FTER months of searching for the Kouga Express Miss Matric Dance of 2017, the panel of judges finally announced the overall winner.

She is the radiant Xanlyn Syce from Humansdorp Secondary School who bowled the judges over with her stunning dress and overall look at her matric dance held at Mentorskraal in Jeffreys Bay on June 28.

Xanlyn is the third Kouga Express Miss MaAfter much deliberation by our panel of judges, the winner of the Kouga Express Miss Matric Dance Competition for 2017 has been chosen.

She is Xanlyn Syce from Humansdorp Secondary School.

She found the design for her dress while browsing through famous designers’ dresses.

“I came across a celebrity dress which was worn on the red carpet. I used the basic design and asked my designer, Anton Randall, to incorporate it into what I had in mind,” says Xanlyn. “Technically it is our own original design.”

According to Xanlyn, it took two months for her dream dress to be completed.

Her hair and make-up were done by her sister, Xanlee, who is currently studying in that field of work.

She was accompanied to the dance by Seth de Swardt.

Her mother encouraged her to enter the Kouga Express Miss Matric Dance competition. “I took a leap of faith to see where it might lead me,” says Xanlyn.

Her advice to next year’s matriculants?

“Work hard in order to achieve your dreams and aspirations in life. Mosaic artwork dazzles at Dolphin Beach amphitheatre KOUGA Municipality has unveiled a new public artwork at the Jeffreys Bay beachfront.

The mural was created by local residents who were trained in mosaic through the municipality.

Kouga Tourism and Creative Industries Portfolio Councillor, Frances Baxter, said the work had been installed at the amphitheatre at Dolphin Beach.

A mosaic is a piece of art or image made from putting together small pieces of coloured glass, stone or other materials. It is mainly

used for decorative purposes.

“In addition to the beachfront mosaic, trainees have already been making use of their new skill to create house numbers and other items that can be sold,” she said. “The municipality would like to help them set up a cooperative, with the necessary support for their business to become sustainable,” she said.

“There are examples in other areas of glass being recycled for use in mosaics. This is the next step we would like to explore so as to facilitate the growth of this creative industry locally.”

Municipality meets social partners about egrets KOUGA Municipality recently met with affected and interested parties to discuss challenges brought about by the presence of flocks of egrets in residential areas.

The meeting took place at the Newton Hall in Jeffreys Bay in November.

In recent years there have been a number of reports about nuisances caused by the birds, especially during the breeding period which is around October and November every year.

Social Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson said the birds are believed to migrate from surrounding cattle farms to areas with taller trees, in particular blue gum and fig trees.

“These invasive trees provide ideal spots for the egrets to build nests due to their height.

The presence of a large flock of these birds is a risk as their faeces may lead to health problems, especially for children, in addition to

the general nuisance they cause,” he said.

Benson said the meeting agreed on a number of steps to be taken, including that each property owner had a responsibility to ensure that trees are pruned before the breeding season of the egrets start.

“In the event that birds have to be removed, such action will be coordinated by the municipality, the SPCA and the Department of Environmental Affairs, in the interest of protecting wildlife.

“The municipality will advise the public of any planned large-scale bird or chick removal using, among other platforms, social media,” said Benson.

The currently infested areas at 45 Da Gama Road and 196 Oosterland Street will be attended to in March 2018 once the breeding season is over.

Green ID book remains a legal form of identification THE Department of Home Affairs said it has taken note of a message purported to be from the department announcing that the lifespan of the green barcoded ID book comes to an end on March 31, 2018.

“No such announcement has been made by the department. We wish to make it clear that the green barcoded ID book remains a legal form of identification and will continue to be until such time that the Live Capture System is rolled out to all Home Affairs offices to ena-

ble South Africans to apply for Smart ID cards at their nearest offices,” the department said in a statement.

“The department has developed a plan to systematically phase out the green ID book and ultimately consolidate the restoration, common citizenship, identity and dignity to South Africans. To this end, we call on South Africans to apply for Smart ID cards at any of the 180 offices that are equipped with the Live Capture System.”

According to Olivier, the value of his property has taken a huge knock due to the two masts. He is furthermore concerned about the negative health effects it may have and the unbearable noise when work needs to be done on the masts.

Another thorn in his flesh, is the newly built wall of remembrance just metres from his front door.

In a bid to block the view of the two masts and wall of remembrance, Olivier closed the side of his carport.

But much to his dismay, he received a fine from the Kouga Municipality as the plans for the wall were not approved by them. He furthermore received a fine for the carport and vibracrete wall that also are not on the approved house plans - something Olivier was unaware of.

“I have been struggling for the last 8 months to have the plans approved, but to date I have not heard anything back from the municipality,” says Olivier. “It feels as if I am being victimised.

The controversial cellular masts are constructed on the grounds of the church on the corner of Kameeldoring Street and Pride of India Crescent - right against Terry Olivier’s boundary fence.

Voicing his disapproval, Olivier says, neither he nor his neighbours received any notification - a ploy he believes service providers are using to avoid feedback from those closest to the property.

“We basically heard on the grapevine about what’s going on,” he says. “How can you just, without anyone’s consent or approval from the neighbours, plan to construct a cellphone tower?

“First it was MTN, and now Vodacom is in the process of erecting a second cellular mast.

Planning and Development Portfolio Councillor Freddy Campher, however, says, that both MTN and Vodacom have permission to erect a cellular mast.

“Public participation was done when MTN applied to use the church tower for their transmitter and approval was subsequently granted,” says Campher. “It is important to note that the transmitter was mounted on an already existing structure which is part of the approved church building design.

“When Vodacom applied to have their transmitter attached to this structure as well, it was deemed that public participation was not necessary as the church tower was already being used as a cellphone tower.

“The process only required for Vodacom to submit plans of the alterations they planned on making to the structure. These were received and approved by our Town Planning Department.”

Top artists to perform at Rock Lily ROCK Lily in Cape St Francis will be a beehive of music activity this festive season.

First on the star-studded lineup is The Sunshine Factory Band on December 8. They will be followed by Jamie-Lee Sexton on December 8. Both shows start at 20:00.

Raising funds one stitch at a time MONIQUE BASSON PROLIFIC quilter Zahlia Wilcox (74) stitched her way to a unique and colourful bed covering - all in aid of Cansa Jeffreys Bay. Called Memories, the quilt that took three months to complete, represents the lives of past and present cancer patients.

According to Wilcox, the 30 centre squares consisting of 48 pieces pay tribute to those who lost the battle against cancer, while the smaller blocks down the two longer sides represent cancer patients who are either in remission or are receiving treatment.

The chevron pieces down the two shorter sides, celebrate all the medical personnel assisting and treating cancer patients.

All the red stitching signifies the multitude of blood transfusions cancer patients are subjected to.

The quilt is on display at Bohemian Scrapsody at Equinox Mall in Jeffreys Bay. “I decided to display the quilt at Bohemian Scrapsody to honour the late owner Annette van der Westhuizen who lost her battle against cancer earlier this year,” says Wilcox.

The quilt will be raffled off in aid of the local cancer association. Tickets cost R10 each and are available at Bohemian Scrapsody or at Wilcox at 083 285 7492.

Anthony started his working career as a school teacher at Hornlee Primary School in Knysna in 1981. A year or so later he applied for training as a male nurse at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town. “I was accepted, but could not pursue my dream due to bursary obligations.”

He taught for six years at Hornlee, but relocated to Humansdorp in January 1987 to teach Mathematics and Geography at Graslaagte Primary School. Anthony pursued a Higher Diploma in Education IV with Maths and Biology and became HOD at St Patrick’s Primary in 1996. He even acted as principal for some months, but accepted a severance package to avoid being redeployed.

For 12 years he worked in banking and at Life Isivivana Private Hospital’s Reception, loving the interaction with patients and medical staff. Though the dream of being a nurse did not die, he also could not follow up on it, and re-entered the education system in 2008.

But that is not for Anthony. He still wants to be a nurse.

“The Health Skills Course I did then was incredible, and the seven week’s practical training at Humansdorp Hospital probably the most exhilarating time in my entire working career. I felt that sense of belonging.”

WHAT started off as a small project in a couple’s backyard is now a well-established non-profit organisation, which has helped hundreds of disabled children in Nelson Mandela Bay and Uitenhage by manufacturing and distributing highquality handmade wooden disability equipment free of charge to families from impoverished backgrounds.

Timion was started in November 2006 by Swiss orthotist Daniel Meyer and his South African wife and physiotherapist Anika.

They met while working with children with disabilities in Sierra Leone and Iraq.

“Timion is a Greek word meaning ‘precious’ or ‘especially loved’.

“It is a word that also represents the heart of the NPO and its team that specialises in the holistic support of caregivers with children that have cerebral palsy,” Meyer said.

The organisation, which was started by the pair using their small bathroom as a workspace, now has a strong team of 11 members, which include professional therapists, counsellors and carpenters who work together, not only to handcraft the equipment, but also to visit the children at their homes to issue the equipment alongside supporting the families on how to help their child.

“Initially we would visit the children only at the local hospitals and clinics; however, we decided to change our approach as this kept us from knowing the real circumstances of the families.”

Meyer explained that these families live with incredible challenges, of which transport and travelling are but some of the many difficulties they thave to deal with every day.

“Taxis often charge them extra for their chil-

dren or refuse to transport the much-needed wheelchair or seating device.

“This leads to help and resources being inaccessible to the families and caregivers often have to deal with the emotional and physical weight of their child in unsupported isolation,” he said.

Timion recently hosted a 10-year anniversary celebration at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton. “The event was in celebration of what God has done in and through this ministry and to give him the glory for all that has been achieved,” Meyer said.

The anniversary also allowed a platform to look back at the last 10 years and see how Timion has grown, “from two people to a permanent staff of 11, from a bathroom as a work space to a workshop spanning seven garages and from seeing families weekly at clinics to roughly visiting six to eight homes daily.”

He pointed out, however, that the focus of the event was not the practical growth of the organisation but rather gratitude for the lives of the 1 000 plus children that the company has helped over the last 10 years.

son asked Safety and Liaison MEC Weziwe Tikana, she said out of the total of 12 896 protection order cases reported over the last three financial years, 9 334 arrests had been made and gone to court, but only 1 934 led to successful prosecution.

A total of 689 cases out of 3 215 in 2015/16, 841 out of 4 205 in 2016/17 and 404 out of the total of 1 914 court cases so far in 2017/18.

“Crimes against women and children need to receive greater priority by the SAPS. “There needs to be a rapid response to calls for help so the perpetrators of this ghastly violence know they will be nailed and jailed,” said Stevenson.

Earlier this year, the South African Demographic and Health Survey showed that close to a third (32%) of women in the Eastern Cape were victims of physical violence in a relationship, far ahead of both the national average and other provinces.

The national average is 21%.

According to Stevenson, gender-based violence is becoming an increasing phenomenon in the Eastern Cape with more and more women falling victim to violent crimes.

The Western Cape Government has taken a community-inclusive approach to preventing violence against women through the Young Women and Girls Project which is aimed at educating young girls about abuse and what action to take before the situation escalates.

Educating both men and women is a more effective approach to addressing violence against women.

“These programmes need to start in schools where attitudes are often formed,” said Stevenson.

With the theme “Count me in: Together moving a non-violent South Africa forward”, the 16-days’ campaign is a chance for all communities to reflect on the change that is needed in order for our province to prosper.

Madibaz present courses for athletes and coaches THE Bestmed Madibaz Athletics Club, in conjunction with Eastern Province Athletics, will present a much-needed series of coaching courses at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School in Uitenhage next month.

Running from January 10 to 12, the series for coaches and athletes will consist of courses in three categories, to be held simultaneously.

One will be a clinic over all three days, aimed at coaches and athletes. In additional programmes, two courses will be presented for those who aspire to become qualified coaches under Athletics South Africa.

Madibaz athletics manager Nellis Bothma said there was a strong demand for courses such as these in the Eastern Cape. The last one in the region was held in 2010.

“There is a huge need for students and teachers to be given a chance to attend courses such as these,” he said.

“In past years, they have had to attend clinics in other provinces, but now they have a chance to improve their knowledge of coaching in their own region.”

Bothma added that the Madibaz Athletics Club were working with EP Athletics to provide the opportunity for coaches to learn the latest techniques, which they could then apply to athletes at their institutions and schools.

The Bestmed Madibaz Athletics Club, in conjunction with Eastern Province athletics, will offer a number of courses for athletes and coaches at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School from January 10 to 12.

The clinic would provide 70 per cent practical knowledge and 30 per cent theoretical information, he said.

“Coaches who are not keen to do the ASA courses can attend this clinic and athletes can enter individually or come with other athletes or their coaches.”

He emphasised that the clinic was different to the coaching courses on offer.

Those who plan to attend will have to choose one of the categories – the coaching clinic or either the ASA Level 1 or ASA Level

2 coaches’ course.

“The Level 1 course is for coaches and athletes who wish to obtain a coaching certificate from ASA. It is open to everyone,” said Bothma.

The course will have four sections – jumps, throws, sprints and hurdles, and middle and long-distance running.

He said attendees were not expected to do any physical activity and coaches would receive an ASA certificate if they passed the open book exam.

Minimum requirements for the Level 2 course were having a Level 1 certificate, having coached for at least two years as a qualified Level 1 coach and having coached at least

two athletes who competed in a national championship, said Bothma.

“The Level 2 exam is more advanced and will have a pass mark of 70 per cent,” he added.

The closing date to enter for the courses is January 7.

Entries for the Level 1 and Level 2 courses must be sent to Hugo Badenhorst (hugo.badenhorst@lantic.net) and the cost is R650, plus R300 for accommodation if required.

Names for the coaching clinic must be sent to Zirk Kemp (zirkemp@yahoo.com or eniemand@danielpienaar.co.za) and the registration fee is R160 for coaches and R100 for athletes, plus R300 for accommodation if required.

The Bestmed Madibaz coaches involved in the coaching clinic will be Nico Bakkes (sprints), Leonardo de Villiers (middle-distance), Francisco de Vega (high jump), Karel Gerber (long and triple jump), Ischke Senekal (discus), Jacobus van Zyl (discus), Vernon Oosthuizen (javelin), Zirk Kemp (hurdles), Charlie Koen (hammer throw) and Nellis Bothma (co-ordinator of coaching).

The coaches for the ASA courses will be Hugo Badenhorst (jumps and theory), Gerrie Posthumus (sprints), Juan Strydom (hurdles), Marna van der Merwe (throws) and Ilse Wicksell (middle and long-distance).

Final aQuellé Ocean Racing Series for the year HOBIE Beach will be a buzz of activity on Sunday morning as the final round of this year’s aQuellé Ocean Racing Series takes place from 9am. An estimation of close to 500 participants are expected to take part in what has fast become Africa’s largest family beach event, an event which is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay.

Participants can select from any one of the seven events on offer which include a 5km beach run, 5km beach walk, kids 1km beach run and a 400m, 1km, 2km or 3km ocean swim.

Home-run donation for Kouga schools BASEBALL development in Kouga got a shot in the arm with a donation of the sport’s equipment to three local primary schools by a Cape Town-based sports academy and Major League Baseball South Africa.

The schools are Mzingisi, Makukhanye and Pellsrus Primary Schools.

The donation came about through a Facebook contact between local resident Thanduxolo “Lefty” Ndabambi, African Sport Training Academy executive member Sharon Siljeur and her sport enthusiast husband Roderick.

The Siljeurs are originally from Kouga and have a home in Jeffreys Bay and did not hesitate to contact Ndabambi who declared an interest in the sport and left his details on their Facebook page.

They facilitated the involvement of Edwin Bennett who is the Development Manager for SA Major League Baseball who donated half of the items.

The kit includes helmets, balls, bats and catching equipment. There are tees as well

for their younger children.

Speaking at the handover of the equipment at the municipal headquarters in Jeffreys Bay Sharon said even though ASTA was based in Cape Town, they could not let an opportunity to make a difference pass them by.

“We are about teaching children life skills, talent identification and nurturing and our ultimate goal is to create Olympians,” she said.

The Siljeurs are planning to come relocate to Kouga after Roderick’s retirement next year.

“We will continue helping with the development of the sport, helping in building capacity in coaching and manage as we are accredited training provides,” said Sharon.

Social Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson said, “We are happy that we are now adding to the diverse range of sporting codes and we are starting at grassroots level.

“Though this provides a challenge for us as a municipality, as we do not have typical baseball fields, we will be happy to be part of the development of the sport in our area,” he said.

The Par 3 Amazing Race, organised by the Kromme Enviro-Trust, is set to take over St Francis Links at 08:00 on December 18.

Do you think you could play a Par 3 hole with just a putter, or just a driver? This is the day to find out. Some very nice single malt is on the cards too, if you can land your ball on one or two of the harder greens. You also get a quiz question on the environment on every hole. Here is where the kids come in: they must look for clues to the answers.

This is the second year of the Par 3 Amazing Race, and last year’s entrants are signing up as quickly as they can. Basil Barry played in 2016 and he says, “The golf was fun, but the treasure hunt and quiz was even more fun.

The food on the course was great.”

Food on the course? Turns out that there is no halfway stop - it’s a shotgun start -so something tasty like pizza or cookies or fish nuggets is served up on every third hole. And there are snacks afterwards, so no one is going home hungry.
