Anneli Young celebrating women PASSIONATE photographer, wife, mom of three and musician, Anneli Young from Anneli Young Photography in Patensie is celebrating local women this month. Every year in August, it being Women’s Month and Young’s birthday on Women’s Day, she strives to do something special for women from all walks of life. This year she decided to focus on the community she lives in by paying tribute to the ordinary women doing extraordinary things. Celebrating women “I live in the most amazing part of the Eastern Cape, the Gamtoos Valley,” says Young. “It is home to a large number of inspirational and passionate women doing incredible things, but who not always get the chance to be in the limelight.” Wanting to change that, Young embarked on a special project at the beginning of August. She not only captures them on film, but also with their inspirational story which she then posts on her blog. “I decided to do this project and feature these amazing women of my valley, to tell the world about them and their businesses, about their aspirations and dreams, but most importantly, to inspire other women in the process,” says Young. “I believe in love. I believe in inspiration. I believe in Me. And so should every woman. Write an article about yourself, for yourself, and find out what makes you an amazing woman. We are all worthy of an article. “Although it took me a while to figure out what success means, I see myself as a successful woman. “Success is feeling worth it. The moment I accepted that I am worthy, the moments I ac-

cepted me with all my flaws and insecurities as enough, I started to grow and to achieve. I reached so many of my personal goals and I feel that I can inspire other women through what I do.” Young says after starting the project, she received several messages from readers telling her that they had never known about some of these women and what they were doing in the community. “I have quite a number of articles left to publish and I am sure that this project is going to spill over into September,” she says. Keep a Dream Alive Young recently joined the Keep a Dream Alive project that was started by a group of photographers. The aim of the project is to visit as many schools as possible and reach out to Grade 7 learners by taking photos of them dressed as who they aspire to be one day. “They receive their photos to inspire them to dream big and make a success of their lives,” says Young. “We had already visited two schools and the feedback is amazing.” They are currently looking for sponsors to make this an ongoing project. Apart from the printing cost, they want to provide a meal to each person they photograph.

Beauty is you.” To celebrate this inner beauty, Young annually holds a special and more affordable boudoir session during Women’s Month leaving women feeling beautiful. “They realise that somewhere inside of them is a great woman. A woman that is more often than not put aside in the mad rush of being a mom and wife. “Women so often neglect to spend time on themselves. “These sessions give them one morning to have their hair and make up done and spend time just exploring that inner beauty again, whether the images are for their husbands, or just for themselves.”

Robbed in seconds: Car-jammers strike at Equinox A Jeffreys Bay woman fell victim to possible car-jammers at Equinox Mall in Jeffreys Bay at around 12:00 on Friday, August 18. According to the victim, she went to Equinox Mall on Friday after picking up her son’s school bag from school to buy a few necessities. Upon returning to her vehicle, a white Toyota Fortuner, all the valuables were removed.

“I am 100% sure that I locked my car,” she says. In the CCTV footage of the incident, the victim is seen parking her car at the shopping centre and walking inside. ‘MY GEBREK DEFINIEER MY NIE’

Om ‘anders’ én sterk te wees

Hy is met ’n afwyking gebore wat die normale ontwikkeling van sy onderbene en voete beperk, maar Juandré Ellis van Jeffreysbaai laat hom nie van stryk bring nie en spog met ’n geelbelt vir gemengde vegkuns, skryf Monique Basson.

JUANDRÉ Ellis (14) was selfbewus, onseker, misplaas en humeurig – en sonder maatjies. Ander het hom laat glo hy is afstootlik en hy is dikwels verneder. Dít omdat hy anders lyk. Sy oplossing? Sy vuiste. Maar dit het dinge net vererger. Hy was in opstand teen alles en almal, selfs teen God. Met gebalde vuiste wat genadeloos op sy stompies neerreën, wou hy weet hoekom hy so gestraf word. Hy wil net normaal wees. Hy wil net iewers inpas en maatjies hê. Toe kom die groot kopskuif. Beperk normale ontwikkeling Juandré, ’n gr. 7-leerling van JBay Academy, in Jeffreysbaai, is sonder fibulas in sy onderbene gebore. Dié aangebore afwesigheid van die langbeen (genoem fibulêre hemimelia) beperk die normale ontwikkeling van sy onderbene en voete. Hy het slegs drie tone aan elke voet en het onderskeidelik 50% en 80% van die voetbeentjies in sy linker- en regtervoet. Sy linkervoet trek op ’n knop na bo. Selfs die koop van skoene is ’n proses: Sy linkervoet pas in ’n nr.2-skoen, terwyl sy regtervoet ’n nr. 3 volstaan. Enige skoen werk ook nie. Die agterkant moet bo die enkel wees. En met die skeeftrappery hou sy skoene net drie maande. Dan begin die gesoek en dubbelkopery van voor af. Sy ma, Natashja (42), onthou hoe bekommerd, bang en verward sy was omdat sy niemand met hierdie gestremdheid geken het nie. “Ná ’n moeilike geboorte was die nuus van sy afwyking ’n groot skok. Hoewel die 27-weke- sonar aangedui het dat sy kop en bobeen met ’n maand verskil, is die afwyking nie tydens swangerskap opgetel nie. “Maar ons was vasbeslote om hom so normaal en onafhanklik as moontlik groot te maak. Ons het hom van kleins af geleer dat die woorde “ek kan nie” nie bestaan nie.”

Die groot kopskuif Totaal hulpeloos en verkleineer deur die vloedgolf spottery het hy vrede daarmee gemaak dat hy nooit normaal sal wees nie. Maar toe kry hy ’n manier om homself te beskerm. Gemengde vegkuns. Juandré het hom in September verlede jaar by Raptors Mixed Martial Arts in Jeffreysbaai aangesluit. Sensei Buks Coetzee en sy opgeleide span het hom dadelik onder hul vlerk geneem. Dit was nie altyd maklik nie. Sy linkervoet het gou van die direkte impak op die vloer seergeraak, maar met gereelde oefening het dit verander. Juandré lag: “Die eelte het net harder geword.” Hy het onlangs 80% vir sy gradering gekry, en spog nou met ’n geelbelt. “Dit is die eerste keer dat ek 80% kry. Ek het baie hard gewerk.” Vir Juandré was die nuwe uitdaging lewensveranderend. “Dit het my gedwing om ’n mate van selfvertroue en dissipline te ontwikkel. Ek het meer tuis in my eie vel begin voel. Vir die eerste keer het ek besef dat my gebrek my nie definieer nie. “Mettertyd het ek geleer dat ek wel iets het om te bied waarin ander belangstel – ekself. Hulle het toe anders teenoor my begin optree, want ek het regte vriende.” Hoewel sy gesig nog soms van donderwolke gloei, is sy woedeuitbarstings en bakleiery iets van die verlede. Vandag is hy die een wat leerlinge uitmekaarhaal as hulle baklei. “Ek vat die een so agter sy hempskraag en hou die ander een daai kant met my hand teen sy bors,” wys hy hande in die lug. Natashja sê Raptors was die eerste wat haar seun ’n regverdige kans gegee het. “Hulle het in hom raakgesien wat ander misgekyk het.”

Min speeltyd In sy eerste twee jaar was daar baie min speeltyd. Dit was die een hospitaalbesoek ná die ander: Sewe spesialiste oor die hele Suid-Afrika het hom binne die eerste ses maande van sy jong lewe ondersoek. Toe begin die korrektiewe osteotomieë en beenverlengingchirurgie – ’n lewenslange proses. Op tweejarige ouderdom het hy sy eerste groot operasie ondergaan. Met 38 ure van narkose op sy kerfstok kort voor sy sesde verjaardag, is Juandré se haksenings gerek, sy voete gedraai en sy bene gebreek om dit te verleng. Hy moes ses maande in titaniumringe deurbring om sy bene 6 cm te rek. Die ringe, wat elke dag 4 mm gedraai moes word, het hom egter nie gekeer om die hele huis voel te beweeg nie. Hy het een van sy speelvragmotortjies as sy “voete” ingespan, en op en af in die huis rondgery. Hy het selfs vir wheelies en donuts kans gesien. En elke keer wanneer ’n skroef los was, het hy met die nr. 10-moersleutel die gang af gerol sodat sy ma dit kan stywer stel. Die lorrie het ’n maand nadat die titaniumringe afgehaal is, gebreek. Boelie Saam met die operasies en grootword het die jare lange gespot van die kinders gekom. ’n Diep hartseer verskyn vlugtig op Natashja se gesig. “Juandré het elke dag in trane by die huis gekom. Ek het hom dikwels op die vloer gekry waar hy besig was om sy voete met sy vuiste te kap. So asof hy dit kon beter maak as hy dit net hard genoeg kon slaan. “Hy wou by my weet hoekom het die Here hom so gestraf en hoekom kan hy nie normaal wees nie.” Die geterg het tot woede-uitbarstings en bakleiery gelei. Hy wou alles met sy vuiste regmaak. Sy humeur was so vlambaar dat hy vandag nog vir woedebestuurklasse moet gaan. “Hy het ’n lelike haat in hom gehad. Tot onlangs toe.” Juandré glimlag skewemond: “Ek onthou nog elke liewe naam wat hulle my toegesnou het. Sonder om te dink het hulle dit op my vasgeplak. “En moenie dink die ‘grappies’ was minder erg nie. Soms het dit die meeste gebyt. “My bakleiery was ’n manier om te cope, nie ’n teken dat ek enigsins gedink het dit gaan help nie,” sê hy.

PERSOONLIKHEID VAN DIE MAAND

Lorinda: Spatel agter die spa JANNIE HOUGH SY is die spatel van die spa – die dun stukkie gereedskap wat die vele elemente van ’n besigheid kan meng, klonte uitstryk en sorg dat die salf aangesmeer word waar dit hoort. As Lorinda Maritz die knop druk, loop die masjien op geoliede wiele; en as jy nog nie onder haar en haar professionele span se hande deurgeloop het nie, is daar ’n dalk ’n onnodige skroef los in jou skelet. Dit was nie altyd so nie. Sukses kom deur harde werk, fokus en bereidheid om aan te hou leer. En haar ervaring strek oor meer as twee dekades. Toe sy ongeveer 23 jaar gelede in Jeffreysbaai kom inloer het, het sy eers as opgeleide skoonheidsdeskundige vir ’n ander maatskappy gewerk voordat sy die eerste van haar vier gesogte mediese spa’s op die been gebring het. Aanvanklik was daar allerlei groeipyne en gemik en gedruk voordat spiere behoorlik wou funksioneer. Sy is ’n meisie van die Drakensberge; die sneeu by Tiffendell, en die winterstilte en die wasem as jy asemhaal – dit is haar hartsdinge. Maar sy moes eers getemper word om die vrou van vandag te wees: skool voltooi by Oranje Meisieskool, gevolg deur ’n sekretariële kursus by Pretoria Technikon (op Moeder se aandrang). Maar Lorinda is totaal nie ’n sekretaresse nie. As Lorinda Maritz die Sy hét die persoonlikknop druk, loop die heid, maar die papiermasjien op geoliede wiele. werk krap alles in haar FOTO:VERSKAF deurmekaar. Soos dit met meisies gaan – “she walked down the aisle like a good girl should,” en ’n Namibiër “followed her down the aisle like she knew

he would.” Een seun is uit daardie huwelik gebore. Maar haar oog was op verdere studie, as skoonheidsdeskundige by Jane Barrett Akademie in Pretoria. Na twee-en-‘n-halfjaar het sy haar eerste spa in Jeffreysbaai geopen en die interieur met ’n kennersoog die lyne van besigheid en gemak laat saamsmelt: minimalistiese, maar noodsaaklike meublement, uitstaande ontvangsarea, aparte behandelingskamers, sagte beligting en musiek. Dit was altyd haar begeerte – vanaf uitstekende velsorg en -produkte tot by hoogs professionele behandeling vir allerlei spier-, skelet- en ander probleme wat masseer- en manipulasie-tegnieke verg. Dié tipe besigheid vra na gedissiplineerde optrede teenoor kliënte, ’n kerngesonde etos, ’n liefde vir die taak. Dit is vir haar ’n veld waar sy mense se psige sowel as die liggaam kan bereik. Daarom bly sy op hoogte van die nuutste ontwikkeling op die gebied, bied sy slegs die beste velsorgprodukte aan en leer sy haar personeel om met deernis, integriteit en wysheid teenoor kliënte op te tree. Daarby voeg sy professionele opleiding van persone uit alle rassegroepe. Lorinda is bowenal gefokus. Geen dralery word in die werksplek geduld nie. Omdat sy ’n omgee-mens is, is haar prioriteit om slegs die mooiste gesindheid tussen werkers aan te moedig. Hier is liefde in aksie – met die nodige dissipline, en bereidheid van werkers om voortdurend kennis van hul veld te verbeter en tegnieke op te gradeer. Sy beskou dr. Bradley Wagemaker, chemikus en produkte-ontwikkelaar (wat in 2000 die Nobelprys gewen het), as mentor. Sy sou graag akademiese Sielkunde by haar repertoire wou voeg, maar om vier sentrums in drie dorpe te besit en te bestuur, verg baie van haar tyd. Tog lees sy graag (biografieë, “skokgoed”, boeke met iets om die lyf). Die lewe is te kort om tyd aan liefie-diefie storietjies af te staan. Reis is nie uitgesluit nie – Frankryk, Griekeland, Egipte, Israel, Kroasië het sy al deurgedraf en sy is nog lank nie moeg nie. En, voeg sy by, dit alles is guns en genade van Bo. En daar is Lorinda Maritz – haastig, maar gefokus, deeglik in beheer, suksesvol omdat sy wóú.“A no-nonsense girl.”

His sporting talent was spotted at an early age, so that he started training at the Motherwell Boxing Club in 1994; and the Eastern Cape Academy continued preparing him for future championships. He started off as a mini-flyweight. Pure grit, and perseverance carried him along, because funding was problematic. He had 48 fights of which he lost only a few.
