Message from the Headteacher

Dear Roding Valley High School Community

As we reach the end of another successful academic year, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the wonderful events and achievements that have taken place across our school community in recent weeks. Almost two years into my time at Roding, I see the immense potential of the school and each student who walks through our doors. Over the next few years we are incredibly excited about the changes that we will make to further improve our fabulous school and maintain our status as the school of choice in the area.

Behind the scenes we have launched an Export Teaching Task Force to further refine our pedagogy, and ensure that we are at the forefront of educational research so that each and every student experiences the highest quality lessons. Our focus is currently on identifying the components of expert teaching in our unique context, and what we feel are the priorities to develop practice over the next few years. We believe that the work we are doing in this area will be transformative for our staff and students alike.

In other news, our Year 11 leavers assembly and prom provided a fitting celebration for our students who have worked so diligently throughout their GCSE and vocational examinations this summer. It was truly a fantastic day, witnessing so many brilliant students celebrating their achievements and the completion of this important milestone in their educational journey. The atmosphere was one of pride and accomplishment, reflecting the hard work and dedication these students have demonstrated throughout their time with us.

Following this celebration, we welcomed 170 students to our Year 12 taster day, which offered prospective sixth form students a comprehensive sample of what life in our sixth form entails. The day included a lovely barbecue, an informative careers fair, and some fantastic lessons that showcased the quality of teaching and learning opportunities available to our students. This event continues to be an excellent way for students to experience our sixth form environment and make informed decisions about their future educational pathway.

Throughout this week, we have had the pleasure of welcoming our incoming Year 6 students who will be joining us in September. These students have been participating in baseline assessments, attending our transition evening, and experiencing their transition day. What a fantastic cohort they are, and we are genuinely excited about the energy and enthusiasm they will bring to our school community. We look forward to welcoming approximately 200 of these students to our summer school programme in the coming weeks, which will provide them with additional opportunities to familiarise themselves with our school environment and expectations and make new friends.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the many parents and carers who have engaged with and contributed valuable ideas to the Roding Valley Foundation. Your involvement and support are instrumental in helping us enhance our school facilities and resources. I encourage all members of our community to sign up to the parent lottery, which will help us raise essential funds for three significant items that will benefit our entire school community: a new piano for the main hall, new curtains for the hall, and a multi gym for the playground. These additions will enhance both our performance spaces and recreational facilities, providing improved opportunities for all our students.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement with our school community.

Year 7 News

Message from Miss Aston

We are now strongly into the Summer Term. As we approach the end of the Academic Year in 3 weeks, please could I ask that Year 7's maintain a positive attitude towards their learning.

Please can I ask that Year 7's remain consistent every day. Unfortunately, some Year 7's are showing signs of summer-term restlessness - chatting during lessons, and pushing boundaries. As well as this, please can I ask that all students have the correct footwear (no trainers). I have started to see these creeping up, and we must be in the correct footwear.

Last week myself and a number of staff across the school took out 80 Year 7 students to PGL. This was a fantastic trip, and the Year 7's were spoken very highly of. The instructors said it was great how polite, and how involved the Year 7's got. We took part in many exciting activities such as canoeing, climbing, and leap of faith. It was so great to see how all of the Year 7's got stuck in from the get-go, I also managed to take part in the activities too!

Year 7's will also see their first Sports Day at RVHS happening next week. It was great to see how many Year 7's have already signed up for so many events across the day. This is a great way to show off our individual and team spirits, and get as many points as we can to be the winning House on the day!

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 8 News

Message Miss Burke

The last few weeks in Year 8 have been brilliant full of energy, enthusiasm, and excellent engagement from all students.

A real highlight was one of our Year 8 forms taking the lead to direct, rehearse, and perform their own assembly on the topic of anti-discrimination. It was absolutely fantastic. Impressively, they didn’t just perform for their own year group, but also delivered it to both Year 7 and Year 9 a huge achievement that took confidence, teamwork, and real commitment.

We also had a number of Year 8 students represent us at the District Sports Day, they were all incredible showing determination, sportsmanship, and pride in their efforts.

This week, we also took a group of students to Zip World ArcelorMittal Orbit, where they had the exciting opportunity to slide down the world’s longest tunnel slide! This reward trip was for students who have achieved 100% attendance or made fantastic academic progress. We’re planning to run more of these trips in future as a way to celebrate and reward those who consistently make positive choices and uphold our school values.

With just three weeks to go until the summer break, I’m looking forward to ending the year on a high, keeping the momentum going with positivity and energy.

Thank you for your continued support at home it really does make a difference.

Year 9 News

Message from Ms Wills

Year 9 are now fully into their GCSE courses and I have been pleased with the feedback that we have received in regards to their focus and attitude to learning. In order to support each student with their progress and achievement, tutors will be having learning conversations with their tutees to discuss successes and set targets. These will be shared with you.

If you do have any questions then please feel free to contact your child’s tutor directly.

We have lots of exciting things to look forward to as we approach the end of term, including sports day, which I hope will be a wonderful day for Year 9 students as they take part and cheer on their friends in support of their house.

This week a group went to watch the Mousetrap and next in a few weeks there will be a Year 9 charity football match, which students can sign up to.

It is also important to share successes of our students both in and out of school. Congratulations to Madison Betts on winning a kick boxing belt for his team. He has been training 7 days a week and so this is a great achievement.

We are also allowing students to sit any exams they may have missed. All they need to do is speak to me and we can arrange for them to sit the exam.

Monday all Year 10’s are in school for Business Enterprise Day. Students are expected to be in school at the usual time in full uniform.

Tuesday is our Mock Interview Day. Students who have submitted their CVs will be allocated an appointment with an external agency who will come in to school and give them the experience of an interview. Students are expected in school at the usual time in school uniform.

Wednesday is the Sixth Form or College taster day. Information about this has been sent to you via email.

Thursday is Take your Child to Work Day.

If there are any issues around this, please do let me know.

Punctuality to school

Dear Parent/Carers

If your child is late, you must ensure you call the school before 8.30am.

We understand there may be heavy traffic on the road from time to time, please allow enough time to navigate the traffic.

When a child is absent or late for school, this causes disruption to the rest of the class and causes your child to fall behind. Many thanks - Attendance Team

Latest 6th Form Bulletins: Bulletin No.34 Bulletin No.35

On Friday 13th June, our GCSE Drama students in Years 9 and 10 were privileged to meet and work with Kerry Frampton. Kerry is the artistic director of Splendid, a highly acclaimed theatre company, known for their engaging and interactive adaptations of classic texts. Kerry's productions at London's Globe Theatre, Rough Magic and Midsummer Mechanicals, have seen her twice nominated for an Olivier Award. Kerry ran two workshops. Year 9 experienced some exciting approaches to physical theatre, learning new skills that they will be able to utilise in the rest of their course; while Year 10 learned about Kerry's own approach to devising theatre, supporting them with their first practical exam unit, which begins after their PPEs. More used to working with under graduates, Kerry was very impressed with the maturity and skill of our learners, and was delighted to see how our Year 10 cohort had developed since she worked with them last year.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
