WITH THE SONGBIRDS SINGING IN THE EARLY mornings, da odils poking their green shoots up through the ground, and ducklings paddling furiously to keep up with momma duck, spring is the perfect time for new beginnings. e thing is, though, new beginnings aren’t always easy, are they? ey involve change after all, and change can be downright scary. ere have been a number of times in my life when fear of change held me back. And though I was able to eventually nd a way forward, for many, the fear of change leads to missed experiences and opportunities.

I wish we all could be more like my dog Goose. Goose came from a hoarder situation in which he lived in a home with 26 other dogs. He was chained and had little interaction with humans. Feeding time was a free for all in which he scrambled for whatever food was thrown within reach.

I don’t know about you, but had I never ventured further than a few feet from a stake in the yard, I would be angry and resentful. Had I fought with 26 others for nourishment, I would be quick to snarl and growl. Had I lived that sad, hopeless existence, I would be distrustful and withdrawn. But not Goose.

When I met Goose, he wouldn’t make eye contact, and he looked confused and insecure. He was so sweet and docile though, I had to give him a new start. ankfully, instead of choosing to be like me, Goose decided to embrace the change—to move forward, secure in the notion

he deserved love. He does this by surprise licking attacks that land square on our mouths, and if we’ll let him, by using our ears to satisfy his ear-nibbling fetish (he nibbles the ear of our Pit Bull too). He follows us everywhere—respecting one’s privacy is not his thing. Granted, he’s not the most intellectual of canines—he still wears a look of confusion (what we call the “Goose face”), and when the front bell rings he runs helter skelter to the back door and barks ferociously at the person who isn’t there. But what Goose lacks in brainpower he makes up in devotion, loving us with every ber of his being and never letting us forget we are the center of his world.

Somehow, Goose innately knows that only by letting go of the past can room be made for better things. He isn’t angry about his rst year…he isn’t even upset that last night, I forgot to sprinkle his food with bacon bits. He spends no time on yesterday at all, he simply takes life as it comes.

Goose didn’t get o to a great beginning. But from a bleak existence lled with hopelessness and heartbreak to an overabundance of ears to chew on and laps to lay in, Goose has not only transformed himself, he’s also transforming our hearts. Which makes me wonder: maybe Goose is the smart one after all? w

Life takes practice!

And though they don’t always come wrapped in a shiny red bow, the lessons we learn along the way are invaluable gifts that are worth sharing. Here are a few noteworthy examples featured in this issue:

GSD—GET STUFF DONE

HER DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP:

Annie

HANSON

Annie Hanson is the CEO/Founder of The Closet Niche located at 197 Byers Creek Road, Suite H, in Mooresville. You can connect with Annie and her entire team at www.theclosetniche.com or give her a call at 704.635.1150.

life as a leader

FIRST JOB: Sewing socks in a hosiery mill and waitressing at a pizzeria

BEST CAREER ADVICE: Follow your dreams and take a leap of faith!

BEST TIME SAVER: Amazon Prime

ORIGINALLY FROM Mt. Airy, Annie has been in Lake Norman for over 24 years now. A family friend told her about a closet company looking for a designer and although hesitant at rst, she jumped in with both feet. “I worked for two custom closet companies,” she explains, “where I learned a lot of do’s and don’ts in the industry. I constantly had customers, friends, and family asking why I don’t do this for myself, so with a lot of prayer, faith, and hard work, I started e Closet Niche in my garage in 2022 and by July of that same year, I had opened my design studio in Talbert Business Park.”

Leadership is the ability to influence your team to direct their efforts toward the achievement of the companies’ goals and visions while inspiring, empowering, and challenging the team to be the best they can be. I try to lead by example while having faith and instilling confidence in my amazing team that they can accomplish more than even they believe.”

Both of Annie’s parents set a prime example when it came to work ethic—sometimes working two jobs to provide for the family. It was her mother, though, that in uenced her sales and leadership attributes the most. “My mother worked for BB&T Bank for over 34 years,” she shares, “excelling in every task and goal she encountered. Her hard work, dedication, and commitment to the company, her customers, the community, and her family were truly inspirational.”

Like any good leader, Annie doesn’t ask anything of her team that she’s not willing and able to do herself ... this goes for installations, too. “I require all my o ce sta to go out in the eld and participate in an installation so we all have a better understanding of each other’s tasks and challenges. I would say I am a progress- and performance-focused leader but one that also must be motivational and supportive.”

e relationship with her customers is more important to her than the sale, Annie will tell you. “People buy from people they like,” she smiles. “Always remember to treat others as you would want to be treated and have faith that the rest will fall into place. I love what I’m doing, and I love my community ... after my rst year in business, I decided to start a campaign where a portion of our proceeds each month go to a local non-pro t organization. I believe so strongly in giving back and paying it forward ... support, love, gratitude, and kindness are the essentials.” w

WISH I HAD MORE: Five more ME’s so I could be in multiple places at the same time ... can I get an “AMEN” from every working mom!

FAVORITE SNACK: Veggies and dip

CAREER HIGHLIGHT: Winning Best of The Lake 2023

LIFE/WORK MANTRA: “Life’s about changes, nothing ever stays the same.”

LAST THING YOU RESEARCHED ON THE INTERNET: Super Mario birthday decorations and UNC Pembroke apparel

COMFORT FOOD: I love seafood!

SEVEN guiding principles OF GOAL SETTING

prepare

HERE WE ARE WELL INTO 2024 ALREADY, and I’m sure that many of us have set personal and professional goals this year with some coming to fruition and some going by the wayside. I’ve always looked for ways to lessen the chances of the latter. So, I started developing a mental checklist of guiding principles to help me through my goal-setting process. In the spirit of growth and renewal, I share with you these ideologies:

Mike Gri n is the President and CEO of the Leavitt Elite Insurance Group and resides in Cornelius. With 15 locations in North Carolina, you can reach Mike or a member of his team for all your insurance needs at 888.230.0030.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Preparation is the process of identifying the necessary steps and timeline to complete your goal. Start with broad thoughts that can be worked into narrowed ideas.  is process will bring visual clarity for the task at hand.

reflect

Seek feedback from someone you respect, trust, or who is required to move the goal to the next stage. Conversation can help amend, con rm, or eliminate ideas or steps for goal enhancement. You have to approach feedback with humility and an open mind. Once you receive your feedback, take the necessary time to re ect and implement any changes.

work

Goals give you a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Organize your day with a speci c time to work on your goal but have exibility to handle other projects or unanticipated tasks. Doing so can help drive focus and leaves you with a sense of pride.

enjoy

Laugh with your friends, co-workers, and people all around you. Carry the attitude that having a positive day is often what you make of it. A positive attitude can be contagious, brings people together, and creates ful llment.

share

Not only does sharing your goal with others help with your motivation to get the job done, but it often creates an environment where people want to become part of the goal. Sharing can create service opportunities, build stronger relationships, expand knowledge, and enhance your emotional intelligence.

recover

Often, you may nd yourself in need of taking a physical break. You aren’t built to go-go-go all the time. Taking a few minutes, hours, days, or an extended vacation can be good for the soul.

celebrate

Celebrate small steps and large leaps in addition to the completion of your goal. Personal or collaborate celebration creates a renewed energy and con dence that you can succeed. w

STAGING A pet friendly HOME

WHILE WE CHERISH OUR PETS, having them around when showing a home can dissuade potential buyers. Although we hope the property speaks for itself, not all buyers share the same sentiment. Here are some staging suggestions tailored for homes that have pets:

Discover a solution to eliminate odor. I particularly recommend plug-in air fresheners as well as essential oil di users. Some essential oils known to enhance air quality include eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, cinnamon, tea tree, clove, and citrus scents.

Ensure that litter boxes are cleaned regularly and prior to showings. Consider investing in an automatic litter box or relocate the litter boxes outside or to a concealed garage area. Remove scratching posts and toys and conceal pet food and water bowls.

Attempt to relocate pets from the premises during showings, especially during the initial days when most showings occur. If possible, arrange for pets to stay with family or friends temporarily. If that is not feasible, con ning pets to crates is essential, but be mindful that a barking dog in a crate is distracting and can deter a potential buyer.

Last, but de nitely not least, please clean up the yard. Buyers always walk through the yard to get a view of every angle of the home. A surprise for their shoes would not be a welcome discovery.

Luxury Broker with Ivester Jackson

Christie’s International Realty, Abi Goldberg is committed to excellence in staging and selling your home. Connect with Abi at 704.526.6199 or via abigoldberg@ivesterjackson.com for all your real estate needs.

Prioritize cleanliness by maintaining a rigorous cleaning schedule. Vacuum daily, including furniture, and consider professional carpet cleaning before listing the property. Utilize pet-speci c cleaning tools such as a pet hair remover roller for furniture, and ensure that oors are mopped regularly.

In conclusion, selling a home when pets are involved requires proactive measures to create a welcoming environment for potential buyers. By prioritizing cleanliness and minimizing pet presence during showings, sellers can maximize their chances of a successful sale. With careful planning and attention to detail, pet owners can navigate the selling process with con dence, ultimately achieving their goal of nding the perfect buyer for their treasured home. w

My Cup Runneth Over

“I’m thrilled to share that I have a new office space as of the fall of 2023. It’s in the newly renovated Blake House off Torrence Chapel Road. It has been a wonderful move with great lighting, plenty of space, and an incredible healing energy. This transition was also to support a focus on going deeper, via 5-Day Safe and Sound Intensives. These are nervous system balancing and rewiring intensives that bring the client’s system back into more balance. It’s also proven to be quite successful for couples, groups, and families. It is amazing to see the changes in people’s lives ... they are able to heal from the nervous system up.”

The Perfect Blend

co talk:

A sit-down chat with DR. TIFFANY BROWN-BUSH of Doc Brown-Bush Integrative Therapy

Savoring the First Sip

“I am an Army brat, so I had the good fortune of growing up all over the place. I spent middle school and high school overseas in Bamberg, Germany, and then graduated from UNC Charlotte, Capella University, and Trinity School of Natural Health. Having completed numerous post-graduate studies, I continue to learn and grow in my field ... lifelong learning is imperative!”

Healing Vibes

“I have always been interested in  self-improvement. When I was about 16, I began reading self-help books and seeking mental health support. Nutrition and exercise have also been a guiding force in my life. In fact, my mother taught exercise classes when I was growing up. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40, I began to take my health – and the health of those around me –even more seriously. As a naturopath, I want people to know the true healing potential of the mind and body ... there is so much more to healing than traditional Western medicine allows.”

“It’s been challenging for me to consistently find balance. I have struggled with burnout and being overworked, which was quite hard on my immune system. Knowing how crucial selfcare is, I now make it a priority with daily neuro-fitness strategies such as tapping, journaling, and prayer. I exercise daily, eat a very healthy diet, avoid toxic energy, take multiple recovery days, and practice healthier boundaries. My health needs much more care than I’d previously understood, thus it’s important that I find time to unwind. I’m a fan of comedy, art galleries, and museums ... beautiful things are good for my system and my soul.”

A Spot of Tea, Please

“I’m obsessed with matcha! It is loaded with antioxidants and brain-boosting benefits. I’ve been perfecting my favorite way to sip it. I make it ‘bulletproof’ with MCT oil (great for brain health!) and coconut cream. I’ve also been spending a lot of time outdoors— tending to all of my newly-planted summer bushes and trees. It’s such a rewarding hobby and it helps to balance my nervous system.”

pawsome PET PERKS

KEEPING IT TIDY IN THE KITCHEN

A built-in feeding station is placed in a bottom cabinet or drawer so all you have to do is just open the door or slide out the drawer when it's feeding time, then push it back out of sight. Similarly, a pull-out cabinet (often used for a garbage can) is perfect for dry food storage.

THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT PETS are family! ey take our whole hearts, and our lives are enriched because of them. Sadly, shelters are overcrowded and in desperate need of all kinds of aid. Whether it’s through nancial/pet supply donations, volunteer e orts, or fostering, there are many organizations in our area where you could lend a hand. ere’s also a lot of opportunity for community service projects for schools, the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, junior leadership programs, and senior citizen groups.

Listed at the end of this article are some area nonpro ts that you can support; meanwhile, we here at ClosetsbyDesign love our fur-babies, too, and have some creative ideas for making your home more pet friendly. From mudrooms to food storage solutions to cozy custom built-ins, consider the following for your furry family members:

LEASHES AND TOYS AND TREATS, OH MY!

Mudrooms are a great drop-zone for shoes, jackets, keys, etc. but it’s also the perfect spot for your pup—complete with dog kennel and discrete storage spaces for chew toys, leashes, towels, and other necessities. A small shoe caddy is super-handy for organizing.

THE CAT’S MEOW

You will forever have your cat’s respect when you create this cat haven treehouse—no more knocking things over or destroying plants ... now they have all they need to roam free and have outdoor fun indoors!

Laura VanSickle and the VanSickle family celebrate 20 years of creating custom closets, garages, and other organized spaces (including petfriendly ones!) in the Greater Charlotte area through their company ClosetsbyDesign-Charlotte. Visit their showroom at 1108A Continental Blvd. in Charlotte, their website at charlotte.closetsbydesign.com, or call 704.588.7272 for more information.

SLEEPY TIME

What’s cuter and cozier than a dog bed built into a cabinet?! It’s an attractive, space-saving alternative for their rest area, and it gives dogs an extra sense of safety and security as well.

BACKYARD FUN FOR EVERYONE

Your kids will love this as much as the pups, but everyone will have summer fun in this backyard puppy playground ... a cool pool completes the build. w

INFORMATIVE INFO ON Dental Implants W H O K N E W ?

IN THE PAST 25 YEARS, IMPLANT DENTISTRY HAS GROWN by leaps and bounds. It has gone from a rare and unique procedure to one that has become part of everyday dentistry.

e father of modern implant dentistry was a Swedish physician studying blood ow in bone during the 1950s. During his experiments, he would place titanium cylinders into the bone to help with his measurements and, ultimately, he found that the titanium could not be removed. e cylinders had become fused to the bone. Using this new discovery, he spent years designing a practical application, and in 1965, he placed the rst titanium implant into a human mouth and the eld has been evolving ever since.

THE ADVANTAGES OF IMPLANTS

Implants have many advantages and allow for restorations that were not previously possible. Prior to implants, missing teeth were replaced with dentures or bridges. Dentures are generally disliked because of their lack of retention and stability, as well as the fact that they are removed at night. Bridges o er a non-removable option with more stability; however, you have to grind down adjacent teeth to allow the bridge to t, and maintenance can be challenging. Additionally, bridges cannot be used to replace the most posterior teeth since there is no other tooth to “bridge” to. Implants are free standing, easily cleansable, permanent restorations. e implant(s) can be used to support one tooth, multiple teeth, or even an entire arch of teeth. Some implants require a couple of months of healing prior to having a tooth placed on it, while other implants can have teeth placed immediately, depending on the speci c situation.

WHAT TO EXPECT

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN ORAL SURGEON

On the day of surgery, the surgeon will make a gentle incision in the gingival tissue and prepare the bone for the implant. After it is in place, a healing cap is put on the implant and the gum tissue is sutured around it, allowing the implant to heal. is is when the special properties of titanium take over and the implant starts to fuse to the bone. After 6-12 weeks, the implant will be integrated and unable to be removed. It is now ready for the new crown.

When looking for an oral surgeon to place dental implants, they should be pro cient in a few key areas. Successful implants are based on extractions of the non-restorable teeth, good site preparation (bone grafting), and sound implant techniques—including implant brands that use quality materials and have a long track record of use and success. Make sure the provider you choose ts these criteria, and you can look forward to having dental implants restore your smile and oral health with as much ease as possible. w

MOMPRENEUR RULE #1

Taking care of clients is a blessing. Be there for them!

Finding dream homes, helping design or stage a space, marketing a client’s biggest blessing (their house!) is my job, but the client’s story — their current season we get to be a part of — is one of my most sacred purposes in life, and I strive to always be in service of others. is is not only my career, it’s how I envision God empowering me to serve our communities.

MOMPRENEUR RULE #2

Be inspired by the littles in your life.

Shana Harris

THIS MONTH, WE HEAR FROM LKNW

MOMPRENEUR, SHANA HARRIS, commercial/ residential broker and founding member of SERHANT, North Carolina with The Dearing Team. Showcasing the various elements of entrepreneurship, Shana is not only a licensed real estate broker, designer, and stager, but she is also a Transformational Mindset Life & Business Coach through her company Driven Duos. You can reach Shana at 828.707.2773 or harris@serhant.com.

My children are the driving force behind my commitment to excellence both professionally and personally. eir presence instills in me an unyielding determination to provide them with the best possible future. Witnessing their growth and development fuels my desire to be the best version of myself—setting an example of hard work, perseverance, and resilience. Balancing the demands of parenthood with the challenges of entrepreneurship is far from easy, but my kids serve as a constant reminder that it’s more than worth the e ort.

MOMPRENEUR RULE #3

When all else fails, get moving. And then, slow down.

When I was a kid growing up in Asheville, roller skating and basketball were my passions. Even now, skating and shooting hoops are two of my favorite ways to get moving. When I have some alone time, I love going for walks and just being out in nature. I’m also passionate about working out, indulging in a relaxing bath, or spending a few moments journaling. All of this helps me unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of my daily life.

MOMPRENEUR RULE #4

Believe in true love, fate, and trust your gut. Always.

Meeting my husband was a profound experience that taught me the depths of connection both physically and spiritually. From our rst encounter, there was an undeniable electrical charge — it was as if our souls recognized each other, and we just knew that we were destined to do life together, no matter the challenges. We stay rock solid through the highs and lows, and our relationship has not only deepened my understanding of love but has also enriched my spiritual and emotional resilience, which adds so much to the beautiful tapestry of personal growth and shared experiences we continue to weave together. w

SWEET AS HONEY.

Honey has so many uses besides being delicious and healthy. It never spoils and is extremely resistant to bacteria. Ancient Egyptians used honey as a natural bandage to protect cuts and burns from infection. Today, honey is still used as a natural treatment for dandru , stomach ulcers, sore throat, and cough.

Bees?Buzz WHAT’S ALL THE

WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE EARTH’S ECOSYSTEM AND HOW it needs to be maintained, we often tend to focus on the human footprint and the roles played by other animals and birds. Consequently, we overlook the roles insects play in making the world a livable place. They are, however, quietly—and sometimes not-so-quietly—doing their jobs, and some are making quite the buzz about it. Let’s take a look, for example, at our friend the honey bee:

LIGHT A CANDLE.

SPREAD THE LOVE.

Bees are critical to the process of pollination. While some plants can pollinate themselves, others rely on insects, birds, the wind, and animals to spread the pollen.

e other product from bees that has found widespread use is wax. Besides candles, beeswax is also used in a variety of cosmetic products such as cold creams, moisturizers, lotions, lipsticks, and salves.

A DELICATE ECOSYSTEM.

Bees are doing their job to ensure that the soil remains cultivable, the air breathable, and the food edible. ey play a vital role in our very delicate ecosystem. Today, these wonderful insects are at risk of becoming endangered, and it is imperative that we do all we can to prevent their extinction. w

PROWELLNESS FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC

GSD—Get Stu Done—is a great motivational acronym and one Dr. Robin Owings lives by. As founder and owner of ProWeness Family Chiropractic in Lincolnton, Robin dons a large smile when she says, “Don’t wait for tomorrow what you can get done today.” First and foremost, she advises, is to just get out of bed with excitement for what the day holds. “Mind over maress,” she says. “Be active! And always be the reason for somebody to smile.”

Having weathered many storms in her life, Robin is no stranger to the importance of healthy mind, healthy body. It’s quite imperative, she’s found, that you continue to keep your thoughts positive and your body moving. Her ability to survive the almost un-survivable was firmly put to the test ten years ago this month.

“I had a total-loss house re on April 5, 2014,” she shares. “I only had my car left and the clothes on my back ... I lost two pets in the re as well. It was the worst thing, but the best thing, that ever happened to me. I experienced rsthand the goodness that exists in the world. People who I didn’t even know were reaching out to me, sending care packages, and praying for me. It was all very healing, and I did have peace about it. I know that the Lord does not make mistakes and that something good was going to come out of the tragedy. In fact, I received a settlement from the insurance company and that helped me buy my business and make the move to Charlotte—which has allowed me to fully enjoy life, family, and business ownership.”

Robin’s faith and acceptance of what is put in front of her actually helped launch her initial interest in the chiropractic eld. When she was a junior in college, she was in a car accident and her injuries led her to see a chiropractor. She fell in love with the entire concept: “I had always known that I wanted to do something in the healthcare eld and help others,” she explains. “I was fascinated with the philosophy and the natural way of healing without drugs and surgery. What I really want to accomplish with my work is making Lincoln County a healthier place in which to live and to educate the community on what chiropractic care encompasses. It is not only about neck and back pain; it’s about freeing pressure on the nerves

Greenville, South Carolina, is where Robin grew up, and she attended Clemson University for her undergraduate studies—obtaining a degree in biological sciences with a minor in chemistry. She then received her doctorate from Sherman College of Chiropractic. Robin strives to make a di erence in people’s lives, and it gives her great pleasure to see them get back to living a pain-free life where they can accomplish their goals and dreams.

“ e challenging part,” she admits, “is the day-to-day running of the business and making sure that the patients are not only satis ed with their care and seeing positive results, but that we have a happy team of employees who love what they do. I am proud of myself for learning how to run a successful business and helping change the community. I love giving back and was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2022 by the Chamber of Commerce. We continue to sponsor and/or participate in many charity events throughout the year.”

Particularly inspired by her parents, Robin is grateful for her strong upbringing. “My mom is my hero ... she is optimistic, happy, and a joy to be around. She spreads light and love wherever she goes, and it’s contagious! My father always encouraged me to be the best I could be. He instilled in me to work hard and earn all things in life because you won’t value it if it’s just given to you.”

Robin loves all things outdoors and when not in the o ce or engaged in philanthropic e orts, you will likely nd her enjoying the lake, hiking our beautiful mountains and trails, or in search of a sunny St. Somewhere. “I love to travel,” she adds, “and am lucky that my practice management group is based out of Clearwater, Florida, so I’m down there quite a bit. I have also taken multiple trips to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Costa Rica, and Antigua. I just need water to swim in, lots of sunshine, and good food. I nd that travel is therapeutic for my soul, and it all circles back to Eat Well, Move Well, ink Well ... even if it’s while soaking up the sun ... make that ESPECIALLY while soaking up the sun!” w

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOG TRAINER

SELECTING A DOG TRAINER IS A SIGNIFICANT DECISION for any devoted dog owner. It’s not just about looking at credentials or going by a friend’s recommendation. The key is to understand and align with the trainer’s underlying philosophy, as this profoundly influences your dog’s training experience and their role in your family.

Understanding a Trainer’s Philosophy

A trainer’s philosophy is more than just their training techniques. It re ects their beliefs about dog behavior and learning, shaping how they interact with dogs and interpret their responses. If a trainer can’t clearly articulate their philosophy and the reasoning behind their methods, consider it a red ag.

Why Philosophy Matters

Understanding a trainer’s philosophy is crucial for several reasons:

Alignment With Your Values:

Consistency:

It’s essential that you are comfortable with the training methods used. e trainer’s approach should resonate with your views on your dog’s needs.

Dogs thrive on consistency. If the methods you use at home di er from your trainer’s, it can confuse your dog and hinder their progress. It’s vital to understand and follow the program even when you’re not in a training session.

Effective Outcomes:

Building Trust:

When the trainer’s approach aligns with both the dog and the owner, training becomes more e ective, leading to quicker and more lasting results.

Being on the same page as your trainer fosters a trust-based relationship. It boosts your con dence in their methods and ensures they appreciate your support and understanding.

Selecting the Right Trainer

Here are some tips to help you choose the best trainer for your furry friend:

Inquire About Their Philosophy

Ask direct questions about their training philosophy. A good trainer will be open and willing to discuss their approach and beliefs. Do not guide the trainer to what you want to hear. Let them explain every aspect until you’re happy.

Research Their Methods

Investigate the speci c training methods the trainer uses. Are they assuming every dog is the same and every dog should be trained the same way?

Check Reviews and References

While personal recommendations from friends are valuable, also look for online reviews. Ask how many dogs your trainer has trained in person.

Ensure Good Communication

A good trainer should communicate well and involve you in the training process. E ective communication is crucial for transferring skills from the trainer to the owner.

The choice of your dog’s trainer is not a decision to be taken lightly. Their philosophy should align with your beliefs about dog training. This alignment, coupled with their expertise and your active involvement, sets the stage for a successful and enjoyable training experience for both you and your dog.

Choosing a trainer who respects and embraces the natural abilities and instincts of dogs, and who approaches training as a collaborative e ort rather than a command-based process, is crucial. is approach not only aligns with a more humane and e ective training philosophy but also ensures that your dog’s training journey is as enjoyable and enriching as possible. w

Social Skills:

Learning to Share and Care

Dogs are social creatures, and they can teach your kids a thing or two about making friends and being kind. Taking care of a pet requires sharing responsibilities, understanding non-verbal cues, and developing empathy. ese are invaluable skills that will help your child in every walk of life.

Empathy:

Understanding and Compassion

Caring for a dog helps children understand and respond to the needs of others. Feeding, grooming, and looking after a dog’s health makes kids more responsible and compassionate. ey learn that their actions directly impact the well-being of their furry friend.

Family Activities:

Fun for the

Whole Pack

Dogs are a great way to bring the family together. Planning dog-friendly outings, such as hikes or beach trips, are more fun; and even simple activities like grooming or training sessions can be fun family bonding experiences. w

SPECIAL NOTE

Not all dogs are the same and neither are families. Consider your family’s lifestyle, living space, and the age of your children when choosing a breed. Research and consult with professionals to find a dog that matches your family’s energy and temperament. Remember, it’s not just about what a dog can do for your family. Dogs are living beings and have their own needs. Ensure your home is ready for a new dog ... they need lots of attention, exercise, and love to be happy and healthy.

PREGNANCY

WHAT TO EXPECT

WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING

ARE YOU EXPECTING A BABY and not sure about how this impacts your dog? Well, you’re not alone. We regularly receive calls from dog owners who are experiencing stress and uncertainty when it comes to introducing a new baby to their home—especially when their dog has been the only baby of the family!

For example, dogs have a highly sensitive sense of smell. We have had multiple clients whose dogs detected a pregnancy a few weeks before their humans even knew they were pregnant. Changes in your mood can also a ect your dog’s response, particularly if you become more irritable or anxious— natural feelings during pregnancy.

It’s important to take a few simple proactive steps to prepare your dog for your new arrival. Just like some humans, most dogs can sense changes in their environment, including changes in their owner’s emotions, behavior, and routine. During pregnancy, even the hormones in your body can impact your dog’s behavior and emotions.

As you progress through the months, you may be less able to participate in activities such as going for walks or playing with your pup like you usually do, and this can lead to boredom and frustration which in turn may manifest in destructive behaviors such as chewing or excessive barking.

44 APRIL 2024 . lakenormanwoman.com

To reduce stress for your dog during pregnancy, consider the following:

First and foremost, dogs love consistency so to help them develop their self-soothing skills, gradually introduce small changes to your dog’s routine; it will help them adjust to the new and unpredictable environment that is soon to come.

Involve your dog in the pregnancy process. Dogs are social creatures, and they crave attention and interaction from their owners. Allow them to explore the baby’s room, introducing them to all the new sounds and smells.

Ensure that your dog is welltrained and understands basic commands like sit, stay, and come. This can help you manage their behavior during pregnancy and after the baby arrives.

It’s a good idea to have some rules in place such as how and when to meet the baby and will the dog be allowed in the nursery.

Some dogs may become more anxious or nervous, while others may become more protective or even aggressive. Address any behavior changes early on and seek professional help if needed. w

HEALING paws

While we are all familiar with dogs leading the blind, did you know that they can also alert diabetics to glucose levels; epileptics to seizure onset; or migraine sufferers to their next debilitating headache? They also work wonders with military vets and others who deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other psychological issues.

Service dogs and therapy dogs differ in that service dogs are specially trained to do tasks that help the person with disabilities— everything from opening doors and turning off lights to going for emergency help. A therapy dog is often someone’s pet that is friendly, mild tempered, and socialized. These dogs are the ones that visit nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and other institutions. We are focusing our attention here on service dogs:

The cost of getting a service dog can vary. There may be travel expenses, application fees, equipment fees, and the actual cost of the dog. It can run as high as $20,000 or more to train and place a service dog, and costs can escalate quickly for people with very specialized needs. However, there are programs that place dogs with little or no cost to the owner, relying on fundraising, donations, and volunteer efforts to offset at least some of the expenses.

Receiving a registered service dog can take months or even years. Once the application process is completed, approved candidates are put in a pool of applicants. Organizations specializing in service dogs take their jobs seriously and go to extreme measures to match the appropriate person to the appropriate dog, which can be difficult and time-consuming.

While any breed can become a service dog, training a family pet for service is extremely difficult and rarely successful. The dog

needs to be between 16 and 36 months and must pass rigorous health and temperament screenings before training even begins. Because of the very specialized nature of service dogs, few family pets make it through the program.

Getting around in public is not always easy with a service dog. Unfortunately, owners and their dogs can be met with quite a bit of resistance. Owners may have to reiterate or reassert their rights when gaining access to public places. (The Americans with Disabilities Act guarantees the right of a person with a qualifying disability to be accompanied by their individually trained Assistance Animal in public venues. More information can be found at www.ada.gov.)

Training is life-long. This unique bond between owner and service dog must be nurtured and reinforced. And, as with any pet, their living environment must be suitable—a loving home, proper nutrition and exercise, and access to routine medical care. w
