STORMSRIVER ADVENTURES, ISLAND VIBE

Local firms scoop tourism awards

WO local adventure organisations scooped four major national tourism awards at the recent 2015 Lilizela Tourism Awards - placing the Kouga region firmly on the tourism adventure map of South Africa. Eastern Cape operator Stormsriver Adventures took top honours with Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours being voted the Best Visitor Experience of the Year in the Action and Adventure category. The company furthermore took home the Lilizela Imvelo Award for the Best Practice Economic Impact, as well as the BBEE Award for small enterprises. Island Vibe triumphed in the Best Visitor Experience of the Year by coming out tops in the Beach Experience category. A total of 954 entries was received for the Lilizela Awards from businesses around South Africa. Some 548 qualified as provincial finalists, 252 as national finalists and 68

were announced as national winners - of which the Eastern Cape scooped 10 national wins. They were trumped by KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape with 12 winners respectively and Mpumalanga with 11 national winners. According to Stormsriver Adventures CEO, Ashley Wentworth, sixteen years of dedication to responsible tourism by their de-dicated team and managing director Anneline Wyatt have culminated in these fantastic accolades. “The operating company is now 48% employee owned, endorsing our commitment to transformation,” says Wentworth. “We will continue to champion the principles of responsible tourism in the future.” Island Vibe owners Loren and Taise Sampson say: “Winning the award is a huge affirmation for us. It is an awesome recognition for all the hard work put into Island Vibe over the past 19 years. “A huge thank you and congratulations to Island Vibe’s team for coming out tops! Receiving the Best Beach Experience in SA sums up exactly what we are about – much more than a bed, we capture a whole emotional interaction of adventure, holiday and good times. Island Vibe is literally on the beach which allows guests to maximize the experience available to them - surfing, sandboarding, SUP, swimming or just chilling. Our new motto puts it quite nicely: Real People. Real Travel.” ) The awards are an initiative of the National Department of Tourism, in partnership with provincial tourism authorities, which seeks to honour excellence in the sector.

ASTON BAY

‘Hole’ lot of swervingproblems MONIQUE BASSON POTHOLES throughout Aston Bay are devouring vehicles one tyre at a time. This comes as the roads in Aston Bay are riddled with potholes, compromising the safety of road users. Notorious for having some of the worst potholes in the Kouga, driving on these roads are extremely difficult and require special swerving skills - not too much to the left or to the right or motorists will hit yet another pothole. Following the recent rain, driving has become an even bigger challenge. Some roads developed crater-like potholes that are expanding by the day. Residents, who use these roads on a daily basis, are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of potholes on the roads and raised their concerns about the condition of roads and the lack of maintenance. “From extensive travel experience all over South Africa, I can state that Aston Bay’s roads are edging towards being some of the worse in South Africa,” says resident dr. Derek Askew “Our local municipality can do much better than this. “Given that we are largely a holiday and tourist destination and derive much of our income through visitors, we really need to step up our game when it comes to road maintenance. People do not want to come to a place where you spend much of your driving time looking out for potholes, as opposed to just driving and enjoying the ride.” According to Askew, the problem escalated over the past 30 months. “This year especially, has seen a serious deterioration in our

roads. Not only have the potholes not been fixed, but when they are, they break-up within two to three months,” says Askew. “This is not the kind of Aston Bay we want to live in.” According to Kouga municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, the municipality is systematically resealing roads but the annual budget is not enough to do all the work in one go, so it is going to be on ongoing process. “The municipality is also trying to source funding from the provincial government to put towards road repairs, especially since roads such as Da Gama Road and St Francis

Drive are actually their responsibility,” says Randall. “Large sections of roads, for example on the beachfront and Jeffreys Street, have already been repaired. Aston Bay is also on the programme. The target date is to attend to Aston Bay by December at the latest.” According to Randall, in the past the potholes were simply filled up with gravel and tar. “These repairs did not last long, especially if it rained. Over the past few months the municipality has, however, been able to improve the quality of the repair work. For example,

as can be seen in Da Gama Road, a square section of road is now first removed around the potholes and this square area then filled as a whole. This helps to keep the pothole closed for longer,” says Randall. “A general challenge in Jeffreys Bay is that the roads do not have strong foundations. This would date back to when they were built. Added to this, road maintenance is costly, as a result, the municipality has not been able to reseal roads as often as would be ideal. This means that once there is a problem with the road, it’s difficult to stop that problem from spreading.”

Volgens Wiehahn is Hallsein ’n welbekende veiligheidswag in Astonbaai, sowel as Paradysstrand.

Maggie Langlands receives national award A singular honour was bestowed on Maggie Langlands last week as BirdLife South Africa presented her with an “Owl Award” for her outstanding contribution to the conservation and protection of birds and their habitat. At this award ceremony, held at the Southern Sun Hyde Park Hotel in Johannesburg, BirdLife South Africa acknowledged companies and individuals who donate their time and money to the organisation, which makes it possible to continue all their conservation programmes and projects. Maggie was among companies, captains of industry and well-known personalities to receive this award. Only twelve Owl Awards, one Owlet (for a youngster) and two EagleOwl Awards are presented each year from the many nominations nation-wide that are submitted, so it is a notable honour for Maggie to have been chosen. Maggie took it upon herself, and has spent the last five years organising and motivating a dedicated team of monitors from the local St Francis Bay Bird Club to undertake regular counting of birds potentially affected by the Wind Turbine Farms constructed and under construction in the Kouga Municipal area of the Eastern Cape.

This undertaking is independent on any formal arrangement set up by those directly involved in the Wind Farms. The species specifically under scrutiny are endangered Denham’s Bustard, Blue Crane and White-bellied Korhaan. Other priorities include a large population of Black Harrier, many of the larger raptors – Crowned Eagle, Martial Eagle, Long-crested Eagle – and large migrations of Amur Falcons and White Stork. With her eye on the future, she has also been instrumental in ensuring that the construction and operating companies involved are aware of their current and prospective environmental obligations and is at present leading an initiative on behalf of the St Francis Kromme Trust to establish a Stewardship Biodiversity Programme with local landowners, farmers, and communities whose land is affected directly or indirectly, by these turbines. Farmers involved in these initiatives may realise benefits such as increased marketing opportunities, tax benefits and access to support and advice from conservation staff. The Eastern Cape Nature and Tourism Department is fully supporting this endeavour and with Maggie’s assistance and recommendations has appointed a full-time Environmental Officer to steer the project.

Maggie paid tribute to her faithful team of birders who volunteer their time and to monitor birds on wind farms. All records are sub-

mitted to Birdlife South Africa on a six weekly cycle as well as to the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town.

Wat gebeur as ek nou ’n rower vang?

Gerda Swart, polisiewoordvoerder.

M ake C hristmas hhappen appen ffor or tthese hese lless ess ffortunate ortunate Make Christmas MONIQUE BASSON DO something amazing this Christmas. Help give a gift to the less fortunate children in Jeffreys Bay. Hundreds of children in the Kouga region will not receive a Christmas present this year unless the residents of Kouga rally round to help them. This year the Kouga Express, in conjunction with Pick `n Pay and Fountains Mall, will be collecting gifts for the 343 deserving learners at King’s College in Pellsrus, Jeffreys Bay. The Kouga Express relies on the generosity of the community to satisfy the demand for presents. Without the generous support of local residents this appeal will fail. Each learner wrote his or her wish onto a special Christmas “wish card”, with their names and age. Wishes range from nail polish to a guitar and from an art set to a Barbie doll. Some little boy is dreaming of his first ever Ninja Turtle toy or a ball, while another girl cannot wait to go to church with her new hair accessories. There

are even practical wishes like stationary for school. These cards are displayed on the Christmas tree in the forecourt at Pick `n Pay in Fountains Mall. How it works Residents are able to select the wish card or cards that appeal to them and buy the gifts written on the cards. Residents can either wrap the presents themselves, or have them wrapped by the Kouga Express team. The learner’s name, age and grade must be clearly marked on the present. Each card is unique to a deserving child, and so if a card is taken and not returned, it means that a learner could miss out on a present for Christmas. Presents can be dropped off at either the Kouga Express’s office at 75 Da Gama Road in Jeffreys Bay or at Pick `n Pay. All the presents must be returned by November 25. The presents will be handed out to the learners at a special Christmas party at the school on December 4. Residents of Aston Bay suffers burst water pipes at least once or twice a week. Dr. Derek Askew is standing here at a water pipe that was repaired in Woodpecker Street, however, more than a month later neither the road or wall that was damaged in the process, have been repaired. PHOTO:MONIQUE BASSON

Burst pipes anger residents MONIQUE BASSON RESIDENTS of Aston Bay have had enough of a plethora of water pipe bursts cutting off their water supply due to the Kouga Municipality’s inability to fix the problem. Just in Flamingo Road, a total of 22 water pipe bursts have been recorded in the last two years - 15 of which occurred in the last two months. The whole of Aston Bay suffers burst water pipes once or twice a week - leaving residents without water for hours on end. “The burst pipes have completely washed away the road in some places, including the rocks and tar holding the road together,” says Aston Bay resident dr Derek Askew. “These roads now need extensive repair.” While on the other hand, small unattended leaks cause even more potholes in the road. “Water leaks caused by tree roots on municipal land have still to be addressed, after it was already reported numerous times since 2013,” says Askew. “A water leak in Glenny Buchner was reported about a month ago, and still nothing has been done to repair the leek. “A burst pipe is attended to quickly, but small leaks appear to have very low priority. Let’s not even mention the enormous volumes of water wasted in all these events.” Adding to the problem, is the damage to driveways and sidewalks caused by municipal workers when they dig up the ground to fix the burst pipe. According to Askew, dug up driveways and paving are left for two to three months before being fixed - causing severe inconvenience to affected residents. “A huge hole in the middle of the road in Pelican Crescent only fixed last week after being left as an open pit since the end of August,” says Askew. According Kouga municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, the continuous burst water pipes are due to the ageing infrastructure. “The municipality’s budget for water infrastructure has mainly gone towards installing water infrastructure to new developments and areas which never had access to water before. Consequently, the budget for replacing existing systems has been very limited,” says Randall. “At present the focus is on repairing bursts as they occur. “Our sincere apologies to residents for having to wait several weeks to have their driveways or sidewalks repaired. These delays are usually the result of operational limitations. For example, the number of vehicles and workers available at any given time compared to the number of call-outs they receive.

JANNIE GESELS TONGINI KIES

Grootmens of kind? Hoe volwasse is dié ou, hê? Jy is dus dié boy in jou eie oë. Soos ’n stout knapie. Hy is mos hoeka selfingenome, selfsugtig. “I did it my way,” soort van. Ryk vroutjie: “Wat kan ek vir jou verjaardag koop, my man?” Hy: “Dink jy hierdie broek laat my vet lyk, Liefie?” As albei volwasse is, nee. ’n Mens gorrel in elke geval nie sulke nonsens nie. Sela.

NOTICE OF APPLICATIONS OF FRUIT FLY BAIT

Notice is hereby given that between four and six aerial applications of Fruit Fly Bait, GF-120 (Reg No. L7331, Act 36 of 1947), will take place between October 2015 and April 2016 in the Elgin/Grabouw/Villiersdorp/Vyeboom, Hex River Valley, Ceres, Wolseley, Langkloof, Orange River, Robertson and Franschhoek/Simondium production areas. These applications are part of the Deciduous Fruit Industry’s area wide action regarding the control of fruit flies in the above mentioned areas. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Fruit flies are a phytosanitary pest which leads to millions of rands direct damage every year and can cause trade restrictions to certain export markets. All available methods for control measures are presently being used to fight this pest. Production areas close to residential areas are being hit the hardest by fruit flies because of insufficient control measures in these areas. The control measures that are being used at present may include the following: 1. Monitoring of fruit fly numbers with traps containing either a pheromone or a controlled release vapour attractant system. 2. Sanitation in orchards and vineyards where fruit flies can hatch, hide or find shelter and food to live on. 3. Regularly applying fruit fly bait in orchards and vineyards. 4. Releasing sterile males on a weekly basis. GF-120 Fruit Fly Bait is registered for both ground and aerial applications in South Africa and other countries. All the ingredients are natural and GF-120 is used internationally as a very low risk product, which is organically certified by OMRI. The main ingredients in GF-120 include the following: Plant protein and sugar formulation, with spinosad as the active ingredient. Spinosad is obtained from a fermenting process of Saccharopolyspora spinosa which is a natural ground organism. When this product is used according to the recommendation, only 0.24g of the active ingredient will be spread over a hectare in scattered droplets. If applied as prescribed, there will be minimal risk for animals, human health, birds and any other organisms in the environment, as it will only attract and kill fruit flies. MORE FEATURES: Colour - light brown to brown Moderately sticky Not corrosive or irritating Soluble in water and washes off easily Not prone to staining Despite above mentioned features of GF120, residents are requested to adhere to the following: 1. All children should be indoors at time of application. 2. Seek shelter at time of application. 3. Do not hang out any washing during this period. 4. Where possible, vehicles should be under roof (if any drops fall on a vehicle one can easily wash it off with water without leaving any stains). GF-120 is certified for use by organic farmers PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT THE TARGET AREA FOR AERIAL BAITING IS NOT TOWN AREAS GF 120 product and technical enquiries: Terason: Niel Kruger (supply: distribution) - 021 873 6177 Aerial application: Charl van Rooyen (Rotor Worx) - 021 864 1501 Renda Walters (Rotor Worx) - 079 521 3985 Nando Baard (Fruit FlyAfrica) - 021 882 9541 X1QP7YWD-221015-KG-mglhew-fly

Celebrations at St Francis parkrun ESTI STEWART SATURDAY, October 24 was a day of celebration at St Francis parkrun when two of their parkrunners, Felix Muchika and Pam Stark, ran their 100th parkrun - the first for St Francis to qualify for Club 100 membership. It is a parkrun tradition that fellow runners join the 50 or 100 parkrun finisher with a red flag (for 50) or a black flag (for 100) for the last 50m. As Muchika, who runs in the 60 – 64 years age category is normally under the top three, his fellow runner and employer Colleen Butler started her run an hour earlier with Yvonne Rob, in order to be at the finish line with the new black flag to run the last bit with Felix. More parkrunners didn’t run on the day, so they could wait and cheer for Felix at the finish line. Felix then ran back to Pam so she could finish her 100th run with Felix on her side. At the same occation events directors Eric and Esti Stewart volunteered for the 101th time. “Although we celebrated Felix and Pam’s amazing achievement, we also celebrated life,” says Eric Stewart. “It is great to see young and old get up every Saturday to run – despite their age, their health, no matter the weather. At the parkrun we are one, we are family. It is always nice to see parkrun tourists from parkruns as far as the UK and Australia.” Since the inaugural St Francis parkrun on July 13, 2013 a total of 2 068 different runners completed 11 927 runs

Cnr R102 & Drakenstein Rd Fountains Estate, Jeffreys Bay (Behind Fountain Mall)

covering a total distance of 59 63km, and there were 2 253 new Personal Bests. On Saturday, at event number 119, Anele Singintaba (SM20-24) was first over the line in 19:07, followed by Felix Muchika (VM60-64) in 20:49 and Clinton Hempel (VM45-49) in 21:10. Stephanie Arndt (VW50-54) was first for the ladies in 22:32, with Louise Ackerman (VW35-39) second in 23:17 and Jeanne Beary (VW40-44) third in 24:45. There were 69 runners, of whom 9 were first timers and 2 recorded new Personal Bests.
