In the 3km Ocean Swim, East London’s Deshaan Pillay won from Cape St Francis swimmer Hadyn Holmes with fellow St Francis Bay swimmer, Amica De Jager, winning the ladies’ 3km race. In the 2km swim, De Jager’s older sister, Chane, was placed second while another St Francis Bay triathlete, Vilem Horak, was placed third in the Men’s category. Holmes’s wife, Maria, completed the onslaught by finishing third in the 1km Ocean Swim for ladies. All Stars: soccer tournament winners MONIQUE BASSON THE All Stars are the champions of the first of what will become an annual event, the Kouga Ward 6 Soccer Tournament. They were awarded the championship trophy after they defeated the Black Vultures in the finals of the contest at the old sports field in KwaNomzamo, Humansdorp. The winners of the tournament received a floating trophy, gold medals and R2 000 prize money, while the runners-up received gold medals and R1 000 for their hard work. The Chillies and United Aces came third and fourth respectively, and each team received gold medals and R400. Organised by ANC Ward 6 Councillor Velile (Lefty) Vumazonke, a former Eastern Cape boxing

champion, this is the first year the tournament was hosted. “I know that young people are often attracted to bad things. So, I decided to unite them through soccer once a year. Who knows, we just might produce players that will represent the region at professional level,” says Vumazonke. According to Vumazonke, the tournament will be bigger and better next year. “We hope to make this an annual event. Next year we will include more soccer teams, as well as netball and rugby teams from the area. We also hope to involve various stakeholders such as the Department of Health, the Department of Social Development and the local police.” A special thank you goes to Andili Ngcingolo, Mandla Sihewula, Xabiso Nkosinkulu and Thabo Hermanus. “Without their support this tournament would not have been possibble,” says Vumazonke.
