As always, our community's well-being is our priority. The winter season can bring unique challenges, and our local social services are here to support you. Whether it's assistance with heating, family support programs, or connecting with resources for those in need, we are committed to ensuring that everyone in Los Alamos has access to the help they need to thrive.
We invite you to explore all that this winter season has to offer. Let’s make 2025–2026 a time of joy, growth, and celebration in our community!
Warmly,
Cory Styron Community Services Director

Los Alamos County Community Services Department received the Kudos Award from the New Mexico Recreation and Park Association (NMRPA) for the Los Alamos County Seasonal Activity Guide at its annual conference in 2024.
The Kudos Award is presented to agencies who have significantly contributed to the public’s increased awareness and recognition of public parks, recreation, conservation agencies, and leisure service programs.
The Activity Guide is compiled and published by the Los Alamos County Community Services Department on a quarterly basis to provide the community and its surrounding region with events happening in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. It also provides information about local amenities, attractions, and indoor and outdoor activities.
The distribution efforts continuously expand, and now include locations in Espanola and Taos, with a combined total of 44 locations within Northern New Mexico. Additionally, the Community Services Department monitors the number of Activity Guides printed and distributed, to help reduce waste, and adjusts the dispersion numbers for each location and season.
The Community Services Department strives to reach all audiences, and its local and regional populations, as it is home to one of the largest employers in Northern New Mexico. Regardless of whether an individual resides in Los Alamos or not, they spend a great amount of time in Los Alamos County and they are part of the community and should be included.

Staff is working with a contractor to redesign the Canyon Road medians to provide a better look, reduce water usage, and minimize pesticide use. The location is an extremely challenging due to the snow operations and heat of summer. Staff has made presentations to the Transportation Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for additional input.

Library staff have requested a place for outdoor learning. A task order has been issued for design and construction of this project. With input from the community design for an outdoor classroom between Mesa Public Library and the Betty Ehart Senior Center has been developed. Please contact Gwen Kalavaza, Library Manager at gwen.kalavaza@losalamosnm.gov for more information.

As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation. The result is to have a single guiding document for the community as look to the future for managing our trails and open space so all users and abilities can enjoy our natural environment. Community listening sessions are being held. Sites Southwest is working on the final draft. Parks and Recreation Board and County Council received the recommendations from the report.

This project is being led by Sites Southwest as we look at the park and picnic area. The desire is to upgrade the park using the American with Disabilities Act 2010. We plan to look at the paths, facilities, playgrounds, disk golf and roads. We are looking to renovate this park and see if we need to add, upgrade or improve the experience for the community. Initial Listening session was held on June 4, 2025, look for more opportunities participate in the discussion of the plan this fall and winter.

Sites Southwest is the selected professional company for this planning exercise. Several Listening sessions and design workshops have been held. The area is from the Flint Soccer Field along North Mesa Drive to the east where the existing playground is located. This is the largest park area the county has to develop for future use. This project is important as the conversation moves forward about the North Mesa Housing Plan. The project provides a forum to discuss the future needs of North Mesa and to think about the long-term future uses of the space. Look for concepts and draft designs this summer and into the fall. Staff is moving forward with final drafts for presentation to Parks and Recreation Board and County Council this fall and winter.

Beginning May 2025, the additional fields of Spiro Soccer, Senior Field and Bun Ryan Field will be renovated. These fields will be closed for the summer with an anticipated opening date of Oct 30, 2025. This project will also have additional fields for 2026 and 2027.

These Play Lots have been identified for renovation to enhance accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and to align with priorities outlined in the Community Services Department (CSD) Integrated Master Plan. The improvements will enhance safety, accessibility, and provide updated amenities for the community. The first public listening sessions were held for both playground sites, inviting input from residents. Feedback was additionally captured from 1st graders at Pinion Elementary School and 3rd graders at Mountain and Aspen Elementary. The children provided great feedback on the types of amenities they would like to see incorporated at these playgrounds. In Spring 2024, the draft designs were shared through multiple public engagement opportunities, including displays at both libraries, two in-person public meetings, and prominently placed design boards at both play lots. Following a thorough review of the feedback received, the designs were refined and finalized. Los Alamos Landscaping and More, LLC will begin the renovation in late Summer 2025 and completion is anticipated by Spring 2026.

Staff is refining the scope of work for the Urban Park athletic court renovations. Staff expects public input in the fall and early winter 2025 on these important upgrades for playability and accessibility.

Staff is working the scope of work. The purpose is to update the amenities and improve the accessibility of the parks so all are welcome and can use the parks. We will be looking for public input on the design of these playgrounds in fall 2025.

This project began a significant upgrade of athletic courts in the community. The North Mesa Courts were demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. We started with a new base that is more stable and allows for a better playing experience. We expect to change at least one court into a tennis court as part of this process. The East Court Basketball Court needed attention as well. The courts have been updated to meet ADA requirements so that all users in our community feel welcomed and can enjoy the amenities. Bids were received in December 2024 and LA Landscape was selected for this project. In March 2025, the contractor began the demolition process and construction of new courts will follow with an estimated completion date of Oct. 2025. For information on this project, please contact Assistant Parks Superintendent, Emmanuel.abeyta@losalamosnm.gov or (505) 663-1821.

The Los Alamos County Larry Walkup Aquatic Center was built in the late 1980’s and while other maintenance projects have taken place in recent years, the plaster shell of the Olympic Pool is the original. Plaster pool shells are designed to have a lifespan of 15 – 20 years; the Aquatic Center pool shell is well beyond its life expectancy and is showing its age.
Los Alamos County Recreation and Public Works team has a completed contract with Lee-sure Pools that includes, but not limited to the following scope of work: remove old plaster, remove and replace rebar if exposed, re-plaster pool, remove and replace pool tile, address tow ledge, install anchor cups, remove and replace pool lights, remove and replace handrails in main pool and therapy pool, install depth markers and “no diving” tiles, remove and replace starting blocks.
The Contract with Lee-sure Pools was presented and approved by County Council in May 2025. This project is currently projected to start in March 2026 through October 2026. Alternative swim locations are being explored to be able to help reduce the impact to the local swimming community.

The previous chiller was reaching the limit of its expected life cycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and was presenting malfunctions. Because of its condition, the previous chiller was not expected to make a reliable skating ice sheet.
Public Works is the lead on the chiller evaluation and replacement and is working with the Recreation Division. The initial evaluation developed a scope of work for the project. Los Alamos County rented a chiller unit for the 2023 – 2024 & 2024 - 2025 seasons. A customdesigned permanent chiller was installed in the Summer of 2025, and electrical tie-ins will be worked on until September, and is expected to be in service for the 2025 – 2026 season.

In addition to the Ice Rink chiller, there is concern for the concrete slab that supports the ice during the winter season, as it is also near its expected life cycle. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued on June 1, 2024; the team received one respondent. An agreement with R&M Construction was executed in August 2024, and the project kickoff meeting was held on August 15, 2024. Two public surveys have been conducted to gauge the importance of a shade structure, and the type of shade structure would be the most beneficial for the space. On June 10th, staff took the findings and a recommendation for a mono-sloped cover to County Council, where they approved the team to move forward with design.

NV5 is leading this project. The feasibility study has held several feedback meetings and public surveys regarding the project. NV5 is compiling all of the responses and public input. The study is looking at specific fields, alignment, turf, lights, amenities, bleachers, fencing, netting, scoreboxes, and scoreboards. The fields would be upgraded to meet ADA requirements for fields and support the community Dark Sky initiative. The team completed the final report that was shared with community at the September PRB & ESB Board meetings.

Staff secured a grant from the NM Department of Finance and Administration to assess, review, design, and establish construction documents of the project. This project kicked off the summer of 2024 and involved listening sessions and additional public input. In the summer of 2024, the engineering team from Wilson’s determined the grandstand structure was not safe for use and the County closed the area. Demolition of the grandstand and shade was completed in December 2024. Public engagement meetings are complete, and the contractor is finalizing the plans.

To encourage the integration of art into the architecture of municipal structures, increase the general public awareness of art, to visually enhance the community, to capture a part of our history for future generations, to promote the establishment of a collection of art with the works of artists who live or work, or who have lived or worked in Los Alamos County having a priority. The Art in Public Places fund is created for the express purposes of acquiring, installing and maintaining county-owned works of art and for the administrative support, cataloging, display and use attendant to the County's ownership of the works of art.
5:30pm, Mesa Public Library, 3rd Floor
For more information, contact Chelsea Ashcraft, Staff Liaison to the Art in Public Places Board or chelsea.ashcraft@losalamosnm.gov

In response to a request from the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization, the Art in Public Places Board supported the creation of a functional art gate to improve safety and enhance the stairwell area at the north side of the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Following a competitive public call for art and strong community input, “Los Alamos Heritage Gate” was selected.

The Art in Public Places Board is in the early stages of planning a Semi-Quincentennial Public Art Contest and Exhibit in partnership with Step Up Gallery at the Mesa Public Library. Scheduled for summer 2026, the exhibit will invite artists to submit original works celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. The show will include a public voting component, and selected artworks may be considered for acquisition into the County’s public art collection. Stay tuned for your chance to participate in this creative celebration of history, heritage, and community!

The Art in Public Places Board is purchasing a new sculpture for installation at the entrance of the Los Alamos Nature Center. The selected piece, “Raven Dialog, Friendly Advice” by Abiquiú artist Star York, was chosen through a public input process, including a community survey conducted during PEEC’s 2025 Earth Day celebration. The artwork will be mounted on a natural stone base to enhance its visibility and presence at the site. Installation is anticipated in late 2025.

The Art in Public Places Board is commissioning artist J Muzacz to install a glass tiled mosaic mural on the south-facing wall of the Los Alamos Justice Center. His design was developed through a multi-step public feedback process and celebrates native flora and fauna of Los Alamos. What makes this mural unique is its interactive creation process. Residents of all ages will be invited to help assemble sections of the mosaic during a hands-on community workday anticipated during the summer of 2026.

The Community Services Department was sanctioned as an accredited agency by the Commission for Accreditation for Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) on October 9, 2024, at their annual conference. With this Accreditation, Los Alamos County joins the other 206 agencies nationwide and is the first and only County in New Mexico accredited for following industry best practice standards.
NRPA's CAPRA Accreditation delivers quality assurance and improvement to accredited park and recreation departments throughout the United States. This operational management system improves our infrastructure; increases efficiency in activities; and demonstrates accountability within our community. Implementation of this system also strengthens teamwork among department staff, embeds all aspects of CAPRA into our department’s internal culture, and establishes a continuous improvement mindset for all department activities. The accredited status demonstrates to our community that the department is a professional organization committed to the best practices in the industry and embodies a spirit of continuous improvement to enrich the quality of life in our community.
The Community Services Department has been working to meet the 154 standards of the accreditation requirements for the past three years. The 154 standards cover 10 categories of best practices for parks and recreation agencies. The week of May 13-17, 2024, the department hosted the peer review committee to review its evidence of compliance and tour Los Alamos County facilities. The committee found that the Community Services Department met 154 of 154 standards, which is uncommon.
The community can review the standards, link to documents referenced in the self-assessment, and report from CAPRA at: www.losalamosnm.us/Government/Departments-and-Divisions/Community-Services/CAPRA .

The Community Services Department offers youth, teen and adult programs at the Golf Course, Ice Rink, Aquatic Center and other facilities in Los Alamos County. In addition, special events are held throughout the year at various locations in the community. This program is composed of beginning and experienced dancers, and the main focus is to have fun, while learning and practicing to dance better. There is a variety of teachers from Los Alamos, some who have competed in competitive Ballroom and Latin Dance at the University level and who take care to offer lessons for a range of dance abilities. Waltz, Tango, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep have been some of the dances they have focused on, with the possibility of more on the horizon. Generally this group spends one or two months focusing on one particular dance. The evening includes a mix of lessons, dancing practice, good music and a generous helping of laughter.

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.
Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.
Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.
WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.
Paddle Board Yoga: Take your fitness routine to the mat - a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddleboarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddleboarding newbies.

Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

But no matter what we love, we love it passionately. And we want to talk about it, make buttons celebrating it, and convince other people why certain ships are the best ships. All fandoms invited!

The basis for the Farmers Market is that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. Supporting local growers, ranchers, and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where they are needed most. The Los Alamos Farmers Market started in 1970 as a great place to support local foods and buy direct from growers and producers. This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works:
1. As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it
2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock
3. Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).
4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Los Alamos County Community Services Department received the Parks/Ground Maintenance Award from the New Mexico Recreation and Park Association (NMRPA) for Ashley Pond at its annual conference.
The Parks/Grounds Maintenance Award is presented to agencies for the outstanding maintenance of parks, entryways, athletic fields, medians, or trails
The Los Alamos County Parks and Open Space Division maintains Ashley Pond, the pride and joy of our community. Today, Ashley Pond is a pleasant downtown landmark of Los Alamos. Situated near the center of town, it is used for picnics, walks, and outdoor concerts in the summer.
The landscape maintenance schedule consists of mowing, weeding, and edging once weekly, 30 weeks per year. The services provided by the area crew are weeding, edge trimming, trash pickup, tree and shrub pruning, and general landscaping.
Ashely Pond falls under the Mode 1 Standard as the park has some level of service performed daily due to the number of events and foot traffic. Two pavilions will be built this fall, with an anticipated start date in November 2024. These pavilions will not only serve our residences and visitors, but they will also be ADA-accessible.

The Pajarito Plateau is home to a wide variety of wildlife... In Los Alamos County we often live or play in habitats used by these wild animals. With a better understanding of the wildlife around us, we can coexist safely.
NEVER feed the wildlife...
• Be a smart wildlife watcher and help keep wildlife wild. Do not put out food for any animals. Let them stick to their natural diet. Feeding wildlife isn’t safe for the animals or for you.
• Store your food and stash your trash. You may unintentionally feed wildlife by leaving trash or crumbs behind. Be sure to clean up after yourself after meals and practice Leave No Trace principles.
• Give the animals room. Always keep a safe distance when watching wildlife.
WATCH for wildlife on the roadways in the winter…
As the temperature drops and the days get shorter, more vehicles will be on the road at times when wildlife are most active: DAWN AND DUSK
Follow these simple tips to reduce the chances of a dangerous collision:
• SLOW DOWN and look for movement
• AVOID OTHER DISTRACTIONS within the car
• WATCH FOR HERD ANIMALS
• EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
PREVENT Rodent Problems…
As it gets colder outside, rodents are drawn inside to nooks and crannies in and around your home. Keep these unwanted invaders out with these best practices:
• SEAL ENTRY POINTS and INSTALL DOOR SWEEPS
• STORE ALL FOOD in airtight containers
• USE TIGHTLY SEALED GARBAGE BINS
• REMOVE HOUSEHOLD CLUTTER and clear away debris around buildings

Imagine your home carved from volcanic tuff and your crops planted in mesa top fields. Corn, beans, and squash were central to your diet, supplemented by native plants and meat from deer, rabbit, squirrel and domesticated turkeys. Your dogs assisted in hunting and provided companionship. Step onto the trails and ladders and into the past as you experience life as an Ancestral Pueblo person.
Bandelier National Monument protects more than 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back more than 11,000 years. Petroglyph, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.

Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs "Fat Man" & "Little Boy" on August 6 & 9, 1945 on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.
Imagine you’re a scientist living and working in 1943. One day, mysterious U.S. government men come to your home and convince you to move your family to a secret place to work on a secret project in service to your country. You travel to the remote mountains of New Mexico, into a high-security military base. Your family is given a crudely constructed house with a dirt floor. It isn’t until you report for work that you learn about the science question you’ll be working on. You cannot tell anyone about what you’re doing, not even your spouse. In fact, you don’t even fully know all that is happening.
Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos and talk with Rangers and volunteers, stamp your National Park Service Passport book, join free walking tours, and pick up a Junior Ranger book.

About 1.2 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 14-mile-wide circular depression now known as Valles Caldera. The park is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and embraces a rich cultural history. Nature abounds here, so be prepared for changing weather conditions. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you
Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Up to 40 passes are available daily, from May 15 through November 15. Visit Recreation.gov to reserve a pass or stop by the Volcano Discovery Center for a day-of pass.

We invite you to participate in a ranger program or special event during your visit. Valles Caldera National Preserve offers engaging programs all year-round. Visit nps.gov for details.

Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.
The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.
Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the County.
Find more information about the County Trail Network on-line: losalamosnm.us - Click on “Recreation”
Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only. Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails.
Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Pueblo room blocks, pot shards, petroglyphs, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Let all cultural resources lie undisturbed.
Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.
Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times.
Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid.
Trailhead guides are available at major trailheads, the Los Alamos County Customer Care Center in the Municipal Building, the Los Alamos Nature Center, and on-line.
