A Letter from Community Services

It’s summer in Los Alamos...

Dear Community, Friends and Visitors,

Welcome to your ultimate guide to summer in Los Alamos County! As the days grow longer and the spirit of adventure stirs, we are excited to present a season filled with opportunities to explore, relax, and connect with family and friends in the great outdoors.

Our stunning landscapes offer the perfect backdrop for a variety of activities designed to suit all ages and interests. From serene hiking trails in the Bandelier National Monument, Valles Caldera, or our local canyons to the lively vibes of the Summer Concert Series, there is something here for everyone. Families can look forward to specially curated events that are both fun and engaging, including outdoor movie nights, farmers markets, and community picnics. Bring your family to ScienceFest or the Fair and Rodeo; maybe put them both on your schedule.

We believe that everyone in our community deserves to enjoy these offerings. I encourage you to check out our accessible trail at Kinnikinnik Park or the Canyon Rim Trail.

If intellectual stimulation is your path then visit the Library, Los Alamos Arts Council, PEEC, or one of our other community partners for your journey. If you or someone you know is facing one of life's challenges and needs assistance visit Los Alamos County Social Services Office, we have resources available to ensure that these opportunities are accessible.

Join us under the sun and stars this summer in Los Alamos, where adventure and community come together. We can't wait to see you out there!

Follow your passion and "Discover LA Today!" Sincerely,

Los Alamos County Community Services Department Receives CAPRA Accreditation

The Community Services Department was sanctioned as an accredited agency the Commission for Accreditation for Park and Recreation Agencies(CAPRA) through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) on October 9, 2024, at their annual conference. With this Accreditation, Los Alamos County joins the other 206 agencies nationwide and is the first and only County in New Mexico accredited for following industry best practice standards.

NRPA's CAPRA Accreditation delivers quality assurance and improvement to accredited park and recreation departments throughout the United States. This operational management system improves our infrastructure; increases efficiency in activities; and demonstrates accountability within our community. Implementation of this system also strengthens teamwork among department staff, embeds all aspects of CAPRA into our department’s internal culture, and establishes a continuous improvement mindset for all department activities. The accredited status demonstrates to our community that the department is a professional organization committed to the best practices in the industry and embodies a spirit of continuous improvement to enrich the quality of life in our community.

The Community Services Department has been working to meet the 154 standards of the accreditation requirements for the past three years. The 154 standards cover 10 categories of best practices for parks and recreation agencies. The week of May 13-17, 2024, the department hosted the peer review committee to review its evidence of compliance and tour Los Alamos County facilities. The committee found that the Community Services Department met 154 of 154 standards, which is uncommon.

The community can review the standards, link to documents referenced in the self-assessment, and report from CAPRA at: www.losalamosnm.us/Government/Departments-and-Divisions/Community-Services/CAPRA

Community Services Current Projects

Canyon Median Design

Staff is working with a contractor to redesign the Canyon Road medians to provide a better look, reduce water usage, and minimize pesticide use. The location is an extremely challenging due to the snow operations and heat of summer. Staff has made presentations to the Transportation Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for additional input.

Outdoor Classroom

Library staff has requested a place for outdoor learning. A task order has been issued to evaluate and design a concept for an outdoor classroom between the Mesa Public Library and the Betty Erhart Senior Center. Library staff has solicited and received feedback from the public on this project. Architectural changes to the design based on this feedback including cost estimates should arrive by June. Please contact Gwen Kalavaza, Library Manager at gwen.kalavaza@lacnm.us for more information.

Trail and Open Space Management Plan

As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation. The result is to have a single guiding document for the community as look to the future for managing our trails and open space so all users and abilities can enjoy our natural environment. Community listening sessions are being held. Sites Southwest is working on the final draft and recommendations in late spring 2025. Reach out to Eric Peterson, Open Space Specialist at eric.peterson@lacnm.us for more information.

Picnic Grounds at North Mesa Master Plan

This project is being led by Sites Southwest as we look at the park and picnic area. The desire is to upgrade the park using the American with Disabilities Act 2010. We plan to look at the paths, facilities, playgrounds, disk golf and roads. We are looking to renovate this park and see if we need to add, upgrade or improve the experience for the community.

Kinnikinnik Park Accessible Trail

Community and Staff celebrated the opening of this accessible trail in March of 2025. This is a prefect short walk or roll through the Ponderosa Pines just to the west of the Aquatic Center.

Staff secured a grant from the NM Outdoor Recreation Trails + to develop a 3/4-mile looped trail that is ADA accessible. The Trail will connect From PEEC to make a loop in Kinnikinnik Park. The trail will allow those with physical challenges to enjoy the beautiful scenic area. Additional accessible loops were part of the Integrated

Master Plan's observations in increasing use for all community members. Parks and Open Staff have led the construction of this project over winter ad will be putting in the finishing touches on the trail early 2025. Look for the updated trail to be operational by late 2025.

North Mesa Recreation Master Plan

Sites Southwest is the selected professional company for this planning exercise. Several Listening sessions and design workshops have been held. Look for concepts and draft designs this summer and into the fall. The area is from the Flint Soccer Field along North Mesa Drive to the east where the existing playground is located. This is the largest park area the county has to develop for future use. This project is important as the conversation moves forward about the North Mesa Housing Plan. The project provides a forum to discuss the future needs of North Mesa and to think about the long-term future uses of the space.

Field Renovations - Phase Two

Starting May 2025 the additional fields of Spiro Soccer, Senior Field and Bun Ryan Field will be renovated. These fields will be closed for the summer with an anticipated opening date of Oct 30, 2025. This project will also have additional fields for 2026 and 2027 under renovation. You can follow this project on the CSD website or contact Wendy Parker, Park Superintendent, (505) 662-8159 for more details.

Playground Renovation - 37th Street and Pinon (Rocket) Park Playground

The renovations for both playgrounds started in September of 2023 with public meetings at each playground. Feedback was additionally captured from 1st graders at Pinion Elementary School and 3rd graders at Mountain and Aspen Elementary. The children provide great feedback on the types of amenities they would like to see incorporated at these playgrounds. Two options have been on display and seeking additional feedback at the playgrounds and both libraries. Look for the final proposal to be at the Parks and recreation Advisory Board Meeting this summer. These two playgrounds are in the process now of renovations. LAC is seeking feedback from focus groups in the desires for the two playgrounds. Both of these were identified in the level of service and ADA Audit as needed to be renovated. A key focus is on the accessibility and inclusivity of these playgrounds. Staff is working with the vendor on the final draft plans for the playgrounds. Look for an opportunity to provide further feedback this fall. These parks and at 50% construction drawing and document stage. Staff expects the bids to be on the street in February. The team is hopeful for construction to begin in late Spring 2025.

Court Renovations - North Mesa Tennis and East Park Basketball

This project will begin a significant upgrade of athletic courts in the community. The North Mesa Courts will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. We will start with a new base that is more stable and allows for a better playing experience. We expect to change at least one court into a tennis court as part of this process. The East Court Basketball Court needs attention as well. We are hoping to have these projects moving forward by next spring. The courts will be updated to meet ADA requirements so that all users in our community feel welcomed and can enjoy the amenities. Bids were received in December 2024 and LA Landscape was selected for this project. As of March 2025, the contractor began the demolition process and construction of new courts will follow with an estimated completion dated early fall 2025. For information on this project, please contact Assistant Parks Superintendent, Emmanuel.abeyta@lacnm.us or (505) 662-8159.

Aquatic Facility Re-Plastering and Upgrades

The Los Alamos County Larry Walkup Aquatic Center was built in the late 1980’s and while other maintenance projects have taken place in recent years, the plaster shell of the Olympic Pool is the original. Plaster pool shells are designed to have a lifespan of 15 – 20 years; the Aquatic Center pool shell is well beyond its life expectancy and is showing its age.

Los Alamos County Recreation and Public Works team is working on drafting a contract with Lee-sure Pools that would include, but not limited to the following scope of work: remove old plaster, remove and replace rebar if exposed, replaster pool, remove and replace pool tile, address tow ledge, install anchor cups, remove and replace pool lights, remove and replace handrails in main pool and therapy pool, install depth markers and “no diving” tiles, remove and replace starting blocks.

The Contract with Lee-sure Pools is scheduled to be presented to the County Council in May 2025. This project is currently projected to start in March 2026 through October 2026. Alternative swim locations are being explored to be able to help reduce the impact to the local swimming community.

Ice Rink - Permanent Chiller

The existing chiller is reaching the limit of its expected life cycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and was presenting malfunctions. Because of its condition, the previous chiller could not be expected to make a skating ice sheet reliably.

Public Works is the lead on the chiller evaluation and replacement and is working with the Recreation Division. Initial evaluation has occurred with developing a scope of work for the project and rental of chiller unit for the 2023 – 2024 & 2024 - 2025 seasons. A permanent chiller is not an off-the-shelf product and requires to be custom-designed for the Los Alamos County Ice Rink, in addition to long lead times for the manufacturing process, is the result of a twoyear process to acquire a new chiller.

Additionally, there is concern for the concrete slab that supports the ice during the winter season, as it is also near its expected life cycle.

A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued on June 1, 2024; the team received one respondent. An agreement with R&M Construction was executed in August 2024, and the project kickoff meeting was held on August 15, 2024. Project completion is scheduled for November 2025.

Artificial Turf Study and ADA Recommendations

NV5 is leading this project. The feasibility study has held several feedback meetings and public surveys regarding the project. NV5 is compiling all of the responses and public input. Look for additional conversations on this project over the summer and into the fall. The study would look at specific fields, alignment, turf, lights, amenities, bleachers, fencing, netting, scoreboxes, and scoreboards. The fields would be upgraded to meet ADA requirements for fields and support the community Dark Sky initiative.

Brewer Arena Grandstand and ADA Improvements

Staff secured a grant from the NM Department of Finance and Administration to assess, review, design, and establish construction documents of the project. This project kicked off this summer and involves listening sessions and additional public input. In the summer of 2024 the engineering team from Wilson’s determined the grandstand structure was not safe for use and the County closed the area. Demolition of the grandstand and shade was completed in December 2024. Staff is working with the design team for final public feedback in early 2025. Staff is pushing for construction in the spring of 2025.

Benefits of Water Fitness

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.

Fitness Classes

Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.

Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.

WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.

Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest deep water for a great low impact but challenging workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardio-conditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended.

Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga (SUP): Take your fitness routine to the mat -- a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddleboarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddleboarding newbies.

Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

OPEN SPACE & TRAILS

Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.

The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

Looking for a Trailhead?

Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the County.

Find more information about the County Trail Network online: losalamosnm.us

Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.

Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times.

Jemez Mountain Trail

National Scenic Byway

Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, the Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs.

Explore unique sights, like Soda Dam and Jemez Falls, or take a short hike to Spence Hot Springs for a relaxing dip in the pools. Enjoy the unique red rock scenery, winding canyons, and breathtaking views, as you loop through the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) and enjoy fishing at Fenton Lake State Park, or a short side trip to the Gilman Tunnels—blasted through rock during the 1920s.

This 132-mile loop accommodates most vehicles and offers a convenient and rewarding way to experience the best of the Jemez Mountains—in just one day! Depart west from Los Alamos via NM501 and turn right onto NM4 toward Jemez Springs, traveling through Bandelier National Monument and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The road leads up more than 1,000 feet through the forest, cresting at an elevation of 9,000 feet.

Las Conchas Trail

East Fork Trail via Las Conchas Trail off NM4 is a 3.2 mile popular out-and-back trail that is primarily used for hiking and nature trips along the river. Climbing is also available along the trail. Dogs are able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

McCauley Warm Springs & Spence Hot Springs

McCauley Warm Springs is a 3.4 mile popular out-and-back trail, accessible year-round. Start at Battleship Rock and hike two miles uphill to the springs, or start at the Jemez Falls trailhead to hike downhill first. Dogs are also able to use this trail. Want to enjoy the springs without the hike? Visit Spence Hot Springs, located a short 1/4 mile hike off NM4, just a few miles north of Soda Dam.

Santa Fe National Forest West Canyon Trailheads

Some of our favorite trails connect to the surrounding national forest on the western and northern perimeters of Los Alamos. Discover these trails and find bubbling brooks, unique rock formations, wildlife, and in summer, an abundance of wildflowers!

Purchase trail maps and get hiking advice at the Los Alamos Nature Center. For more detailed information about the many places to seek adventure.

Soda Dam

Explore this fascinating roadside attraction with pools, caves and rocks to climb on. Splash in the river to cool off, and enjoy the beautiful and unique scenery surrounding you. Dogs are also welcome at Soda Dam, but must be kept on leash.

PAJARITO MOUNTAIN

A gem exists in northern New Mexico, where the sun shines 300 days a year and you can often ski without a jacket. Pajarito Mountain has a base elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level, and a top elevation of 10,400 feet. The lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos.

Pajarito Mountain has 44 trails, 280 ski-able acres (not including the tree skiing), and 1,200 feet of vertical drop — plenty to keep skiers and boarders busy. It boasts six chairlifts including three doubles, one triple, one quad, and one conveyor. Pajarito’s terrain includes miles of groomed trails, bump runs and glade skiing. With its Rio Grande valley views, well-known tree skiing and bump runs, fabulous terrain park, lack of lift lines and fabulous weather, Pajarito may be New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secret!

Visit any Thursday or Friday during the season for a free Never Ever Lesson with the purchase of a lift ticket and rentals and $10 in Bird Bucks and Resort Credit!

Pajarito Mountain Biking

Pajarito Mountain Bike Park is a gnarly, old-school, lift-served downhill experience. With more 1,440 vertical feet of elevation change, Pajarito's trails will have your heart pumping. Please visit pajarito.ski/first-time-mountain-biking/

BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT

Imagine your home carved from volcanic tuff and your crops planted in mesa top fields. Corn, beans, and squash were central to your diet, supplemented by native plants and meat from deer, rabbit, squirrel and domesticated turkeys. Your dogs assisted in hunting and provided companionship. Step onto the trails and ladders and into the past as you experience life as an Ancestral Pueblo person.

Bandelier National Monument protects more than 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back more than 11,000 years. Petroglyph, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.

MANHATTAN PROJECT NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK

Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs "Fat Man" & "Little Boy" on August 6 & 9, 1945 on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II –forever changing the world.

Imagine you’re a scientist living and working in 1943. One day, mysterious U.S. government men come to your home and convince you to move your family to a secret place to work on a secret project in service to your country. You travel to the remote mountains of New Mexico, into a high-security military base. Your family is given a crudely constructed house with a dirt floor. It isn’t until you report for work that you learn about the science question you’ll be working on. You cannot tell anyone about what you’re doing, not even your spouse. In fact, you don’t even fully know all that is happening.

Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos and talk with Rangers and volunteers, stamp your National Park Service Passport book, join free walking tours, and pick up a Junior Ranger book.

VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE

Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. Discover extraordinary views and sulfur springs as you find yourself in the midst of an active geothermal system. Find evidence of Ancestral Native peoples in obsidian used for tools and weapons and shepherd’s signatures carved on trees. Reflect on a landscape where hunting and gathering were practiced successfully for more than 10,000 years. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.

LOS ALAMOS FARMERS' MARKET

The basis for the Farmers' Market is that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. Supporting local growers, ranchers and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where it is needed most. The Los Alamos Farmers' Market started in 1970 as a great place to support local foods and buy direct from growers and producers.

Passport to the Pajarito Plateau

Ongoing

This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works: As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it.

1. Pick up passport at the Nature Center

2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock.

3. Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).

4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Seasonal Activity Guide Award

Los Alamos County Community Services Department received the Kudos Award from the New Mexico Recreation and Park Association (NMRPA) for the Los Alamos County Seasonal Activity Guide at its annual conference in 2024.

The Kudos Award is presented to agencies who have significantly contributed to the public’s increased awareness and recognition of public parks, recreation, conservation agencies, and leisure service programs.

The Activity Guide is compiled and published by the Los Alamos County Community Services Department on a quarterly basis to provide the community and its surrounding region with events happening in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. It also provides information about local amenities, attractions, and indoor and outdoor activities.

The distribution efforts continuously expand, and now include locations in Espanola and Taos, with a combined total of 44 locations within Northern New Mexico. Additionally, the Community Services Department monitors the number of Activity Guides printed and distributed, to help reduce waste, and adjusts the dispersion numbers for each location and season.

The Community Services Department strives to reach all audiences, and its local and regional populations, as it is home to one of the largest employers in Northern New Mexico. Regardless of whether an individual resides in Los Alamos or not, they spend a great amount of time in Los Alamos County and they are part of the community and should be included.
