A FIRST FOR SOUTH AFRICA

Woodlands launches biofuel boiler W

OODLANDS Dairy, the producers of First Choice dairy products in the Eastern Cape, launched the firstever Biofuel Boiler in South Africa on Tuesday - a R30 million capital investment.

Woodlands Dairy launched the firstever biofuel boiler in South Africa on Tuesday. Attending the launch are TF Designs Director Gideon Venter (project contractor), Woodlands Dairy CEO Lex Gutsche, MTO Group CEO Lawrence Polkinghorne and Global Energy Fund Managing Director Gordon Carrihill. PHOTO:IMPACT PHOTOGRAPHY

The boiler’s primary fuel is biomass in the form of sustainable wood chips proposed and provided by MTO Forestry. The partnership with Woodlands Dairy allowed the installation of the Green Bio-Mass fuelled boiler system that will use the wood chip biomass from their sustainable Longmore sawmill as fuel. A long term contract has been signed to supply a minimum of 35 000 tons of biomass per year. According to Kevin Stark, General Manager of Operations at Woodlands Dairy, they use between 90 and 120 tons of biomass on a daily basis. TF Design (Pty) Ltd, designed and delivered a steam boiler system that will supply the majority of Woodlands Dairy’s steam needs. This will not only substantially reduce electricity usage, but will also reduce the use of HFO (oil) and carbon emission. Large quantities of steam are used in dairy processing to pasteurise and sterilise milk. The installation comes as the result of a study conducted in 2012 and 2013 on the Carbon Footprint and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) at the factory. This study provided Woodlands Dairy with insight as to where the base line was and the goal was to put projects in place, based on the information obtained from the study to ultimately lower carbon footprint after constant monitoring. Before the installation, continuous moni-

toring showed that the major contributor to the overall GHG footprint of Woodlands Dairy was imported electricity at 91% of the total. Analysis of the GHG model input data indicated that 72% of the total site’s electricity usage was due to the steam-raising process and boiler. By extension, 65% of the total site GHG footprint was accountable to the electrode boiler and reduction of this would be crucial to lowering the overall footprint. Woodlands Dairy’s mission is to produce and deliver superior food products, while honouring the company’s commitment to service excellence, integrity and conserving the environment. This commitment includes minimising the impact on the environment. It is with this in mind that Woodlands Dairy has committed to implementing an environmental management system that complies with the ISO 14001 standard requirements. This certification ensures that adequate management controls are in place to minimise operational impacts on the environment, ensure legal compliance as a minimum and continually improve our environmental performance. “At Woodlands Dairy our ongoing focus on the environment means the tackling of our footprint right through the life cycle of our business from ‘cow to consumer’, through the reduction of operational impact and increasing recycling initiatives” says Lex Gutsche, CEO, Woodlands Dairy. Woodlands Dairy will commission their own effluent plant later this year. They are also looking at the possibility of generating their own electricity in the future.

to be done to complete construction. “There are testimonies of weeks when there was literally no money to pay wages, only to receive donations at the school on the very morning payments needed to be made. Similarly, we received enthusiastic support from local service providers.” The grand opening of the school will take place from November 25 - 27.

GLA moves to new ‘home’ SEVEN years after the developers of Fountains Estate, Buchner Propvest, donated 7.5 hectares of land to Global Leadership Academy (GLA), the new school building opened its doors for the first time on Monday August 29. This follows many testimonies of God’s provision through people volunteering expertise - man hours and services.

The construction of the school started on April 25, 2013, after the team clearly heard the Lord say, start with the foundations. “A small team of six to eight builders worked through wind and rain to complete the bulk brickwork,” says Stefan Kleyn from GLA. “The past six months there was an escalation in activity as more and more work had

Spring facelift for municipal garden KOUGA Municipality has gone indigenous to celebrate the arrival of Spring. The garden at the municipality’s Jeffreys Bay headquarters received a facelift last week Wednesday and now boasts an array of endemic plants such as spekboom, clivias, dietes, euphorbias and succulents. Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said the make-over reflected the changes taking place in the region under its new leadership. “We promised residents we would clean up the municipal administration, as well as our towns. What better place to start than the municipality’s headquarters, which suffered under the culture of neglect for too long,” she said. She said security lighting in the municpal garden had also been replaced with low-energy lights. “Ultimately, it’s all about sustainability and building a Kouga of which we can all be proud.” She said the decision to go indigenous could not have come at a better time.

“South Africa is a water-scarce country. An indigenous garden is one way to save this precious resource. Since indigenous plants require less water, it will also help us to ensure that our headquarters look well-kept regardless of whatever conditions global warming might send our way,” she said. She said future plans included the creation of an aloe and medicinal garden at the municipality in recognition of the Kouga area’s rich biodiversity and heritage. The yukkas will also be replaced with indigenous trees. The Mayor thanked the Supertubes Surfing Foundation for assisting the municipality with their expertise and making plants from their indigenous nursery available for the project. “It’s been incredible to see the eagerness with which residents, business and community organisations have been coming forward to offer their assistance and expertise. “We have amazing people here in Kouga and the new leadership looks forward to taking hands with each one of them to give this region the care it deserves,” she said.

Unusual heat sparks fires ONE house burnt down, another was damaged and some 62 hectares of field were destroyed when hot and windy conditions sparked numerous fires across the Kouga region on Wednesday, August 31. Preliminary reports suggest that the houses, both with thatch roofs, caught alight when a field fire burning along the R102 at Jeffreys Bay jumped the road due to the wind changing direction. The first house was destroyed, but fire-fighters were able to save the second house, with only roof and water damage reported. No-one was injured. “It is devastating to lose one’s home and belongings. Our thoughts and prayers are with

you. We trust that all you have lost will be restored to you, said Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen. On the same day a fire west of the R330 left Humansdorp without power for about four hours and damaged fencing and grazing. Other fires near Mzingisi Primary in KwaNomzamo, Bo-Blok Graslaagte and near the N2/Hankey road were extinguished, with only damage to field and bush. Fires at PPC (Loerie), Rooidraai (Hankey) and Maiden Hair (Jeffreys Bay) were also contained and extinguished to prevent them from spreading. A fire also broke out at Kwagga but was brought under control by the property owner.

Penguins oil-free; rehabilitation continues THE 92 oil-smeared African penguins - including 61 penguin chicks - are all squeaky clean, and are currently being rehabilitated. The penguins were admitted to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), following the recent oil spill in Algoa Bay. The exact cause of the oil spill is still to be confirmed by authorities investigating the matter. The oiled penguins, along with 61 penguin chicks, were rescued from St Croix Island in a collaborative rescue operation by the Marine Rangers from the Addo Elephant National Park – South African National Parks (SANParks), the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and SANCCOB. They were transported to SANCCOB’s seabird centre in Cape St Francis and to the South African Marine Rehabilitation Centre (SAMREC) in Port Elizabeth. SANCCOB’s team of staff and volunteers washed the first penguins on August 21, and the last one on August 25. The entire washing and rinsing process of each bird can take up to two hours. They are then placed in drying pens under infra-red heat lamps that assist in speeding up the drying process. The washed birds will continue to be cared for by the team at its centre in Cape St Francis, until they are ready for release. Juanita Raath, SANCCOB’s Rehabilitation Coordinator in the Eastern Cape, said, “We are very happy with the progress made so far and that all the birds are now clean. However, the rehabilitation process is far from finished, as we still need to make sure that each bird regains its natural waterproofing, picks up sufficient

Caught hook, line and sinker MONIQUE BASSON USING the right bait, young fashion designer and recyclable material fundi, Monique van Eeden, reeled in the votes at the fifth annual Global Leadership Academy (GLA) Trashy Fashion Show - for the third time in a row. Van Eeden (14) from Nico Malan High School, whose recyclable dress was designed by herself with the help of family and friends, was crowned the overall winner of the fashion show held at the school’s new eco-campus next to Fountains Mall on September 2. Displaying their love for fishing, the entire dress was made from empty fishing spools, fish hooks and left-over fishing line. According to mom Babette van Eeden, the majority of the different materials used were donated by various fishermen in Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay. “Hence the multi-coloured dress,” says Van Eeden. “We did not

buy any line or braid. Even the lumo night lights used for fishing were donated to us by a generous fisherman from his stash.” Donated fish hooks were used for the earings, as well as for the heart detail at the back of the dress. Van Eeden says the vision behind the dress is to make people more aware about nature conservation and to show them that fishing materials are recyclable. “Due to commercial overfishing and negligent fishermen leaving their fishing equipment such as hooks and lines on the beach, we decided that our theme would be a dress made entirely from fishing equipment.” She furthermore walked away with the award for the Most Eye-Catching Effort. Last year, Van Eeden took the honours with her innovative drress made from VHS tapes and vinyls of yesteryear. The dress was designed by Bianca Stuke from JBay Academy.

ST Francis Tourism is celebrating Tourism Month through their Tourism Buddy Campaign by giving staff in the hospitality industry the chance to be a “tourist in your own town” for a day. “Visitors will ask any local for information, but not all locals are prepared to answer, as some of them never had the opportunity to enjoy what we want our visitors to enjoy,” says Esti Stewart from St Francis Tourism. “So we decided to invite 12 staff members at a time and we do a ‘Tour de St Francis’ with them. At a later stage we will go to Oyster Bay for a day, as well as Humansdorp, which is also part of our area.” The staff are welcomed with a cup of coffee and home baked rusks before they embark on a canal cruise, a new experience for most of them. “As we drive through the village, we show them all the points of interest, and tell them a little about the history of the area, but the focus is on fun and activities. After a visit to the Heritage Eco Centre we walk the Two Harbours Walk to Port St Francis for a calamari tasting; we view the St Francis Links on golf carts, and after visiting SANCCOB, if it is a nice day, end it with a soft drink at Sunset Rock.” Each Tourism Buddy will receive a badge to wear with his uniform, so visitors will be able to identify those who can assist with information. “A big thank you to our members for offering their activities at no cost.”

The wide wooden deck around the centre and the look-out point, offer an unspoilt view of the Cambria Valley. The R4.5 million Centre was launched in December 2007. It forms part of the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve and was funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. During the construction, training opportunities were provided to local community members and about 300 temporary jobs were created to alleviate poverty. The Centre celebrates the rich and unique biodiversity

Kitchens Tiles vier 10de bestaansjaar KITCHEN & Tiles is ’n hele 10 jaar oud.

Traxdor bied ‘n uitstekende produk, aluminium trellis hekke, wat ‘n groot behoefte is, aangesien alles so graag by die see roes. Hulle verskaf verder die “transparent window bars”. Aalwyn en Jolene wil graag hul personeel bedank. “Sonder hul harde werk sou ons nooit so `n groot, suksesvolle besigheid kon hê nie.”

Ontmoet die span by Kitchen & Tiles in Jeffreysbaai.

THIS IS ONE-DAY SPECIAL SPIRITUAL PRAYER Changed our financial & marriage lives

James 52 years Joubertina. I met ths powerful PROF KATO on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for many years, I tried many healers, sangomas, pastors and prophets but failed. I could not believe when PROF KATO showed me my enemies through his mirror and im my dreams and all the dirt they were doing to put my life down, everything he showed was true. PROF KATO helped me with spiritual shortboys that fixed all my financial problems and I managed to pay all my loans/debts in short time. FINALLY MY DREAMS HAVE COME TRUE AFTER 9 YEARS OF SUFFERING AND EMPTY PROMISES 063 205 9775

or 9 years of suffering, we are now happily married. For 9 years I lived in an abusive marriage. After reading and listening to various testimonials about M Aisha in a magazine and on radio, I visited all my past and present problems and revealed that my husband was involved in a relationship with another lady. She showed me the lady “live in a mirror” M Aisha helped to separate that lady from my husband. She also made my enemies and in-laws come and confess all the bad things they done to my family. M Aisha performed a special prayer to bind my marriage. Today we are happily together. I highly recommend her to those suffering a smiliar fate as mine. To get solutions: Financial, children, property, court cases, business, love, health, jobs and family problems, drug and alcohol addictions and manhood problems, hire black and white Voodoo doll.
