It has been another warm, exciting and busy week here at Roding Valley High School. The summer concert was on Tuesday night, thank you to Mr Savage and Mr Clancy for organising. The standard of performance was excellent and the students who participated were a real credit to the school. Thank you to all the parents who attended the Parents’ Forum on Monday, the information about Show My Homework and ConnectEd was well received. Last night was the transition evening for parents of Year 6 students who will be joining us in September. Another very well attended evening where parents were given a lot of information about the school. It was a very positive evening and the parents were able to meet with key staff including Miss Williams who will be the Year 7 Progress Leader. Our younger guests saw some great experiments in the Science Department. A special thanks to the PTA who put on a BBQ and provided burgers and drinks for everyone. I would also like to commend Jeevan Jutla and Leya Hines, both Year 7 students, who gave confident speeches on transition way beyond their years. Eva Randall gave an excellent performance on the piano. Today was Sports Day for the whole school and students enjoyed the events put on by the PE department. It was a great success and many personal bests set. It was the first time that we have had a whole school Sports Day for a number of years and it was well received by students and staff. It was brilliant to have the whole school out on the field for the afternoon, a real community event. Next year we can build on the success. Please follow the PE department on twitter for latest sporting updates @RodingValleyPE. Another success today came from a group of Year 7 students who attended a TT Rockstar competition, a national maths challenge. I hear that we did really well and can report full results next week. Next week is yet another very busy week in school, some of our Year 8 students will be off on their residential trip. Much of our fundraising this year has culminated in a group of sixth formers departing for Zambia and their visit to our sister school Greater Joy. This is an amazing opportunity for those going but also the wider community as we reach out to a less fortunate community than ourselves. I will follow their trip with keen interest. Our Year 10 geographers will be heading out for fieldwork trips and some Year 8s will be heading off to Queen Mary University on Wednesday for a STEM trip. Also on Wednesday is the District Athletics events and the final Year6 testing day. We have a Maths and Science Drop Down Day for Y7 students on Monday The drop down day will be based on espionage, which was a vital part of the Second World War efforts. Students will be practicing how to decode various ciphers with the aim to increase participation in the next National Cipher Challenge. Skills to develop include identifying patterns and statistical techniques to assist in deciphering coded messages. There will be a competitive element with the teams competing against each other with speed and accuracy of decoding the messages. The students will also be learning how to communicate in Morse code, build and use a periscope and create messages in invisible ink. Year 10 students will be having mock interviews all day on Thursday and on the same evening we have our Independent Research Project Celebration event in the hall where students’ work will be on display. This event starts at 6pm. Cont/d….
