Message from the Headteacher

Dear Roding Valley High School Community

This half-term has moved at an incredible pace and so much has been achieved by students across the school.

Firstly, I would like to address the recent government announcement regarding a partially funded pay rise for teachers. This development is welcome news as it helps to alleviate some of the financial pressures that schools have been facing across the country. We are also awaiting confirmation about funding for our Mandarin Excellence programme, which continues to be a valuable part of our curriculum offering.

Our students have been actively engaged in a variety of enriching experiences beyond the classroom. Year 12 EPQ students recently visited the British Library, enhancing their research skills and broadening their academic horizons. Year 10 students participated in a fascinating forensics workshop at the Royal Institution, applying scientific principles to real-world scenarios. Additionally, some of our students had the opportunity to visit Chelsea FC's training ground in Cobham, providing insight into professional sports facilities.

I am delighted to report that the construction work on the building affected by RAAC is progressing well. We are currently ahead of schedule, which is excellent news considering the original completion date was set for Easter 2026. Our art, photography, business, and ICT rooms are being upgraded as part of this project. We are now looking ahead to plan for the removal of the temporary facilities and the return to a fully operational site by September 2026.

It gives me great pleasure to celebrate a significant sporting achievement. Our Year 10 football team has been crowned Essex Cup Champions, securing a resounding 6-0 victory in Wednesday's final. This marks the first time Roding Valley has won the Essex Cup, a truly remarkable and well-deserved accomplishment. Congratulations to the entire squad, Mr Allen, and all the parents, carers, and family members who have supported our team throughout their journey.

Looking ahead, we have several exciting events on the horizon. Students will be attending West End productions, including "Back to the Future" and "The Great Gatsby". Year 7 students will embark on a residential trip to Claythorpe, while Year 10 students will undertake their Duke of Edinburgh silver expedition.

June will be a particularly busy month as we welcome our new Year 7 cohort for a series of transition events, as well as our prospective Year 12 students for a taster day. The final week of term will see Year 12 students engaging in work experience placements, while Year 10 students will participate in their careers week following their PPE examinations.

Finally, a reminder, students are back in school for their final half term of this academic year on Monday 2nd June.

As always, I am immensely proud of our students' achievements and grateful for the continued support of our school community.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 8 News

Message Miss Burke

As we approach the end of this half term, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your continued support. It has been a hugely positive and rewarding few weeks for our Year 8 students, and your encouragement at home and in school has played a key part in that success.

This half term we’ve celebrated academic progress, personal development, and achievements beyond the classroom. From classroom milestones to sporting triumphs, creative projects, and enriching trips (see photos below of most recent Year 8 theatre trip), Year 8 have truly demonstrated what it means to be resilient, curious and engaged learners. The recent awards and recognitions have highlighted just how much they are growing not just as students, but as individuals.

It’s been especially encouraging to see students supporting one another, stepping out of their comfort zones, and embracing the opportunities made available to them. These are the moments that show us just how bright their futures are, and it’s something we can all be proud of.

As we look ahead, we are mindful that this is the final half term before students make the exciting move into Year 9. It’s a key time for reflection and momentum an opportunity to finish strong and carry forward everything they’ve learned this year. Let’s keep working together to ensure that every student finishes Year 8 feeling proud, confident, and ready for the next stage of their school journey.

I also want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a restful, well-deserved break. I hope the week off provides a chance to recharge. When we return, we’ll be ready to hit the ground running full of energy, enthusiasm, and ready to make the most of the final chapter of Year 8.

Thank you once again for being such an important part of the journey.

Year 9 News

Message from Mr John

I can’t quite believe how quickly this half term has flown by! It feels like only yesterday we were welcoming everyone back after Easter and now we’re already heading into the May half-term break. I want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all our Year 9 students for their continued hard work, positive attitude and engagement over the past few weeks.

One area I’m particularly pleased with is the improvement in detention attendance this half term. While, of course, we would prefer students not to receive detentions in the first place, it’s important to acknowledge the growing sense of responsibility and accountability in attending them when they are set. A reminder: if a detention is issued, it must be attended. Failure to do so will lead to further sanctions. Let's continue working together to minimise the need for detentions altogether by maintaining high standards of behaviour and punctuality.

Looking ahead, the real hard work begins after the break as Year 9 start their GCSE option subjects. This is a major step in your academic journey and your effort and attitude from the start will make a big difference.

Ms. Wills and I have also been incredibly impressed with the significant reduction in lost learning time; more students in class means more learning taking place, which is fantastic to see!

Have a restful half term and come back ready to give your best.

Celebrating Success!

Well done to the following students for their success this half term.

Most Achievement Points: Desire Aluko and Alex Glover

100% Attendance this half term: Uzair Arastu, Zac Crawford-Kite, Joshua Crutchlow, Neve Gardner, Jhael Guarnizo, Jackson Keen, Alex Keller, Themiya Koralage, Conor McLoughlin, Noahm Wainer and Joey Ward

LOST PROPERTY

To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net

We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.

Message from Mr Ryan Year 10 News

After half term we are officially on the final stretch of the year group's 5-year journey. It has been challenging at times but is due to get more difficult.

We now have to start thinking about plans for after GCSEs. If you haven't had the conversation already, it could be good to have one over half term. Has your child said if they have any plans for the future? If so, do they know what their next steps need to be?

Last week in assembly we had a visitor from the 'Big Creative College'. Who spoke to the students at length about T levels and further education options that are not A Levels. In our assembly this week Ms Taylor spoke about the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) which is an option for A-Level students who stay on for 6th Form.

The deadline for 'Take Your Child to Work Day' consent forms is Friday 6th June. If there are any concerns or issues surrounding this, please let me know.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the year 10 boys football team for winning the Essex Cup. 0-6! I'm very pleased about this.

Dear Parent/Carers

Punctuality to school

If your child is late, you must ensure you call the school before 8.30am.

We understand there may be heavy traffic on the road from time to time, please allow enough time to navigate the traffic.

When a child is absent or late for school, this causes disruption to the rest of the class and causes your child to fall behind. Many thanks - Attendance team

Year 11 News

Message from Ms Wills

The Year 11 exams are well under way and we have been incredibly impressed with the attitude the students have shown towards them.

They are now on study leave and so should only be in school for exams.

In the morning they will enter via the normal school gates and head over the bridge or to CA5 for 8:30am. The shack will be open to purchase food from 8:15am and students can use the gym to revise.

In the afternoon students should enter via the Sports Hall gate at 12:30pm. They should not use the main reception as a form of entry.

Students will be dismissed via the Sports Hall gate in both the morning and afternoon. If students are intending to study in H6, if they have a PM Exam, or to attend a revision session with a member of staff they must leave the site and return via Front Reception at 11:00 and sign in so we are aware who is on site.

A reminder of the exam timetable here. The individual exams can be found on Edulink.

There will be half term revision sessions again over half term and the timetable can be found by clicking the following link - May Revision 2025 - Week Overview.pdf

6th Form News

Message from Ms Wheaton & Mrs Curling

Friday 9th May - Goodbye to our Year 13’s who now start study leave!

Tuesday 13th May - Ernst Young (EY)

A fantastic talk on Tuesday 13th May from alumni student: Matthew Tinker.

Matthew left Roding Valley High School 7 years ago and today came back to talk about his role as a Senior Consultant at EY. It was great to hear about all the opportunities and especially good for students to hear his top tips on how to set yourself apart. Matthew absolutely threw himself into opportunities whilst here and is still volunteering. Now a member of the Youth Consultation for Jack Petchey, in his words, “take as many opportunities as you can, you never know what doors it will open.”

We already have a current student in Year 13 who has been successful in her application for a degree apprenticeship at EY!

Thank you for coming back again Matthew and sharing your journey. #Alumni

Latest 6th Form Bulletins: Bulletin No.30 Bulletin No.31

Selected students from year 10 took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge workshop where they were able to work with a coach to help them to develop essential life skills, including:

Confidence in public speaking

Clear and effective communication

The ability to express their thoughts with impact

As part of this experience, students were given the opportunity to present in front of their peers on a topic of their choice. Although it was incredibly difficult to select only a handful of students to progress onto the next round as they were all incredibly insightful, 6 students made it to the next stage where they were tasked with delivering their speeches to the whole of year 7 in assembly.

Only one student could be selected to represent our school in the competition; however, it was inspiring to see all of our students speaking so passionately about their chosen topics in front of their younger peers. A panel of judges from within the school community watched all of these speeches with pride and Max was selected to be our school representative due to his confident and compelling delivery. This was once again clearly visible in the Regional Final of the competition as he represented our school with maturity and grace. His thought provoking speech entitled ‘The Importance of 9 Seconds’ encouraged the audience to consider the ways they utilise their time. Well done Max - you made us all very proud to be a part of the RVHS community.

Well done to the following students for their participation and dedication as they made it through to the assembly stage of the competition: Baz, Cerys, Eve M, Rae and Jaya.

Crash Testing at the Royal Institution

On the 7th May 2025 a number of Year 7 students attended a science educational activity on Crash Testing at The Royal Institution - L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre. They were exposed to how Newton’s Laws apply to when cars are tested for their safety in a crash. Students were given the opportunity to share what makes cars safe, test different structures that are useful in car safety and build their own car for crash testing. The objective was to see if their egg would survive a crash in their model cars

The school are very proud of what the students achieved. They demonstrated and applied teamwork, leadership and application of their scientific skills during the activity. They expressed excellent decorum showing what it means being a student of Roding Valley High School

The Year 7 students enjoyed the activity, especially with the enthusiasm shown by our hosts Zoisa and Jin at the Royal Institution. Ms Thompson and Ms Zaineb ensured the students’ imagination and process in making their cars safe drove them to build their cars. The final part was viewing the end results. For some, it was rather a ‘crushing’ experience. For some, it was an eggcellent eggsperience

Here are a few comments from the students about the day

“I enjoyed experiments…it was a bit boring between the experiments and lunchtime”

”It was really fun because the competition made it very fun…”

”I thought that it was really good we got to test stuff out like making our own cars and seeing how strong they were, weights getting dropped on paper, learning about the safety features in a car”

”I enjoyed the making of the cars and leant about Newton's 1st Law”

”What I liked the most was when we made the cars and when we crashed them”

”I really enjoyed the experiments and the crash testing. I have learnt the three Newton Laws”

”I liked learning about car safety features”

”I enjoyed it because it was fun and exciting. The people there were kind, and cared about out safety. If I were to rate this place it would be a 10/10!!! I learnt that the impact of a crash on cars and about stability of different shapes”

”I enjoyed how it was interactive and that we could do the experiment ourselves and made everything easier to understand ”I thought it was really fun because when we had to build our cars we had to [buy] our materials so you had to use the [money] wisely”

”I really like the trip and like the car crunching and crashing and the weights”

”I enjoyed the trip because it was really fun doing all the experiments and I really liked building our own model car and testing it out”

Year 10 Football Team Trip to Cobham

On Monday 19th May the boys who have been involved in the Year 10 football team this year were rewarded with a trip to Cobham, Chelsea FC's Training ground as a well done for their season and for one last training session before their Essex Cup final.

The boys took part in a two-hour training session on their brilliant 4g astro and then had a tour of the training ground visiting the indoor Arena area where they saw the Under 23's undertaking their gym work, crossed the road to the first team training area to see their training pitches and the entrance the players take to come into training every day and the women's training area.

On leaving the training ground the team were lucky enough to see a couple of first team players arriving for training - Trevor Chalabah and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Congratulations to our Panathlon team for securing 3rd place in the recent secondary competition! The students demonstrated incredible teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the event. Their hard work and positive attitude truly paid off, and we are extremely proud of their fantastic achievement.

Well done to everyone involved!

Year 10 Essex Cup final

On Wednesday 21st May the Year 10 football team travelled to Aveley Football Club to play their Essex County Schools Cup Final v St Marks from Harlow. As a major competition in school football it was set to be a brilliant occasion.

This is a fantastic achievement from the team and is the first time Roding Valley High School have won this age group's Essex Cup in its 115-year existence. Over the whole of the Essex Cup campaign the team only conceded 2 goals.

Goals: Alex D x3, Teddy G, Harry E and Andrei A

Road to the final:

1st Round: 6-1 v Debden Park

2nd Round: 4-1 v Redden Court

3rd Round: 2-0 v St Bonaventures

Quarter Finals: 1-0 v Royal Liberty

Semi Finals: 1-0 v Woodlands

Final: 6-0 v St Marks

A characteristic of the team this year has been the hard work and determination each student has shown to put the team first and this was no different in the final. Roding led 2-0 at half time with Alex Diaconescu scoring 10 minutes in and Harry Elliot adding the teams second 5 minutes before half time. The second half started in a more dominant way by Roding who saw more of the football. This led to a brilliant solo goal from Teddy Gravette as he dribbled around 3 or 4 players to shoot from the edge of the box to make it 3-0. A fourth and fifth goal arrived from Alex Diaconescu to secure a well-deserved hattrick before Andrei Artenie added a 6th later in the game.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
