Cory Styron Community Services Director
The Community Services Department was sanctioned as an accredited agency by the Commission for Accreditation for Park and Recreation Agencies(CAPRA) through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) on October 9, 2024, at their annual conference. With this Accreditation, Los Alamos County joins the other 206 agencies nationwide and is the first and only County in New Mexico accredited for following industry best practice standards.
NRPA's CAPRA Accreditation delivers quality assurance and improvement to accredited park and recreation departments throughout the United States. This operational management system improves our infrastructure; increases efficiency in activities; and demonstrates accountability within our community. Implementation of this system also strengthens teamwork among department staff, embeds all aspects of CAPRA into our department’s internal culture, and establishes a continuous improvement mindset for all department activities. The accredited status demonstrates to our community that the department is a professional organization committed to the best practices in the industry and embodies a spirit of continuous improvement to enrich the quality of life in our community.
The Community Services Department has been working to meet the 154 standards of the accreditation requirements for the past three years. The 154 standards cover 10 categories of best practices for parks and recreation agencies. The week of May 13-17, 2024, the department hosted the peer review committee to review its evidence of compliance and tour Los Alamos County facilities. The committee found that the Community Services Department met 154 of 154 standards, which is uncommon.
The community can review the standards, link to documents referenced in the self-assessment, and report from CAPRA at: www.losalamosnm.us/Government/Departments-and-Divisions/Community-Services/CAPRA
Staff is working with a contractor to redesign the Canyon Road medians to provide a better look, reduce water usage, and minimize pesticide use. The location is an extremely challenging due to the snow operations and heat of summer. Staff has made presentations to the Transportation Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for additional input.
Library staff has requested a place for outdoor learning. A task order has been issued to evaluate and design a concept for an outdoor classroom between the Mesa Public Library and the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Library staff has solicited and received feedback from the public on this project. Architectural changes to the design based on this feedback including cost estimates should arrive by June. Please contact Gwen Kalavaza, Library Manager at gwen.kalavaza@lacnm.us for more information.
As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation. The goal is to create a single guiding document for the community as we look to the future of managing our trails and open spaces, ensuring that people of all abilities can enjoy our natural environment. Community listening sessions are being held. Sites Southwest is working on the final draft and recommendations in late spring 2025.
This project is being led by Sites Southwest as we look at the park and picnic area. The desire is to upgrade the park using the American with Disabilities Act 2010. We plan to look at the paths, facilities, playgrounds, disk golf and roads. We are looking to renovate this park and see if we need to add, upgrade or improve the experience for the community. An initial listening session was held on June 4, 2025. Look for more opportunities participate in the discussion of the plan this fall.
Sites Southwest is the selected professional company for this planning exercise. Several listening sessions and design workshops have been held. Look for concepts and draft designs this summer and into the fall. The area is from the Flint Soccer Field along North Mesa Drive to the east where the existing playground is located. This is the largest park area the County has to develop for future use. This project is important as the conversation moves forward about the North Mesa Housing Plan. The project provides a forum to discuss the future needs of North Mesa and to think about the long-term future uses of the space.
Starting May 2025, the additional fields of Spiro Soccer, Senior Field and Bun Ryan Field will be renovated. These fields will be closed for the summer with an anticipated opening date of Oct 30, 2025. This project will also have additional fields for 2026 and 2027.
These Play Lots have been identified for renovation to enhance accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and to align with priorities outlined in the Community Services Department (CSD) Integrated Master Plan. The improvements will enhance safety, accessibility, and provide updated amenities for the community. The first public listening sessions were held for both playground sites, inviting input from residents. Feedback was additionally captured from 1st graders at Pinion Elementary School and 3rd graders at Mountain and Aspen Elementary. The children provide great feedback on the types of amenities they would like to see incorporated at these playgrounds. In Spring 2024, the draft designs were shared through multiple public engagement opportunities, including displays at both libraries, two in-person public meetings, and prominently placed design boards at both play lots. Following a thorough review of the feedback received, the designs were refined and finalized. Los Alamos Landscaping and More, LLC will begin the renovation in late Summer 2025 and completion is anticipated by Spring 2026.
Staff is refining the scope of work for the Urban Park athletic court renovations. Staff expects public input in the fall and early winter 2025 on these important upgrades for playability and accessibility.
Staff is working the scope of work. The purpose is to update the amenities and improve the accessibility of the parks so all are welcome and can use the parks. We will be looking for public input on the design of these playgrounds this fall.
This project will begin a significant upgrade of athletic courts in the community. The North Mesa Courts will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. We will start with a new base that is more stable and allows for a better playing experience. We expect to change at least one court into a tennis court as part of this process. The East Court Basketball Court needs attention as well. The courts will be updated to meet ADA requirements so that all users in our community feel welcomed and can enjoy the amenities. Bids were received in December 2024 and LA Landscape was selected for this project. As of March 2025, the contractor began the demolition process and construction of new courts will follow with an estimated completion dated early fall 2025. For information on this project, please contact Assistant Parks Superintendent, Emmanuel.abeyta@lacnm.us or (505) 663-1821.
The Los Alamos County Larry Walkup Aquatic Center was built in the late 1980’s and while other maintenance projects have taken place in recent years, the plaster shell of the Olympic Pool is the original. Plaster pool shells are designed to have a lifespan of 15 – 20 years; the Aquatic Center pool shell is well beyond its life expectancy and is showing its age.
Los Alamos County Recreation and Public Works team has a completed contract with Lee-sure Pools that includes, but not limited to the following scope of work: remove old plaster, remove and replace rebar if exposed, replaster pool, remove and replace pool tile, address tow ledge, install anchor cups, remove and replace pool lights, remove and replace handrails in main pool and therapy pool, install depth markers and “no diving” tiles, remove and replace starting blocks.
The Contract with Lee-sure Pools was presented and approved by County Council in May 2025. This project is currently projected to start in March 2026 through October 2026. Alternative swim locations are being explored to be able to help reduce the impact to the local swimming community.
The previous chiller was reaching the limit of its expected life cycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and was presenting malfunctions. Because of its condition, the previous chiller was not expected to make a reliable skating ice sheet.
Public Works is the lead on the chiller evaluation and replacement and is working with the Recreation Division. The initial evaluation developed a scope of work for the project. Los Alamos County rented a chiller unit for the 2023 – 2024 & 2024 - 2025 seasons. A customdesigned permanent chiller was installed in the Summer of 2025, and electrical tie-ins will be worked on until September, and is expected to be in service for the 2025 – 2026 season..
In addition to the Ice Rink chiller, there is concern for the concrete slab that supports the ice during the winter season, as it is also near its expected life cycle. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued on June 1, 2024; the team received one respondent. An agreement with R&M Construction was executed in August 2024, and the project kickoff meeting was held on August 15, 2024. Two public surveys have been conducted to gauge the importance of a shade structure, and the type of shade structure would be the most beneficial for the space. On June 10th, staff took the findings and a recommendation for a mono-sloped cover to County Council, where they approved the team to move forward with design.
NV5 is leading this project. The feasibility study has held several feedback meetings and public surveys regarding the project. NV5 is compiling all of the responses and public input. Look for additional conversations on this project over the summer and into the fall. The study is looking at specific fields, alignment, turf, lights, amenities, bleachers, fencing, netting, scoreboxes, and scoreboards. The fields would be upgraded to meet ADA requirements for fields and support the community Dark Sky initiative. The team is working on the final report that will be shared with community In August and September.
Staff secured a grant from the NM Department of Finance and Administration to assess, review, design, and establish construction documents of the project. This project kicked off this summer and involves listening sessions and additional public input. In the summer of 2024, the engineering team from Wilson’s determined the grandstand structure was not safe for use and the County closed the area. Demolition of the grandstand and shade was completed in December 2024. Public engagement meetings are complete, and the contractor is finalizing the plans. Staff is expecting construction to start in August or September.

The foundation of New Mexico farmers’ markets is that every family deserves access to fresh food and that farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. The Los Alamos Farmers’ Market started in 1970 as a great place to support local foods and buy directly from growers and producers. Now in its 55th year, the Farmers’ Market has stayed true to its mission of supporting local growers, ranchers, and food producers; preserving cultural identity and traditions; and creating valuable community gathering places. In keeping with Main Street America’s Four Points Approach, this venture also keeps important food dollars circulating in our community, where they are needed most.

Los Alamos County Community Services Department received the Kudos Award from the New Mexico Recreation and Park Association (NMRPA) for the Los Alamos County Seasonal Activity Guide at its annual conference in 2024.
The Kudos Award is presented to agencies who have significantly contributed to the public’s increased awareness and recognition of public parks, recreation, conservation agencies, and leisure service programs.
The Activity Guide is compiled and published by the Los Alamos County Community Services Department on a quarterly basis to provide the community and its surrounding region with events happening in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. It also provides information about local amenities, attractions, and indoor and outdoor activities.
The distribution efforts continuously expand, and now include locations in Espanola and Taos, with a combined total of 44 locations within Northern New Mexico. Additionally, the Community Services Department monitors the number of Activity Guides printed and distributed, to help reduce waste, and adjusts the dispersion numbers for each location and season.
The Community Services Department strives to reach all audiences, and its local and regional populations, as it is home to one of the largest employers in Northern New Mexico. Regardless of whether an individual resides in Los Alamos or not, they spend a great amount of time in Los Alamos County and they are part of the community and should be included.

This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works: As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it.
1. Pick up passport at the Nature Center
2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock.
3. Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).
4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Developed campgrounds offer a selection of amenities for users with RVs and tents. Many campgrounds are available by reservation:

Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, the Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs.
Explore unique sights, like Soda Dam and Jemez Falls, or take a short hike to Spence Hot Springs for a relaxing dip in the pools. Enjoy the unique red rock scenery, winding canyons, and breathtaking views, as you loop through the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) and enjoy fishing at Fenton Lake State Park, or a short side trip to the Gilman Tunnels—blasted through rock during the 1920s.
This 132-mile loop accommodates most vehicles and offers a convenient and rewarding way to experience the best of the Jemez Mountains—in just one day! Depart west from Los Alamos via NM501 and turn right onto NM4 toward Jemez Springs, traveling through Bandelier National Monument and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The road leads up more than 1,000 feet through the forest, cresting at an elevation of 9,000 feet.
East Fork Trail via Las Conchas Trail off NM4 is a 3.2 mile popular out-and-back trail that is primarily used for hiking and nature trips along the river. Climbing is also available along the trail. Dogs are able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
McCauley Warm Springs is a 3.4 mile popular out-and-back trail, accessible year-round. Start at Battleship Rock and hike two miles uphill to the springs, or start at the Jemez Falls trailhead to hike downhill first. Dogs are also able to use this trail. Want to enjoy the springs without the hike? Visit Spence Hot Springs, located a short 1/4 mile hike off NM4, just a few miles north of Soda Dam.
Some of our favorite trails connect to the surrounding national forest on the western and northern perimeters of Los Alamos. Discover these trails and find bubbling brooks, unique rock formations, wildlife, and in summer, an abundance of wildflowers!
Purchase trail maps and get hiking advice at the Los Alamos Nature Center. For more detailed information about the many places to seek adventure.
Explore this fascinating roadside attraction with pools, caves and rocks to climb on. Splash in the river to cool off, and enjoy the beautiful and unique scenery surrounding you. Dogs are also welcome at Soda Dam, but must be kept on leash.

Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs "Fat Man" & "Little Boy" on August 6 & 9, 1945 on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.
Imagine you’re a scientist living and working in 1943. One day, mysterious U.S. government men come to your home and convince you to move your family to a secret place to work on a secret project in service to your country. You travel to the remote mountains of New Mexico, into a high-security military base. Your family is given a crudely constructed house with a dirt floor. It isn’t until you report for work that you learn about the science question you’ll be working on. You cannot tell anyone about what you’re doing, not even your spouse. In fact, you don’t even fully know all that is happening.
Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos and talk with Rangers and volunteers, stamp your National Park Service Passport book, join free walking tours, and pick up a Junior Ranger book.
Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. Discover extraordinary views and sulfur springs as you find yourself in the midst of an active geothermal system. Find evidence of Ancestral Native peoples in obsidian used for tools and weapons and shepherd’s signatures carved on trees. Reflect on a landscape where hunting and gathering were practiced successfully for more than 10,000 years. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.
Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.
Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail.

Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.
The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.
Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the County.
Find more information about the County Trail Network online: losalamosnm.us

Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users. Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times.

The Pajarito Plateau is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including DEER, BLACK BEARS, RACCOONS, BOBCATS, SKUNKS, ELK, MOUNTAIN LIONS, FOXES, COYOTES, and more.
Alamos County we often live or play in habitats used by these wild animals. With a better understanding of these animals, we can coexist safely.
Bears eat almost anything available (i.e. insects, nuts and berries, plant matter, fish, birds, small mammals, and carrion), but rarely kill larger prey. Bears who have found available human sources, such as trash cans, gardens, and fruit trees, are more likely to seek them again. Follow these tips and tricks to minimize encounters as bears begin to look for food:
n Never intentionally feed bears to attract them for viewing.
n Don’t leave pet food or food dishes outdoors overnight.
n Never leave fruit from trees and bushes to rot on the ground as it is a powerful attractant to bears.
n Bring in bird feeders at night. These are high-calorie treats, and bears may stay and look for other food sources nearby.
n Never put meat or sweet-smelling food scraps in your compost pile.
n Clean and store outdoor grills after use. Bears can smell sweet barbecue sauce and grease for miles.
n Store garbage properly at all times. Only put roll carts out the morning of your trash pick up, and use bear-proof containers when available.
Deer eat specific nutritious plants in summer and woody plants in winter. Some of these plants rely on animals like deer and won’t germinate unless they pass through the digestive tract of an animal. When fed by humans, deer will stop foraging for food, negatively impacting the forest’s healthy ecosystem and how it supports all the wildlife of the forest.
Mule deer have specialized digestive tracks that contain specific bacteria to help break down only the plants they are meant to eat and are adapted to. Any human-provided food sources, including hay, apples, corn, etc., are simply not digestible. Fed mule deer often die from starvation with full stomachs of food they cannot digest.
FOR MORE INFORMATION and tips about the wildlife in Los Alamos County, visit the Living with Wildlife website at www.lacnm.com/wildlife.

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.
Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.
Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.
WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.
Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga (SUP): Take your fitness routine to the mat -- a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddleboarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddleboarding newbies.

Nestled at the base of the Jemez Mountains, atop the Pajarito Plateau, the Los Alamos County Golf Course offers a challenging 6,500 yard, par 72, 18-hole layout that gets turned into a cross-country ski playground when the snow arrives. The golf course, built in 1947 by the Atomic Energy Commission, is one of the oldest 18-hole golf courses in New Mexico, and underwent a renovation in 2024. Panoramic vistas and clear, fresh mountain air at an elevation of 7,400 feet, provide a beautiful setting to enjoy the winter wonderland and have great experiences.

The Los Alamos JJAB provides youth and their families with programs and services that work to reduce youth risk behaviors, facilitate positive development, and build resiliency. Their focus is on providing prevention, intervention, and diversion programs, by partnering with community organizations to collaborate, leverage, and coordinate resources. All JJAB programs and services are FREE. Visit losalamosjjab.com for additional information and class schedules.
The goal of this program is to surround the youth within our Community with the support to empower them to thrive in school and life. We provide connections to services for mental health, basic life needs, academic needs, social skills, special needs, and MORE! The Resource Specialist builds relationships with healthcare providers and others to provide assessments, identify challenges, resources needed, and assist with case coordination.
These are structured support groups for boys (Boys Council) and girls (Girls Circle), ages 10-18. Sessions are guided by an adult facilitator, to promote a supportive environment and provide a safe place to speak about issues. Topics focus on improving decision-making, self-esteem, resilience, substance abuse, violence, bullying, definitions of success, and family & relationship dynamics.
Sessions are typically held at the Los Alamos Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.
This Los Alamos affiliate program mails FREE books every month to children residing in Los Alamos County, from birth to age 5. It promotes and supports literacy, the love of reading, early age learning, and encourages adult-child engagement.
This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.
Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.
Instead of a one-size-fits all approach, the Seven Challenges Program is individualized with careful attention to meeting youth where they are at with their substance use. This program helps young people look at themselves, understand what it takes to give up a drug abusing lifestyle, and prepare for success when they commit to change. Groups are twelve weeks long and are held 3-4 times per year.
