their desire to meet a broader range of patient needs. “We want to be a leading and progressive healthcare solution for patients who feel they’ve been failed by traditional medicine,” Micah says. “That requires constant innovation, and we’re committed to delivering it.”

The Kirschers’ approach to anti-aging doesn’t end at the clinic doors. They believe keeping the brain challenged is just as critical as supporting the body with medical interventions. For them, the latest brain-boosting endeavor comes with a cockpit view.

This summer, Coral and Micah began flight training at Race City Flight Operations, guided by flight instructor Elliott Davis, CFI, and Matt Quillinan, CFI. Both have long shared a fascination with aviation, and now, with toddler daughter Harbor cheering them on from the runway, they’re chasing the skies together.

“Flying is the perfect anti-aging exercise,” Coral smiles. “It demands focus, precision, continuous learning, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. It keeps the brain young.” Micah agrees: “We always tell our patients that growth and challenge are essential to longevity. This was the perfect way to live out that philosophy together and show Harbor that curiosity and resilience are lifelong pursuits.”

Renew Specialty Group has gained recognition for offering unique, multifaceted anti-aging programs that go beyond surface results. Their recently revamped weight-loss program is one example. While many programs focus solely on the scale, the Kirschers designed a protocol that not

only helps patients shed pounds but also improves inflammation, lowers A1C, reduces cardiovascular risk, and enhances metabolic and cognitive health.

“We’ve seen patients transform not just physically but mentally,” Coral says. “That’s what true anti-aging looks like ... feeling strong, sharp, and vibrant across all aspects of life.”

At the heart of their offerings is NAD+ therapy, a treatment Coral calls “the true jack of all trades.” Research has shown NAD+ supports DNA repair, boosts cellular energy, and slows age-related decline. Unlike over-the-counter supplements—which are unregulated and often ineffective —prescriptive, IV or injected, NAD+ delivers pharmaceutical-grade quality that meets and exceeds strict medical standards. Coral emphasizes that it’s not about chasing youth for vanity’s sake but rather giving the body and brain the tools to thrive for decades to come, with the assurance that every treatment is backed by the highest level of safety and efficacy.

Between balancing a thriving practice, parenting, and now flying lessons, the Kirschers clearly have a busy

schedule but remain grounded in their passion for people. “Our purpose is to help patients navigate the complex landscape of health and wellness,” Coral says. “We’re humbled every day by the trust they place in us.” Micah adds, “At the end of the day, it’s not just about science. It’s about compassion, family, and faith. We’ve built Renew Specialty Group to reflect those values.”

For patients seeking more than cookiecutter medicine, Renew Specialty Group represents hope. And for the Kirschers, hope isn’t just a word, it’s a lifelong mission where the sky’s the limit.

This super easy sausage pasta is smothered in a rich white wine sauce with roasted acorn squash, parmesan, sautéed onions, garlic and herbs.

ingredients

1 Acorn Squash, cut into slices

2 tbsp. Olive Oil

16 oz. Pasta Noodles

(Fettuccini, Linguini or Bucatini)

1 lb. Ground Sausage

½ Red Onion, thinly sliced

2 Large Garlic Cloves, roughly chopped

Roasted ACORN SQUASH & SAUSAGE Pasta

instructions

1 tsp. Dried Thyme

1 cup Dry White Wine

⅓ cup Half and Half

¾ cup Shredded Parmesan Cheese + more for garnish

Freshly Chopped Italian Parsley, as needed for garnish

Salt + Pepper, to taste

Red Pepper Flakes, optional

1 Preheat oven to 400F. Slice the acorn squash in half, remove the seeds and then cut each half into 1-inch slices. Toss the slices together with olive oil, salt, pepper, and place in a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast for 10 minutes, flip, and roast for an additional 10 minutes.

2 Cook the pasta according to its package directions.

3 While the pasta is boiling, fry the sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook until the sausage has crumbled and is extra brown and crispy. Once browned, add the onion and garlic, then continue to sauté until the onions have softened.

YOUR GREATEST ASSET:your BRAIN

WHEN MOST PEOPLE THINK ABOUT HEALTH, they look at diet, exercise, or medical checkups. Yet the most important factor driving all of these—the organ coordinating every heartbeat, thought, and breath— is often overlooked. Your greatest asset is your brain.

The brain weighs only about three and a half pounds, but it consumes 20% of the body’s oxygen and energy. It regulates body temperature to a tenth of a degree, directs hormones, and manages digestion, immunity, and sleep—all while generating thought, creativity, and emotion. Every success, failure, relationship, and performance originates in this remarkable organ. And yet, for most of modern medicine, the brain remains under-measured. Doctors often diagnose based on behavior checklists or symptoms, without ever examining the brain’s electrical activity or how the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is functioning.

My own career began in traditional neuropsychology at a children’s hospital. I was trained to diagnose conditions like ADHD, anxiety, or depression and then recommend treatments, usually medications. But after evaluating over 80,000 brains, I discovered something profound: no two brains are the same. Labels don’t capture the uniqueness of each person’s nervous system. Families often came back discouraged—the pill didn’t solve the problem, or it created new ones. That realization shifted my focus. Instead of just describing behavior, I committed to measuring the brain directly—its rhythms, its balance, and its regulation.

That is the foundation of RoyerNeuroscience. By evaluating the brain and autonomic nervous system, we move upstream to the source of issues, rather than endlessly chasing symptoms downstream. The ANS, in particular, is the body’s operating system. It decides when to upshift into fightor-flight and when to downshift into recovery. When it functions well, we adapt fluidly—running hard when challenged, resting deeply when it’s time to recover. But when it gets stuck—often due to chronic stress, trauma, or lifestyle—our health and performance break down. Sleep falters, digestion suffers, attention wanes, and even immune function can decline.

AFTER EVALUATING OVER 80,000 BRAINS, I DISCOVERED SOMETHING PROFOUND: NO TWO BRAINS ARE THE SAME.

What I’ve learned across three decades of work is that everyone—whether a severely autistic child or an NFL quarterback—has the same central challenge: a brain and nervous system that must be

regulated. At RoyerNeuroscience, I have worked with 13 starting quarterbacks in the NFL, as well as children with profound developmental challenges. While their goals look very different, the common denominator is the brain. When we measure it, understand it, and train it, we see breakthroughs— whether it’s a child finding calm where there was once only chaos, or a professional athlete finding the extra edge that changes a season.

Your brain is not fixed; it is adaptable, trainable, and far more powerful than most people realize. But you cannot improve what you do not measure. Just as cardiologists measure heart rhythms or endocrinologists measure hormones, true progress begins when we evaluate the brain itself. At RoyerNeuroscience, that is our mission: to help every individual— whether in crisis or at the peak of performance—strengthen their greatest asset, their brain.

How Advanced Facials Support Your Skin’s Natural Rhythm

YOU MAY NOTICE THAT YOUR SKIN DOES NOT bounce back the way it once did. Makeup doesn’t sit quite right, or your glow seems harder to maintain. One reason is that skin’s natural renewal slows with age. By your forties, collagen production can decline by 25 percent and cell turnover by nearly 50 percent, leaving skin looking less firm or more uneven.

Even if you are faithfully applying vitamin C, retinol, and SPF every day, professional treatments can reach deeper than home care alone. They work with your body’s own renewal process and give it the extra support it needs to function at its best.

Here are three ways advanced facials can help your skin stay healthy, resilient, and radiant.

1

MICRONEEDLING: CREATING SPACE FOR NEW GROWTH

Think of your skin like a well-loved garden. Over time, the soil becomes compacted and plants lose vitality. Microneedling is like gently aerating that soil, creating tiny channels that signal your skin to plant fresh seeds of collagen and elastin. With proper aftercare and nourishing ingredients, that new growth comes in stronger and healthier.

2

OXYGEN AND NUTRIENT-BASED FACIALS

Oxygen is essential for every cell in your body, including your skin. Certain oxygen-based treatments create a carbon dioxide–rich environment on the skin’s surface, which triggers what is known as the Bohr Effect. This natural process signals the body to deliver a surge of oxygen, creating the perfect conditions for regeneration and nutrient absorption. Other non-invasive options, such as gentle chemical peels, work on a similar principle by lifting away dull surface layers so fresh, healthy skin cells can emerge.

3

HOLISTIC SUPPORT WITH MASSAGE AND RELAXATION

Advanced skincare is not only about stimulation. It is also about support. Facial massage, lymphatic drainage, and other hands-on techniques help reduce puffiness, encourage detoxification, and create a sense of calm. When the nervous system is balanced, skin can focus on repair instead of defense, making every other treatment more effective.

The Medicare Decision Trap:

5 Mistakes That Can Cost You Thousands

EVERY YEAR, MANY MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES MAKE SIMPLE MISTAKES that end up costing them dearly. These aren’t rare missteps—they’re common, easy to overlook, and often discovered only after the bills arrive. Here are five of the costliest traps and how to avoid them.

mistake #1

Delaying Enrollment

When you first become eligible (usually at 65) you have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period: the month of your birthday plus the 3 months before and after. Miss it without other qualifying coverage and you’ll face a lifetime penalty of 10% extra for every year you delay Part B.

Case Example: Linda waited 2 years to save money. Her premiums are now 20% higher for life, costing more than $600 annually.

TIP: Mark your enrollment dates and confirm whether you can delay without penalty.

mistake #4

Ignoring the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC)

Every fall, plans send details about next year’s changes. Skipping it could mean surprise copays, lost benefits, or dropped doctors.

Case Example: Tom ignored his ANOC and later learned his specialist was dropped mid-treatment, forcing him to switch or pay out-of-network.

TIP: Always review your ANOC and compare plans during Open Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7).

mistake #2

Confusing Medicare Advantage with Medigap (Supplement)

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare and often includes drug coverage. Medigap, by contrast, supplements Original Medicare to reduce out-of-pocket costs. Choosing the wrong one can create gaps in coverage.

Case Example: George picked Advantage for the lower premium but didn’t realize his plan’s network didn’t extend outside his state. A hospital visit in Florida left him with a hefty bill.

TIP: Compare plans carefully. Frequent travelers or those with many specialists may prefer Medigap, while Advantage can fit those seeking lower premiums and extra benefits.

mistake #5

Assuming You Can Switch Anytime

Outside your Initial Enrollment (or a qualifying life event like moving or losing coverage) you can only change plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15–Dec 7).

mistake #3

Not Checking Provider Networks & Drug Lists

Advantage and Part D plans rely on provider networks and drug formularies. Ignoring them can mean losing your doctor or paying far more for prescriptions.

Case Example: Maria switched to a cheaper drug plan but didn’t check the formulary. Her prescription jumped from $45 to $280 per month.

Each year, call your agent or use your plan’s “Drug Look Up” tool to review all medications and providers.

Case Example: Ellen tried to switch plans in March after discovering her hospital wasn’t covered. With no qualifying event, she had to wait until October, paying higher costs in the meantime.

TIP: Know your enrollment periods so you’re not stuck in the wrong plan.

why choose

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: ORGANIC

THINKING ABOUT GOING ORGANIC?

While both organic and conventionally grown foods provide essential nutrients, a review of 50 years of research cited by the Mayo Clinic found that “organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs are not significantly different in their nutrient content.” Still, nutrition is only part of the story—organic foods offer other benefits that make them a compelling choice.

ADDITIVES AND PROCESSING

USDA Organic standards ensure that foods are produced with minimal artificial additives, preservatives, colorings, or flavorings. To earn the USDA Organic seal, a product must meet strict guidelines, with at least 95% of ingredients grown and processed organically. This gives consumers confidence in choosing foods closer to their natural state.

Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution.

FARMING PRACTICES

Organic farmers rely on natural methods to protect crops and nurture soil. Techniques such as crop rotation, beneficial insects, and natural fertilizers help control pests and promote healthy ecosystems. Conventional farms often use synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, while organic practices prioritize sustainability, soil health, and biodiversity.

Don’t confuse the word “organic” with “natural” and other terms such as “all natural,” “free-range,” or “hormone-free” on food labels; they are not interchangeable.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Beyond personal health, organic farming supports the planet. By reducing chemical use and promoting soil and water conservation, organic practices help protect ecosystems, conserve resources, and encourage biodiversity, making it a choice that benefits both communities and the environment.

MAKING YOUR CHOICE

While organic foods may not always be more nutrientdense, their natural growing methods, strict processing standards, and environmentally friendly practices make them a smart choice for those seeking safer, more sustainable food options. Consider your priorities, your budget, and your community’s health when deciding what goes in your cart.

HIS own words

WE’RE USUALLY ALL ABOUT HIGHLIGHTING WOMEN, BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN, WE PASS THE MIC. In our column In His Own Words, we invite local men to share their stories, insights, and a bit of their personality. From doctors and dentists to entrepreneurs and realtors, these professionals are part of the fabric of our community—and they’ve got something to say. This month, meet Dr. Tyler Wurmlinger of Cosmetic Dentistry of the Carolinas.

HONORING A LEGACY

I was fortunate to inherit a foundation built by Dr. Ross Nash, a pioneer in aesthetic dentistry whose reputation for artistry and excellence set a high standard. While I bring my own vision and approach to the practice, I am grateful for the example he set and proud to continue building on that legacy.

SMILES BY DESIGN

What makes our practice truly special is the people and the commitment behind every smile. My journey to dentistry has been shaped by experiences that go beyond the chair. Before becoming a dentist, I served as a U.S. Navy officer, where I learned discipline, leadership, and integrity. These qualities continue to guide me every day. Dentistry requires precision, focus, and trust, and those values remain at the heart of my work.

CUTTING-EDGE CARE WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH

As dentistry evolves, I remain committed to learning and embracing innovation while never losing sight of what matters most: the people we serve. Whether it is cosmetic enhancements or restorative treatments, I want every patient to know they are in good hands and that their smile is uniquely valued.

A VISION FOR EXCELLENCE

For the past four years, I have had the privilege of leading Cosmetic Dentistry of the Carolinas. My goal has been to build a practice that blends advanced techniques with personalized care, where every patient feels comfortable, confident, and valued. Dentistry, to me, is about more than creating beautiful smiles. It is about restoring confidence and improving lives.

THE EXECUTIVE EXIT: What I Gained When I Let It All Go BODY spirit

AT THE PIVOT OF ANY EXECUTIVE’S LIFE, the notion of stepping away from the familiar can feel like standing at the edge of a sacred threshold—one where the known dissolves into mystery and the soul is invited to step forward into deeper truth.

My own journey began in the glass-and-steel world of corporate leadership. There, my title was shorthand for competence, connection, and strength. But when life’s quiet whisper called me toward entrepreneurship, the clarity I had once known fractured. As I unpacked internal boxes marked “What If I Fail?” and “Who Am I Without This Title?” I discovered that losing identity doesn’t erase purpose ... it reveals the soul’s essence waiting to be remembered.

Fear became a constant companion. It whispered, “You’re not ready,” while the unknown stretched wide like an uncharted horizon. Yet in that paradox,

I found something holy. It was precisely by leaning into fear and choosing to act in faith that I began to hear the first whispers of divine confidence.

I started taking small chances such as offering expertise in new ways, gathering women together in community, and speaking my truth aloud. Each step forward, however small, became less about proving worth and more about trusting that I was guided. Over time, confidence took root in my mind, and my spirit began to lift like dawn breaking through clouds. The heaviness of uncertainty gave way to lightness, curiosity, and joy.

more fluid, mornings more alive. I no longer greeted the day as a performer but as a co-creator with something greater than myself. A mind unburdened by fear allows the body to align with spirit; and when mind, body, and spirit move in harmony, life itself feels renewed.

of becoming.

My body felt the shift too. The tension once tethered to performance and perfection began to loosen. Sleep became more peaceful, movement

If you find yourself standing at life’s threshold hesitating, worried that stepping away means losing yourself, I invite you to imagine instead that it is a sacred invitation. Each brave choice, no matter how small, is a prayer of becoming. With every step, confidence grows, spirit brightens, and life realigns with the rhythm of the soul.
