“SOME DAYS ARE DIAMONDS, SOME DAYS ARE STONES.” John Denver, though he could have used some

of that intuitiveness when it came to experimental aircraft, sure nailed it when he crooned those words about the ups and downs of life. I suppose it goes without saying, but I definitely prefer the diamond-y days over the rocky ones. It’s quite easy to rise above—to elevate, as our theme this month suggests—when the day is going right…like when I stumble upon a half bag of Reece’s Cups that I hid from myself in a seldom-opened drawer. On the rocky days, I mostly pout. My well-meaning husband will try to help by reminding me that I have so much to be grateful for. I usually respond by mumbling curse words under my breath. It’s not because he’s wrong, it’s that his reminder only makes me feel worse…like a selfindulgent brat who has some kind of gratefulness disorder. I wish I could be more like Charlie Brown on my stone days. Sure, he is a bit pensive for a kid, but with good reason. After all, nearly all of his days are stones. He’s continually humiliated by a bully who not only calls him a horrible name liking his head to an unflattering shape but who also takes great pleasure in pulling a football away just as he’s about to kick it. Adding insult to injury, his adult neighbors give other children candy on Halloween, but only give him rocks. In addition, Charlie pines for the Little Red-Haired Girl and a kite that will fly, both of which remain just out of reach. It’s no wonder that at the tender age of eight he needs a psychiatrist.

If I were Charlie Brown, those neighbors would have flaming bags of poo decorating their front stoops, and Lucy would receive the swift kick meant for the football. But retaliation isn’t Charlie Brown’s style. Even though he faces day after day of disappointment, he remains hopeful that tomorrow he will triumph. Charlie Brown chooses to focus on the diamond days sure to come—to rise above, even when his circumstances are less than ideal. We all have our stone days in which, to quote Mr. Denver once again, “the hard times won’t leave us alone.” But there is a lesson to be learned from our loveable loser friend who never kicks the football or gets the girl or pulls a Reece’s cup out of his trick or treat bag: it’s our response to moments of defeat that really defines the type of person we are, not the moments themselves. What might the days that I get nothing but rocks look like if instead of pouting I choose to be thankful for the simplest of gifts? Rather than mumbling curses, what if I opt to see the good in others? If I can harness some Charlie Brownness, those days just might look less rocky and a lot more blingy. And while I may not be inclined to philosophical contemplations like Charlie Brown, I’m no blockhead either: blingy is better. w DANA JORDAN PUBLISHER

MORE The New Craze:

THAN JUST MEDICAL

WEIGHT LOSS

WHAT IS IT?

Semaglutide is a once weekly FDA-approved weight loss injection to help you feel full longer, reduce appetite, lower blood sugar levels, and regulate insulin response. In randomized controlled studies, 85 percent of adults lost a significant amount of weight and over half of them maintained their weight loss after three years.

WHAT ARE OTHER BENEFITS? In addition to weight loss, semaglutide also improved cardiovascular risk factors including greater reductions in waist circumference, BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, fasting plasma glucose, C-reactive protein, and fasting lipid levels—as well as physical functioning scores and quality of life.

THE SEMAGLUTIDE CRAZE

(Wegovy, Saxenda, Zepbound, Ozempic, Monjouro) has taken the world by storm but make sure you’re being managed correctly. Don’t go to someone simply because they have a medical license and can write you a prescription ... there are important concepts that need to be managed appropriately so you get the results you are looking for and to ensure you are getting the long-term benefits from the medication. Let’s start by looking at what semaglutide is, how it works, and some of its benefits: LKN EXPERT

lakenormanw oman.com

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT HELPS SEMAGLUTIDE WORK MORE EFFECTIVELY? Yes! Something called MIC injections which consist of a formula of lipotropics, compounds that help break down fat. The primary compounds in the formula (methionine, inositol, and choline) work to metabolize fat cells and assist in the elimination of stored fat deposits in the liver and body. Methionine is an essential amino acid; inositol is involved in proper cell formation; and choline is a water-soluble nutrient that supports proper liver function. Together they may encourage fat reduction. METHIONINE: Supports the digestive system by helping to remove heavy metals within the body while breaking down fat deposits thus preventing the possible build-up of fat in arteries. Methionine can also be converted to cytosine, the precursor of glutathione, which is essential in detoxification of the liver.

INOSITOL: Supports the transfer of nutrients at the cellular level and helps maintain proper electrical energy across the cell membrane. In addition, inositol converts fats into other useful forms of energy and assists in establishing healthy cell membranes thus facilitating nerve impulses.

CHOLINE: Assists in controlling cholesterol levels in the blood and in controlling weight gain by maintaining healthy cell membranes. Choline has been linked to and directly associated with the maintenance of the nervous system, assisting memory, and is critical for normal cell membrane structure and function. Choline is the precursor of betaine which helps in liver function and in the formation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. w

difficult—decisions a parent makes is about their child's education. After all, there are more options than ever before and so much to consider. Private schools are especially in demand today. That’s because the more than 34,000 private schools that operate in the United States offer families a variety of choices that are often unavailable in other types of educational settings. These private schools educate millions of pre-K through high school students, but the choice between private school, public school, home schooling, and charter school depends more on the individual student and family than any other factor. How do you know if a private school will be beneficial for your family? Read on to learn about some of the benefits of a private school education.

THE RIGHT FIT Private schools allow families to find an educational approach and an educational philosophy that is the best fit for them. Woodlawn School, for example, focuses on forwardlooking, innovative, and purposeful project-based learning. By utilizing a hands-on approach to learning, students are immersed in a process of designing, developing, and constructing practical solutions that address realworld problems. Challenging students academically and personally empowers them to unleash their full potential with open minds as they learn and grow across all disciplines. In addition, there are private schools that focus on services for students who have particular learning needs or interests or private schools that offer different educational philosophies, such as art- and science-based curriculums, religiously affiliated programs, etc.

ADVANCED HEARING CARE SERVICES: • Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Tests SMALLER CLASS SIZES • Communication The averageneeds privateassessments school has about 166 students, whilescreening the average and publictesting school including cognitive has about 526. The result is a difference in ability to hear in background noise class sizes, which is a huge consideration for parents • Hearing Aid consultations debating between private school and other educational settings. On average, there and are only 19 students per class • Hearing aid fittings repairs in private schools compared to 25 in public schools and • Tinnitus Management charter schools.

on A DIVINE PATH: I have always known I wanted to work with people. I grew up in Kendallville, Indiana, and after college I worked for the state’s Department of Education, Mitchell Community College, NASCAR Tech, and the Charmaine Modeling School. My husband, Todd, and I are high school sweethearts and we moved to North Carolina in 1997. I stayed home with our two beautiful children Ashtyn (20) and Colby (18) until God opened a new door for me. In 2015, a good friend of mine asked me to fill in for her at Liberty Preparatory Christian Academy in Mooresville. This would be the jumpstart to my career in education. The school grew quickly, and I was tapped to lead the admissions department in 2020, a very unpredictable time. Thankfully we doubled our enrollment and moved to a new, thriving campus. God definitely had a plan for me! on OVERCOMING OBSTACLES ONE PRAYER AT A TIME: Although my parents divorced when I was young and we struggled financially, my mom stayed faithful in God’s word. As a single mother, she taught me to be strong, independent, humble, and grateful for everything. She’d tell us, “Every day is a gift.” As a small family unit, we relied on each other a lot, and it made me and my brother particularly close. My mom remarried to the best stepdad anyone could have asked for, and he taught me many family values. I’ll always be grateful to him for that. on THE BEINGS WHO’VE SHAPED ME: I am so blessed to raise two happy, kind, successful kids. My proudest moment is watching them follow God's path. I am very proud of both of them for becoming who they are today and to see them work hard to achieve their goals. Colby was diagnosed with Steven-Johnsons syndrome—a rare skin condition—when he was a baby. The doctors told us he might not make it through the night. I simply would not accept that ... my faith was stronger than the diagnosis. We prayed and he recovered. Now a bright energetic teen, I couldn’t be more thrilled with all he’s accomplished! on UNWINDING MINDFULLY: I’m so thankful I work for a place that puts God and family first. My family is my world! I love that our home is the “hangout house” ... almost every day my house is full of kids. I let them be themselves and will always listen to them. I keep up on the current trends so that I know what they are talking about. It’s not always easy, though! I try to unplug from work as much as possible when I’m at home and focus on being 100 percent present. I’ve found that spending time boating and reading by the pool is cathartic, as is spending time with my two shepherd dogs, Marley and Shelby. All the people (and furbabies!) in my life show me how important it is to be in the moment. w

IMPACTS

THE CONNECTION

between sleep, memory, and learning is a complex phenomenon that is not entirely understood; but, say researchers, the quality and quantity of sleep are essential when it comes to brain function. If we don’t get enough sleep, our moods, motivation, judgment, and perception get off track, all of which affect learning. This is especially true for children as they are acquiring knowledge at a very rapid rate, and sleep patterns can be tricky—if not downright challenging—for our kids. Here are additional factors why sleep is so important to your child’s learning and overall brain health:

Sleep deprivation keeps you from being able to focus your attention properly. Adequate sleep is essential for proper memory function. Recall occurs when we’re awake, but research suggests that memory takes place during sleep when neural connections are being strengthened. REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is critical in visual learning, and SWS (slow-wave sleep)— which is deep, restorative sleep—contributes to memory and newly acquired information.

5 Things To Help Your Child Sleep 1 Establish a bedtime routine and be consistent. 2 Begin dimming the lights and settling the mood as bedtime approaches. 3 Have healthy bedtime snacks. Proteins such as oatmeal or whole wheat toast with peanut butter encourage sleep. 4 Get away from electronic devices and read aloud together before bedtime instead. 5 Do not use bed/ bedtime as a punishment.

For more information on sleep and learning, visit www.sleepfoundation.org.

can be very difficult to diagnose—after all, the symptoms are often indicative of normal childhood behavior. However, if a child shows six or more of the symptoms outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and they show these signs for more than six months in various settings, you may have an official diagnosis on your hands. According to WebMD, “a doctor will give your child a physical exam, take a medical history, and may even give him/her a noninvasive brain scan … the condition may be diagnosed in children ages 4 to 18.”

Here are some signs of childhood ADHD—consult your physician if your child exhibits any of the following in an unusual, harmful, or extreme way:

At its core, PBL involves students working collaboratively on dynamic projects that address real-world problems or challenges. This approach moves away from rote memorization and passive learning, empowering students to take ownership of their education. policymakers have been increasingly advocating for a shift from traditional teaching methods toward a more engaging and student-centered approach. Project-Based Learning (PBL) has emerged as a promising pedagogical strategy that fosters deep learning, critical thinking, and problemsolving skills. Woodlawn School has been utilizing the PBL approach to learning for over 20 years, integrating real-world challenges into the curriculum, and enabling students to actively explore and apply their knowledge in an integrative and purposeful manner.

BENEFITS OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING: Enhanced Engagement: PBL actively engages students by emphasizing relevance, curiosity, and creativity. According to a study by the Buck Institute for Education and PBL Works, 85% of teachers reported increased student engagement through PBL[1].

Deeper Understanding: PBL promotes critical thinking and problemsolving skills by encouraging students to apply knowledge in practical settings. By actively grappling with complex problems, students gain a deeper understanding of core concepts.

Collaboration and Communication Skills: PBL fosters teamwork and communication skills as students collaborate to devise innovative solutions and present their findings. The collaborative nature of PBL cultivates a sense of shared responsibility and develops essential interpersonal abilities.

Teacher Training and Support: The successful implementation of PBL relies on well-trained educators who can guide students effectively. Providing professional development opportunities for teachers to gain expertise in facilitating PBL is essential.

PBL represents a powerful paradigm shift in education, where students become active and engaged participants in their learning journey. By cultivating innovative, integrative, and purposeful learning experiences, PBL equips students with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. The benefits of a PBL approach to learning—enhancing engagement, deepening understanding, and fostering collaboration—are well-documented. As we continue to explore and refine educational strategies, embracing PBL holds tremendous promise for a future-focused education system. w

“My dad signed me up for dance classes when I was 5 years old,” she shares. “I loved everything about my dance studio growing up, and I got involved in every way possible.”

After a few weeks, the mama teacher had a bonafide “a-ha” moment smack in the middle of a lesson: why not teach other students and families looking for a more personalized dance experience? And just like that (well, after a ton of hard work!) Neighborhood Dance was born. Michelle says she’s incredibly proud of how her dance community has flourished—something she couldn’t have done without the support of her family, which also includes her son, Luke.

of Neighborhood Dance in Mooresville, keeps these lyrics tucked deep in her heart—for the love of dance, children, and teaching dance has been a part of her life since she was a Disney-loving kid growing up in Florida.

Michelle attended a performing arts high school and danced through her collegiate years by training at Florida School of the Arts. When she graduated, she got her first professional performing job on the Disney Cruise Lines and, soon after, moved to the Big Apple. All of her hard work, training, and perseverance paid off, and her Off-Broadway dreams resulted in her favorite role to this day — Rumpelteazer in the celebrated musical, Cats. “That was a thrilling time for me,” she recalls. “That show and that part hold such a special place in my heart.” Those experiences led her to where she is today—teaching and mentoring students of all ages about how transformative the performing arts can be. That particular journey began when she and her husband, John, moved from Connecticut to Lake Norman. It completely changed their lives for the better. Michelle’s daughter, Emily, inspired her entrepreneurial spirit back when the now-teenager was in elementary school. “Emily’s

grand promises to ourselves to lose weight, save money, exercise more, spend less. And while our next trip around the sun is paved with good intentions, we all know how hard change can be ... even when it’s imperative for good physical and mental health. The good news, however, is that each morning we have the choice and chance to make our journey more beautiful than the day before. Enter Dr. Josie Lake, founder of Lake Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in Huntersville. With a career steeped in an unwavering devotion to patient-centric care, Dr. Lake has embraced a new approach that’s both refreshing and transformative. Her authentic passion and desire to help others on such a profoundly personal level is something rare and exquisite to witness.

What sets Dr. Lake apart isn’t just her exceptional medical expertise, it’s her philosophy. It’s about spending quality time with her patients, getting to know them holistically, and fostering enduring doctor-patient relationships. Her commitment to this ethos led her away from corporate medicine’s time-restricted consultations and into a realm where patients aren’t just a number on a schedule but individuals with unique needs and goals. “My membership-practice model,” Dr. Lake explains, “allows me the time to thoroughly address all concerns and dive into lifestyle factors affecting health. What’s refreshing for patients is that they have direct access to me via phone, email, and text so their questions and concerns are answered promptly ... anytime, anywhere, I will answer! there are no traditional copayments during visits. Instead, patients pay a single membership fee covering a wide range of services—from sick-visits that require immediate attention to chronic disease management that is accompanied by comprehensive clinical and laboratory care.” With roots embedded in Pine Mountain, Georgia, Dr. Lake’s journey began at Tulane University where she earned her undergraduate degree in both molecular biophysics and chemistry. Continuing at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, she not only obtained her medical degree but also earned a master’s in public health, further shaping her holistic approach. Today, as a double-board certified physician in both internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Lake’s practice is defined by her warm, compassionate nature. Choosing the more extensive med-peds training (four years versus three in the broader family medicine residency), she emphasizes, “I enjoy the gentleness needed for children but also the intellectual depth required for complex medical cases spanning all ages.” Balancing the demands of medicine with her personal life is a challenge she navigates with finesse, but like any busy mom in today’s world it doesn’t come without intent and purpose. “When not at work, most of my time is spent with my husband and children,” she shares. “We have two sons: Robbie, 15, and Liam, 14 ... and an adorable

goldendoodle named Sanibel. We make a point to eat together every night, and we usually spend an hour together before bedtime. On the weekends, we always plan some sort of family activity.” With much to be grateful for, the good doctor is fully aware of her blessings and takes nothing for granted. In a world where time often dictates the depth of care, Dr. Lake’s practice stands as an oasis—a place where patients are not hurried through appointments but embraced with time, empathy, and understanding. In other words, essential human bonding.

It is evident to see in Dr. Lake’s eyes the joy and passion she has for what she does. She loves each and every person with her whole heart. Her comprehensive and compassionate healthcare addresses every concern each patient has— leaving no stone unturned. “Primary care medicine,” she says, “has turned into a gerbil wheel of popping on a band-aid and shipping a patient to a specialist for more expensive care within ‘the system.’ Better primary care involves taking the time to listen to the patient and doing a thorough exam to discover the root of the problem and not just treat symptoms. I have not let the climate within the industry change how I practice medicine. I have and always will focus on building relationships and helping folks with disease prevention and management. It’s about listening with a caring heart and fully relating to those sitting across from you ... we’re all in this together, so make the journey count.” w

“Now that I have opened my own practice in a Direct Primary Care (membership) model, I have been able to take insurance out of the equation. I am subsequently able to schedule patients for an hour or more and give them my undivided attention. That is why I love my job so much ... because I truly and genuinely care for other people, and I want to know them on a familial and personal level.”

An Organized New Year ... IT’S A NEW YEAR AND THERE’S NO BETTER

time for some serious purging and home organization. There is so much truth to the familiar phrase, “Out with the old and in with the new.” Being organized and everything having its own “place” gives you a sense of peace, control, and less chaos. Here are some tips, home organizational ideas, and helpful hacks to get the most out of your spaces, niches, and nooks:

You Can Do It! CUSTOM STORAGE BENCH A custom bench with storage brings so many benefits. Whether it’s built under a window, breakfast nook, office, playroom, entryway, or bedroom, they can be made with base cabinet doors, adjustable shelving, and/ or deep drawers. Top it off with a custom upholstery cushion, and you’re good to go.

BEDROOMS AND CLOSETS Give your bedroom some space—declutter and put all the clothes in one place where they belong … in the closet. Instead of investing in heavy, bulky dressers and chest-of-drawers, maximize the bedroom and consider a custom organizational system in your closet, complete with drawers and other proper shelving and storage solutions. Custom closets add resale value to your home as well so it’s a win-win!

ADJUSTABLE SHELVING I continue to preach about custom home organizational solutions and the immense benefits that adjustable shelving can bring— from maximizing the heights of shoe racks in our custom closets, to bookcases and pantries that have multiple and versatile designs.

DESIGNATED PLACE FOR SHOES Inside, outside, or in the garage, the shoes can be the biggest headache to see when you first walk in the door. Invest in a stylish entryway shoe rack or drop zone cabinet to make this area functional and attractive.

DESIGNATED PLAY SPACE Create a specific place in your home for all the little ones’ things, complete with a built-in cabinet (and adjustable shelving), drawers, and/or bins to keep it all tidy.

WALL BEDS Wall beds have been around for a long time and way ahead of the home organization and space-saving game, but WOW are they becoming a bigger trend when trying to maximize space. They bring organization and functionality to any part of your home while optimizing floor space—think home office, guest rooms, playrooms, bonus rooms, media rooms, dens, and more. Wall beds are completely customizable and have features such as foldaway desks, couches that fold beneath the bed, bookcases, nightstands, etc. ... the options are endless! w

SOME OTHER CONSIDERATIONS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DESIGN TEAM: • How many people will need to be accommodated around the pool?

TO MAKE A

• Do you need a storage area for furniture or cushions? • What lighting is needed? • Do you have little ones that need protection from the pool? • Do you need a fence to protect yourself against an attractive nuisance liability? • What are your neighborhood bylaws on additions? • How do you value beauty over maintenance? w

WHO TA LKS A B O UT SW IMMIN G PO O L S IN JA N UA RY ? I do, I do! Let me explain. First of

all, winter is a good time financially to invest in a pool since prices are often lower. Additionally, industry reports indicate that pool sales have continued to rise since 2020—especially in our ideal climate here in the Lake Norman area. A well-maintained and well-landscaped swimming pool and outdoor living area can increase the value of your home as well. There are many things to consider, so I highly recommend setting your goals and intentions now. Today.

WHY? • When putting in a pool you want a reputable company with great referrals. Those companies are booked first. Get on their calendar now. I have a friend in Florida who ended up with a company that did such an awful job they had to start over. Quality is important!

of doing things twice. You save the best trees and foliage that you have before the cranes show up. Often current trees are moved to accommodate the pool, but your landscaper may want to use in another location. Better to move than bulldoze.

• When you plan a pool, it involves landscaping. If the landscaper and the pool company work together you save the time and expense

• You may also want help choosing the finishes, and furniture so that your home flows from the inside to the outside as one cohesive

space. If you bring your interior designer in earlier rather than later you will be on their busy schedule; you will have them available when choices need to be made and they can select furniture and get it on order early. • With current shipping backlogs any material or furniture item could be on backorder. I can tell you from experience, you will have the best outcome if you plan ahead and do not procrastinate.

AUTISM AND HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY—

A Promising Alternative T HE RE IS CURRE N T LY N O "CU R E "

for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but physicians are looking to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as a treatment that is showing great promise in mitigating its symptoms. HBOT targets the source of the condition by treating damage and inflammation in the brain. As a result, parents and children with ASD are seeing promising results. For people with autism, HBOT has shown improvement in behavior, memory, social interaction, language and verbalization, cognitive function, reduction in repetitive behavior, increased eye contact, improved sleep patterns, and improved motor skills.

HBOT helps the ASD brain in many ways:

42

JANUARY 2024

.

The actual cause of ASD is unknown but is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors that affect the brain. Those effects range from increased inflammation to a surplus of synapses or connections between brain cells. Research has shown that in non-ASD brains the number of synapses decreases by 50 percent by late childhood vs 16 percent in ASD brains. HBOT has proven to be a very potent anti-inflammatory and promotes neuroplasticity in the brain. Studies show that the blood flow in the ASD brain is increased in some areas and decreased in other areas vs the non-ASD brain. Additionally, research indicates that in people with ASD, the connections established across brain regions stay connected for a much longer period of

time than non-ASD brains. These connection times are very short in non-ASD brains but may last up to 20 seconds in an ASD brain. There is an association between the connection time and ASD severity. This may be the limiting factor in allowing the ASD brain to shift from one stimulus to another, causing a sensory overload to lights, pain, sounds, tastes, smells, etc. Previous research has shown that microglial cells, which are the immune cells of the nerves in the brain responsible for fighting infection, is always activated resulting in constant inflammation in the brain. Dr Efrati and his group published a research article in 2022 that studied autism in an autism animal model. Efrati’s group reported that HBOT reduces inflammation and improves blood and oxygen supply to the brain thus improving brain function. The gastrointestinal system is another area that is often affected with a correlation between incidence and severity of ASD symptoms. This is associated with high levels of inflammation and an overgrowth of certain harmful bacteria and fungal organisms. HBOT helps reestablish healthy gut flora, reduces the associated inflammation, and heals the intestinal lining. w LKN EXPERT

Winter ZUCCHINI BREAD *

TH E RE ’S N OT H IN G B E T T E R T H A N T HE S M E LL of freshly baked bread

wafting through your home on a cold winter’s day ... except for eating it! This sweet, spiced bread may taste indulgent, but it’s packed with healthy ingredients and there are only 150 calories in an average slice. Not only is zucchini a great source of vitamins and potassium, but applesauce makes this bread moist and helps sweeten the loaf so you don’t need much sugar (and there is no white sugar in this recipe, bonus!) Plus, healthy whole wheat flour kicks off the recipe— Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9x5 loaf pan with baking spray. 1

Whisk together the oil, brown sugar, eggs, applesauce, vanilla, and zucchini until well combined. 2

Sift together the whole wheat flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. 3

DID YOU KNOW?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is January 15, but the holiday in his memory is held on the third Monday of January. Sometimes it falls on his actual birthday. Dr. MLK Jr. was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for MLK Day began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later.

We know how busy life can get—kids, work, family, friends … sometimes just getting dinner on the table is a Herculean feat! So in an effort to save our readers some time, effort, and money here are a few tips, tricks, and hacks that might come in handy in your busy world! Absorbing what? Our kitchen sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria. To sterilize, wet it completely and microwave for one minute. You can also run it through the dishwasher. The extreme heat will zap any bacteria growing in your sponges. Repeat this every few days.

TIPS, Yucky Yoga Mats Not only do yoga mats get damp from perspiration but also from being placed on floors, especially at fitness centers. To keep your mat fresh and germ-free, simply wipe it down using a cloth with equal parts water and apple cider vinegar.

Don’t let the bed bugs bite! Wash your bedding at least once a week on a hot setting. While you sleep, your body sheds dead skin cells and these accumulate in your bedding. Most down and synthetic pillows can be machine washed and dried on low heat. Note that water needs to be 140°F or higher to kill dust mites, so make sure your water heater isn’t set too low.

Wood and Water We love our wooden spoons, but they can suffer in the kitchen—especially if they get put into the dishwasher or are left to soak. When they’re exposed to too much moisture, mildew and bacteria quickly find a home. To keep your wooden utensils clean and fresh, rub them with a slice of lemon and coat with vegetable or coconut oil.

Curtain Call Curtains are often a haven for spiders, dust, and germs. Most curtains are machine washable and should be cleaned once a month or so. Not only will they look and smell great, but they will also be germ-free for longer. And don’t forget your shower curtains!

CREATING A ZEN GARDEN AT HOME M E R R I A M -W E B ST E R ’ S D E F I N E S Z E N as “a state of

calm attentiveness in which one’s actions are guided by intuition rather than by conscious effort” and that the transmission of wisdom is supposed to be nonverbal. Zen is an ancient branch of Buddhism but has morphed into a catch-all term meant to evoke calmness, meditative states, enlightenment, and intuitive insights. Zen gardens are simple and are intended to get the most meaning with the fewest materials. Often called “rock gardens,” they usually consist of sand, rocks, and sometimes water. In North Carolina’s mild climate, you can enjoy an outdoor Zen garden yearround or if you prefer, create it indoors ... the magic is the same! Here are a few things to meditate on:

54

JANUARY 2024

.

DO SOME RESEARCH. You’ll want some visual inspiration so search online to see what elements you may want to include such as soft lighting, stones, or a fountain (though not one of the basic elements in a Zen garden, the sound of water is therapeutic). ZEN GARDENS ARE STRUCTURED AROUND SEVEN GUIDING PRINCIPLES. Your Zen garden should promote most or all these concepts: Austerity (Koko), Simplicity (Kanso), Naturalness (Shinzen), Asymmetry (Fukinsei), Mystery or Subtlety (Yugen), Magical or Unconventional (Datsuzoku), and Stillness (Seijaku). SIMPLICITY IS ZEN! A Zen space should be simple and uncluttered—it needs to elicit a feeling of calm. Create your space with calmness in mind and with just a few decorative items. Remember, in Zen, less is more!

lakenormanw oman.com

WHAT PART OF YOUR YARD OR HOME IS BEST SUITED FOR MEDITATION? Choose a peaceful, out-of-the-way corner or narrow side yard. Make sure it’s aesthetically pleasing and quiet. PLANTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME. While plants are typically not the focus of Zen gardens, natural botanicals and colors are soothing to the soul. You can plant some bright yellow blossoms that represent yang energy, and dark green plants balance it with their yin energy. Herbs are always a great choice, too, adding some aroma therapy to the mix. w
