This season also brings a wealth of cultural activities to enrich your personal growth. Take a class at the Art Center, attend a guest speaker event, or look ahead to the upcoming Summer Concerts that are sure to be a highlight of the season. This includes updates on various initiatives led by Community Services, such as the Canyon Median Design, which aims to improve aesthetics, reduce water usage, and minimize pesticides. Construction is set to begin in 2025. The Ice Rink is receiving a new permanent chiller, as the old one had reached the end of its life cycle. Work is underway, with a new chiller expected by November 2025. Stay updated on these and other community projects through the Activity Guide. Get out, explore, and make the most of what our community has to offer.
Follow your interests and enjoy the new season.

The Pajarito Plateau is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including BLACK BEARS, RACCOONS, BOBCATS, ELK, FOXES, DEER, MOUNTAIN LIONS, RATTLESNAKES, COYOTES, and more.
Alamos County we often live or play in habitats used by these wild animals. With a better understanding of these animals, we can coexist safely.
• Be a smart wildlife watcher and help keep wildlife wild. Do not put out food for any animals. Let them stick to their natural diet. Feeding wildlife isn’t safe for the animals or for you.
• Store your food and stash your trash. You may unintentionally feed wildlife by leaving trash or crumbs behind. Be sure to clean up after yourself after meals and practice Leave No Trace principles.
• Give the animals room. Always keep a safe distance when watching wildlife.
Stay vigilant by following best practices, and paying close attention to children, pets, and livestock.
Stop! Do not run. Make yourself look big. Announce forcefully, “Leave Me Alone!” Retreat. Back away slowly, but don’t turn your back. Teach others these tips.
Come spring, the black bears are waking up from their long winter nap. Follow these tips and tricks to minimize encounters as bears begin to look for food:
• Don’t leave pet food or food dishes outdoors overnight.
• Never leave fruit from trees and bushes to rot on the ground.
• Bring in bird feeders at night. These are a high-calorie treat bears will seek out.
• Never put meat or sweet-smelling food scraps in your compost pile.
• Clean and store outdoor grills after use. Bears can smell a dirty grill for miles.
• Store garbage properly at all times. Only put roll carts out the morning of your trash pick up, and use bear-proof containers when available.

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training, and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.
Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.
Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching, and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma, and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.
WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone, and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees, and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands, and boards. Water shoes recommended.
Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest-deep water for a great low-impact but challenging workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardioconditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended.
Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga (SUP): Take your fitness routine to the mat - a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddle boarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddle boarding newbies.
Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

Los Alamos County offers a Course that's both Fun & Challenging.
Nestled at the base of the Jemez Mountains, atop the Pajarito Plateau, the Los Alamos County Golf Course offers a challenging 6,500 yard, par 72, 18-hole layout that gets turned into a cross-country ski playground when the snow arrives. The golf course, built in 1947 by the Atomic Energy Commission, is one of the oldest 18-hole golf courses in New Mexico, and underwent a renovation in 2024. Panoramic vistas and clear, fresh mountain air at an elevation of 7,400 feet, provide a beautiful setting to enjoy the winter wonderland and have great experiences.

Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.
The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.
Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the County.
Find more information about the County Trail Network online: losalamosnm.us

Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.

The goal of this program is to surround the youth within our community with the support to empower them to thrive in school and life. We provide connections to services for mental health, basic life needs, academic needs, social skills, special needs, and MORE! The Resource Specialist builds relationships with healthcare providers and others to provide assessments, identify challenges, resources needed, and assist with case coordination.
These are structured support groups for boys (Boys Council) and girls (Girls Circle), ages 10-18. Sessions are guided by an adult facilitator, to promote a supportive environment and provide a safe place to speak about issues. Topics focus on improving decision-making, selfesteem, resilience, substance abuse, violence, bullying, definitions of success, and family & relationship dynamics.
Sessions are typically held at the Los Alamos Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.
This Los Alamos affiliate program mails FREE books every month to children residing in Los Alamos County, from birth to age 5. It promotes and supports literacy, the love of reading, early age learning, and encourages adult-child engagement.
This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.
Youth Peer Support provides guidance and support to teens from young adults with similar lived experiences. Services provided may include support and harm reduction practices for youth engaging in substance use or struggling with their mental health. Youth may also receive assistance navigating experiences with systems involvement such as probation, Teen Court, or traditional court proceedings, and other life challenges. Youth Peer Support specialists focus on helping youth maintain wellness during difficult times and work with them to identify and reach their goals.
Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.
Instead of a one-size-fits all approach, the Seven Challenges Program is individualized with careful attention to meeting youth where they are at with their substance use. This program helps young people look at themselves, understand what it takes to give up a drug abusing lifestyle, and prepare for success when they commit to change. Groups are twelve weeks long and are held 3-4 times per year.

Staff is working with a contractor to redesign the Canyon Road medians to provide a better look, reduce water usage, and minimize pesticide use. The location is an extremely challenging due to the snow operations and heat of summer. Staff has made presentations to the Transportation Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for additional input. Construction will begin in 2025!
Library staff has requested a place for outdoor learning. A task order has been issued to evaluate and design a concept for an outdoor classroom between the Mesa Public Library and the Betty Erhart Senior Center. Library staff has started the public input process phase. Look for more opportunities to share your thoughts and opinions with library staff. Concepts are expected to be presented in early 2025 for public input. Please contact Gwen Kalavaza, Library Manager at gwen.kalavaza@lacnm.us for more information or to share your thoughts.
As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation. The result is to have a single guiding document for the community as look to the future for managing our trails and open space so all users and abilities can enjoy our natural environment. Community listening sessions are being held. The vendor is working on the final draft and recommendations look for those in early 2025 to comment on. Reach out to Eric Peterson, Open Space Specialist at eric.peterson@lacnm.us for more information on sessions. Our professionals from Sites Southwest will be facilitating the meetings.
Staff secured a grant from the NM Outdoor Recreation Trails + to develop a 3/4-mile looped trail that is ADA accessible. The Trail will connect From PEEC to make a loop in Kinnikinnik Park. The trail will allow those with physical challenges to enjoy the beautiful scenic area. Additional accessible loops were part of the Integrated Master Plan's observations in increasing use for all community members. Parks and Open Staff have led the construction of this project over winter ad will be putting in the finishing touches on the trail early 2025. Look for the updated trail to be operational by late 2025.
The renovations for both playgrounds started in September of 2023 with public meetings at each playground. Feedback was additionally captured from 1st graders at Pinion Elementary School and 3rd graders at Mountain and Aspen Elementary. The children provide great feedback on the types of amenities they would like to see incorporated at these playgrounds. Two options have been on display and seeking additional feedback at the playgrounds and both libraries. Look for the final proposal to be at the Parks and recreation Advisory Board Meeting this summer. These two playgrounds are in the process now of renovations. LAC is seeking feedback from focus groups in the desires for the two playgrounds. Both of these were identified in the level of service and ADA Audit as needed to be renovated. A key focus is on the accessibility and inclusivity of these playgrounds. Staff is working with the vendor on the final draft plans for the playgrounds. Look for an opportunity to provide further feedback this fall. These parks and at 50% construction drawing and document stage. Staff expects the bids to be on the street in February. The team is hopeful for construction to begin in late Spring 2025.
Starting May 2025 the additional fields of Spiro Soccer, Senior Field and Bun Ryan Field will be renovated. These fields will be closed for the summer with an anticipated opening date of Oct 30, 2025. This project will also have additional fields for 2026 and 2027 under renovation. You can follow this project on the CSD website or contact Wendy Parker, Park Superintendent, 505-662-8159 for more details.
This project will begin a significant upgrade of athletic courts in the community. The North Mesa Courts will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. We will start with a new base that is more stable and allows for a better playing experience. We expect to change at least one court into a tennis court as part of this process. The East Court Basketball Court needs attention as well. We are hoping to have these projects moving forward by next spring. The courts will be updated to meet ADA requirements so that all users in our community feel welcomed and can enjoy the amenities. The staff has discussed with the tennis and pickle-ball community on the renovations. Our contractor is in the process of the design and construction documents phase. Bids were received in December 2024 and staff is evaluating the response and experts construction to start in Spring 2025.
Los Alamos County selected Action Sports for design and construction services for a Bicycle Moto-Cross (BMX) Track which will require sanctioning by USA BMX. The track will be built on County owned property, located at North Mesa Park Road, in the existing footprint approved by County Council. Action Sports will seek stakeholder and user group input for the options on the BMX track. The first listening session was held on June 20 with additional input meetings coming late summer 2024. Next steps are being discussed.
The existing chiller is reaching the limit of its expected life cycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and was presenting malfunctions. Because of its condition, the previous chiller could not be expected to make a skating ice sheet reliably.
Public Works is the lead on the chiller evaluation and replacement and is working with the Recreation Division. Initial evaluation has occurred with developing a scope of work for the project and rental of chiller unit for the 2023 – 2024 & 2024 - 2025 seasons. A permanent chiller is not an off-the-shelf product and requires to be custom-designed for the Los Alamos County Ice Rink, in addition to long lead times for the manufacturing process, is the result of a twoyear process to acquire a new chiller. Additionally, there is concern for the concrete slab that supports the ice during the winter season, as it is also near its expected life cycle. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued on June 1, 2024; the team received one respondent. An agreement with R&M Construction was executed in August 2024, and the project kickoff meeting was held on August 15, 2024. Project completion is scheduled for November 2025.
Staff secured a grant from the NM Department of Finance and Administration to assess, review, design, and establish construction documents of the project. This project kicked off this summer and involves listening sessions and additional public input. The engineering team from Wilson’s determined the grandstand structure was not safe for use and the County closed the area. Demolition of the grandstand and share were completed in December 2024. Staff is working with the design team for final public feedback in early 2025. Staff is pushing for construction in spring of 2025.
Staff is preparing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to look into implementing artificial turf fields in the community. The study would look at specific fields, alignment, turf, lights, amenities, bleachers, fencing, netting, scoreboxes, and scoreboards. The fields would be upgraded to meet ADA requirements for fields and support the community Dark Sky initiative. This project has been issued as a Request for Proposals (RFP). Staff kicked off the public meeting in October, with additional community feedback in early 2025.
Staff are preparing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to look at the North Mesa Park area. The area is from the soccer field along North Mesa Drive and east to the playground. This is the largest park area for the county to develop. This project is important as the conversation moves forward on the North Mesa Housing Plan. The project provides a forum to discuss the future needs of North Mesa and think long term about the future uses of the space. The community conversations regarding this project were delayed until early 2025. The community will have several opportunities to provide feedback on amenities and concepts throughout the spring.
Just Look around and you’ll find History, Science and Cultural Assets!

The basis for the Farmers Market is that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. Supporting local growers, ranchers, and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where they are needed most. The Los Alamos Farmers Market started in 1970 as a great place to support local foods and buy direct from growers and producers.
Thursdays, March 2025 - April 2025
Thursdays, May 2025 - October 2025

This is a fun program to get families outside to explore our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works: As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it.
1. Pick up passport at the Nature Center
2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock.
3. Bring the Passport back to the Nature Center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).
4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any Passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, the Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs.
Explore unique sights, like Soda Dam and Jemez Falls, or take a short hike to Spence Hot Springs for a relaxing dip in the pools. Enjoy the unique red rock scenery, winding canyons, and breathtaking views, as you loop through the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) and enjoy fishing at Fenton Lake State Park, or a short side trip to the Gilman Tunnels—blasted through rock during the 1920s.
This 132-mile loop accommodates most vehicles and offers a convenient and rewarding way to experience the best of the Jemez Mountains—in just one day! Depart west from Los Alamos via NM501 and turn right onto NM4 toward Jemez Springs, traveling through Bandelier National Monument and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The road leads up more than 1,000 feet through the forest, cresting at an elevation of 9,000 feet.
East Fork Trail via Las Conchas Trail off NM4 is a 3.2 mile popular out-and-back trail that is primarily used for hiking and nature trips along the river. Climbing is also available along the trail. Dogs are able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
McCauley Warm Springs is a 3.4 mile popular out-and-back trail, accessible year-round. Start at Battleship Rock and hike two miles uphill to the springs, or start at the Jemez Falls trailhead to hike downhill first. Dogs are also able to use this trail. Want to enjoy the springs without the hike? Visit Spence Hot Springs, located a short 1/4 mile hike off NM4, just a few miles north of Soda Dam.
Some of our favorite trails connect to the surrounding national forest on the western and northern perimeters of Los Alamos. Discover these trails and find bubbling brooks, unique rock formations, wildlife, and in summer, an abundance of wildflowers!
Purchase trail maps and get hiking advice at the Los Alamos Nature Center. For more detailed information about the many places to seek adventure.
Explore this fascinating roadside attraction with pools, caves and rocks to climb on. Splash in the river to cool off, and enjoy the beautiful and unique scenery surrounding you. Dogs are also welcome at Soda Dam, but must be kept on leash.
A gem exists in northern New Mexico, where the sun shines 300 days a year and you can often ski without a jacket. Pajarito Mountain has a base elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level, and a top elevation of 10,400 feet. The lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos.
Pajarito Mountain has 44 trails, 280 ski-able acres (not including the tree skiing), and 1,200 feet of vertical drop — plenty to keep skiers and boarders busy. It boasts six chairlifts including three doubles, one triple, one quad, and one conveyor. Pajarito’s terrain includes miles of groomed trails, bump runs and glade skiing. With its Rio Grande valley views, well-known tree skiing and bump runs, fabulous terrain park, lack of lift lines and fabulous weather, Pajarito may be New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secret!

Corn, beans, and squash were central to your diet, supplemented by native plants and meat from deer, rabbit, squirrel and domesticated turkeys. Your dogs assisted in hunting and provided companionship. Step onto the trails and ladders and into the past as you experience life as an Ancestral Pueblo person.
Bandelier National Monument protects more than 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back more than 11,000 years. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs "Fat Man" & "Little Boy" on August 6 & 9, 1945 on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.
Imagine you’re a scientist living and working in 1943. One day, mysterious U.S. government men come to your home and convince you to move your family to a secret place to work on a secret project in service to your country. You travel to the remote mountains of New Mexico, into a high-security military base. Your family is given a crudely constructed house with a dirt floor. It isn’t until you report for work that you learn about the science question you’ll be working on. You cannot tell anyone about what you’re doing, not even your spouse. In fact, you don’t even fully know all that is happening. Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos and talk with Rangers and volunteers, stamp your National Park Service Passport book, join free walking tours, and pick up a Junior Ranger book.
Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. Discover extraordinary views and sulfur springs as you find yourself in the midst of an active geothermal system. Find evidence of Ancestral Native peoples in obsidian used for tools and weapons and shepherd’s signatures carved on trees. Reflect on a landscape where hunting and gathering were practiced successfully for more than 10,000 years. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.
Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.
Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail.
During Regular Park Hours, Check in at the Entrance Station
