Entabeni named top citrus producer

L

OCAL farm and BEE project of The Co-op, Entabeni in Patensie, was granted the Top Producer Award of oranges in the Eastern Cape.

Independent researcher, Frudata, announced its economic survey findings for the 2015/16 season publicly where Entabeni not only walked away with the top accolade, but was also rated as 4th best on the soft citrus producer ranking. A number of criteria are set out to determine the viability, cost-effectiveness and competitive advantage of farms. Farms are evaluated against their peers in the region and/or province. “This is indeed good news for our farm. We know now that we are doing the right things and will continue to grow our farm” says Entabeni Board Chairperson Khaya Katoo. Success story From operating at a loss, The Co-op and its partners joined forces in 2014 to turn the farm into a profitable venture after only one year. This mixed farming enterprise near Patensie in the Gamtoos Valley, comprises 48ha citrus and about 120ha mixed cash crops like maize, potatoes, wheat, pumpkins and teff.

Local farm and BEE project of The Coop, Entabeni in Patensie, received the Top Producer Award of oranges in the Eastern Cape. Behind the success of the farm are Entabeni Board Chairperson Khaya Katoo, Coop BEE Manager Deon Heyns, Entabeni Administrator Crewelyn Katoo and Entabeni Project Manager Louis Nel. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

More than farming According to Co-op BEE Manager, Deon Heyns, the Orange Producer Award emphasizes the commitment and passion the part-

ners have for their business and they see it as further motivation to develop the farm. As a result of the good business practices supported by The Co-op’s financing scheme

Entabeni can now plant additional orchards and acquire new farming equipment and implements from their very own earnings. Entabeni has eight shareholders holding

80% of the shares and a Workers’ Trust owning 20% of the shares. There are 20 workerbeneficiaries on the farm, whilst the land is owned by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform. The Co-op employs expert technical staff, including agronomists, agricultural economists and irrigation technicians. These expert services, including veterinarian services, are made available to emerging farmers to enhance the production capacity of their businesses. In conjunction with Land Bank and the South African Government, The Co-op offers financing to emerging black farmers. Whilst the funds are provided through Land Bank, The Co-op is responsible for the assessment of applications, administering of facilities and credit control and the bearing of most of the risk relating to the loans. The Co-op furthermore provides farmers with project management and planning support, as well as financial and technical training to impart the necessary business acumen required to be profitable and sustainable. According to CEO Henk Agenbach, the achievement of Entabeni is in line with the Co-op’s Vision. “We want to become the leading agricultural business in Africa that ensures the development of our communities. We pride ourselves on the relationship we have with our members and partners. Entabeni is the epitome of farming inspiration.”

600 tonnes of rubbish collected SOME 600 tonnes of rubbish were collected at Jeffreys Bay this past week as Kouga Mayor Elza van Lingen moved her clean-up intervention into second gear. More than 100 community members took part in the massive clean-up, which stretched over five days and covered the areas of Pellsrus, Tokyo Sexwale, Mandela Bay and Ocean View. Mayor Van Lingen says illegal dumping sites, sidewalks and open spaces were cleared of all manner of waste, from empty bottles and dirty nappies to broken appliances and building rubble. “The cleansing teams collected more than 600 cubic metres of rubbish - that’s roughly equal to 600 tonnes - in the five days and carted it to the regional waste site at Humansdorp,” she says. “We are grateful to them for doing such a great job and making a visible difference to their communities.” She said owners of open plots where rubble or garden refuse were being kept, would also be notified to have it removed. The Mayor said casual littering and illegal

Brand ontstaan by Beesland Slaghuis DAAR was Woensdagoggend omstreeks 06:10 ’n brand by Beesland Slaghuis in Jeffreysbaai.

dumping were two of the big challenges facing communities and the municipality. “The municipality has accelerated its drive to keep Kouga clean, and we want to call on communities to join us in this war on waste. “A clean area improves everyone’s quality of life and makes for happier and healthier communities. “It also helps to create job opportunities because a clean area is more attractive to tourists and creates a good impression on potential investors.” Van Lingen says the municipality would be putting up extra signage to warn against illegal dumping and that action would be taken against perpetrators. She also calls on grown-ups to take children by the hand and teach them that littering was wrong and harmful to their environment. The Kouga Mayoral Clean-up Intervention will be moving to Humansdorp this week. Several smaller clean-ups were also held ahead of the massive Jeffreys Bay clean-up so as to help raise awareness of the need for communities and the municipality to band together in the war against waste.

Mayor Elza van Lingen and Social Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson took time out to share their vision for Jeffreys Bay with Kaylen Vaaltyn (2), Bryce Jordaan (2), Courtney Smit (2) and Raydene Jordaan (6) during the recent Kouga Mayoral Cleanup Intervention in Jeffreys Bay.

Residents invited to rate municipal service delivery THE Kouga Municipality will be running its annual Customer Satisfaction Survey over the next five weeks. This year’s survey will be the first to be conducted under the new council after the August 2016 local government elections. Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen calls on residents to make use of the platform to scrutinise the municipality and to suggest areas of improvement. “We would like to know what your service delivery experience has been over the past few months,” she says. “There is a great deal that needs doing if we are to create a culture of service excellence. The survey will help us

to prioritise our work in line with community expectations.” The Mayor says the new council had committed itself to being an accountable leadership that values inputs from residents. “When we adopted our new vision, Good Governance through Service Excellence, we understood that running a municipality was about listening and responding to the communities we serve,” says Van Lingen. She says the survey will not replace other platforms such as community meetings but was designed to enhance accountability and the involvement of residents in municipal affairs. Survey forms will be available at munici-

pal administration units, ward councillors’ offices and public libraries from Monday, June 26. An electronic version is also available on the municipality’s website at www.kouga.gov.za. Completed forms can be dropped in the marked boxes at municipal offices or posted to PO Box 21, Jeffreys Bay, 6330. Electronic versions can be emailed to msobele@kouga.gov.za. The forms have the different services offered by the municipality, with scores of 1 to 5, the former reflecting the worst opinion and the latter the best. The closing date for the survey is July, 31.

Residents to re-register for online service RESIDENTS and ratepayers who registered during the months of March 2017 and April 2017 to receive their municipal accounts via email, must re-register. Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says that data added to the system during these two months was lost when the service providers’ server crashed. “We humbly apologise for the inconvenience, and would like to assure residents that additional back-up measures have been introduced to prevent this from happening again,” she says. Those who registered during March and April 2017 are asked to contact the municipality’s Income Department at Jeffreys Bay to verify that they are still registered or to obtain a new access key to re-register. Those affected can contact Patrick at 042 200 2138, Trevor at 042 200 2135 or Centelle at 042 200 2263. Van Lingen says all residents are encouraged to register for the municipality’s online service.

PAY-points at all municipal offices will close at noon on Friday, June 30. Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says the early closure is necessary to allow the municipality to close off its books for the 2016/2017 financial year. Friday, 30 June 2017, will be the last day of the current financial year. She says the arrangement will only affect

those wanting to make payments directly at municipal offices, including the Kouga Traffic Department at Humansdorp. Residents will still, however, be able to make internet banking payments or pay at external pay-points such as the Post Office, pay@, Ackermans, Shoprite/Checkers/Usave, Spar, Pick n Pay, Pep Stores, EasyPay, My eBills and Boxer.

As hy weer agtien was, sou hy dieselfde keuses gemaak het.

Misdaadbestuur was sy kos.

Cellphone thief apprehended A suspect was arrested by police in Jeffreys Bay recently after allegedly stealing a cellphone from someone relaxing on the beach. Fidelity ADT received an alarm activation from a client close to the beachfront and dispatched armed response officer Johannes Goeda to investigate. “When officer Goeda arrived at the address, our client told him that he had been mugged on the beach a short while earlier and his cellphone stolen. The client had run back home to press his panic button in order to call for help,” says Ryan Britz, branch manager for Fidelity ADT in Jeffreys Bay. Officer Goeda called for backup and proceeded to patrol the beachfront. His colleague, armed response officer Roy Hammond, joined the search for the alleged cellphone thief. “During their patrols, our officers noticed a suspect matching the description they were earlier given of the alleged cellphone thief and apprehended the suspect. He was handed over into the custody of the Jeffreys Bay SAPS who arrested him on a charge of theft,” says Britz. “I am grateful to our team for the quick and seamless way in which they responded. This ultimately ensured that another suspect would end up behind bars, where he belongs.”

#21LIVES CAMPAIGN

Braam leads inspirational life BRAAM Kritzinger, the owner of Braam’s Motors in Joubertina, was named as one of the most inspiring people countrywide by FMI as part of their #21Live Campaign. Marking FMI’s 21 years in business, the campaign highlights residents who lead inspirational lives and achieve their goals despite stumbling blocks littering the road to success. Not being deterred by the closure of the dealership he worked for as a technician in 1997, Kritzinger acquired a loan from the bank to purchase the liquidated company. Starting with only seven personnel, Kritzinger worked tirelessly to rebuild the failed enterprise and obtain the rights to open a Toyota franchise. This savvy businessman now employs 47 people, and the dealership was voted the Best Toyota Dealership in the country last year. Kritzinger says, “When I first opened my business, I did not know a thing about selling a vehicle. I based the whole business on excellent service delivery and going the extra mile for customers.” Apart from facing challenges in his career, Kritzinger’s was diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy in 2014. Affecting the nervous system connected to one’s hands and feet, it is a source of constant pain for Kritzinger. His biggest trial to date, however, is the death of his son in January 2016. Although he will never recover fully from the loss of his son, Kritzinger finds joy in his business and in the fact that he knows his employees are committed to customer satisfaction.

KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 22 JUNE 2017

chance to win books, equipment and science equipment through their creative art and writing. In addition, the overall Grade 3 winners will have the opportunity to visit the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. Themed The Wind, the project teaches learners more about renewable energy and how clean energy is harvested from wind. The twelve participating schools form part of the Literacy Programme that is run in partnership with the Department of Education and ITEC, and is supported by the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. The schools are Chigwell Primary School, Gamtoosvallei Primary School, Graslaagte Primary School, Kruisfontein Primary School, Pellsrus Primary School, Hankey Primary School, Patensie Primary School, Quagga Primary School, St Patricks EC Primary School, Vukani Primary School, Weston Pri-

mary School and Sea Vista Primary School. Free wind ; electricity ) If the wind blows sufficiently, then wind energy is converted to mechanical energy through the turning turbine blades. ) The turbine blades transfer this mechanical energy via the shaft and gearbox (the large box on top) to the electrical generator that turns the mechanical energy into electrical energy. ) This electrical energy is then made grid compatible. )The grid compatible energy is fed from the wind turbines via a network of underground cables across the wind farm to the project substation. The substation forms the connection point between our “local” wind farm grid and Eskom’s national grid. ) Eskom’s grid then “supplies” this energy to the consumers.

Kouga Wind Farm celebrates Global Wind Day IN celebration of Global Wind Day on June 15, Kouga Wind Farm has engaged youngsters in the St Francis Bay community to educate them about the significance of harnessing wind power. South Africa is the largest wind power producer on the continent, generating 1.5 gigawatts of electricity per year and benefiting local communities through job creation and social investment, according to the South African Wind Energy Association (Sawea). In the Eastern Cape, Kouga Wind Farm contributes 80 megawatts, or enough energy to power 50 000 average size homes, to the national grid annually with a forecast socioeconomic development (SED) spend of R800 million over its 20-year contract lifespan. As part of its Global Wind Day activities, the wind farm continued with one of its core SED focus areas, that of supporting educational initiatives in its local communities, which have previously included the rebuilding of fire-ravaged Nkqubela Crèche in KwaNomzamo outside Humansdorp last year. To mark the international awareness day, wind farm representatives visited Sea Vista Primary School, which serves an underprivi-

leged community in neighbouring St Francis Bay. Here Kouga Wind Farm Community Liaison Officer Trevor Arosi shared with pupils the importance of wind energy as a renewable and sustainable resource. “It’s incredibly important for us to plant the seed of awareness in young minds. We need to educate the youth on the value of wind energy and to teach them about harnessing the power of this abundant natural resource, which is freely available to use for our daily energy needs,” said Arosi. After the information session, it was the turn of the 36 Grade 7 pupils to harness the power of wind, and their imaginations, in building models of wind-driven objects. The judges awarded category prizes for the best teamwork, best planning and most creativity shown, with an overall winning team chosen that ranked highest in all three. The winning teams received warm gloves and beanies for winter, as well as backpacks and stationery items to encourage them to continue with their educational journey. Continuing with the educational theme, the wind farm has also sponsored third-year NMMU B.Com student Ayabulela Mahamba’s trip to the International Student Energy Summit, that took place in Mexico last week.

I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life, My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

100% GEWAARBORG OF JOU GELD TERUG

Ek is Lerato.

My Name is Heidi from Eastern Cape. I have been suf-fering financially for many years, I have worked as a domestic worker, earning a very minimal salary. I used to consult many traditional healers to assist in changing my life financially. I gave them all the money to finish un-finished jobs because of that I couldn’t explain to my kids where my money was going. My eldest daughter even moved out of the house because of our situation at that time. I came across a testimony from sister Jenini from Despatch, testifying about Prof. Sally that had helped her by using Magic Rats to put money in her house on the same day. I phoned sister Jenini she explai-ned to me how her life used to be, she gave me Prof Sally’s number and I contacted her, she explained to me all the options and I chose Magic Rats to put money into my shack. I was shocked when I saw the money. I contacted her and she said it was ok for me to use the money. I paid her 25% from the money I recei-ved. Now my life is debt free, my kids are back at school and I bought a new house for my family. Prof Sally can also help with Shortboys, Magic Ring for gambling, Magic Stick for money and gals, and she also finishes unfinished jobs.

JBAY WINTERFEST: COLD WATER SWIM CLASSIC

Gear down for icy swim classic SPEEDO BRAVE

GOGGLES

SWIM CAP

Don your winter woollies this July and join top South African and local open water swimmers for the fifth Cold Water Swim Classic at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay on July 16 at 09:30. Presented by Nicholas Melck, the icy event has become one of the core events on the JBay Winerfest calendar. With water temperatures ranging from 11 degrees Celsius to a warm 14 degrees Celsius, this extreme event is the only recognised cold water swim in the Eastern Cape. Swimmers competing in the Mile or Double Mile event, can either wear a wetsuit or compete in accordance with channel rules and wear only a speedo type costume, goggles and a swim cap. Those competing in the Triple Mile event,

which is an official qualifying swim for the notorious Robben Island Crossing, are only allowed to wear a speedo. This year all eyes will be on two young swimmers, who will test their cold water swimming skills. Abriella Bredall (10) will compete in the Triple Mile event as part of her journey to become the youngest swimmer to swim from Robben Island to Blouberg. Her sister Issataya (8) has her eyes set on becoming the youngest swimmer to complete the Mile event at the Cold Water Swim Classic. The final training for the Cold Water Swim Classic will be held at Marina Martinique at July 9. All swimmers are welcome to join. Enter at https://www.zsports.co.za/coldwaterclassic.
