I am delighted to share with you some of the exceptional achievements and exciting developments taking place at Roding Valley High School.
Our recent photography competition showcased the remarkable talent of our students, with Amelia securing first place, Bailey achieving second place, and Harshita earning third place. These outstanding results demonstrate the creative abilities of our students and their commitment to developing their artistic skills.
The Drama Department has also been producing exceptional work through their practical projects. Some truly amazing pieces have been created, and I am particularly pleased that several of these are now proudly displayed in the Headteacher's Area, where they can be viewed by both staff and visitors to the school. This provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the high standards of work our students consistently achieve.
I would like to update you on an important development regarding our parent community support. In the last year, we successfully relaunched the PTA under the new name of the Roding Valley Foundation. The foundation has already organised several successful fundraising events, including a quiz night, silent disco, and wine and cheese evenings. Now that the foundation is well established, they have set an ambitious target to raise money for three significant items that will benefit our school community: a new piano for the main hall, new curtains for the hall, and a multi gym for the playground.
To achieve this goal, the foundation is launching a Parents Lottery. You can purchase tickets for £1, giving you the opportunity to win a weekly jackpot of £25,000. All proceeds go directly back into the PTA fund, supporting improvements to our school facilities. I encourage you to support this initiative by purchasing your tickets via the Parents Lottery link. Please keep an eye out for the next foundation event in October, which will be an outdoor cinema. Further details can be found on the RVHS Foundation website.
The coming weeks will be particularly busy with several important events. Next week features our Year 11 leavers assembly and prom. The following week includes our Year 11-12 transition day and our comprehensive Year 6-7 transition week.
This transition week incorporates baseline testing, a transition evening with parents, and a full transition day at school featuring lessons, fun activities, and opportunities for new students to make friends and meet their teachers while experiencing secondary school life.
The week commencing 30th June will be Year 10 careers week, incorporating business enterprise day, mock interview day, college visits, A-level taster sessions, and ‘bring your child to work’ day. Year 13 will celebrate their leavers assembly and prom on Thursday 3 July, followed by Sports Day on Friday 4th July. Sports Day promises to be an amazing day where all staff and students will participate. We will also hold Sports Awards and KS3 Showcase, with further details to be shared in due course.
As always, thank you for your continued support.

We are now into the Final Term of being in Year 7 at Roding Valley High School! It has been wonderful to see such positive behaviour from the Year 7 cohort, whilst students have been demonstrating maturity, curiosity, and a strong respect for routines since our return from the half term break.
As we approach the next 5 weeks, please could I ask that Year 7's show a strong resilience in and out of lessons, and continue to have excellent Attendance in school every day.
We have many exciting upcoming events throughout the Summer Term, such as our Year 7 Residential happening next week to PGL, where students will take part in many exciting activities such as Archery, Laser Tag, and the Giant Swing.
This week saw the first of the Super Curricular Lectures, where various KS3 and KS4 students were selected to receive lectures on many exciting topics. The Year 7's have been giving some amazing feedback on this, which has been fantastic!

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
We’re now into the final half term of the academic year just five weeks to go until our Year 8 students head off for a well-earned summer break and return to us as Year 9's in September.
We’ve kicked off this half term with great energy, and the next few weeks are set to be packed with exciting activities. Sports Day sign-ups are now live, and letters have gone out for our 100% attendance reward trip to ZipWorld a well-deserved treat for those students who have shown outstanding commitment this year. Additionally, our super-curricular lecture series has begun, taking place during morning form time for selected students, giving them an extra boost of challenge and enrichment.
As always, expectations for Year 8 remain high, and your support at home continues to make a huge difference. Maintaining a strong partnership helps keep motivation high, encourages a positive attitude to learning, and supports the excellent behaviour we strive for across the year group.
Thank you for your continued support as we make these final weeks as successful and enjoyable as possible!
Any parents/carers wishing to purchase some RVHS preloved uniform, please use this link to select & pay for any uniform you wish to purchase.
The process is quick and easy to use. You will be notified once your order is ready for your collection. All orders will be processed during term time only
Do you have any old uniform your child has outgrown or no longer uses?
Please wash and donate back to our pre-loved uniform. A box will be in reception for students to drop off.
We are two weeks into the start of the GCSE journey and I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the year group on the excellent start they have made to their subjects In the last week they were the cohort with the most improved attendance, most achievement points and least behaviour points. Well done Year 9!
Last week I welcomed the year group to what is in effect the start of Year 10 and asked them to focus on where they see themselves in 2 years’ time. With this goal in mind it is important to remind students about getting the small things right. Please support us in our drive for high standards of all students. This means being in school on time, in every lesson and in the correct uniform. Each morning tutors will be completing an equipment check to ensure all students are well prepared for their lessons and also in full uniform. We will also begin weekly learning conversations where your child will meet with their tutor to discuss their progress and set some targets for the coming school year.
I would like to thank Mr John for all his help in supporting the year group in the last half term whilst I was still working with Year 11. He will now be working with our incoming Year 7 students, so please now direct any concerns to either your child’s tutor or myself.

Key Dates:
I would like to remind you of two busy days in careers week.
Wednesday 2nd July - 6th form and College taster day Thursday 3rd July - Take Your Child to Work Day
Shout out from Miss Haque!
Congratulations to Manol Dimov, who has secured an exciting work experience placement with Lloyds Banking Group. After approaching me for guidance, Manol was supported through the process and connected with this valuable opportunity through a professional contact. He’s a perfect example of “if you don’t ask, you don’t get” - showing how taking initiative and seeking support can open doors.
I am proud of his drive and look forward to hearing about his experience in the finance sector. Well Done Manol! - Miss Haque
Dear Parent/Carers
If your child is late, you must ensure you call the school before 8.30am.
We understand there may be heavy traffic on the road from time to time, please allow enough time to navigate the traffic.
When a child is absent or late for school, this causes disruption to the rest of the class and causes your child to fall behind. Many thanks - Attendance team
We are now coming into the final few days of the exams and I am pleased with the way that the Year 11 cohort have conducted themselves. I hope that their efforts will be rewarded in the summer on results day I personally want to thank you all for the support you have shown over the past two years. It has been a pleasure to work with the year group and although the time has flown by I have grown very fond of the students. Below is a reminder of the leaver’s events taking place on Thursday 19th June
• Students should arrive at the Sports Hall entrance at 9:30am in school uniform - shirt, tie, trousers/skirt and black shoes. They do not need to wear their blazer, but all other uniform expectations remain as normal, notably skirts of the appropriate length. They can wear their leavers hoodie if they have purchased one from Forest Casuals. Please discuss this with your child before the day so that they are fully aware of our expectations, and to avoid any unnecessary conversations on the day that may detract from the celebratory atmosphere.
• The rest of the school will be on site as usual, therefore to avoid disruption to their day the event will start promptly at 9.30am and the gates will remain open until 9:45am only. Any student who arrives after 9:45am will not be able to join the assembly. Please also inform your child that there will be the customary opportunity for photos and signing of shirts before assembly starts at 10am
• Please do not bring bags to school as there will be no ‘base’ for the duration of the morning.
• Pre-purchased yearbooks will be available for collection following the assembly.
• Students will leave school at approximately 10:45am
• Several students have already very kindly informed us that they plan to bring cards and small gifts for their teachers on the day. Please note we will have a table at the back of the Main Hall for this. If you would like to leave something for a member of staff, please ensure it is clearly labelled and we will ensure it gets to the right person! As the school day will be running as normal, goodbyes and thank yous in person will happen at the Prom.
• We have been in close communication with the local policing team who are keen for us to remind students not to congregate in large groups as they leave the school site.
• Our behaviour expectations remain high for students on this day, we do not want any unacceptable behaviour to risk a student's attendance to the Prom later in the evening- best behaviour please!
Year 11 Prom (ticket only event):
• Students will be given a prom ticket at the end of the leaver’s assembly.
• Students should arrive at Woolston Manor from 6:45pm, the venue will be open from 7.00pm.
• Carmel Jane Photographers will be there at the beginning to take professional photos which will be available for purchase following the event.
• In line with the security and safety expectations of the venue, all students will be searched on arrival
• Once inside the venue, students must remain inside- a strict no re-entry policy is operated by the venue.
• Please ensure you inform us of any special dietary requirements or allergies ASAP so we can coordinate with the venue.
• Departure will be from 10:30-10:45pm - please ensure that travel arrangements are organised for your child’s journey home. In the past it has been very difficult for local taxi companies to pick up any last-minute bookings, so please ensure this is pre-arranged if you are not collecting them personally.
We look forward to a wonderful day to celebrate the hard work students have put in over their 5 years at Roding Valley.
It gives us great pleasure to announce our new student executive.
We had a very competitive field of applicants for the role of head prefect. We are proud of each one of our year 12’s who put themselves forward and showed us what an incredibly talented cohort they are.
We appointed Anthony Dean and Amy Fjerce to the role of Head Prefect. Charlotte Palmer, Lucie Marks and Ellie Babbs take on the role of senior prefect. We wish all five of them the very best of luck for their term in office, leading our student body.
Our very own Samuel Caffall had the incredible opportunity of representing British Airways at the Sustainable Skies World Summit on the 15th May. He said, “It was a captivating event, hearing from talented leaders in the industry what they are doing to work towards ‘Net Zero Aviation’. Whilst I was there, I also promoted BA’s Emerging Talent Schemes and hilariously helped students put on some life jackets!”
Well done Samuel, we are proud of you.
Year 12 EPQ students attended a Research Matters workshop on Thursday 22nd May. It was a very interesting and informative afternoon. We were also able to see the Magna Carta to original Beatles song compositions. We have since had an email from the British Library complimenting out students.
Thursday 5th June – Beyond 18 Day
Our Beyond 18 day on Thursday 5th June was a huge success - We had a range of external speakers, as well as member of our sixth form team delivering sessions on topics including UCAS, interview techniques, personal statement writing, apprenticeships and one of the favourites was our ‘cooking on a budget session’.
Thank you to all staff involved in this; it takes a huge amount of time to organise a full day off timetable and we really value staff contributions and parents’ support for the importance of the day.
It was a great pleasure to see the students receive their PPE2 results on the last day our mock results day. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the hall with students really engaging in the process. The message given was hem to reflect on how they felt receiving these results and to think what needed to be done in

On the 21st May 2025 a number of Year 10 students attended a science educational trip to The Royal Institution - L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre on Forensics. They were exposed to how genes and using advanced genetic techniques aid the police and other forces to identify victims and offenders.
We are very proud of what the students achieved. They demonstrated and applied teamwork, leadership and application of their scientific skills during the activity. The final part was viewing the end results. For some, it was illuminating, especially when more evidence came to light.
The Year 10 students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and appreciated the enthusiasm shown by our host Amy at the Royal Institution. Thanks to Ms Thompson and Ms K who ensured the students’ showed imagination and process in using and applying the techniques during the activity. The student’s behaviour and attitude were excellent, showing what it means being a student of Roding Valley High School.
The Y7 Hub group manage to raise a fantastic £264 for YoungMinds
a charity that gives young people the tools to look after their mental health.
All the students worked so hard and were so enthusiastic. They learnt that helping others can be very rewarding. They had lots of fun too!
If you are on Instagram please do following the Roding Valley account. Here you will find a variety of information regarding key educational topics and will see the wonderful opportunities we offer here at school and ways parents/carers can support us in the home.
Congratulations to the following students for their fantastic work in Literacy and during Drop Everything and Write (DEAW)

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
