‘Yellow caps’ to replace illegal car guards at JBay A new breed of car guard will be out and about on the streets of Jeffreys Bay this Festive Season.

others had been submitted for vetting. “If they receive security clearance, they will be trained by local security companies and registered with PSIRA. In the meantime, they are being monitored closely so as to ensure they are sober and presentable. If any of them step out of line, they know they will lose their caps immediately,” she said. The Kouga Council would like to encourage residents and visitors to refrain from tipping car guards who are not wearing the official yellow cap. “Let us support those who are making an effort to be presentable, polite and properly qualified to look after vehicles,” she concluded.

With their bright yellow caps, the 22 men and three women are Jeffreys Bay’s first official parking attendants under an initiative by the Kouga Council to clamp down on illegal car guards in the popular holiday town. “Car guards have been getting out of hand in Jeffreys Bay,” said Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen. “Shortly after the election, we promised residents that we would clamp down on illegal car guards. We are proud of the progress that has been made.” The project is being run by the Council in conjunction with the Jeffreys Bay SAPS and local security companies. The caps, emblazoned with the words “J-Bay Car Guard”, were sponsored by Smhart Security. The Mayor said four of the parking attendants had already been registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) while the fingerprints of the

THE Kouga Council approved the immediate imposition of water restrictions across the Kouga region on Firday. Punitive tariffs are to be implemented from January 1, 2017. According to Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen, the following activities are prohibited under the restrictions. ) The use of hosepipes, sprinklers and drip systems ) The watering of gardens, lawns and grassed areas. ) The washing of paved areas, walls, roofs, buildings and similar structures, vehicles or other equipment ) The filling of swimming pools, paddling pools, fountains and ponds

Kouga Municipality receives the bulk of its water for domestic usage from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. The decision to impose water restrictions and punitive tariffs follows on a mandate received by Kouga from the Nelson Mandela Metro that water usage needs to be cut back by 15%. Affected towns include Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis, Oyster Bay, Patensie, Hankey, Loerie and Thornhill.

Visit the Storms River Rest Camp THE Storms River Rest Camp in the Garden Route National Park is open for business as usual after a fire flattened the Park restaurant operated by Tourvest (Cattle Baron) and nearby shop within minutes last month. The site is cordoned off and no members of the public are allowed to access the site. It is also under supervision by the Park’s rangers and Honorary Rangers. Water and electricity was unaffected and is available in the camp. The temporary restaurant and shop are up and running and all day activities as well. All day activities in the Storms River Rest Camp are up and running including the re-

routed walk to the popular suspension bridge, water activities, day hikes, day trips to the River gorge and others. “It is important to accommodate both day and overnight visitors. Last year alone some 256 571 day visitors visited the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park (old Tsitsikamma National Park). The Park’s plan to control traffic during season will includes additional staff, assistance from Honorary Rangers and security guards. Obey the by-laws for a happy holiday KOUGA Municipality would like to call on all residents and visitors to respect the by-laws that have been put in place to keep everyone safe this festive season. Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said additional traffic officers have been contracted to assist with road safety operations. “There will be a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to drinking and driving, driving recklessly, driving without licences, speeding, overloading and unroadworthy vehicles,” she warned. She said there would also be extra law en-

forcement officers and security guards who will conduct patrols of beaches, canals and rivers to ensure compliance with by-laws. Here are some of the rules that need to be observed: ) People walking their dogs must ensure that the animals are on leashes to protect other people and the dogs. ) Dog droppings must be collected by the person walking with the dog immediately once the dog has relieved itself. Dogs are not allowed on Dolphin Beach, the Blue Flag beach between Kitchen Windows and the water

slide at Jeffreys Bay’s main beachfront. ) Drinking in public is prohibited. ) No alcohol is allowed on the Blue Flag beach. ) Making fires on the beach or open spaces is not allowed. There are designated areas for making fires such as braai stands. ) Only registered car guards are allowed to operate in the area. They can be identified through their bright yellow caps with the wording “JBay Car Guard”. The Mayor said the Council wished to make the holiday season as welcoming and enjoyable to everyone as far as possible. X1T38NTD-KG081216

Enter online for Marina Mile IT is swim time at Marina Martinique on December 30 when the annual Marina Mile will take place in the pristine salt water canals of the upmarket estate in Jeffreys Bay. Marina Martinique, rated as one of South Africa’s premier open water swimming venues, not only hosted a number of Olympic swimmers over the years, it is also the venue of the annual Eastern Cape Open Water Swim Champs on February 4 and 5. Event organiser Brenton Williams says, “A huge turnout of swimmers is expected as the Marina Mile, one of the most popular events on the Jeffreys Bay holiday calendar. “The Mile caters for all levels of swimmers - from the novice to the swimmers who want to race. The canals are safe and there are no currents or tidal pushes, which makes for a great environment for inexperienced swimmers as well as those who want to see how

fast they can swim a Mile. “With a water temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, it is advisable not to swim in wetsuits as there is a danger of overheating. However, wetsuits will be allowed.” The Mile is sponsored by Nicholas Melck Properties, the Marina Martinique real estate expert. This year’s swimming festival includes the Marina Mile at 12:00, the Marina Double Mile at 09:00 (swimmers must be 12 years or older), the Marina 500 at 11:00, and the Marina Bankto-Bank at 11:30 (participants must be 12 years or younger). Loads of lucky draw prizes will be up for grabs on the morning. Restaurant facilities are available on site at the Marina Wharf Restaurant. Entries are open at https:// www.zsports.co.za/marinamile. It is advisable to pre-enter the events.

KPC Coach Ralton Fortuin assisted by Rubin Oosthuizen has begun coaching youngsters from Sea Vista Primary School on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings on the village common in St Francis.

Sea Vista Headmaster, Charles Coenraad, has enthusiastically embraced the opportunity for his learners and sees to it that the keen youngsters arrive timeously. “There is some real talent for the game among our learners. One of our boys, Lisakhanya Skosana, has already been selected to play for the Kouga under 12 team this year,” says Coenraad. “Our aim for next year when we are in our new school premises, is to source funding to build our own cricket pitch on the school grounds so that we can compete in the school leagues.”

KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 22 DECEMBER 2016

The runners-up are . . .

The first runner-up in the Kouga Express Front Page Baby Competition is Ethan Felix from Humansdorp. He was born on August 3 this year.

The second runner-up in the Kouga Express Front Page Baby Competition is Theo Waldemar Swart from Jeffreys Bay. He was born on June 2, 2016. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

“Ruan is altyd vriendelik.

Dit maak my gelukkig . .

Sy kinderlewe ja....dit was moeilik, sug Freddie.

My kop wou nie so lekker werk nie. Ek moes my kop skoonkry, ek moes die drank los. En ek het. Ek sien toe my kop werk weer reg en die een speelding na die ander kry vorm onder my hande. Ja, my hande.

goed.

. Freddie maak speelgoed op bestelling. Bel hom by 084 512 4650.

PERSOONLIKHEID VAN DIE MAAND

Johan Lottering: Die man agter Procydin JANNIE HOUGH HY is ’n energieke sestig.

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA

I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life, My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. New kit for Patensie soccer team GOVERNMENT and community structures must work together to support efforts that are aimed at developing young people. This was said by Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen during a hand-over ceremony of a soccer kit to the Patensie Football Club last week. The kit was sponsored by citrus company Endulini Fruits. “We have a number of challenges when it comes to our youth. If we do not find sponsors to help us with projects for young people, we will have an even bigger problem,” said Van Lingen. The Mayor said it was every parent’s desire that their children would grow up to live better lives than what their parents had. She thanked both the ward councillor, Amos Mabukane, and the sponsors for their contributions in making sure that young people in the area were not idle. “We live in these little towns and there are only so many people who can help,” she said. Van Lingen encouraged the team and everyone in attendance, including ward committee members, to make use of information outlets such as libraries to empower themselves with

information and to learn of opportunities. Patensie Football Club Team Manager Bonisile Khaza thanked the Mayor and the ward councillor for the gesture.

“Though we have many challenges, it is good to know that someone out there is watching all the efforts we are making in keeping ourselves busy with something as construct-

ive as sport,” he said. The Patensie side is currently lying fourth in the second tier of the premier division of Kouga.

We wish all our valued customers and families a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen (centre) and Ward 10 Councillor Amos Mabukane handed over the sponsored soccer kit to Patensie Football Club Team Manager Bonisile Khaza (second left) and captain Madoda Jacobs (second right). With them is Aaron Nelson who heads the sports portfolio in the ward committee. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
