Or in this case, it is wearing trash. The annual Global Leadership Academy (GLA) Trashy Fashion Show will for the first time cross the borders of the Kouga region and take to the catwalk at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth. “We have been invited to form part of the opening ceremony of the prestigious First Lego League (FLL) tournament at the NMMU Indoor Sport Centre on October 24,” says an elated Lizette Kemp, organiser of the Trashy Fashion Show. “This means that not only will the models showcase their outfits at our show, but they will also showcase their ‘trashy wear’ at the tournament. “This will furthermore grant us the opportunity to promote GLA’s Echo Campus.” In addition to the fashion show, the models will be walking around the tournament in their outfits and the art and articles made from recyclable material will be on display. This year, a panel of judges has been appointed and participants will compete in various age categories. Dinsdag sou ’n werknemer, wat uit ’n hoë toring oorkant Dolfynstrand oor die wyd uitgestrekte kus van Jeffreysbaai uitkyk, vir haaiwagdiens aanmeld.

Maar toe val alles deur die mat. “Ons het beoog om ’n bekende man, wat slegs as Dr. Hook aan ons bekend is, aan te stel, maar hy is glo oorlede,” verduidelik Laura-Leigh Randall, woordvoerder van die Kouga-munisipaliteit. Dr. Hook is glo deur plaaslike inwoners geken as die man wat kon sien wanneer gevaarlike haaie naby is. “Dit was nooit ’n amptelike werk nie. Die man het dit uit die liefde vir die saak gedoen,” sê Randall. Sy kennis van haaie, wat hy blykbaar in Durban opgedoen het, het gehelp om die haaie wat té naby aan die strand draai, uit te ken.

Tog lyk dit nou of Dr. Hook se haai-kundigheid moontlik ’n nalatenskap het. “Daar is blykbaar ’n man wat altyd saam met Dr. Hook gewerk het. Die vriend het glo alles wat hy weet by Dr. Hook geleer – en dit is die man na wie ons nou soek.” Randall meen Dr. Hook se “haai-vriend” sal die geskikte kandidaat vir dié pos wees, aangesien daar nie nou tyd aan opleiding afgestaan kan word nie. Randall beskryf ’n goeie haaiwagter as iemand wat deeglike kennis van haaie, die see, plaaslike omgewing en noodhulp het. “Indien gevaar dreig, moet die haairoeper

’n vlag op die hoofstrand hys en die Nasionale Seereddingsinstituut (NSRI) inlig om waarskuwingsvlae op die ander strande te hys.” Die haaiwagter sal deur die munisipaliteit betaal word, maar Randall beklemtoon dat dit slegs ’n korttermyn-aanstelling sal wees, tot die raad permanente maatreëls gereed het. “Die gebruik van haainette en robotvliegtuie is van die moontlike tegnieke wat teen haaigevaar ingespan sal word,” sê Randall. Terwyl amptenare soek na Dr. Hook se handlanger, wat hopelik sy opvolger sal word, sal ’n plaaslike menseredder of NSRIvrywilliger tydelik instaan.

HUMANSDORPERS is verslae oor die onverwagse afsterwe van Anton Stresso (68), diereliefhebber en geliefde inwoner van die dorp. Stresso (68) was op 2 Julie onderweg na Wellington in die Wes-Kaap toe ’n vragmotor glo naby Tsitsikamma sy bakkie aan die regterkant gestamp en dit laat rol het. Hy is met kopen handbeserings in die Kareedouw-hospitaal opgeneem en later na die Livingstone-hospitaal in Port Elizabeth oorgeplaas. Stresso is ontslaan, maar later in die Humansdorp-hospitaal opgeneem, voor hy ná ’n paar dae ontslaan is. “Die afgelope Vrydag het Anton saam met sy vrou, Jenny, gesit en koffie drink en haar later gevra om vir hom droëwors te bring sodat hy dit vir sy hondjies kan voer. Jenny het dit gebring en toe uit die kamer gestap. “Skielik het dit vir haar geklink of die hondjies baklei. Sy het weer die kamer binnegegaan en toe gesien haar man het gesterf,” het Kobus Geyser, ’n inwoner van die dorp, per Anton Stresso FOTO: VERSKAF epos laat weet.

Gemeenskap herstel rioolaanleg

Dié inisiatief het gevolg nadat AfriForum ’n ultimatum aan die munisipaliteit gestuur het om die rioolaanleg te herstel en weer op standaard te bring. Dit het egter op dowe ore geval en die gemeenskap, waaronder boere van Louterwater, genoop om self in te gryp. “Die terrein was in ’n haglike toestand met geen sekuriteit nie. Ons het dit onder meer ontbos en ’n ingenieur aangestel om die sisteem te herstel,” sê Delarey Rademeyer, voorsitter van die Langkloof-tak. Die maatskappy, Water Engineering Consult, het ’n verslag saamgestel wat die toestand van Misgund se riool-aanleg omskryf en oplossings uiteensit. Luidens die verslag was daar ’n verstopping in die besinktenk wat verhoed het dat bakterieë, wat vir die verwerking van

riool benodig word, gekultiveer kon word. “AfriForum is van mening dat moderne rioleringswerke deurgaans gemonitor moet word. Daarom het die ingenieurs nie net die aanleg herstel nie, maar die gemeenskap opgelei om dit te onderhou. Met voldoende instandhouding sal die rioolaanleg binne drie weke weer gesuiwerde water lewer,” sê Rademeyer. Marnus van Staden, AfriForum se provinsiale koördineerder vir die Oos-Kaap, beklemtoon dat die Langkloofgemeenskap afhanklik is van sy landboubedryf en dat dit een van die min gebiede in Suid-Afrika is waar boerdery die munisipaliteit se hoof ekonomiese sektor is. “Die munisipaliteit spog graag oor die landboubedryf in die gebied, maar wanneer boere vra vir ondersteuning word hulle geïgnoreer. Ons het geen ander keuse gehad as om self in te tree nie. Daar is tans ook damme wat deur die besproeiingsraad bestuur word om te verseker dat boere hul gewasse veilig kan groei.” AfriForum gaan die kostes van die herstelwerk van die munisipaliteit terugeis.

Maar Gregg Onthong, ’n bestuurder by die SAEHA, meen die skoonmaak van die terrein is die munisipaliteit se verantwoordelikheid. “Die graf is wel onder jurisdiksie van die Departement van Kuns en Kultuur, maar die Kouga-munisipaliteit is verantwoordelik vir die skoonmaak daarvan. “Ons het intussen ’n brief aan die departement (van Kuns en Kultuur) gerig wat vra dat die graf herstel word, ook dat dit met beter sekuriteit toegerus kan word sodat vandale nie weer toeslaan nie. As alles goed verloop, kan die herstelproses én die omheining daarvan dalk in Augustus begin,” sê Onthong.

The victim is then prompted to send his or her banking details. When the scammers are equipped with the necessary information, they can steal funds from your account at any time. Sars warns taxpayers to be extra vigilant. Sars urges all taxpayers to rather contact them at 0800 007 277, should they be unsure about any Sars-related payments.

Tyron triumphs at Core Sokkie Jol THE third edition of the Core Sokkie Jol presented by Sector 9, went down in torrential conditions at the Die Vrieskas Blue Water Estate on July 18. The Sokkie Jol is a fun skateboarding event that combines downhill riding with obstacles (turns, berms and ramps). The day started with two-hours of practice runs for the riders to get used to the wet conditions. The weather couldn’t deter the riders who attacked the course with gusto. When the 43 entrants were thoroughly used to the course (and thoroughly soaked, many wearing black bags to keep them dry) the racing got underway with a time trial. From there the top 32 went into a man-on-man, elimination race format. The ‘godfather’ of downhill racing in South Africa, Kent Lingeveldt, who travelled from

Cape Town for the event. “Sure it’s dangerous in the wet, but only as dangerous as you make it,” he commented during the early runs. “It’s new tar here, so even though it’s wet, it’s slightly grippy so cats can still go fast. Obviously not as fast as if it were dry, but it’s controllable,” he said. Tyron Coetzee took the win. “It was very interesting coming up here to help out with the setup. It was dry and I was amped, but today was pouring with rain, so it was wet and slippery,” he said afterwards. “There were a lot of guys sliding out. It was really intense, so you really had to think about what you’re doing.”

Newman defends title in cold water swim ICY water that measured between 11 to 12 degree Celsius, heavy rain and strong winds did little to deter the defending Infood Blu Cold Water Classic title-holder, Rebecca Newman, when she completed the 7.5 km swim in two hours at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay on Saturday. Newman swam the event according to Channel rules, which meant she could only wear a speedo type costume, goggles and a single swimming cap. “It was really tough out there today and it was very cold, but I felt confident and pushed the pace just after the 5 km mark and things worked out for me,” said Newman. The first man home was Iain Geddes, who has a Robben Island crossing under his belt - experience which helped in the chilly salt water canals of Marina Martinique. Now in its third year, Slake Adventures once again hosted the JBay Winterfest Funduro. Torrential downpours the previous night before had made the course muddy and slippery.
