Big leap forward for Ocean View THE construction of 1500 subsidy (RDP) houses at Ocean View has taken a major step forward. The site of the development was officially handed over to a civils company on Tuesday. The company, Norland Construction (Pty) Ltd, will be installing the bulk infrastructure. Norland was awarded the contract by the provincial Department of Human Settlements (DoHS) and has already started with site establishment. The R46-million project will take about 24 months to complete and includes the installation of roads, water and sewer connections. During this project, the DoHS will open its procurement processes to bidders for the construction of the top structures of the houses. The project is now one of three housing projects currently underway in Kouga, joining Kruisfontein (391 units) and Pellsrus (220 units). It is one of 10 projects approved by the Department for Kouga in 2009 and which were delayed due to insufficient bulk infrastructure. Kouga Planning, Development and Tourism Portfolio Councillor Bryan Dhludhlu said the municipality was pleased to be part of the programme that would change people’s lives. “The people of Kouga and those of Ocean View, in particular, have been waiting for a very long time to be provided with decent housing. It is quite momentous to be part the occasion where we start the realisation of those dreams,” he said. Dhludhlu said the community, especially beneficiaries, will play a very significant role in the success of the project and that there will be continuous engagement with the public to explain the stages of the development. “The civils work will be done in three phases, with the pegged area around King’s College being the first phase. “During construction, we may have to ask residents of the informal settlement to move to a temporary area to make way for

the development and we ask that the community work with us to minimise delays as much as possible,” he said. A number of jobs are expected to be created during the project and the contractor

may enlist the services of local contractors for some of the work. The municipality will re-establish housing committees, made up of beneficiaries, to ensure that there is strong public partici-

pation and liaison throughout the projects. “It is important that the community takes ownership of the project and that the government roleplayers ensure that they are as transparent as possible,” said Dhludhlu.

Blood donors honoured for life-long commitment

Saving a possible 19 350 lives, 67 local blood donors were honoured at a special donor awards ceremony held by the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) at the Savoy Hotel in Jeffreys Bay on May 9. Humansdorp Taxi Association submits petition KOUGA Municipality received a petition from the Humansdorp Taxi Association (HTA) during a peaceful march to the municipality’s headquarters in Jeffreys Bay last week Thursday. The crowd moved swiftly from the Time

Square parking area, where they left their taxis, to the front of the municipal building, where they were met by municipal leadership. The main grievance of the petition was around the existence and operations of oth-

er associations in the area and the legal standing thereof. Receiving the petition of behalf of Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks, Speaker Hattingh Bornman said the municipality would work through the petition and give

feedback to the petitioners within the 14 days, as requested. “We would also like to applaud HTA for the disciplined and exemplary manner in which they conducted their march,” he said.

More than 100 taxis gathered at the Time Square parking area. At the peaceful march were Wiseman Smith, Humansdorp Taxi Association Chairman Richard Hlela, Humansddorp Taxi Association Secreatry Sina Ljander, Humansdorp Taxi Association Public Relations Officer Rudi Jansen and Humansdorp Taxi Association Vice-Chairman Thembalakhe Tshabane. Kouga helps fishermen register to vote KOUGA Municipality is working with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to get fishermen registered as voters. Working through fishers’ organisations and a public awareness campaign, a special registration drive for fishermen is planned for the month of June. Many local fishermen have never participated in elections due to work commitments. The programme came about after engagements between the Jeffreys Bay Fishers’ Forum and the municipality’s Local Economic Development (LED) department. Planning, Development and Tourism Portfolio Councillor Bryan Dhludhlu said fishermen raised a number of issues at meetings, which also included the municipality and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. “One of the challenges that stood out was that the fishermen are out at sea when it’s open voter registration and sometimes during elections. “We took the matter up with the IEC and we liaised with the Fishers’ Forum for a suitable date to reach out to them. We are glad that the commission is willing to go this extra mile to

ensure that the fishermen are registered,” he said. Dhludhlu said most pleasing was that the fishermen would, like other citizens, enjoy the basic right of being a registered voter, with more negotiations to be held with industry role players for the fishermen to be on the mainland during the elections for them to cast their votes. Chairman of the Fishers’ Forum, Zakhele Ngaleka, said they were grateful for the intervention and praised the local authority for being a responsive government. “Yes, we have many challenges and we continue to work with the relevant government spheres on those, but this is without a doubt a major breakthrough. “We always feel like outcasts as we also want to participate in choosing the people who must lead our country and those who make laws that ultimately affect our daily lives,” said Ngaleka. He said his members and colleagues understood the importance of this milestone as some of them would be first-time registered voters despite having been of voting age for many years.

NSRI, LSA link to boost beach safety LOCAL sea rescue volunteers can now train as lifeguards - a first of its kind in the Eastern Cape and the second in the country. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 37 Jeffreys Bay recently affiliated with Lifesaving South Africa (LSA), enabling local sea rescue volunteers to train as lifeguards within sea rescue. “NSRI volunteers have been responding to an increasing number of people in difficulty close to shore - predominantly people caught in rip currents on beaches with no lifeguards,” says Station 37 Jeffreys Bay Station Commander Rieghard Janse van Rensburg. “Sea rescue crews have modified their method of responding to these emergencies. The interventions include a change in the type of craft that we use, innovations in the

training of our crews, and a concerted effort in building relationships with other organisations in the interest of drowning prevention.” Both organisations work together on a national, provincial and local level with special focus placed on education, prevention and rescue. Leading the way in this initiative was NSRI Station 18 Melkbosstrand, followed by NSRI Station 37 Jeffreys Bay. “It is a natural progression for sea rescue to get involved with lifeguarding – we already respond regularly to drowning in progress emergencies, often working closely with club and professional lifeguards,” says Janse van Rensburg. “This step of training some of our NSRI volunteers to be lifeguards, and giving them the opportunity to get the internationally recognised lifeguard award, will allow us to im-

prove and expand our rescue capability. “NSRI lifeguards will do voluntary duty at designated beaches, and as long as the public choose to swim at a beach that has lifeguards on duty and swim between the flags, lifeguards will be able to offer them a safe beach experience.”

Open Day Station 37 Jeffreys Bay will have an Open Day from 10:00 to 12:00 on Saturday, May 26. Those interested to become NSRI lifeguards are welcome to attend. Potential lifeguards must be 14 years or older and be good and confident swimmers. They must furthermore be committed, disciplined, vigilant and willing to help. For more information, contact Janse van Rensburg at 071 896 6831.

Outcomes of valuation objections to be known by June PROPERTY owners who objected to the new valuations of their properties will receive the outcome of their objections by June. Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said the objections would be evaluated by DDP Valuers, the company that compiled the new General Valuation Roll. “The valuer has 30 days in which to consider the objections. The municipality’s Valuations section is currently capturing all the details, following which it will be sent to DDP Valuers for consideration. “DDP will then communicate the outcome of the objection directly to the property owner. We expect this process to be completed by

1 June,” he explained. Just more than 300 property owners from the Kouga region have submitted objections to the new valuations of their properties. The Mayor said this was significantly fewer objections than had been received during the previous valuation process. “Almost 1 000 objections were received during the compilation of the 2013/2014 General Valuation Roll. We are very pleased with the decrease, as this reflects to what extent we have been able to improve the transparency and accuracy of the process,” he said. The new General Valuation Roll will come into effect in the new financial year, starting

June 2018, and will determine how much property owners are expected to pay for rates and taxes. The first draft was submitted to Council in January this year, following which property owners were invited to submit objections if they disagreed with the new valuations. The objection period closed on April 30, 2018. Hendricks said the total value of the new roll was R27,3 billion. He said should objectors not have received feedback from the valuer by June 5, they are asked to contact the municipal Valuations team at 042 200 2157 or email mvdmerwe@kouga.gov.za or rvanvuuren@kouga.gov.za.

STRAWS SUCK . . .

Eateries ban plastic to curb ‘catastrawphe’ MARINDA VISSER-HOUGH HAVE you been “deprived” of your usual plastic straw at your favourite restaurant? It is because they care... The damage to our planet because of our deadly plastic footprint and blasé approach towards how this impacts on the environment, have prompted various local restaurants and hot spots to ban items that are nonbiodegradable. Some patrons go so far as to boycott places that do not promote awareness of the damage done by the unchecked use of plastic. In Jeffreys Bay the Kouga Express sought out some eateries that have joined the worldwide move. Worldwide move There is a worldwide awareness campaign to limit the devastating effect, and locally the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town is calling on all South Africans to put down their drinking straws because we are facing a “catastrawphe”, and something must be done to save our seas. According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), at current rates of pollution, there will likely be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050. In December 2017 South Africa joined the other 193 UN countries and signed a resolution to help eliminate marine litter and microplastics in the sea. Once in the ocean, plastic can take hundreds of years to degrade, all the while breaking down into smaller and smaller “microplastics” – which can be consumed by marine animals and find their way into the human food chain. JBay gets on board Amadeo Bisogno, owner of Fifth Wave Coffee, the hip JBay hotspot, concurs. “People have become more conscious about their environmental footprint. It is like the third wave in coffee - an elevated consciousness in consumerism; being mindful of consumption and coming to the end of excess.” “The focus is turning to quality, and being

aware of how we impact on our living-space.” He states: It can be status-driven where owners want the label of being environmentconscious or about truly caring about what you do to the environment. It has evolved from the mere supply and demand to where does the product come from and where will it end up? Is it harming the environment? “By selling the take-away cup it evokes a ‘thought’ (causing awareness) between buying the cup and actually sipping the coffee,” says Amadeo. In tune with food InFood boldly states on its restaurant wall: “Refuse the straw. That single straw in your cocktail or coffee will be on the planet forever. It takes 200 years to break down... into tiny toxic particles. “The UK and US toss nearly 550 millions of plastic straws PER DAY. Very little is recycled, and much ends up in the ocean. A healthy ocean provides resilience. “ Jayne Davies, owner of the InFood group, supports this drive. We support Nina’s Real Food in Jeffreys Bay has been at the forefront of the move to save our oceans. Rightfully so, as the gorgeous Smithsters, as the owners’ daughters are affectionately known, are surfers who have made their mark on the wave world. “We cannot enjoy the ocean and allow it to be polluted”, says Emma Smith. “We live and surf in the best spot in the world and are responsible to actively conserve and preserve what we have been gifted.” Emma: We, of all people, cannot allow our business to add to any damage of this precious environment. “It is awful to see a perfect wave that is marred by a plastic straw, bag or cup. That means people are just plain lazy and do not care or are not aware of the damage to our ocean.” “It seems like a small step, to go from plastic to biodegradable straws (Biostraws) or bamboo straws, but the impact is significant”, concludes Emma.

Loved recipe book relaunched WRITE-ON Publishing of St Francis Bay will soon release a reproduction and reprint of the iconic 1990’s St Francis Bay recipe books A Taste of St Francis and A Second Taste of St Francis, originally produced by the St Francis Bay Friendship Club in 1993 and 1996 respectively. The two booklets are being combined into one volume: A Taste of St Francis, and in contrast to the quaint typed and photocopied originals, the book will be a high-quality, modern, professionally typeset and bound book. The book contains dozens of recipes, ranging from the sublime to the simple, all submitted by St Francis Bay residents of the day - all their names will appear in the book. It also contains anecdotes and reminiscences by St Francis Bay residents about life in the village and its history. The book is illustrated by dozens of simple, almost primitive, line drawings. At the request of the original compiler of the books, Yvonne Bosman, whose brainchild this project is, part of the proceeds of the sale of the books will be donated to the Kromme Enviro-Trust, which fully endorses the project. The book may be pre-ordered from the Write-On Publishing website, http://writeonpublishing.co.za/index.php/the-store, at a special pre-production price of R120 – retail price will be R150 once the book is printed. Any companies interested in advertising in the book are asked to contact Frank at frank@writeonpublishing.co.za.

In addition to it being available online, Village Superspar in St Francis Bay has agreed to stock the books once they have been produced.

Mountain trail offers unique experience FEATURING upgraded huts and portage services to carry supplies for visitors the Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail - having been awarded the Green Flag Status for a trail under excellent management - not only supports local communities but gives visitors from near and far a unique nature experience. Tsitsikamma means ‘place of many waters’ in the Khoisan language and offers one of the country’s special destinations and experiences. The Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail was recently revamped by the MTO Group, custodians of the area, through its extensive forestry operations, spanning from Tokai in the Cape to Longmore south of Jefferies Bay. All five of the huts on the trail have been upgraded but retain a rustic and outdoorsy experience with basic conveniences and maximum enjoyment. Though the trail is known for its distance and difficulty, portage services are on hand to carry supplies for visitors from hut to hut, making the trail an option for those not keen on walking with a backpack! ‘Slackpacking’ options allow for families to enjoy the hike. The truly hardcore can also consider combining the Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail with the nearby Otter Trail. Lawrence Polkinghorne, CEO of the MTO Group, says by bringing this remarkable trail back into the limelight, it will help to create a boost to local communities. “Visitors are encouraged to shop locally and MTO employ resident communities to maintain the trails. Local educational tours of the area are also frequently arranged, with facilities that cater for anything from single travellers to large

groups. It is time for the rest of South Africa, and the world, to discover the unique Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail.” Situated in the Tsitsikamma mountains, running along the borders of the Western and Eastern Cape, the five-day MTO Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail is a hiker’s dream. It includes beaches, rivers and breathtaking views across rolling vistas. One can also enjoy the local wildlife, which includes wild bush buck, fish eagles, honey badgers, vervet monkeys and even some shy predators. The Tsitsikamma contains about 42% of the animal species of southern Africa and is home to over 1700 plant species, 24 reptiles and 305 species of birds. “From the ocean to the mountains, there is no other trail like this; recently upgraded, the trail is in stunning condition and offers tourists an exceptional experience. It truly is world-class and internally it’s dubbed by us as the 8th wonder of the world. South Africa has no shortage of unique natural wonders, but this trail stands out from the rest, it offers something unique for everyone. It is so important to reconnect with the land; in today’s crazy schedule we often forget to make time to recoup and recharge so take time out to discover one of South Africa’s greatest gifts to her people; the abundance of beauty and captivating vistas will be etched in your memories forever,” says Polkinghome. The green flag status system is officiated by the Hiking Organisation of Southern Africa (HOSA) and ensures hiking trails meet standards in terms of ‘trail outlay, accommodation, facilities and service, as well as the conservation of natural resources.

Local blood donors honoured for life-long commitment MONIQUE BASSON MAKING a difference in other’s lives one unit at a time . . .

Honoured for their continuous blood donations are Frik de Beer (175 units), Johannes Nawrattel (200 units), Kobus Geyser (225 units), Pieter Rautenbach (150 units), Wynand Strydom (225 units), Adriaan Barkhuizen (175 units), Magaretha Scheepers (200 units), Ester van Heerden (175 units), Albert Venter (250 units), and Japie Breytenbach (150 units). PHOTO: MONIQUE BASSON

Saving a possible 19 350 lives, 67 local blood donors were honoured at a special donor awards ceremony held by the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) at the Savoy Hotel in Jeffreys Bay on May 9. They had donated 6 450 units of blood in total. Albert Venter (76) from Jeffreys Bay received the highest milestone for a staggering 250 units of blood donated - a life-long commitment. His motivation? To help others. For Venter, who first donated blood more than four decades ago, his fondest memory about blood donation is the conversations with staff members. And the worse part of donating blood? The prick of the finger. “I thank God for my good health,” says Venter who encourages all residents to donate blood - whether it is their first, second or third time. In addition, 27 donors were honoured for 50 units of blood donated, while eight donors were honoured for 75 units of blood donated. Nine local donors were recognised for over

100 units of blood donated, while seven donors received recognition for 125 units donated. Two locals donated 150 units of blood, four residents 175 and 200 units of blood respectively, and three donors over 225 units of blood. According to SANBS Donor Relations Practitioner Zihona Ruiters, the Jeffreys Bay branch of SANBS, collected 3 221 units of blood for 2017/ 2018 - 187 units more than in the previous year. “The Jeffreys Bay region contributes 13% of the total amount of blood collected for the Port Elizabeth West area, and 4.3% of the total amount of blood collected in the Eastern Cape,” says Ruiters. “The region is furthermore home to the school with the second highest amount of units of blood donated in the country. This is none other than the Humansdorp Secondary High School.”

) Blood drives take place monthly in Jeffreys Bay at the Newton Hall from 12:00 to 18:00 on the first Tuesday of every month. Anyone between the ages of 16 and 65, weighing more than 50kg and who leads a safe and healthy lifestyle can participate. For more information on blood donor criteria or requirements, visit www.sanbs.org.za.

SPEEKHOUT-PLAAS

Hul visie behels verder die be-

Skakel Nadeem Uithaler 073 119 3434 of 042 200 3477 vir inligting.
