Steep water prices now in effect RESIDENTS are reminded that the price of water increases steeply from this week. An urgent call has also gone out to all consumers to cut back water usage by 25%. Kouga Mayor Elza van Lingen said the implementation of the higher charges - Part C of the municipality’s tariff structure – was approved by Council at the end of May. The Council also declared a local state of disaster at the same meeting because of the prolonged drought and looming water shortages. Water restrictions and Part B (critical but not emergency) water tariffs have been in place in Kouga municipal since December 2016. Van Lingen said Kouga had further been instructed by the national Department of Water and Sanitation to cut back its water consumption by 25% because dam levels had reached critical levels. “If good rains don’t fall in the catchment areas soon, we are heading for a disaster that will have far-reaching

negative implications for the region as a whole,” she said. “We call on all residents and business to save water urgently. Every drop counts.” She said an emergency action plan, aimed at conserving and increasing the water supply, would be tabled to Council in August. “Emergency measures will include increasing consumer education and the sinking of additional boreholes, the recycling of waste water and the construction of a desalination plant. “With the disaster declaration having been gazetted, we are now also in a position to apply for funding assistance from provincial and national government to implement the emergency measures.” The implementation of emergency tariffs and call for water consumption to be reduced by at least 25% are also in effect in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. Kouga purchases most of its water for domestic use from the Metro, which manages the dams on behalf of the Department of Water and Sanitation.

per bevestig die man is oorlede.” Die man se lyk is in hul sorg gelaat.” Kapt.

Shop manager robbed by armed men THE South African Police in Humansdorp urge business owners and managers in the area to refrain from carrying large sums of cash in the town. This warning follows after a shop manager was robbed just before 10:00 on Saturday morning by three armed men in the Main Street, Humansdorp. The manager was underway to a financial institution to deposit an undisclosed amount of cash.

Three suspects fled on foot after robbing him of the cash. The acting Station Commander of Humansdorp, Lt Col Dries Landman, requested owners and managers of businesses to consider using the services of a cash management company and to alternate the days and times on which they deposit cash. Police investigations are continuing.

When in operation, a massive aquafarm cylinder will require a crew of only three to four people. It can also be remotely operated. They commenced with this project in 2017 and will be in full operation in 2018.

groot verloorders. Vir meer inligting, skakel Kindersorg Humansdorp by 042 295 2880.

AN ART FORM, THERAPY AND SOCIAL GLUE

Quilting: Love in every stitch MONIQUE BASSON

the decorative stuff. Each square has a story. “Although it is tedious work, each stitch is made with love. A quilt is love. It is a way of passing down love. “Usually by the time I have almost finished with a quilt, I am already thinking about the next one. “Each quilt project is different and the cost depends on the size of the project, as well as what a person wants on a quilt. The quilts I make are meant to be used and it not only for show.” She says completing a quilt still leaves her feeling elated after all these years.

STACK and wack. Basting. Binding. Sashing. Square up. Stitch in the ditch. Applique. Cross hatch. Four-patch block. And yes, a UFO. These words reflect prolific quilter Zahlia Wilcox’s (74) threading passion for quilting. She stitches her way to unique bed coverings that keep her warm in more ways than one. All thanks to a book about patchwork some 40 years ago. A hobby just for grandmas? Think again. The vibrant Wilcox is a far cry from the stereotyped image of a little grandma sitting in a rocking chair sewing pieces of fabric together. “I am not old. I have been 28 years for many years and still have a lot of life left in me and countless years to live life to the fullest.” Where it all started With a lifelong artistic impulse fuelling her creative endeavours, Wilcox became excited about diving into the art of quilting after discovering a book about patchwork some four decades ago. Trying her hand at patchwork for five years, Wilcox joined a quilting workshop presented by a professional quilter from Canada. After her first attempt, she was hooked. Quite to her surprise, although she grew up with needles and threads, she was never able to master the art of sewing herself. “My mother, a perfectionist and wonderful seamstress who made everything herself, would be thrilled to see me doing this,” says Wilcox. Passion Her house is a showroom of sorts, with completed quilts in a variety of sizes and colours and pillows accenting her seating. And of course, her bed is dressed in one of her quilts she made 30 years ago. So are the other two beds in her house. However, there is one room that stands out - her sanctuary, her happy place. Filled with endless pieces of fabric - some already cut out in different shapes, others waiting to form part of an artwork - this room is dedicated to her passion. A sewing desk takes up an entire wall. She gently traces with her fingertip the pattern of a piece of work in progress, “I get all excited when I touch the material.” Her eyes sparkle when the conversation shifts to the significance of quilting. “While there are some similarities and a

Avid quilter Zahlia Wilcox (right) from Jeffreys Bay made this beautiful quilt for the local SPCA to be raffled out to raise funds. With the dedicated assistance of Bohemian Scrapsody at Equinox Mall, some R6 000 were raised. The winner of the quilt is Michelle van Rooyen (middle) from Jeffreys Bay. She receives her prize from SPCA Humansdorp Inspector Benjamin Sithole (left) and Wilcox. Want a quilt? Then do not miss the annual Jeffreysrus bazaar on the first Saturday in October where one of Wilcox’s quilts will be raffled off. few old-fashioned techniques still in play, quilting has become much more sophisticated with the use of a computer, gillions of patterns and fabrics. “I usually work on more than one project

at a time. A typical quilt from start to finish can take anything between two weeks and seven months to complete. The most tedious part is cutting shapes and sizes and sewing them together. The fun part begins when you do all

Spreading the love Spreading her love for quilting, Wilcox started a social group at her house that meets every Monday. The only prerequisite is that those attending must crochet, quilting or do needle work. “As a craft, quilting, and needlework for that matter, bring people together. Not just in the physical sense, but in an emotional and spiritual way that can’t be measured or quantified,” she says. From passion to charity Quilts she has completed - all for charity - include the Pony Express, the Disappearing Nine Patch, the Letter from my Beloved, and Jacobs Ladder. Wilcox laughs. “And then there are the UFO’s - the dreaded unfinished objects.” Her latest creation was raffled off in aid of the local SPCA and some R5 000 were raised. “All thanks to the hard work of the personnel at Bohemian Scrapsody at Equinox Mall,” says Wilcox. Connie du Preez, Zelda Koegellenberg and owner Annette van der Westhuizen did a sterling job in selling the bulk of the raffle tickets. Without their help, we would not have been able to raise much-needed funds.” Most of her quilts are in aid of charity: Choc, Hospice, SPCA, and churches. Her latest creation, called the Disappearing Nine Patch, will be raffled off at the annual Jeffreysrus bazaar on the first Saturday in October. Wilcox only takes R500 from the money raised to help her pay for the material for her next quilt. She does not charge for the labour and love that goes into each quilt. “Quilting is both a passion and addiction, but I would not have it any other way,” says Wilcox who is leaving a legacy one stitch at a time. To share in her passion, contact Wilcox at 083 285 7492.

Trash to Trends: Take in the trash at GLA’s fashion extravaganza MONIQUE BASSON FOR one night a year, the trashier you look the better: at the annual Global Leadership Academy (GLA) fashion show and night market set to take place on September 8. Sporting upcycled recycled outfits ranging from street-style to country couture made from everyday trash, the show promises to be a fun-filled event for the whole family. The designers and models will not only create fashion and art, but they will also learn the importance of recycling and the value of the environment while showing their families and friends in attendance how much fun it can be to reduce, reuse and recycle. Outfits and accessories must be made from recycled material only: business cards, packaging material, garbage bags, bottle caps, plastic bottles, tin cans, bubble wrap, or string.

An environmental sign made from recycled materials must be added to each dress or handbag. The categories are junior primary (1 - 8 years), senior primary (9 - 13 years), high school (14 - 18 years), and open (19 years and older). Designers, who piece together exotic outfits from a wide and wild variety of recyclable materials, will compete for several cash prizes, including the Public’s Favourite Award. Other prizes will be awarded for the most original dress, the entrant with the most vibrant personality, and the most creative accessories. The entry fee is R500 per dress. Food stalls will be available. The doors open at 18:00 and the models will begin strutting the runway at 19:00. For more information or to book a stall at R100 per stall, contact Lizette Kemps at 082 323 4491 or send an email to kemplizette@yahoo.com.

Enjoy gourmet food and good wine picturesque South African West Coast, nestled in the Darling Hills. The Estate looms over the icy Atlantic Ocean at altitudes of up to 350m above sea level. Located a mere 4km from the ocean, the sea breeze graces the vineyards with coolness and moisture. This ensures ideal conditions for preserving flavour and acidity on the estate’s whites, but also moderate summer temperatures, extending the growth season, producing reds with depth and intensity. Adré Rheeder, viticulturist with twenty years of experience, oversees the estate’s vineyards. He regularly addresses challenges presented by wind and the steep slopes on which the vines are planted on. The small dry land grape bunches are all handpicked into small crates and transported to the modern gravity based cellar, strategically built in the centre of the estate’s vineyards. Here third generation proprietor Theo Basson pours his passion into each bottle bearing the Ormonde seal of approval. He places great emphasis on primary varietal character to allow the unique terroir to be expressed in every wine. The most recent award was presented to the Grenache 2015 from the Ondine range of speciality cultivars. This wine was announced National winner in its class at the SA Terroir awards, once again earning confirmation that the unique style from this small appellation is appreciated and rewarded. On arrival, diners will be treated to pork belly and cucumber skewer, paired with Ondine Chenin Blanc 2015. The second course is bacon, pumpkin and tomato soup, paired with Ondine Sauvignon Blanc 2014. Kingklip cigars with apricot chutney and smoked paprika mayonnaise will tantalise the taste buds. This course will be paired with Ondine Chardonnay 2014. For the fourth course, diners can look forward to a pasta tower filled with braised venison and a green peppercorn sauce that will be accompanied by Ondine Grenache 2015. Then it is time for surf and turf: saffron infused calamari and seared rump with patata brava. Ormonde Chip off the old Block Merlot and Ondine Pinot Noir 2015 will be served with the course. This will be followed by fallen ice cream with dark chocolate and Ormonde Chip of the old Block Cabernet Sauvignon. The evening will come to an end with a cheese platter. The cost is R300 per person. More hands needed for beach cleanup WESSA Algoa Bay branch invites the public to a beach clean-up at Cape Recife on Saturday from 9.30am to 10.30am. Efforts will be combined with SANCCOB (the old SAMREC) Little Blues Club beach clean-up. To get to the area where the clean-up will be held, coming from Summerstrand, you turn left off Marine Drive towards Pine Lodge. Drive past Pine Lodge and stop at the boom which is the entrance to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve. Tell the security person there that you are participating in the WESSA/SANCCOB

beach clean-up. Drive to the SANCCOB parking area and park. There will be someone there to direct you when you arrive. If you park at SANCCOB, you will not need a permit to enter the reserve. If you drive beyond SANCCOB, you will need to obtain a permit. This will be WESSA Algoa Bay’s fifth cleanup this year and the public’s assistance is crucial in this matter. TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA

I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life, My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Fordyce to kick off first JBay parkrun Fordyce. “I am looking forward to visiting Jeffreys Bay for the first time.” Event Director Ron Miles (74), who has already completed 77 parkruns, and volunteer Michelle Ohlhoff (36) are the driving force behind the Jeffreys Bay parkrun. Miles made park run history when he, his son Greg Miles, and grandson Robert Miles won their respective age categories at the inaugural Lady Slipper parkrun. The parkrun was attended by over 400 participants. The 5km route consists of a mixture of grass and trail running around the perimeter of ravine bush before circumnavigating a large dam at the bottom of the ravine. Compared to a typical running event, parkrun has money advantages. “It does not cost participants any money,” says Miles. “There are no registration fees or licence numbers. It is open to all ages and takes place in a safe environment. Off-road prams are also welcome. Runners need not belong to a club. “We expect some 500 participants to attend the inaugural event.”

MONIQUE BASSON NINE-time Comrades Marathon champion Bruce Fordyce will kick off the first sociable, hassle-free and open-to-all Jeffreys Bay park-

run at Global Leadership Academy (GLA) at 08:00 on August 12. “Í am delighted that Jeffreys Bay is joining the international parkrun community,” says

Taking part To take part, log onto the parkrun website www.parkrun.co.za - and register. A barcode will be issued, which can be used at any parkrun event, anywhere in the world. The barcodes are used to log data and they help participants to track their progress and challenge their previous best time. Results are posted to the parkrun website and are also sent by SMS. “Volunteers play a pivotal role in parkrun, helping with scanning, timing and marshalling,” says Miles. It is about enjoyment Miles says, “It is about enjoyment, and then there is a huge community spirit to it too. “People look forward to seeing each other every Saturday. It is all about people getting together and it works all around the world.” The Jeffreys Bay parkrun is 5km and takes place at GLA at 08:00 every Saturday morning. For more information, contact Miles at 083 654 7676. Alternatively, visit www.parkrun.co.za.

Standard Bank 5150 Triathlon returns to the Bay FOLLOWING the huge success of last year’s inaugural race, the Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay returns to the Friendly City for a second time. Set to take place at Kings Beach on December 3 this year, online entries are already open. Home to the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship, the 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay saw just over 600 athletes at the start of the debut race last year. The 5150 triathlon (pronounced, fifty-onefifty) takes the format of an Olympic distance triathlon featuring a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle

crossed the finish line first, setting the course time at 02:03:06. Setting the tone for the women’s field, the well-known amateur age group athlete Kelly van der Toorn was the fastest female on the day in a time of 02:18:37. Besides the Olympic distance, this year’s event will see the introduction of the new Funtri distance. The Funtri is a shorter distance, especially designed to give the younger, first-time athlete a glimpse into the spectacular tri-world. Featuring a 400-metre swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, the Funtri sets the scene for a fast-paced individual race. The same Funtri

and 10km run. Widely regarded as an ideal introduction distance into competitive triathlon, it is also a favourite among fans of the Port Elizabeth based Corporate Triathlon Challenge competitors. The Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay course starts with a 1.5km sea swim at Kings Beach, leading into a 40km out and back bike route on Marine Drive, ending the race with a 10km run along the beachfront. Last year Port Elizabeth-born athlete and runner-up at this year’s Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban, Jeren Seegers,

distance also welcomes team entries from athletes 15 years and older. For more information and to enter visit www.ironman.com/5150nelsonmandelabay.
