It’s fall in Los Alamos...
Dear Community, Visitors, and Friends-
Fall is a fantastic time to be in Los Alamos! The weather is cooling off and the colors are changing in the mountains. This is a great time to think about new activities and make sure your schedule your favorites.
LAC and our community partners are proud to provide a robust set of programs, activities, and social events for everyone in our community. The Activity Guide is full of ways to get connected in our community and meet someone new or hang out with your current social circles.
The Community Services Department (CSD) updates the project pages in the Activity Guide in each edition so you can keep up with progress of the projects that may impact your life or just peek your interest. As this edition goes to print staff is finishing up the Athletic Field Renovation Phase 1, White Rock Skate Park, and the Golf Course Improvements. Others are in progress and just starting so please review these pages and keep up to date on the County Projects webpage. We are using the Integrated Master Plan and the Americans With Disabilities Audit and Transition Plan to prioritize needs and renovate and update our existing amenities.
Our Social Services team is also available to assist those in our community that may be facing life’s challenges. These challenges may include mental health, economic hardship or other life challenges the seem insurmountable today. We encourage anyone to connect with Social Services to explore the resources they have in order to assist you.
In this guide, you’ll find many fall activities and I am sure you will find something to enjoy as you “Discover LA Today”.
Best wishes and follow your passions

Staff is working with a contractor to redesign the Canyon Road medians to provide a better look, reduce water usage, and minimize pesticide use. The location is an extremely challenging due to the snow operations and heat of summer. Staff has made presentations to the Transportation Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for additional input. Construction plans are being finalized and will begin fall 2024 or spring 2025.
Library staff has requested a place for outdoor learning. A task order has been issued to evaluate and design a concept for an outdoor classroom between the Mesa Public Library and the Betty Erhart Senior Center. Library staff has started the public input process phase. Look for more opportunities to share your thoughts and opinions with library staff. Please contact Gwen Kalavaza, Library Manager at gwen.kalavaza@lacnm.us for more information or to share your thoughts.
As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation. The result is to have a single guiding document for the community as look to the future for managing our trails and open space so all users and abilities can enjoy our natural environment. Community listening sessions are being held. Reach out to Eric Peterson, Open Space Specialist at eric.peterson@lacnm. us for more information on sessions. Our professionals from Sites Southwest will be facilitating the meetings.
Staff is working with a contractor to collect public feedback and replace the elements at the White Rock Skate Park with new elements. Public input started with an open survey that was wrapped up with a community feedback meeting and final presentation to the Parks and Recreation Board. Construction will begin the week of July 29 (park closure to remove existing modules) and the week of August 12, 2024, ARC will begin the construction process to place the new modules.
The athletic field maintenance was a topic during the development of the 2023 Integrated Master Plan, as such funding was allocated in FY24 budget to begin renovation on the athletic fields. This project began May 28, 2024 and will conclude by September 30, 2024. LA Landscape and More, LLC is the project contractor. The project will consist of leveling the playing surfaces, new turf, laser grade and revitalize the infield and adjust the irrigation heads. Phase two of the field renovation project is being evaluated for 2025.
Staff secured a grant from the NM Outdoor Recreation Trails + to develop a 3/4 mile looped trail that is ADA accessible. The Trail will connect From PEEC to make a loop in Kinnikinnik Park. The trail will allow for those with physical challenges to enjoy the beautiful scenic area. Additional accessible loops were part of the Integrated Master Plan's observations in increasing use for all community members. Bids have been solicited twice for this project with no qualified responses. This project will be offered through an IFB Solicitation Process this summer with an anticipated completion date of December 2024.
The renovations for both playgrounds started in September of 2023 with public meetings at each playground. Feedback was additionally captured from 1st graders at Pinion Elementary School and 3rd graders at Mountain and Aspen Elementary. The children provide great feedback on the types of amenities they would like to see incorporated at these playgrounds. Two options have been on display and seeking additional feedback at the playgrounds and both libraries. Look for the final proposal to be at the Parks and recreation Advisory Board Meeting this summer. These two playgrounds are in the process now of renovations. LAC is seeking feedback from focus groups in the desires for the two playgrounds. Both of these were identified in the level of service and ADA Audit as needed to be renovated. A key focus is on the accessibility and inclusivity of these playgrounds. Staff is working with the vendor on the final draft plans for the playgrounds. Look for an opportunity to provide further feedback this fall.
Two pavilion structures will be placed at Ashley Pond on the Trinity Road parking lot in the existing footprint of the current slabs located by the handicap parking area. The pads will be ADA accessible and offer a covered area for park users to enjoy. The construction documents are prepared and the structures will be delivered in August. The structures will be installed late fall 2024.
This project will begin a significant upgrade of athletic courts in the community. The North Mesa Courts will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. We will start with a new base that is more stable and allow for a better playing experience. We expect to change at least one court into a tennis court as part of this process. The East Court Basketball Court needs attention as well. We are hoping to have these projects moving forward by next spring. The courts will be updated to meet ADA requirements so that all users in our community feel welcomed and can enjoy the amenities. Staff has discussed with the tennis and pickle-ball community on the renovations. Our contractor is in the process of the design and construction documents phase. Staff is looking forward to late summer or early fall construction on the courts.
Los Alamos County selected Action Sports for design and construction services for a Bicycle Moto-Cross (BMX) Track which will require sanctioning by USA BMX. The track will be built on County owned property, located at North Mesa Park Road, in the existing footprint approved by County Council. Action Sports will seek stakeholder and user group input for the options on the BMX track. The first listening session was held on June 20 with additional input meetings coming late summer 2024.
Los Alamos County received two bids for the re-issued Request for Proposal (RFP). The project includes the improvement of features on holes 4 –18, including tees, bunkers, greens, permanent restrooms, targeted cart path upgrades, and deferred maintenance. The project also includes improving holes 1– 3, reconfiguring the driving range to improve safety, and other practice area updates. Contracts are signed and in place with Mid-America, performing the Course renovations, and Judge Netting, performing the practice range netting project. The construction kick-off meeting took place on Nov. 29, 2023. Construction with Mid-America began on Jan. 16, 2024. Judge Netting, for the new practice range net, as part of the Golf improvement project began their phase of the project on April 15, 2024. The new range net has since been installed, and Mid-America continues their work on the practice range, and will be moving to the back 9 soon.
The existing chiller is reaching the limit of its expected life-cycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and is already presenting malfunctions. In its current condition, the existing chiller cannot be expected to make a skating ice sheet in a reliable manner.
Public Works is the lead on the chiller evaluation and replacement and is working with the Recreation Division. Initial evaluation has occurred with developing a scope of work for the project and rental of chiller unit for the 2023 – 2024 & 2024 - 2025 seasons. A permanent chiller is not an off-the-shelf product and requires to be custom-designed for the Los Alamos County Ice Rink, in addition to long lead times for the manufacturing process, is the result of a twoyear process to acquire a new chiller. Additionally, there is concern for the concert slab that supports the ice during the winter season, as it is also nearly its expected life-cycle.
A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued June 1, 2024 the team received one respondent. An agreement is being draft and scheduled to go before County Council at the end of July 2024.
CSD has been working for the past two years on updating process, plans and programs to meet the best practice standards of Parks and Recreation Agencies. The national standards feature 164 standards that are agency reviewed through the self-assessment and then reviewed by a peer group of trained professionals. Currently there are 192 accredited agencies across the United States and only 1 in New Mexico. The program assures that the CSD is operating with the best practices for forward looking agencies and how they serve the community. Our peer review occurred in May and we will be waiting for the results of the site visit which will occur in October. The Peer Review held on May 15 and 16 was very complimentary of our community and the Departments efforts to meet all of the standards. The Peer Review Team debrief gave the department high marks. Staff is preparing for the hearing in October that will hopefully recognize CSD as an accredited agency.
Staff secured a grant from the NM Department of Finance and Administration to assess, review, design and establish construction documents of the project. This project will kick off this summer and involve listening sessions and additional public input. Our goal is to have a couple of conceptual plans for community input at the Fair and Rodeo on August 3 and 4. The engineering team is in the process of the structural review. We expect public input sessions coming this fall
Staff has is preparing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to look into the possibility of implementing artificial turf fields in the community. The study would look at specific fields, alignment, turf, lights, amenities, bleachers, fencing, netting, scoreboxes, and scoreboards. The fields would be upgraded to meet ADA requirements for fields and support the communities Dark Sky initiative. Look for community conversations later this summer or early fall. This project has been issued as a Request for Proposals (RFP). Staff anticipates this project to kick off in late fall or early winter.
Staff are preparing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to look at the North Mesa Park area. The area is from the soccer field along North Mesa Drive and east to the playground. This is the largest park area for the county to develop. This project is important as the conversation moves forward on the North Mesa Housing Plan. The project provides a forum to discuss the future needs of North Mesa and think long term about the future uses of the space. The community conversations regarding this project will occur this fall into winter.
Just look around and you’ll find History, Science and Cultural Assets! A wide variety of events and programming this spring are abundant in Los Alamos. Visit our local attractions to discover more about the area, learn something new, meet local experts, and experience something special.

The basis for the Farmers Market is that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. Supporting local growers, ranchers, and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where it is needed most. The Los Alamos Farmers Market started in 1970 as a great place to support local foods and buy direct from growers and producers.
Thursdays, May - October
Wednesdays, September - October
Purchase locally grown/raised foods, direct from the farmers. Picked or made fresh, you can find fruit, vegetables, baked goods, body products, honey, butter, ungraded eggs, apple cider, jams and jellies, organic seeds, locally raised meat, herbs and vegetable starts, and plants for the indoors and outdoors. This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works:
1. As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it
2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock
3. Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).
4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6-million-acre Santa Fe National Forest. Here, you can find the headwaters of Pecos, Jemez, and Gallinas Rivers; mountain streams; lakes; and trout fishing. Travel into the Dome Wilderness via pack trips, saddle, or on 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Consider turkey, elk, deer, and bear hunting, or visit one of many nearby Indian pueblos, Spanish missions, and Indian ruins.
Book your reservation online!
The Santa Fe National Forest offers beautiful camping and recreation areas that include high desert and forested landscapes on a range of elevations with primitive and developed campsites. Developed campgrounds offer a selection of amenities for users with RVs and tents. Many campgrounds are available by reservation:
• Jemez Falls Campground
• Paliza Family Campground
• Redondo Campground
• San Antonio Campground
• Vista Linda Campground
• Fenton Lake State Park Please visit recreation.gov for reservations.
Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, the Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs.
Explore unique sights, like Soda Dam and Jemez Falls, or take a short hike to Spence Hot Springs for a relaxing dip in the pools. Enjoy the unique red rock scenery, winding canyons, and breathtaking views, as you loop through the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) and enjoy fishing at Fenton Lake State Park, or a short side trip to the Gilman Tunnels—blasted through rock during the 1920s.
This 132-mile loop accommodates most vehicles and offers a convenient and rewarding way to experience the best of the Jemez Mountains—in just one day! Depart west from Los Alamos via NM501 and turn right onto NM4 toward Jemez Springs, traveling through Bandelier National Monument and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The road leads up more than 1,000 feet through the forest, cresting at an elevation of 9,000 feet.
East Fork Trail via Las Conchas Trail off NM4 is a 3.2 mile popular out-and-back trail that is primarily used for hiking and nature trips along the river. Climbing is also available along the trail. Dogs are able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
McCauley Warm Springs is a 3.4 mile popular out-and-back trail, accessible year-round. Start at Battleship Rock and hike two miles uphill to the springs, or start at the Jemez Falls trailhead to hike downhill first. Dogs are also able to use this trail. Want to enjoy the springs without the hike? Visit Spence Hot Springs, located a short 1/4 mile hike off NM4, just a few miles north of Soda Dam.
Some of our favorite trails connect to the surrounding national forest on the western and northern perimeters of Los Alamos. Discover these trails and find bubbling brooks, unique rock formations, wildlife, and in summer, an abundance of wildflowers!
Purchase trail maps and get hiking advice at the Los Alamos Nature Center. For more detailed information about the many places to seek adventure.
Explore this fascinating roadside attraction with pools, caves and rocks to climb on. Splash in the river to cool off, and enjoy the beautiful and unique scenery surrounding you. Dogs are also welcome at Soda Dam, but must be kept on leash.
Pajarito Mountain has beautiful fall foliage and gorgeous views right near town. Guests can also ride the lift up and hike down the trails (sorry, no down-lifts), and the hill is normally open into October.
Pajarito Cafe, located in the lodge, offers delicious burgers and New Mexican food with some of the best views in the area from the beautiful lodge deck.

Your dogs assisted in hunting and provided companionship. Step onto the trails and ladders and into the past as you experience life as an Ancestral Pueblo person.
Bandelier National Monument protects more than 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back more than 11,000 years. Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs "Fat Man" & "Little Boy" on August 6 & 9, 1945 on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.
Imagine you’re a scientist living and working in 1943. One day, mysterious U.S. government men come to your home and convince you to move your family to a secret place to work on a secret project in service to your country. You travel to the remote mountains of New Mexico, into a high-security military base. Your family is given a crudely constructed house with a dirt floor. It isn’t until you report for work that you learn about the science question you’ll be working on. You cannot tell anyone about what you’re doing, not even your spouse. In fact, you don’t even fully know all that is happening. Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos and talk with Rangers and volunteers, stamp your National Park Service Passport book, join free walking tours, and pick up a Junior Ranger book.
Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. Discover extraordinary views and sulfur springs as you find yourself in the midst of an active geothermal system. Find evidence of Ancestral Native peoples in obsidian used for tools and weapons and shepherd’s signatures carved on trees. Reflect on a landscape where hunting and gathering were practiced successfully for more than 10,000 years. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.
Entrance Fee
Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.
Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail.
During Regular Park Hours, Check in at the Entrance Station

Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.
The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.
Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the County.
Find more information about the County Trail Network on-line: losalamosnm.us - Click on “Recreation”
Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only. Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails.
Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Pueblo room blocks, pot shards, petroglyphs, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Let all cultural resources lie undisturbed.
Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.
Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times.
Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid.
Trailhead guides are available at major trailheads, the Los Alamos County Customer Care Center in the Municipal Building, the Los Alamos Nature Center, and on-line.

This program is composed of beginning and experienced dancers, and the main focus is to have fun, while learning and practicing to dance better. There is a variety of teachers from Los Alamos, some who have competed in competitive Ballroom and Latin Dance at the University level and who take care to offer lessons for a range of dance abilities. Waltz, Tango, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep have been some of the dances they have focused on, with the possibility of more on the horizon. Generally this group spends one or two months focusing on one particular dance. The evening includes a mix of lessons, dancing practice, good music and a generous helping of laughter.

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.
Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.
Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.
WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.
Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest deep water for a great low impact but challenging workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardio-conditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended.
Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga (SUP): Take your fitness routine to the mat -- a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddleboarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddleboarding newbies.
Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

The Pajarito Plateau is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including BLACK BEARS, RACCOONS, BOBCATS, SKUNKS, ELK, FOXES, MOUNTAIN LIONS, RATTLESNAKES, COYOTES, and more.
Alamos County we often live or play in habitats used by these wild animals. With a better understanding of these animals, we can coexist safely.
Most rattlesnakes live in arid habitats and are nocturnal, hiding during the heat of the day in burrows or under rocks, and emerging in the evening to hunt for prey, which consists primarily of small mammals, especially rodents. Rattlesnakes use their tails to make a rattling noise. This noise is intended to make predators aware of its presence.
If you encounter a rattlesnake, follow these TIPS:
• Remain calm and do not panic.
• Stay at least 5 feet away.
• Do not try to kill the snake. This increases the chance the snake will bite you.
• Do not throw anything at the snake, like rocks or sticks. The snake may respond by moving toward you.
• Alert other people to the snake’s location. Keep children and pets away.
• Keep your dog on a leash when hiking or camping.
• If you hear a rattle, don’t jump or panic. Locate where the sound is coming from, so you don’t step closer.
• If bitten by a rattlesnake, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Stay vigilant by following best practices, and paying close attention to children, pets, and livestock. Ensure enclosures prevent entry from above and below.
NEVER feed wild animals! Do not put out food for any animals. Feed pets indoors. Clean up fruit dropped from trees and bird seed below feeders. Secure garbage in animal-proof containers and store it in a garage or shed. Secure access to the home.
Be S.M.A.R.T.
Stop! Do not run. Make yourself look big. Announce forcefully, “Leave Me Alone!” Retreat. Back away slowly, but don’t turn your back. Teach others these tips.

This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.
Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.
