DAY ZERO APPROACHING FAST

Kouga residents to pray for water again KOUGA community members are desperately praying for rain. A second mass prayer meeting will take place at the Kouga Dam Resort from 10:00 to 13:00 on Sunday. Religious leaders from the Gamtoos Valley area are planning to start their pilgrimage to the Kouga Dam on Friday for daily prayers, until the mass gathering of Sunday. This follows a mass prayer meeting that was held at the Dolphin Beach Amphitheatre last Sunday afternoon. The meetings are organised and coordinated by community leaders, community organisations and business fraternities, while the sermons and prayers are led by local

The water scarcity is not only affecting domestic use, but businesses as well, which may have a devastating impact in terms of jobs. KOUGA MAYOR ELZA VAN LINGEN ministers. All residents are welcome to attend.

The water levels at the dams supplying Kouga are critically low and the possibility of Day Zero arriving sooner than initially anticipated, is fast becoming a reality. Day Zero is a period where the municipality would no longer be able to provide water through the taps and residents would have to go to central points to collect water in rationed quantities. Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says it was great to see the community united in these very difficult times, with everyone seeking to play a role to secure water. “While we are busy, as a municipality, searching for more water sources, it is encouraging to see our communities holding hands and doing their bit for us to have more

water. “The water scarcity is not only affecting domestic use, but businesses as well, which may have a devastating impact in terms of jobs.” Van Lingen adds that while the municipality is busy searching for more water sources and prayers went up for rains to fall, it is important that residents save every drop of water they can. As part of its efforts, the municipality has been drilling boreholes and conducting geophysics tests for more drilling. A municipal delegation recently travelled to Israel to learn from world specialists about the possibility of having desalination plants as part of long term plans.

levels across the province drop drastically, with Kouga and numerous towns at risk of running out of water. The Kouga Municipality has already indicated that at least two towns, Hankey and Patensie, face water shedding, while the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is considering further punitive water restrictions. The combined dam capacity of the Algoa water supply system, which supplies the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and surrounds, has dropped to its lowest ever level of just 25.6%, dropping 0.7% in a week. The largest dam of the Algoa water supply system is the Kouga dam, which has dropped to a mere 7.9% of its total capacity. This is the lowest level ever recorded for the dam, which is the key supply dam for the Kouga Municipality and surrounding farmers. Last year this time, it was 44.6% full. Nothing on Day Zero yet The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said nothing has been confirmed yet around Day Zero - the day the dams run dry. In a statement last month, the municipality said current water consumption could see the city’s dams run dry by August, while the SA Weather Service was forecasting significant rains only in October. This would leave the Metro dependent on the Nooitgedacht Scheme, which supplies about half of the city’s water. The scheme sources water from the Gariep Dam, through the Sundays River Valley. “There are serious discussions within infrastructure

and engineering led by mayoral committee member, Councillor Masixolo Zinto, in relation to the current dam levels and the implications they bring,” said municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki. Towns exceed allocated quotas Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said the towns of Hankey and Patensie had just about used up their water quotas for the financial year, ending in June. “The latest readings in December indicated that Hankey had only 9% of its quota left and Patensie 36%,” she said. Hankey and Patensie both receive their bulk raw water from the Gamtoos government water scheme, which is administered by the Gamtoos Irrigation Board. The scheme includes the Kouga Dam and the downstream canal system. Alternative water solutions sought Van Lingen said the Kouga Municipality was working around the clock, trying to secure more water sources for its residents. “Three new boreholes were drilled at Oyster Bay. The yield, at about two litres per second, is low, but this assisted the town in coping with the holiday influx,” she said. The town has two existing boreholes and a spring and does not rely on Nelson Mandela Bay-controlled dams for supply. Van Lingen said they were drilling two new boreholes in Jeffreys Bay while one was being rehabilitated. She said the municipality was also investigating desalination as an option to solve the water crisis facing Kouga, and would be appointing a consultant shortly to assist.

Resident peevish over mouldy bread MONIQUE BASSON A Jeffreys Bay shopper was left disgusted after realising the bread he had just bought was mouldy - and this was not the first time. According to an irate Arno Crous, he purchased an 800g Sasko Low GI Whole Wheat Brown Dumpy bread at a leading supermarket on January 11 - two days before the expiry date, only to discover that the bread is mouldy on his arrival home. “This is not the first time,” says Crous. “I have been experiencing this problem for more than two years. “Initially we just dumped the bread as it was too much of an inconvenience to return the bread to the supermarket. “I then decided to complain to Pioneer Foods directly. They apologised for the inconvenience caused and included some vouchers.” However, according to Crous, this does not compensate for the inconvenience caused and travel time and cost to the store and back. “A permanent and workable solution must be found,” he says. Pioneer Foods Group Manager Communications Deborah-Ann Sharwood says, “The product in question is produced from a higher

moisture content batter dough. “Whilst this differentiates the product from other every day conventional dough bread in terms of texture, the higher water content increases the risk of mould growth - especially in periods of high heat.” According to Sharwood, the Dumpy products are manufactured in Cape Town and have to travel all the way to the Eastern Cape. “The product could therefore be exposed to excessive heat en route, at the retail store or even at the consumer’s home, which unfortunately may result in mould before expiry date. We therefore advise consumers through communication on the back of the pack, to store the bread in a cool dry place and that this type of product is also suitable for freezing. Store the whole loaf, or even slices that can then be thawed later as required. “It goes without saying that Pioneer Foods would never want to disappoint a customer or consumer. If any of our products do, however, not live up to expectation, we would greatly value such feedback through contacting our consumer care service on 0800 2212 360 or consumercare@pioneerfoods.co.za. This will not only enable correction of the unfortunate experience as best as possible, but also provide valuable information in order to prevent a repeat occurrence in future.”

THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is set to relocate the Joubertina local office. The office, which is currently located in Main Street, will move to Kareedouw on January 31 - giving hundreds of locals only a few days to comply with the shift from cards to bank accounts. According to Sandy Godlwana, Senior Manager of Communication and Marketing for SASSA Eastern Cape, the relocation was prompted by the low intake of SASSA beneficiaries in Joubertina in comparison to that in Kareedouw. “We furthermore received a plot from the KouKamma Municipality which will enable us to save on rental costs and improve efficiency.” Joubertina will be serviced weekly as a counter service point.

Farm school plays their part to save water DE Miskraal Primary School, a farm school near Patensie, is playing its part in saving water as the drought intensifies - severely affecting the farming community. The school, boasting 220 learners, makes use of basins to wash their hands. The water is changed at intervals. The “dirty” water is then reused to water the school garden. For drinking, every class has its own bucket and a cup is used to ensure no drop goes to waste. Principal Martie de Beer says it is important that everyone at the school understands the seriousness of water scarcity.

“We are preaching the message every day for the learners to internalise the severity of the drought and for them to be key participants in saving water. “One tends to not realise how much water goes to waste when hands are washed using running water from the tap, especially where children are involved.” Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen praises the school for their efforts and says there is a lesson to be learned. “The situation requires all of us to make a conscious effort to save water as we are moving into a critical phase of water scarcity, and we do not know when the much needed rains will fall,” says Van Lingen.

Christmas lights shine brightly for JBay ARS The annual colourful Christmas display of Clive and Elmarie Husband and Gert and Beulah Scheepers from Anaboom Crescent in Wavecrest, Jeffreys Bay, brought in a whopping R19 247.19 donated by locals and visitors. Locals and visitors furthermore donated dog and cat food. The money and food were donated to the JBay Animal Rescue Sanctu ary. The money will be used to sterilise dogs and cats in the area. The driving force behind this year’s initiative are Miggie Cloete, Johan Deysel, Beulah and Gert Scheepers, Elmarie and Clive Husband, and Irma Morris. Johan played Father Christmas for the duration of the display.

Die ATKV in Jeffreysbaai het onlangs hul nuwe bestuur aangewys: Willie Louw (ondervoorsitter), Magda le Roux (sekretaresse), Christie Dorfling (tesourier), Elda Kruger (ATKV streekverteenwoordiger), Slabbert Theron (voorsitter) en Koos Gelderblom (addisionele lid). FOTO:VER SKAF

100% RESULTS OF MONEY BACK! TRUE MIRACLE OF ASEMBE To everyone who has serious financial problems, I am assuring you that to be born poor is not your mistake but if you die poor and leave your family suffering that is a big mistake. My number is 0835265579 I have been reading testimonies from different people thanking Asembe for changing their lives. He made them rich mainly with MAGIC WALLET that lots of people are using to get money everyday and weekly & they then pay back a weekly amount to Asembe. There is a lot of people with testimonies about Magic Wallet. I was on the verge of a financial breakdown because of fake prophets, doctors, herbalists & sangomsa that I have consulted before but they kept on asking more money without any results. I chose the short boys from Asembe to put money in my account, I was also 100% sure that he was going to help me just like the way he has helped a lot of other people. He promised me that the money will be in my account the next day. I was so suprised in the morning when I received a bank sms. I went to withdraw the money and paid him 40% from that money. I am now an independent woman, I started my transport business using the money form Asembe. My husband is also planning to start his own business after getting RATS from Asembe to put money in the house. Dont lose hope, I promise you, no matter how deep your financial problems are take a chance & call Asembe & he will help you with the best results. He also specialises with LOTTO, my friend won the lotto through lucky numbers given by Asembe & paid 30% to him. Dont waste your time. Just Call Asembe to make you rich & successful CALL 073 679 2509

‘Fuel price relief expected SOUTH African motorists can look forward to a bit more relief on the first Wednesday in February, with fuel prices set to drop again.

SPECIAL THANKS TO PROF KULA Lizzelle 46yrs from Graaff Reinet, thank you Prof Kula for helping my family, my son was a drug & alcohol addict for yrs & I tried a lot of healers and prophets but all failed until I saw Prof Kula's advert in the newspaper. He came to our house and performed his spiritual prayers which chased away all evil and demons which was destroying my family. Prof Kula used his magic rats & short boys to bring money into our house that same night. With his powerful miracles he prayed for us and our marriage is better now and peaceful. All thanks to Prof Kula again. Please contact him should you have any problems. You pay after the job has been completed successfully or visit him in Port Elizabeth. Call or Whatsapp 063 383 6452

This is according to the Automobile Association (AA) which was commenting on mid-month fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund. The association attributed the continued positive balance shown by the fund to the unusual but welcome stability of the rand against the US dollar since the last week of December. “The Rand/US dollar exchange rate has had one of its flattest periods of trading in recent times,” the AA said. “It has traded in a very narrow band between R12.30 and R12.40 to the US currency since the last week of December, bringing some welcome stability.” The association also noted that the international prices of petrol and diesel were also stable over the same period, although there was a slight climb in both in the second week of January. “The current data predicts a decrease in petrol of nearly 41 cents a litre, with diesel down by 23 cents and illuminating paraffin dropping 26 cents,” the AA said. The price drop for fuel next month will come after a decrease this month,

following five consecutive months of increases at the end of last year. “Continued stability in fuel prices for 2018 will largely depend on political and economic factors which affect South Africa’s attractiveness as an investment destination,” the Association concluded.

South Africans are looking forward to another drop in the fuel price next month, following the numerous increases that occurred last year. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

100% GEWAARBORG OF JOU GELD TERUG

Ek is Lerato.

JBay local nabs first SEAT Pro victory LOCAL surfer, Matthew McGillivray (20), won the prestigious SEAT Pro in Netanya, Israel, in shifty 1.0 to 1.5 metre surf - defeating Charly Martin from France. Presented by Reef, the first World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 3 000 rated event of 2018, unfolded in great conditions over the ten days of the event’s waiting period, culminating on January 20 with McGillivray’s victory. “This feels amazing,” says McGillivray who competed in the QS for the third year. “I have put in a lot of hard work, and it feels amazing to finally get a win.” He had an incredible run from round one through to the final, scoring seven heat totals above 14 points. This includes a near-perfect 18.33 in the semi-finals to eliminate one of the strongest surfers this week, California’s Kei Kobayashi. This victory marks McGillivray’s first on the Qualifying Series and will see him take the number one spot on the QS rankings before the next leg of events, already underway in Australia. In the final, Martin opened with a little tube ride and a good turn for a 6.5 to turn an early lead on the heat. Ten minutes in, the surfers

took off on back-to-back waves, each surfing a similar right breaking wave with a massive first turn and a couple of follow-up manoeuvres. McGillivray got the nod with a 7.2 over Martin’s 6.9. The South African continued to build his tally with a big forehand rotation to post an excellent 8.33 and take the lead. Despite many efforts, Martin couldn’t come back from this blow and ended runner-up. Final 1. Matthew McGillivray (ZAF) 15.53 2. Charly Martin (FRA) 13.93 Semi-final 1.
