Message from the Headteacher

Dear Roding Valley High School Community

I hope this letter finds you well. As a school we are always looking at ways to protect our community from the dangers and risks presented by modern technology, particularly mobile phones.

Our current mobile phone policy has been in place for a number of years and has worked well for the school community. However, new apps such as Ten Ten, which turns mobile phones into walkie-talkies, have presented us with new challenges as lessons have been disrupted and learning time lost.

In addition, some pupils continue to be tempted to check their phones for messages throughout the school day, increasing the risk that phones will distract pupils from their work or use them inappropriately.

We understand that for safety reasons some parents want their children to carry a mobile phone with them to and from school, particularly if they travel on public transport, but there is no reason why mobile phones should be switched on whilst in the school building. In our policy it states that mobile phones should be switched off once students enter the school premises and they should not be switched back on until students leave the school. This will mean that:

• Pupils must carry a paper timetable with them at all times so that they do not need to check Edulink (these have been and will continue to be provided by the school)

• Pupils must top-up their food account in the morning before they leave the house as they will not be able to do it school;

• If pupils need to contact family or carers then they will need to speak with their form tutor, head of year or student reception.

If mobile phones are seen or heard at any time on the school premises they will be confiscated. For first offences, pupils will be able to collect their phone at the end of the day.

For second and subsequent offences, parents will be required to collect mobile phones at the end of the day and they will not be handed back to pupils.

Pupils who refuse to hand over their mobile phones will be sanctioned as per the behaviour policy. Please speak with your child about this and ensure that they understand the rules and the consequences. We will also make this clear at school.

The Dangers of Social Media

As we continue to navigate the challenges of our modern digital world, we find it increasingly important to address the potential risks posed by social media platforms, particularly for our students. The rise of apps like TikTok, Snapchat, and other popular social media outlets has created new ways for our young people to connect, share, and express themselves. While these platforms offer many opportunities for creativity and communication, they also present significant challenges and dangers that deserve our attention.

1. Cyberbullying: One of the most concerning issues related to social media is cyberbullying. Many students experience harassment, bullying, or exclusion online, and this can have a lasting emotional and psychological impact. The anonymous nature of these platforms often emboldens users to engage in harmful behaviour.

2. Mental Health Impacts: Research has shown that excessive social media use can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. The constant comparison to others, pressure to maintain a perfect image, and the addictive nature of scrolling through content can lead to unhealthy habits and low selfesteem, especially among teens.

3. Exposure to Inappropriate Content: Although social media platforms have content moderation in place, there is always the risk of students encountering inappropriate, harmful, or misleading material. From explicit content to dangerous challenges and misinformation, students may come across harmful influences that they may not be equipped to handle.

4. Privacy and Security Risks: Many students may not fully understand the privacy implications of their online behaviour. Sharing personal information, location data, or even seemingly harmless posts can put students at risk of identity theft, online predators, or unwanted attention. Furthermore, once something is shared online, it can be difficult to remove, leading to long-term consequences.

5. Addiction and Time Management Issues: Social media is designed to capture attention, and many students struggle with managing the time they spend on these platforms. Excessive screen time can interfere with homework, sleep, extracurricular activities, and face-to-face social interactions, potentially affecting academic performance and overall well-being.

How We Can Protect Our Students

We recognise that for some students, social media is an integral part of their lives, and it’s unlikely that these platforms will disappear anytime soon or that there will be a change in legislation. However, it is essential that we work together to ensure our students can navigate these spaces safely and responsibly. As parents and educators, we can take the following steps to help protect and guide our students:

1. Open Communication: Encourage your child to talk to you about their experiences on social media. If they feel uncomfortable or encounter bullying or inappropriate content, make sure they know they can come to you for support without fear of punishment.

2. Set Boundaries and Guidelines: Establish clear rules around social media use, including time limits and appropriate content. Discuss the importance of maintaining privacy, and help them understand what constitutes safe online behaviour.

3. Monitor Social Media Activity: While respecting your child’s privacy, plan regular check-ins on the apps they use. This could include following their social media accounts or using parental control software to monitor their activity. This will vary depending on the age of your child, but we would strongly encourage parents of students in Key Stage 3 (years 7-9) to monitor their child’s phone and social media usage very closely.

4. Promote Offline Activities: Encourage your child to balance their online and offline lives by participating in extracurricular activities, spending time with family, and pursuing hobbies that don’t involve screens.

5. Educate on Digital Literacy: Teach your child how to critically evaluate the content they see online. Help them understand that not everything on social media is real or accurate and that they should think before sharing personal information or posting online.

6. Purchase a ‘dumb’ phone for your child. Calls to put age restrictions on smartphones by those who believe they are harmful to children has led to a rise in interest in 'dumb' phones – basic handsets that allow kids to contact you in emergencies without becoming a distraction. If safety- and being able to contact your child- is the main reason why you want them to have a phone, consider one of these handsets as an alternative option. Here is the Which? Guide to the buying the best phone for your child https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/mobile-phones/article/buying-a-first-mobile-phone-best-dumb-phonesand-smartphones-for-kids-aA03C3Y8aTzr

According to recent research, the main reason for parents giving children mobile phones was for safety purposes, enabling parents to stay in touch and track their children’s locations with nearly 80% of those surveyed believing that it moderately or significantly helped to keep their child safe. However, this does not correlate with the known risks of mobile phone ownership such as the child’s exposure to online dangers including inappropriate content and online bullying. As a school, we do not have the necessary tools and resources to be able to satisfactorily investigate the ever-increasing number of mobile phone, social media and online related incidents that are being reported to us which occur outside of school. Therefore, it is vital that as parents and carers you maintain oversight of your child’s phone usage, and act as a gatekeeper for this. Many incidents begin outside of school, whilst students are at home, and are then brought into school as students challenge each other regarding their online content. This can be significantly reduced if all parents, carers and teachers work together to help protect their children.

We are committed to helping our students develop into responsible, resilient, and safe digital citizens. By working together, we can help them navigate the challenges of social media while also enjoying the many benefits these platforms can offer.

If you have any concerns or would like to discuss this matter further, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to support both you and your child in making informed choices about their online activities.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter, and for your ongoing support of our school community.

As a direct impact of the National Insurance increases, the increase to the National Living Wage and the cost of inflation, there will be a price increase on all school meals from 22nd April 2025. For example, our Main Meal will be £1.95 (currently £1.85). Further information will be available on our Website in due course.

If you are experiencing financial difficulty, you can check your Free School Meals eligibility here, alternatively, please contact the school.

Year 7 News

Message from Miss Aston

Please could we have a huge push on ensuring that our uniform is worn correctly in line with the school policy, and that we are not wearing trainers.

In addition, I want to highlight that students should not be leaving lessons for toilet breaks unless they have a medical pass. Teachers are aware of students who have been granted such passes, and we ask for your support in reinforcing this expectation at home.

The entire Year 7 Cohort had the really exciting opportunity to watch the Fusion Production last week which was delivered by students from a range of year groups. The students that performed really went out of their comfort zone to celebrate their home culture. The Year 7's were very respectful and engaged throughout - it was a delight to see!

A huge well done and congratulations to the Year 7 Rugby Team who won the District Final, and annihilated St Marks 30-0:

Lucas Tapply-O’Connor, Joshua Yoka, Henry Smith, Yussuf El Haji, Stefan Kalai, Munir Zeqja, Jacob Simpson, Miles Caruana, Tate Gurrieri, Ismail Ramadan, Gruff Collischon, Mason Sayer, Tristan Knoops, Ralph Poett, Joel Smith.

Please can I ask that Year 7's remain extra vigilant and safe online. Your continued support at home does not go unnoticed. It has been great to see how well Year 7's have been doing over the last few weeks. Their hard work does not go unnoticed. Please can we continue to drive and instil this every day.

I would like to take this time to wish everyone a fantastic Easter Holiday.

Year 8 News

Message from Miss Burke

As we approach the end of the term, it's important that we continue to maintain the high standards we’ve set. Our students have been exceptional this term, and it’s vital that we keep up the momentum. A huge congratulations to all the students who have represented the school in recent sports events, including netball, handball, and football. It's always a proud moment to see our students showcase not only their talent but also their role as positive role models.

I am also thrilled to announce the launch of the 2026 Ski Trip for Year 8. This is an incredible opportunity for our students to experience something truly special, and it’s a chance for them to take pride in the many exciting opportunities available to them. For more details about the trip, please refer to the letter that was sent out to all parents, where you’ll find additional information about what the trip entails.

As we continue on our journey together, it’s important to focus on our students’ success, drive, and motivation to reach their goals beyond school. Having open conversations with students about their aspirations ensures we can guide and support them in achieving their full potential. By motivating them and making sure they feel heard, we are fostering an environment where they can thrive and take pride in their growth both academically and personally.

Year 9 News

Message from Miss Reed

It is crazy to think we are approaching the end of the Spring term and Year 9 will soon be starting their GCSE option subjects. A reminder that this will begin after the May half term. Students and parent/carer’s will receive their confirmed options the week after the Easter break.

I trust that parents received their son/daughters school report on Thursday providing an

update on their progress and attitude across all subject areas. If you have any subject queries, please do get in touch with the class teacher who will be able to provide you with more information. All teacher emails are available on the school website here.

Fusion: On Friday the languages department held an exciting event called 'Fusion' where students across the school perform different acts based on their culture and religion. This is becoming a regular event in our calendar and I would like to congratulate all the students from Year 9 who were involved in this event.

Y9 Netball Success: I would like to congratulate our Y9 Netball team who competed in the final Netball festival of the season last week leading to us winning the local District overall finishing top of the league. We now go on to play our final match against the winner of the Harlow League in a bid to become Borough champions. Well done to the following students who are part of this team: Sienna, Tyleah, Hetti, Eloise, Isabella, Evie, Eliza, Ruby-Rae and Sophie. Wishing them the best of luck for next week.

In the final week of term, we will be holding our Easter Celebration assembly where we will congratulate students across the board including subject awards, form tutor awards, house point awards and attendance. There are prizes on offer for those winners! I look forward to sharing our winners with you in the next bulletin.

Leading up to the final week, can I please remind parents and students of our uniform expectations where blazers still need to be brought into school and worn. If students are required to wear trainers, a letter or email must be received.

I thank you for your continued support with Year 9. Wishing everyone a lovely Easter.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 10 News

Message from Mr Ryan

We have just a week left of this term and then we have completed another term! In just over a year's time the year group will be getting ready for the start of their exams. I have mentioned the PLCs before (Personalised Learning Checks) these sheets should be in every one of your child's exercise books for each subject. These are essential revision guides and will tell you exactly what units have been covered and what is to come.

A letter went out last week about careers week. We will be giving each child a consent form to be completed for 'Take Your Child to Work Day'. If there are any concerns about this please let me know.

Next week I get to celebrate the year groups successes and I can't wait to hand out all the certificates. It really is lovely to see how well the students are doing and what their teachers have noticed over the term. Well done to everyone!

As always, if you have any concerns or questions please contact your son/daughter’s form tutor in the first instance.

Dear Parent/Carers

Punctuality to school

If your child is late, you must ensure you call the school before 8.30am.

We understand there may be heavy traffic on the road from time to time, please allow enough time to navigate the traffic.

When a child is absent or late for school, this causes disruption to the rest of the class and causes your child to fall behind.

Many thanks - Attendance team

Tuesday 18th March – Price Forbes

It was our pleasure to welcome back Lauren this week. How often do you hear, “give me your CV and I will hand it in to HR for you?” Well that's what our amazing alumni student Lauren offered our Year 13 students at Roding Valley High School when she came to deliver an employer talk. Only two years gone and she has returned twice to support her peers into apprenticeships. Thank you, Lauren, for all your support. We are very proud of all that you have achieved!

Thursday 20th March – Year 13 Mock Results Day

There was a real buzz of excitement at our mock results day last week. There were many happy faces around the room. Not everyone was pleased and we shared a number of key messages with the group to ensure they’re using the remaining weeks wisely. For those holding UCAS offers, now is the time for them to use their final predictions to make their firm and insurance choices.

Wednesday 19th March – Investment 20/20 –What to expect when applying

Another fantastic workshop offered to Roding Valley students from Investment2020. This was workshop number 4 and so important for students to make successful applications for employment. This week was all about how to ace your application and psychometric tests. Not only students but staff learnt so much. Thank you, Investment 20/20, for your continued support for Roding Valley students.

Latest 6th Form Bulletins: Bulletin No.24 Bulletin No.25

The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge workshop took place last week and 30 year 10 students were selected to take part. The workshop is designed to be fun and engaging for students to help them to develop essential life skills, including:

Confidence in public speaking

Clear and effective communication

The ability to express their thoughts with impact

By taking part, students were given the opportunity to represent our school and build valuable skills that will serve them well in both their academic journey and beyond. We heard many inspiring and thoughtprovoking speeches on the day and now 8 of these students will be delivering their speeches in an assembly to compete to be our school representative where they will hopefully progress onto the final stages of the competition. Well done year 10 - you made the school and yourselves proud!

Based on student feedback, 93% of students that took part felt that they had learnt new skills that they can now apply in the next stage of their education. 100% of the students felt that they had improved in regards to their presentation skills as they were given the opportunity to consider the impact of content, structure and their delivery when speaking. 97% of students believed that the workshop helped them to realise that they can succeed at new things and that their ability to stay focussed and think clearly under pressure had improved because of this.

This amazing poem was written by Beth Diamond-Conway, Year 10, it has been published on RSBC website.

Disabilities are special. They give us superpowers. It doesn’t mean we can fly or grow marshmallow flowers. It means we are unique. It means we are wonderful. The haters don’t understand that disabilities are very beautiful.

Disabilities don’t make us mean. Disabilities don’t make us cruel. The haters may not know it, but in our own way we are cool. Everyone is different. Everyone is fun. And if you are disabled out there, you’re not the only one.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
