Message from the Headteacher

Dear Roding Valley High School Community

As we return from the Easter break, I am pleased to share with you the numerous activities and achievements that have taken place in our school community.

The dedication of our Year 11 and 13 students was evident during the Easter revision sessions. It was inspiring to see over 130 students attending daily, engaging in various subjects to prepare for their upcoming exams. This level of commitment is commendable and sets a positive tone for the challenges ahead. For these students, GCSE and A-Level exams are fast approaching. We wish them the very best as they enter this crucial period. Parents of these students can expect more information about intervention classes and May half-term revision sessions in due course. The dedication shown by all our students over the past few months has been truly remarkable. We look forward to seeing their hard work reflected in their upcoming exams.

Before the break, our Year 12 students had the opportunity to visit the University of Southampton, broadening their horizons and exploring potential future pathways. Additionally, our Year 9 students embarked on an exciting ski trip to Italy, which proved to be an enjoyable and enriching experience for all involved. Trips and events such as this are a crucial component of our enrichment offer and I would like to thank the five members of staff who attended the ski trip over Easter for their time and effort in preparing the trip and ensuring a lot of fun was had.

This week, we see our Duke of Edinburgh participants undertaking their Bronze training expedition. This programme continues to offer valuable life skills and experiences to our students and is absolutely loved by our students. No doubt there will be a few sore legs on Monday.

Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate the Year 7 Jack Petchey Speak Out competition next week, showcasing the public speaking talents of our younger students. This will take place after their weekly assembly and will be watched by the whole year group as well as the Extended Leadership Team. Good luck to all those who are taking part.

I would like to take this opportunity to bid farewell to Ms Reed, our Associate Assistant Headteacher, as she begins her maternity leave. We extend our warmest wishes to her and her family as they welcome their second child. Ms Anghel will be stepping in to cover her role in the PE department, while Ms Wills and Mr John will oversee her Head of Year responsibilities. We have ensured additional support for our Year 9 students as they transition into their GCSEs after the May half-term and are confident that the extra capacity we have added will give them the best possible start to life in key stage 4.

We are delighted to welcome Ms Adams, our new music teacher joining us from Queen Elizabeth Girls' School. Her extensive experience in developing choirs, orchestras, and bands promises an exciting future for our music department, working alongside Mr Savage. We also extend a warm welcome to Ms Tasdan, our new science teacher who joins on an initial temporary basis until the summer.

Congratulations to Mrs Wrate, who is embarking on her SENCO national professional qualification (NPQ) this term.

Please note that we have a short half-term ahead, further shortened by the bank holiday on Monday 5th Mayschool will be closed on this day.

I hope that you have a fantastic start to the new term and as always, I thank you for your continued support.

Year 8 News

Message from Miss Burke

I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Easter break with family and friends.

This half term is a short one, just four and a half weeks until our next break, so it’s more important than ever that Year 8 maintains high standards in all areas. A shorter half term also means it’s a very realistic goal for every student to aim for 100% attendance, both to school and to all lessons. Every day counts, and being present plays a key role in both academic progress and personal development.

The term after Easter is a fantastic opportunity for a fresh start and a strong finish to the year. Let’s continue working together to ensure our students make the most of it.

Please contact your child’s form tutor in the first instance should you have any concerns or questions.

LOST PROPERTY

To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net

We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.

Year 9 News

Message from Miss Reed

A warm welcome back to students and parents/carers to the Summer term. I trust everyone had a restful Easter Break and spent time with family and friends.

Students will very soon be receiving their confirmation letters with their confirmed option subjects. A reminder that GCSE courses will begin after May half term. This is a very exciting

time for students but also quite nerve racking for them. I encourage students to reach out if they are worried about anything. For any option queries, please email mvermaak@rodingvalley.net

At the end of last term, we celebrated Year 9 students’ achievements over the past term. This includes attendance, house points, attitude and progress in subject areas. Please see below the link to all of our award winners - Easter Celebration Assembly I would like to specifically mention Isabella Mcloughlin who won the Headteachers award for her continuous fantastic attitude, being a brilliant sports leader and leading the Year 9 Netball team to become District champions!

Year 9 Netball District Champions

On Tuesday 1st April, the Year 9 Netball team travelled to St Mark's School in Harlow for the WESSA District Netball finals. The game was very close throughout with RVHS staying in front by 1 or 2 goals along the way. In the final quarter, the RVHS team held their cool and pulled away finally winning 22-18 making them District champions! Well done team!!

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. Dear Parent/Carers

Punctuality to school

If your child is late, you must ensure you call the school before 8.30am.

We understand there may be heavy traffic on the road from time to time, please allow enough time to navigate the traffic.

When a child is absent or late for school, this causes disruption to the rest of the class and causes your child to fall behind.

Many thanks - Attendance team

Year 11 News

Message from Ms Wills

It was a great pleasure to see the students receive their PPE2 results on the last day of term on our mock results day. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the hall with students really engaging in the process. The message given was for them to reflect on how they felt receiving these results and to think about what needed to be done in the lead up to the final exams in May.

A reminder of the exam timetable here. Individual timetables can be found on Edulink.

It was wonderful to see so many students attending the revision sessions over Easter. Classes were full and teachers commented about how engaged student were in the different lessons. There will be another set of sessions in May half term and a timetable will be sent out nearer the time.

We also held the GCSE information evening last night, to give information about the upcoming exams. If you were unable to attend please click on this link to view. I will also be going over this in assembly with the students next week.

As we approach the exams parents often ask how they can best support their child. Please click on the two links below for advice on preparing for exams and also on results day

Message from Ms Wheaton & Mrs Curling 6th Form News

Tuesday 25th March – Sports Exercise a UCL/Firefighter at LFB

What a career journey! Our alumni guest speaker Joseph Warwick left in 2005 and came back to share his story with sixth form students at Roding Valley. Now a UCL lecturer in Sport and Medical Science and a member of the London Fire Brigade, students heard how Joe's determination and resilience enabled him to go on and achieve. As he said, career pathways are not linear but there are always pathways to achieve your dreams! Thanks Joe, you were inspirational!

Wednesday 26th March – Civil Service Fast Stream

Roding Valley Sixth Form opened in 2015 and on Wednesday we welcomed back a student from our very first cohort. Eight years ago, Olivia was the first student to leave our sixth form and attend the University of Cambridge. Now employed in the Civil Service, what an insight she gave the sixth form students. Resilience, determination, participating in as many opportunities as possible and seeking support from those around you were just some of her key messages! It was so lovely to see you again Olivia thank you for sharing your journey.

Wednesday 26th March – Bancroft University and Apprenticeship Fair

Year 12 students visited this bespoke university and apprenticeship fair, giving them direct access to representatives from a wide range of institutions and companies. As students begin thinking about what their next steps after sixth form might look like, we hope that this inspired them to think about which universities they need to visit in the coming months and which career paths they might like to investigate. Well done to year 12 for their maturity and inquisitive nature on this trip.

Friday 28th March – Chelsea Cobham Cup

Even our own Samuel Caffall helping at the British Airways stand!!

It was a great pleasure to see the students receive their PPE2 results on the last day our mock results day. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the hall with students really engaging in the process. The message given was for them to reflect on how they felt receiving these results and to think about what needed to be done in the lead up to the final exams in May.

On Friday the 28th March, the Roding Valley Sixth Form team had the opportunity to take part in the Cobham Cup, held at the home of Chelsea FC. The cup involved 9 teams, broken in two groups, in order to get through to the final you needed to top the group.

Roding Valley’s first game ended in a draw, both teams trying to get off to a good start but equally solid in defence. The second fixture ended in 3-1 to the opposition, a tough game both physically and technically. However, in our last game of the day we managed to get three points and a hatful of goals meaning we ended the group in second and narrowly missed out on the top spot.

A great day for all involved with the squad, unfortunately wasn’t the result we wanted but we can look to build for next year.

Monday 31st March – Spring Celebration Assembly

It was lovely to see all the Sixth Form together for a Celebration assembly on the last Monday before we broke for the Easter break.

Tuesday 1st April – 2TG Barristers Clerk

On Wednesday 1st April we welcomed Billy Hammonds, a Barristers Clerk from 2TG. What an invaluable insight he gave to sixth form students about his role. Often a career that students know little about, it was so interesting to hear how you can get into this role straight away after A Levels.

Wednesday 2nd April – Tysers Junior Insurance Broker

Millie came back today to talk about the role of an Insurance Broker at Tysers. After leaving Roding Valley only 8 months ago, Millie said it felt like coming home! Students often find it hard to understand exactly what a job entails but Millie gave such a detailed account of a 'day in the life of a junior broker' we actually ran out of time for questions! Millie’s presentation was brilliant!

Thursday 3rd April – Y12 University of Southampton

Year 12 students visited the University of Southampton to support them with understanding what their next steps might look like. This campus university showed off the pros of student life and gave them a taste of what undergraduate study might look like. It gave the year group food for thought and we look forward to working with them on their applications in the coming months.

‘The lectures were interesting and it was great to have an insight on student life at university’ - Kanika

‘I thoroughly enjoyed observing the university's excellent facilities and I found the lectures very intriguing!’ - Samuel

What an incredible week we had on our Year 9 ski trip to Italy! From the moment we arrived, every student threw themselves into the experience with enthusiasm, determination, and a fantastic attitude.

The progress made throughout the week was truly impressive. Each and every student moved up a level in ski school, thanks to their commitment, resilience, and engagement with their instructors. Whether they were carving down the slopes for the first time or mastering more advanced runs, their effort and teamwork shone through.

Outside of the lessons, the students embraced all of the activities with energy and positivity, making the most of every moment. It was a pleasure to lead such a brilliant group supportive of one another, respectful, and always ready for the next challenge.

The medal ceremony at the end of the trip was a proud moment for all involved, celebrating not just skiing achievements, but a week full of personal growth, shared memories, and a lot of laughs. Well done, Year 9 you were a credit to the school!

Year 7s are studying Greek Theatre in their drama lessons, and have been set the task of creating their own Greek Theatre style masks. Here is Lavin, who was the first person to arrive with her mask this week. It's a really amazing depiction of the Titan, Medusa, complete with writhing snakes!

Year 10 GCSE Drama students have been studying their set text, the Pilot Theatre version of Noughts & Crosses. Students need to know how to respond to exam questions about both acting and design, so one of the ways we learn about set design is to build model boxes, just like professional set designers. Suden's model of her set, complete with a revolve and additional platforms, staged in a thrust configuration, is simply the most impressive piece of 3D work we have seen in the department. She is rightly proud of her work. You can see this work and other examples of what our drama students get up to by following #TeamDrama on Instagram: @RodingDrama

Students from Yeaer 8 to 12 will be taking the brandnew show, Brain Play, to the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch, on Wednesday 7th May. Students performed the show for the first time before Easter, to an audience of friends and parents, and a visiting director from the National Theatre. The director was really impressed with the students' characterisation and creativity, but also gave us plenty of notes about how to improve before the performance in Hornchurch. Brain Play is about Mia, a teenager who becomes a carer for her own father, after he suffers a brain injury. The story is told with a mix of realistic acting, Greek choral work and puppetry! This is the fourth year in a row that RVHS has entered the NT Connections festival, and students will soon be invited to take part in next year's project. Please support our students by attending the NT Connections festival. Tickets are available from the Queen's Theatre box office.

Year 8 Artwork

Feast your eyes on the fantastic foodthemed artwork created by our talented Year 8 artists! From vibrant fruit bowls to delicious-looking dinners, their creativity and skills are really shining through. The Art Department are so impressed with how enthusiastically students embraced this project, really going above and beyond with their imaginative ideas and techniques.

Top two are by Amelia Hanafi and the one to the right is by Amelia Sojka

This week our Year 10 GCSE RS class have been making Christingles for their study on practises within Christianity. A Christingle is a symbolic object used in the Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany services of many Christian denominations. It symbolises the birth of Christ, the Light of the World. A modern Christingle is made from a candle in an orange which is typically decorated with a red ribbon and sweets or dried fruit.

The cooking club members where amazing this week, they baked and decorated a Easter bunny. They were so excited and they watched Mrs Abbott demonstrate how to cut out the shapes and icing. Take a look at their fantastic outcomes!

Congratulations to the following students for their fantastic work in Literacy and during Drop Everything and Write (DEAW)

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
