Dear Parents/Carers It has been a great few weeks in school and the students are really settled now and back in the routine. It has been wonderful to open the doors to the school and to invite visitors back on site.

The Year 7 Open Morning was very successful, with every talk and tour fully booked. This week, we have also had lots of families on morning tours to see the school ‘in action’. I am so proud of this school and the students. The feedback from the visitors has been very positive about the purposeful environment, the wonderful facilities, the enthusiasm of the teachers and most importantly, how smart, polite and helpful all the students are. We have welcomed the Globe Players to the school - a drama company which performed to our Year 8s, 9s and 10s. Their aim was to bring the text to life for our students. The introduction to Shakespeare for the Year 8s was complemented by the performance of the GCSE texts, Romeo and Juliet and An Inspector Calls to our GCSE students.

This week, Year 9 have enjoyed a Drop Down Day, Prison Me - No Way ! The feedback we have received from Year 9 so far, has been incredibly positive. They really enjoyed the opportunity to explore some fairly hard hitting and in some cases very sensitive issues. The PMNW company commented on the excellent attitudes and conduct of our Year 9 students who really embraced this opportunity.

Our assemblies over the last few weeks have focussed on internet safety and ‘sexting.’ Miss Dyer, our Designated Safeguarding lead has today shared with you all our updated Relationship, Sex and Health Education Policy. All students also had the opportunity to attend their first House Assembly last week for what seems like a very long time since the last one. Mr Warry, who is leading the House system in school, has shared lots of opportunities for students to get involved in house competitions. Please take a look at the House page on the website for more details. We are currently recruiting House Leaders from all Year groups. Your son/daughter should have received an email asking them to apply - another fantastic opportunity for student leadership.

Miss Larkin and Mr Price, Assistant Headteachers, are also currently recruiting for the Student Voice team of 2021/22. If your son/daughter is interested in having their say and contributing to school life, please, again, get them to check their school email for details of how to apply.

We have also welcomed Mr Harrison, the Head of 6th Form at Bancroft’s, who came and provided some additional support for our Oxbridge and dentistry students. We were hugely grateful and look forward to further developing this great relationship. We have also re-launched our Enrichment programme with our 6th form, which offers a plethora of opportunities including the Gold Duke of Edinburgh, Core Maths, sports, student mentoring and volunteering. It was also fantastic to welcome lots of our Year 11 parents back on to the school site for our ‘Year 11 Transition Evening’. The evening was held to support both students and parents in getting ready for their final GCSE year. It was a great opportunity to revisit our ‘RVHS Tried and Tested Revision & Study Techniques’ and re-launch our GCSE microsite. If you want to view our GCSE Revision microsite, please click here. During the evening, we also handed out a revision pack, bespoke for each student. The pack contained revision guides for all of our core subjects. If your son/daughter still need to pick up their pack, please tell them to see Mrs Preston.

You may have heard in the media this week, that the government has made some announcements about the Summer 2022 Exams. They are going ahead but they will aim to make them 'fairer for all'. I attach the latest guidance/ press release for your perusal. As a school, we will continue with our rigorous preparations for the exams and ensure that all our students reach their potential. Most importantly, that they have the qualifications for their next steps, whether that be sixth form, college, apprenticeships or university. We are still waiting for more detailed curriculum guidance and will share this with students and parents in Years 11 and 13 as soon as we have received any further information.

Last Saturday we opened our school for our 2021 Open Morning, welcoming over 750 Year 6 parents and children to our event, they attended a presentation by the Headteacher and were then taken on a tour around the school by a member of our Leadership team. We would like to thank everyone including our students and PTA for giving up their Saturday to support us in making this event so successful. After the quick uprising of Covid 19 everyone was put into an immediate lockdown. It was confusing but my school swiftly started home learning. It wasn't hard but extremely different to the ‘normal world’.

My dad, my brother and I started doing couch to 5k to keep us occupied while my mum was keeping us entertained at home.

As 1 month went by my Grandad had tested positive with Covid 19. After a few days he had high temperatures and deadly coughs.

An ambulance was called, and he was sent to hospital. My mum was especially sad and distraught knowing the fact her dad was lying alone in a bed constantly having to inhale oxygen. Everyday my mum called the hospital and my dad, my brother and I were hoping for him to be in a better state.

In April he was admitted to a ventilator, but he made a miraculous recovery and was sent home in a week. After he was sent back and then put on a ventilator. He suffered badly for a week or so.

On May 4th he was 100 percent relying on oxygen. He later died that day and almost a year later we still remember him as a father, grandfather, a husband and a friend to many.

Yesterday, we started Knitting Union Club, and as you can see from the photo, the turnout was fabulous!

Due to the high number of students that want to take up knitting we are asking parents if they have any spare any yarn / knitting needle they would be willing to donate to our Creative Arts department.

Prison Me, No Way! On the 29th September the Year 9 students were treated to a very valuable life experience from the PMNW team. These are former Prison guards, Health workers, Youth workers and in some cases former prisoners’ who work together with schools to promote an understanding that all choices have consequences. In some cases, those choices have a lifelong effect on the individual.

The day consisted of workshops: a visit to a cell, First Aid, County Lines, Gangs, Knife Crime, Domestic violence and an insightful and moving true story from a former prisoner. All these workshops aim to show how to stay safe in this troubled world. They are the workshops that students remember for a long time in their school career and in some cases long after they have left our care.

The students were impeccably well behaved and encouraged to discuss various situations and how the law affects their life.

They also were given an insight into how the choices that they make may impact on their future.

PMNW always comment on how welcoming and friendly our students are and how they present to guests.

Well done to all of our students that entered the Heroes Stamp Design Competition during May this year, as your designs contributed towards a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the largest postage stamp design competition!

On Friday 17th September, as part of their induction into Roding Valley Sixth Form, our Year 12 students visited Lambourne End for a team building day. They had a fantastic time participating in lots of energetic activities that promote confidence, self-belief and help them to get to know other students in their Year group

Year 7 It is with great pride that I write this entry for the school bulletin. I can't tell you how pleased I am with the cohort of year 7s. They have settled into life so well here at Roding Valley High School. Every morning, they line up in their form groups and they behave incredibly well. Plus, their uniform is impeccable.

I have asked all of the Academic Mentors to make a note of those students who may be struggling with their uniform or with remembering their equipment. They may contact you to see if there is anything we can do to help.

You can also purchase stationery/school equipment via our school website. If you purchase these via ParentPay, we will ensure that your child gets what you've ordered. If you need a replacement timetable, please email timetable@rodingvalley.net. As the weather has changed and it is colder in the evenings, I would like to recommend that now is the time to invest in a warm/waterproof blue or black coat.

One piece of equipment that is essential has arrived and that is our order of Chromebooks. These have been handed out today and will be really beneficial for your child's home learning. If you missed our last window and would like to order one, please contact Mr Vermaak at mvermaak@rodingvalley.net As the Chromebooks have now arrived we will be holding our digital week. The dates of this will follow. If there are any issues accessing Google Classroom or EduLink, please let your child's Academic Mentor know Students have been taking part in our Personal Development lessons and it is so exciting to run from room to room and hear the different conversations that are happening. This week we have been talking about digital safety and how to keep ourselves safe online. Could I ask that you make sure your child's privacy settings are set to the maximum.

It is great to see the children playing on our Astro, however, to be on the Astro they do need to wear the correct footwear. Our sports clubs are up and running as are many of our extra-curricular clubs, including our home learning club. This is an opportunity for students to complete any home learning they may be struggling with.

Students are able to attend this club and complete any home learning they have.

I would like to thank Evie Twyford, Ava Tomlinson, Charlotte Williamson and Leo Swindell for their incredible speeches last week at open morning. They were amazing ambassadors for the school as were the volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning and helped out in different departments around the school. Congratulations to Matthew Sutton who placed 2nd in Squash in Essex.

As I have said already, I am immensely proud or the year group and the start that they have made. I look forward to speaking to you all as the year goes by.

Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader

Year 8 As we approach the end of another week, I continue to be impressed and proud of Year 8 students who continue to thrive at Roding Valley High School. I have had the pleasure of going into some personal development sessions in the last couple of weeks and it is great to see so many students sharing some of their passions and journeys with myself and their academic mentor. The engagement our students have for these sessions in particular are incredible. For our Personal Development sessions, we are now onto our fifth session of the rolling timetable, which has created such an amazing and positive adaptation to the character and culture programme.

Our extra-curricular clubs continue to thrive; it is always great to see Year 8 students taking up these opportunities which are vital in their development through Secondary School. If you have not tried something new since commencing year 8, go and get involved!

Can I remind all students of our uniform protocol, especially footwear where school shoes should be worn. If there is any reason why your son/daughter cannot wear shoes, please provide a note to their academic mentor.

Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader

Year 9 What a busy start to Year 9 we have seen! All students have now well and truly settled into this new academic year and the increased vigour that comes with it. I have really enjoyed popping into a variety of different lessons to see all our students engaged and challenged. I have seen some brilliantly presented work, which was neat, tidy and well structured; which they should all be very proud of it.

Our new period 1 program has seen students commence their bedrock session every Monday, which is an initiative to improve literacy as well as take part in a career’s session every Tuesday morning. We have had some amazing and completely bespoke Personal Development lessons delivered by our team of Academic Mentors every Thursday and Friday morning. These sessions have touched on some really important topics such as intimate relationships, risks and what it means to be me. These have proved to be a great success and is something our students look forward to each week.

On Wednesday our whole year group participated in the ‘Prison me, No Way’ day which saw them hear from different guest speakers, telling first-hand accounts of various issues from gangs, knife crime, prison and county lines. This is always a very successful day, and Wednesday was no exception. Students were truly engaged and amazed at some of the stories that were told. An invaluable learning experience for all.

We have now seen the restart of clubs and fixtures and it was a pleasure to take our Netballers to a tournament in Harlow last night. They did us all proud with their exceptional display of sportsmanship and comradery. I look forward to many more fixtures doing out over the coming weeks and encourage all of you to get involved in as much as possible; from PE to drama to food technology.

We have just launched an exciting new trip opportunity for students in year 9 which will see them travel to Manchester for a Premier League match, training session and stadium and football museum tour. Please do refer to letters that were circulated today for further information. Places are limited so please complete your deposit payment ASAP. As always, please can I reiterate our high standards regarding uniform. Students should only be wearing full RVHS PE kit on the 2 days a week that they have PE, and this must include their blazer and white socks. This should not be worn at any other times.

As we head into the second half of this half term, I encourage you to get in touch with your child's academic mentor, to discuss any queries or concerns that you may have to ensure your child is well supported going into the rest of this important school year.

Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 10 Another great few weeks and a really positive start to the Year. The Year group enjoyed a visit from the Shakespeare Company and were praised for their mature attitude and concentration levels. I would like to remind everyone about some key bits of information, firstly uniform. The uniform requirements are on the school's website, all students must wear shoes and not trainers. I will give a limited-time trainer pass to students if they have a note from a parent / carer or a medical note, if these factors are not fulfilled then there will be a sanction. Year 10 home learning is essential and as part of the GCSE program all students need to engage with the work set, this can be accessed through the variety of systems we have at RVHS. This includes Google Classroom and Edulink.

Recently the Year 10s have shown a complete disregard for litter and the area that they use during lunch time has on occasion looked awful. Please could I ask that you talk to your children about the importance of placing litter into a nearby bin and not leaving their used lunch items on the floor or in a bush. The importance of reducing plastic pollution is essential and students need to use the recycling bins which are located on the main playground.

Can I also ask all students to clear their lockers by Wednesday, their new lockers will be situated in the Maths block. An email has been sent out with instructions.

Dear Parents and Carers On 25 September 2021, we welcomed 750+ Year 6 parents and children to our Open Day. It seems likely that the new Year 7 intake in September 2022 will be full and a waiting list may develop. Our Sixth Form is full. After 18 months we are finally returning to normal school life.

WILL YOU HELP OUR SCHOOL AND ITS STUDENTS? Our PTA works incredibly hard. They are all parents of students past and present. They are a vital link between the school and the students. They fund raise, they provide support at school functions, they are you!

Their efforts provide all our students with those little extras like benches and tables in the playground, our Table Tennis table and so on.

The PTA are our unsung heroes.

PLEASE JOIN THEM. We would like to arrange a disco for Year 7 this term, followed by family quiz nights, family bingo and any great idea will be more than welcome. It is always incredibly popular, but it needs volunteers to help.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

Classroom How to Log on to Google Classroom?

Students can log into their Gmail using their school email address and their password. Their school email will be the year they started at RVHS started plus their first initial and surname @rodingvalley.net (example- 19plarkin@rodingvalley.net).

Once your child has have logged in, they will need to click on the google apps button and then select ‘Google Classroom’ Your child will then be able to see all of the classes they belong to.

They will then need to click on the class they want to use resources for and take a look at everything that their class teacher has posted for them to work on. They will be able to download items and make comments on them. Teachers will be regularly posting new work on their Google Classrooms.

What to Do if your child is a Missing a Subject their Google Classroom?

If your child is missing a Google Classroom for one of their subjects, they will need to click on the addition symbol, followed by ‘Join Class’ and then enter the Class Code for their missing subject.

Class Codes are available from their subject teacher.

Top Tips for Our Students  Students must keep up to date with their lessons by using Google Classroom every day.  Use their workbooks to complete the work shown on their Google Classroom.  Don’t slack on presentation! Keep their notes in order of the lessons on the Google Classroom.  Year 11 and 13 Students: There will be revision materials available on Google Classroom.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum.

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature.

Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned.

These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

What is Seneca?

Seneca is a free home learning & revision platform that is very popular with our students. It is based on cognitive science, has adaptive learning and can be accessed by our students via their phones!

What Content is available to our Students through Seneca?

Seneca has resources available for KS3, KS4 and KS5 students that has been supplied to them from AQA, OCR, EdExcel Pearson and IGCSE. Our students will be able to access content designed for each of their subjects and also for their specific courses.

There is so much to choose from.

Some areas are even linked to the Exam Boards Course Specifications.

How to Access Seneca?

Once Logged in Once they are logged in, students are able to search for different subject areas and learn about their chosen topic. At the end of each subject presentation there will be a quiz on the presentation This Online tool will enable our students to stay on top of their home learning.
