Society of South Africa (Wessa), who is the national implementing partner of the programme, a total of 58 Blue Flags were awarded last year, including, 45 beaches, five marinas and eight sustainable tourism boats. Dolphin Beach at Jeffreys Bay was among the recipients. Launched in 1987, the Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label that focuses on the conserva-

tion of marine and coastal habitats. It is designed to provide environmental education, raise awareness and promote sound environmental practices among tourists, local populations and beach managers. Applications are put through a rigorous multi-stage approval process involving both national and international assessments.

J’Bay to host national Blue Flag launch COASTAL municipalities from around South Africa will gather in Jeffreys Bay next month for the national launch of the Blue Flag programme for the 2017/2018 season. Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said about 200 guests, including Deputy Tourism Minister Elizabeth Thabethe, were expected to attend the launch. “It is a great honour for Kouga to have been

chosen to host the event. Our seaside towns are among the most popular holiday destinations in South Africa and we are proud to be associated with a programme that promotes excellence in the management of marine and coastal habitats,” she said. The launch will take place at Dolphin Beach, Jeffreys Bay, on October 4. According to the Wildlife and Environment

Youth Forum to be launched KOUGA Municipality would like to invite all young people and youth organisations to the launch of ward-based Youth Forum at Ward 4 in Humansdorp this evening. The target age is young people aged from 16 to 35 years old. Social Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson, said the launch of the forums for Wards 3, 5, 8 and 11 took place earlier this week. The launch of the Ward 4 Youth Forum will take place at 18:00 this evening (21 September) at the Kruisfontein Civic Centre. “The purpose of Youth Forums is to allow young people to participate actively in gov-

We look forward to getting young people from these five wards on board as well,” he said. He encouraged young people to attend the launch. “For these platforms to be successful, young people from all walks of life and interests need to get involved, be it business, agriculture, sport, school, arts and culture, faith-based organisations, politics, community policing, the unemployed and those fighting against drug and substance abuse.”

Built in 1967, the canal system has become a leading tourist attraction that is popular with both locals and visitors. So, hop on board a boat and cruise around the expansive network of canals. The water flows into places and past landmarks that cannot be accessed from the street, bringing explorers up close to some of the town’s most incredible sites that would otherwise go unnoticed. The canals furthermore offer spectacular views of the mountains of the Groot Winterhoek and nearby farmlands, and is a haven for wildlife and over 40 different species of birds. It even gives visitors a glimpse of the 1km secret beach. and linked by canals,” says MacInnes as he navigates his boat through the older side of the canals. Or as he calls it: “the wrong side of the canals” which boasts the three ugly sisters - three of the oldest houses formerly owned by three ugly sisters. There is even a blind canal, home to the only optometrist in the town. “These houses are in sharp contrast to the more modern houses on the opposite side of the canal that can cost up to R30 million,” says MacInnes. “With only 16 properties left, some 85% of properties are holiday homes. Holiday season sees the usually quiet town transform into Sandton@Sea for the rich and shameless,” says MacInnes laughingly. “But once the visitors have left, I am the stud of the town: I am a scallywag and I have a boat.” Passing the homes of the rich and famous, one enters the main canal where the oldest house Moon River - still stands proud, parallel with the river. The canals are furthermore home to 17 restaurants. For more information, contact MacInnes from The Swan of Brisan at 083 266 7824.

Anglers create innovative wheel MONIQUE BASSON TWO local anglers are set to add a design of their own to the list of man’s greatest inventions: the ultimate ‘fishing’ wheel. Tired of constantly struggling with conventional wheels on their fishing trolleys, Springbok Freshwater Angler Johan Jansen and Protea Rock and Surf Angler Theo Herbst joined forces to find the ultimate solution to their ‘flat’ problem: an all-terrain, multi-purpose and puncture-free wheel.

Starting from scratch, they perfected their invention in six months. After trying various different inventions ranging from pool noodles and tubes on empty cable reels to balloon tyres, the Ultimate Wheel rolled out. “We wanted to design a wheel that is light and wide enough not to get stuck in dry or wet sand,” says Jansen. “This one-of-a-kind wheel in South Africa, that focuses primarily on the angling fraternity, is truly unique. It is maintenance and puncture free, light weight, durable and versatile.” “A flat tyre will no longer put an abrupt end to angling trips.” According to Jansen, apart from a fishing trolley, it is also a perfect fit for a golf cart, as well as kayak and jet ski trailers. The wheel is 420mm in diameter with a vacuum formed HDP body that is UV-friendly, while the bush is made of high quality plastic. “If needed, the busy and tyre section can be replaced at a minimum cost,” says Jansen. For more information, contact Jansen or Herbst from JT Innovations at 083 671 0160 or 072 286 6697. Alternatively, send an email to JTInnova2017@gmail.com. Lilizela awards to celebrate tourism ambassadors THE Eastern Cape MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) Honourable Sakhumzi Somyo, together with the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), will celebrate tourism excellence in the province during the Lilizela Provincial Tourism Awards at the Hemmingways Casino today. The Lilizela Provincial Tourism Awards are a national government initiative aimed at promoting tourism transformation, service excellence, entrepreneurship, thriving and sustainable tourism. The awards act as a voice of the people, as the public are given a chance to share their experiences of province’s tourism offerings and establishments - by voting for what they appreciate and want to see grow. This way the tourism sector is kept competitive and continues to provide responsive services and experiences that develop the sector within and beyond. The awards also profile milestones of the tourism sector, while tabling its challenges for collective address and resolutions. Since their inception five years ago, the awards have grown from 75 entries in 2013 to 542 in 2017. Eastern Cape participants have been leading as the most active province nationally displaying a huge commitment by businesses towards responsible tourism that positively impacts the country’s economic growth. According to ECPTA’s CEO, Vuyani Dayimani, finalists and winners do not only set the standard for global excellence, but demonstrate why South Africa and its provinces, including the Eastern Cape continue to be one of the most frequently visited destinations by tourists from all over the world.

Vir verskeie dekades was hy aktief by dié stryd betrokke.

anders was as dié wat by bv. Carletonville aangewend is.

FOTO:JANNIE HOUGH

The Nifty Fifties: still going strong JANNIE HOUGH THEY are alive and well, living and laughing, travelling and belying the words of an old jingle, “Forceful fifties, serious sixties, sacred seventies, aching eighties.” They are the Nifty Fifties, an initiative started in 2000 by the present chair-lady, Margaret Crouse, to motivate fifty-year olds and older to continue socializing, enjoying one another’s company, and retaining their dignity as active and worthy members of society. The Members of the Nifty Fifties regularly undertake ventures like short tours, social gatherings, outings and an annual fashion show.

The original number of 60 members has grown to a whopping 350 active middle-aged and elderly people. Members regularly undertake ventures like short tours, social gatherings, outings and an annual fashion show. This year was no different, and the fashion show was presented in the Methodist community hall on Wednesday13 September at 14:00. The two categories were smart and casual, and ladies of the club acted as models. The show was sponsored by Milady’s for the first two years, and after that by Foschini. The ladies who jiggled around on the carpet in a feisty manner were: Daphne Brown, Joey Chapman, Sandra du Toit, Jill Pope, Des Cor-

With them were three gorgeous kids, Milan Purin, Mia du Toit and Daniel van Heerden. Some of the latest fashions were shown, noone seemed to have the jitters, and even the little ones turned out to be great models. Everything was done in a relaxed atmosphere, and a great time was had by all. Towards the end some names were drawn and guests received sponsored hampers. Tea and cake were served. The hard work was worth the while, since over a hundred tickets were sold. The nifty fifties are up and about and looking forward to some great activities in time to come.

Roos brings the fun back to his game MICHAEL VLISMAS LIKE most professional golfers, Jake Roos is searching for something. And amidst an incredible run of form on the Sunshine Tour, it seems he has found it. Roos heads into Thursday’s first round of the Vodacom Origins of Golf at St Francis Links having finished in the top 10 in four of his last five tournaments. And the fifth event was a finish of 11th. His good form has been a combination of the six-month break he took from the game in the first half of 2016, some drastic swing changes he made earlier this year, and perhaps the most important ingredient – a search for fun. “Sometimes we try too hard out here. My focus now is to do my bit, go out and play, and have fun. “The swing changes I made were pretty drastic, but they have given me a lot more con-

sistency. I’m finding myself up on the leaderboard a lot more where I want to be. “I think a bunch of things I’ve been working on has just given me a bit more peace of mind. Then again, golf is so fickle so I won’t say I have any solution to the game. I’m not trying to over-analyse it too much.” In terms of the fun side of golf, Roos has been in his element in the two-day pro-am section of this year’s Vodacom Origins of Golf series, and where he’s brought in a new innovation for the amateurs. “I bought a TrackMan golf radar at the start of the year largely for my own game. But I thought it could add some value for the amateurs and sponsors at these tournaments. So we set up on a particular hole and the golfers predict how far they think they’ll hit their drive, and then we show them how far it actually went. It’s a lot of fun.” And that’s going to remain the theme for Roos this season.
