As the days grow longer and the mesas come alive with color, spring is the perfect time to reconnect—with nature, with neighbors, and with the activities that make Los Alamos such a special place to live. On behalf of Los Alamos County Community Services, we are excited to share the Spring Activity Guide, highlighting programs, events, and opportunities designed to support healthy, active, and connected lifestyles for all ages.
This season is filled with opportunities to get outside and get involved. Events such as planetarium shows, golfing, and volunteer projects can be found. Other activities, from youth sports and recreation programs to fitness classes, aquatics, and arts activities, spring offers something for everyone. We’re especially excited about our seasonal community events, outdoor programs, and opportunities to enjoy our parks, trails, and open spaces as they come back to life after winter.
We ask for your patience as the Walkup Aquatic Center Main Pool goes through a much need pool shell renovation. This project is critical to keep the pool operational for years to come. Our team is very aware of the project impacts on your ability to use the facility over the past several years and we are hopeful that this one is the last for a while. Please take advantage of the arrangements we have made at one of our local pools.
Thank you for being part of the Los Alamos community and for supporting our programs and facilities. We look forward to seeing you this spring—out on the fields, in our facilities, on the trails, and at events throughout the County. Here’s to a vibrant, active, and healthy spring in Los Alamos!
Warm regards,

To encourage the integration of art into the architecture of municipal structures, increase the general public awareness of art, to visually enhance the community, to capture a part of our history for future generations, to promote the establishment of a collection of art with the works of artists who live or work, or who have lived or worked in Los Alamos County having a priority. The Art in Public Places fund is created for the express purposes of acquiring, installing and maintaining county-owned works of art and for the administrative support, cataloging, display and use attendant to the County's ownership of the works of art.

The Art in Public Places Board is commissioning artist J Muzacz to install a glass tiled mosaic mural on the south-facing wall of the Los Alamos Justice Center. His design was developed through a multi-step public feedback process and celebrates native flora and fauna of Los Alamos. What makes this mural unique is its interactive creation process. Residents of all ages will be invited to help assemble sections of the mosaic during a hands-on community workday anticipated during the summer of 2026.

In response to a request from the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization, the Art in Public Places Board supported the creation of a functional art gate to improve safety and enhance the stairwell area at the north side of the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Following a competitive public call for art and strong community input, “Los Alamos Heritage Gate” was selected. Installation is anticipated in March 2026.

The Art in Public Places Board is in the early stages of planning a Semi-Quincentennial Public Art Contest and Exhibit in partnership with Step Up Gallery at the Mesa Public Library. Scheduled for summer 2026, the exhibit will invite artists to submit original works celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. The show will include a public voting component, and selected artworks may be considered for acquisition into the County’s public art collection. Stay tuned for your chance to participate in this creative celebration of history, heritage, and community!

The Art in Public Places Board is purchasing a new sculpture for installation at the entrance of the Los Alamos Nature Center. The selected piece, “Raven Dialog, Friendly Advice” by Abiquiú artist Star York, was chosen through a public input process, including a community survey conducted during PEEC’s 2025 Earth Day celebration. The artwork will be mounted on a natural stone base to enhance its visibility and presence at the site. Installation is anticipated in January 2026.

Staff is working with a contractor to redesign the Canyon Road medians to provide a consistent look across medians, reduce water usage, and minimize herbicide use. Maintaining the medians is challenging due to staff safety, snow operations, and a changing climate. Staff presented to the Transportation Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for additional input.

Library staff have requested a place for outdoor learning. A task order has been issued for design and construction of this project. With input from the community design for an outdoor classroom between Mesa Public Library and the Betty Ehart Senior Center has been developed. Please contact Gwen Kalavaza, Library Manager at gwen.kalavaza@losalamosnm.gov for more information.

As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan, the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan, and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation. The result is to have a single guiding document for the community as we look to the future for managing our trails and open space so all users and abilities can enjoy our natural environment. Sites Southwest held in-person and virtual community listening sessions throughout the process. A presentation was given by Sites Southwest in August 2025 and an update was given to the Parks and Recreation Board in September 2025, with approval to submit to Council. The plan was introduced at County Council on October 7, 2025, and approved on October 28, 2025.

This project is being led by Sites Southwest, focusing on the park and picnic area. The desire is to upgrade the park using the American with Disabilities Act 2010. Areas being evaluated are walking paths, facilities, playgrounds, disk golf and roads. We are looking to renovate this park and see if we need to add, upgrade or improve the experience for the community. An initial listening session was held on June 4, 2025. A second listening session is scheduled for January 14, 2026.

Sites Southwest has been selected as the professional company for this planning exercise. Several Listening sessions and design workshops have been held. The area is from the Flint Soccer Field along North Mesa Drive to the east, where the existing playground is located. This is the largest park area the county has to develop for future use. This project is important as the conversation moves forward about the North Mesa Housing Plan. The project provides a forum to discuss the future needs of North Mesa and to consider long-term uses of the space. Staff presented final drafts to Parks and Recreation Board in December and is scheduled to go before County Council in January 2026.

Beginning May 2025, Spiro Soccer, Senior, and Bun Ryan Fields were scheduled for renovation. The fields were closed during the 2025 sports season, and the project was delayed due to many variables. During 2026, Spirio field will be evaluated in the spring for playability and Bun Ryan Field will be completed. No additional fields will be renovated during 2026. The project will resume the renovation schedule in 2027.

These Play Lots have been identified for renovation to enhance accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and to align with priorities outlined in the Community Services Department (CSD) Integrated Master Plan. The improvements will enhance safety, accessibility, and provide updated amenities for the community. The first public listening sessions were held for both playground sites, inviting resident input. Feedback was additionally captured from 1st graders at Pinion Elementary School and 3rd graders at Mountain and Aspen Elementary. The children provided great feedback on the types of amenities they would like to see incorporated at these playgrounds. In Spring 2024, the draft designs were shared through multiple public engagement opportunities, including displays at both libraries, two in-person public meetings, and prominently placed design boards at both play lots. Following a thorough review of the feedback received, the designs were refined and finalized. Invitations for Bid were sent to interested parties the week of April 28 and closed the first week of June. County Council approved the IFB on July 8th, and the contract was awarded to LA Landscape and More, LLC. Renovation began in the fall of 2025, and is scheduled for completion in April 2026.

The purpose of this project is to renovate and improve the athletic courts to meet ADA accessibility standards and enhance overall safety, usability, and community value. Courts included in this project are tennis, wall ball, basketball, and sand volleyball. Staff expects public input to begin during the winter 2026.

The purpose of this project is to design, develop construction documents, and provide construction administration services for the renovation of San Ildefonso and Grand Canyon Playgrounds. The overall renovations will include ADA/Safety improvements, new play structures, shade, and supporting amenities, with a focus on unstructured play, accessibility, and community engagement. Community listening sessions for public input on the design of these playgrounds will begin early 2026.

This project began a significant upgrade of the community's athletic courts. The North Mesa Tennis and Pickleball Courts were demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. The concrete, post-tension base meets current construction standards, allowing a longer facility lifespan and a better playing experience. The facility houses four pickleball courts and one tennis court. The basketball court at East Park was demolished and replaced with a concrete, post-tension base. Both facilities were updated to meet ADA requirements, ensuring community users feel welcome and enjoy the amenities. Bids were received in December 2024, and LA Landscape and More, LLC was selected for this project. In March 2025, the contractor began the construction process of the new courts, which were completed in October 2025. The courts were rededicated on October 23, 2025.

The previous chiller was reaching the limit of its expected life cycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and was presenting malfunctions. Because of its condition, the previous chiller was not expected to make a reliable skating ice sheet.
Public Works is the lead on the chiller evaluation and replacement and is working with the Recreation Division. The initial evaluation developed a scope of work for the project. Los Alamos County rented a chiller unit for the 2023 – 2024 & 2024 - 2025 seasons. A customdesigned permanent chiller was installed in the Summer of 2025, and electrical tie-ins were completed in September, and was put into service for the 2025 – 2026 season.

The Los Alamos County Larry Walkup Aquatic Center was built in the late 1980’s and while other maintenance projects have taken place in recent years, the plaster shell of the Olympic Pool is the original. Plaster pool shells are designed to have a lifespan of 15 – 20 years; the Aquatic Center pool shell is well beyond its life expectancy and is showing its age.
Los Alamos County Recreation and Public Works team has a completed contract with Lee-sure Pools that includes, but not limited to the following scope of work: remove old plaster, remove and replace rebar if exposed, re-plaster pool, remove and replace pool tile, address tow ledge, install anchor cups, remove and replace pool lights, remove and replace handrails in main pool and therapy pool, install depth markers and “no diving” tiles, remove and replace starting blocks.
The Contract with Lee-sure Pools was presented and approved by County Council in May 2025. This project is currently projected to start in March 2026 through October 2026. Alternative swim locations are being explored to be able to help reduce the impact to the local swimming community.

In addition to the Ice Rink chiller, there is concern for the concrete slab that supports the ice during the winter season, as it is also near its expected life cycle. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued on June 1, 2024; the team received one respondent. An agreement with R&M Construction was executed in August 2024, and the project kickoff meeting was held on August 15, 2024. Two public surveys have been conducted to gauge the importance of a shade structure, and the type of shade structure would be the most beneficial for the space.
On June 10th, staff took the findings and a recommendation for a mono-sloped cover to County Council, where they approved the team to move forward with design.

NV5 is leading this project. The feasibility study has held several feedback meetings and public surveys regarding the project. NV5 is compiling all of the responses and public input. The study is looking at specific fields, alignment, turf, lights, amenities, bleachers, fencing, netting, scoreboxes, and scoreboards. The fields would be upgraded to meet ADA requirements and support the community Dark Sky initiative. The team completed the final report that was shared with the community, Parks and Recreation Board, and the Environmental Sustainability Board. The Parks and Recreation Board supported the project and sent it County Council for review. The Feasibility Study was introduced to the County Council on October 28 and approved on November 18, 2025.

Staff secured a grant from the NM Department of Finance and Administration to assess, review, design, and establish construction documents of the project. This project kicked off in the summer of 2024 and involved listening sessions and additional public input. In the summer of 2024, the engineering team from Wilson’s determined that the grandstand structure was not safe for use, and the County closed the area. Demolition of the grandstand and shade was completed in December 2024. Public engagement meetings have been ongoing with user groups, and Wilson’s is working towards finalizing the arena plan.

The purpose of this project is to design and develop an improved, accessible trailhead at Bayo Canyon. The project will include concept, schematics, design, construction documents and specifications along with construction administration. Planned amenities include expanded parking (including trailer parking), a vault toilet, kiosk, bicycle repair station, shade structure, and picnic table. ADA-compliant parking spaces will be included, along with thoughtful consideration for accessibility to all amenities.

The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate approximately 2,500 linear feet of the Los Alamos Mesa Trail to bring it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG). The scope of work includes revitalizing the trail surface and improving accessibility along the segment stretching from East Park to Nambe Place and the Airport.

The project involves the design and construction documents, per the Guaje Pines Master Plan, for the installation of columbarium structures. The work includes site preparation, structural construction, installation of two existing columbaria, and all related infrastructure necessary for a fully operational columbarium facility.

The design of ADA-compliant improvements and accessibility to the Demo Garden. The project will include concept, schematics, design, construction documents, and specifications , along with construction administration for the Demo garden. ADA accessibility will focus on an accessible route, access from the parking lot, public display areas such as the sensory garden, signage, bench seating, an outdoor program area, access to the work shed, and other accessible concerns noted by the Design professional. The intent is to improve accessibility while minimizing the impacts on the established garden beds. Community engagement sessions will be held in early 2026 to solicit feedback.

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.
Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.
Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.
WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.
Paddle Board Yoga: Take your fitness routine to the mat - a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddleboarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddleboarding newbies.

Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.
TBD
Practice time for boaters using canoes, kayaks and rafts. The doors open half an hour earlier for boat cleaning before entry. All watercraft must be rinsed off on the patio prior to pool entry. This program is composed of beginning and experienced dancers, and the main focus is to have fun, while learning and practicing to dance better. There is a variety of teachers from Los Alamos, some who have competed in competitive Ballroom and Latin Dance at the University level and who take care to offer lessons for a range of dance abilities. Waltz, Tango, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep have been some of the dances they have focused on, with the possibility of more on the horizon. Generally this group spends one or two months focusing on one particular dance. The evening includes a mix of lessons, dancing practice, good music and a generous helping of laughter.

Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.
The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

The goal of this program is to surround the youth within our community with the support to empower them to thrive in school and life. We provide connections to services for mental health, basic life needs, academic needs, social skills, special needs, and MORE! The Resource Specialist builds relationships with healthcare providers and others to provide assessments, identify challenges, resources needed, and assist with case coordination.
These are structured support groups for boys (Boys Council) and girls (Girls Circle), ages 10-18. Sessions are guided by an adult facilitator, to promote a supportive environment and provide a safe place to speak about issues. Topics focus on improving decision-making, selfesteem, resilience, substance abuse, violence, bullying, definitions of success, and family & relationship dynamics.
Sessions are typically held at the Los Alamos Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

This Los Alamos affiliate program mails FREE books every month to children residing in Los Alamos County, from birth to age 5. It promotes and supports literacy, the love of reading, early age learning, and encourages adult-child engagement.
This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.
Youth Peer Support provides guidance and support to teens from young adults with similar lived experiences. Services provided may include support and harm reduction practices for youth engaging in substance use or struggling with their mental health. Youth may also receive assistance navigating experiences with systems involvement such as probation, Teen Court, or traditional court proceedings, and other life challenges. Youth Peer Support specialists focus on helping youth maintain wellness during difficult times and work with them to identify and reach their goals.
Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.
Instead of a one-size-fits all approach, the Seven Challenges Program is individualized with careful attention to meeting youth where they are at with their substance use. This program helps young people look at themselves, understand what it takes to give up a drug abusing lifestyle, and prepare for success when they commit to change. Groups are twelve weeks long and are held 3-4 times per year.

The basis for the Farmers Market is that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. Supporting local growers, ranchers, and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where they are needed most. The Los Alamos Farmers Market started in 1970 as a great place to support local foods and buy direct from growers and producers.

Thursdays, May 2026 - October 2026
The Los Alamos Farmers' Market began in 1970, making it one of New Mexico's longest-running farmers' markets. Its aims are to bring fresh, local food to all residents, regardless of income, and to provide a community gathering place and pleasurable shopping experience. At the Los Alamos Farmers' Market, shoppers can find an array of fresh fruits and vegetables, farm-fresh cheeses, local honey, baked goods, handmade body products, and more. The market takes place at Ashley Pond Park on Thursday mornings from 7:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and runs from May 7 through October 29, 2026. Cash, most major credit cards, and EBT and Double-Up Food Bucks (DUFB) are accepted

This is a fun program to get families outside to explore our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works: As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it.
1. Pick up passport at the Nature Center
2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock.
3. Bring the Passport back to the Nature Center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).
4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any Passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs "Fat Man" & "Little Boy" on August 6 & 9, 1945 on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.
Imagine you’re a scientist living and working in 1943. One day, mysterious U.S. government men come to your home and convince you to move your family to a secret place to work on a secret project in service to your country. You travel to the remote mountains of New Mexico, into a high-security military base. Your family is given a crudely constructed house with a dirt floor. It isn’t until you report for work that you learn about the science question you’ll be working on. You cannot tell anyone about what you’re doing, not even your spouse. In fact, you don’t even fully know all that is happening.
Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos and talk with Rangers and volunteers, stamp your National Park Service Passport book, join free walking tours, and pick up a Junior Ranger book.

About 1.2 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 14-mile-wide circular depression now known as Valles Caldera. The park is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and embraces a rich cultural history. Nature abounds here, so be prepared for changing weather conditions. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you

The Community Services Department was sanctioned as an accredited agency by the Commission for Accreditation for Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) on October 9, 2024, at their annual conference. With this Accreditation, Los Alamos County joins the other 206 agencies nationwide and is the first and only County in New Mexico accredited for following industry best practice standards.
NRPA's CAPRA Accreditation delivers quality assurance and improvement to accredited park and recreation departments throughout the United States. This operational management system improves our infrastructure; increases efficiency in activities; and demonstrates accountability within our community. Implementation of this system also strengthens teamwork among department staff, embeds all aspects of CAPRA into our department’s internal culture, and establishes a continuous improvement mindset for all department activities. The accredited status demonstrates to our community that the department is a professional organization committed to the best practices in the industry and embodies a spirit of continuous improvement to enrich the quality of life in our community.
The Community Services Department has been working to meet the 154 standards of the accreditation requirements for the past three years. The 154 standards cover 10 categories of best practices for parks and recreation agencies. The week of May 13-17, 2024, the department hosted the peer review committee to review its evidence of compliance and tour Los Alamos County facilities. The committee found that the Community Services Department met 154 of 154 standards, which is uncommon.
The community can review the standards, link to documents referenced in the self-assessment, and report from CAPRA at: www.losalamosnm.us/Government/Departments-and-Divisions/Community-Services/CAPRA .

Los Alamos County Community Services Department received the Kudos Award from the New Mexico Recreation and Park Association (NMRPA) for the Los Alamos County Seasonal Activity Guide at its annual conference in 2024.
The Kudos Award is presented to agencies who have significantly contributed to the public’s increased awareness and recognition of public parks, recreation, conservation agencies, and leisure service programs.
The Activity Guide is compiled and published by the Los Alamos County Community Services Department on a quarterly basis to provide the community and its surrounding region with events happening in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. It also provides information about local amenities, attractions, and indoor and outdoor activities.
The distribution efforts continuously expand, and now include locations in Espanola and Taos, with a combined total of 44 locations within Northern New Mexico. Additionally, the Community Services Department monitors the number of Activity Guides printed and distributed, to help reduce waste, and adjusts the dispersion numbers for each location and season.
The Community Services Department strives to reach all audiences, and its local and regional populations, as it is home to one of the largest employers in Northern New Mexico. Regardless of whether an individual resides in Los Alamos or not, they spend a great amount of time in Los Alamos County and they are part of the community and should be included.
