HE Cacadu District Municipality is set to honour one of South Africa’s biggest struggle icons by renaming the municipality to the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.

relocate their head office from Port Elizabeth to Kirkwood. “We will not arrive in Kirkwood as the Cacadu District Municipality, but as the Sarah Baartman District Municipality,” Vara said at a public participation meeting held in Jeffreys Bay last

Although the majority of stakeholders are in support of this decision, which will not only have an effect on the Cacadu District Municipality but also on the nine local municipalities that fall under this municipality, some are of the opinion that the renaming is an unnecessary process. This, after the District Council supported a request by executive mayor, Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana, to rename the municipality the Sarah Baartman District Municipality at the end of May 2012. The municipality is now in the process of public participation until June at the latest when they will start with legal processes. These processes include the Section 12 Notice of the Municipal Structures Act, among other things. It is still unclear when the new name will be in place or what the cost involved will be. Portfolio Councillor for Tourism and Creative Industries, Yandiswa Vara, however, is adamant that the new name will be in place before they

of the vehicle after the brakes failed as she came down Noorsekloof on Tuesday at approximately 07:00. Leané Cilliers from Leané Cilliers Optometrists said that apart from the damage to the taxi, there is also extensive damage to the building and the boundary wall will have to be replaced.

Extensive damage was caused to the inside of the building. Photo: ERNA LOOCK

“The front part of the building will have to be broken down and completely rebuilt. The taxi hit it with such a force that the structure moved a few centimetres. We also had to stabilise the ceiling with poles for the mean time,” said Cilliers. “We are thankful that no one was seriously injured.”

Police confiscate items worth thousands THE Jeffreys Bay Police confiscated stolen goods to the value of approximately R9 000 on February 15. This follows after business owner, C’hancy Chirwa, reported a break-in at his business premise in Central, Jeffreys Bay earlier the morning. According to w/o Petra Els, the suspects gained entry to the building through a sliding door. Information received by the public, led to the arrests of three suspects Anele Nyobene (18) from Ocean View, Alex Bobi (21) from No Ten Rand and Phumlani Vumazonke (29) from Ocean View. The suspects appeared in the Humansdorp Court on Monday, February 18.

Thieves still targeting trailer wheels

EVEN though the Jeffreys Bay Police arrested several suspects, who are thought to be responsible for the theft of trailer wheels in the area, these wheels are still high on the list of local thieves. According to w/o Petra Els, in the latest incident the wheels of a trailer in C-Place, Jeffreys Bay were stolen over the weekend. During August and September last year, more than 10 cases of trailer wheel theft were reported. “Police received information that a grey Corsa bakkie with a black bonnet was seen in the vicinity at the time of the theft,” said Els According to Els, there is a market for second-hand trailer wheels. “If you have to buy second-hand tyres, please buy them from a reputable source. “The public must ensure that their trailers are parked somewhere safe, preferably inside the premises or a building. Another preventative measure is to fit special locknuts, which are obtainable from most automotive parts dealers,” said Els. Residents with information in this regard or who notice any suspicious looking vehicles or movement, can contact the police station at 0 042 200 6800 or00 079 122 8790.

Suspect hangs himself at police station MARSHELL Bambo (37) hung himself in his cell at the Jeffreys Bay Police Station last Thursday. According to w/o Petra Els, the cells are visited hourly and prisoners were visited just before 06:00 and told to be ready to appear in court. “When the police entered Bambo’s cell a few minutes after six to fetch him for court, he had hung himself with a blanket.” Bambo was due to appear in the Humansdorp Court on a house breaking case. An inquest is under investigation.

Vision 2030 maps region’s future THE Eastern Cape has embarked on a formal process to map its future, and is rolling out a comprehensive engagement strategy to involve all 6.3 million people of the province. Vision 2030 is an initiative of the Eastern Cape Planning Commission (ECPC) to engage with all sectors of society, including previously marginalised groups such as rural women and the youth, to identify development priorities for the province over the next two decades. The provincial Commission is chaired by the MEC for Provincial Planning and Finance, Mr Phumulo Masualle, who assumes overall responsibility for strategic direction. He is supported by eight eminent and highly respected Eastern Cape thinkers, transformers and achievers drawn from academia, the business community and broader civil society. Each Commissioner will provide leadership and oversight for a specific working group that will focus on key issues and challenges facing the province. These working groups will function in partnership with the Commission’s secretariat, and the many champions and supporters from across the province who have already stepped forward to become part of this milestone initiative. Far from being just another development talk shop, the work of the Commission is wholly outcome orientated. As such, it will feed directly into both the planning and executive strategies of the Eastern Cape government, as well as providing a platform for ordinary citizens to reflect on their reality and to define a new narrative about the future of the province. “The approach and work of the ECPC is not about the Commissioners or about government leaders. It is a about what ordinary people want for their future. We are committed, therefore, to this being an inclusive and participatory process,” said Commission Deputy Chair Dr Lulu Gwagwa. To ensure the Commission reaches the widest possible audience, engagement initiatives are being rolled out throughout the province with key stakeholder partners. Contact and feedback opportunities are being created across a number of platforms, including electronic, social and new media.

Speaking out against rape and abuse KOUGA staffers came to work in black on Friday to show their support for the Black Friday anti-rape campaign. The nationwide campaign was sparked by the brutal rape and murder of Bredasdorp teen Anene Booysen. Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat applauded staff for taking a firm stand against rape and abuse. “The statistics are horrendous,” he said. “It is said that every four minutes a rape is committed in our country and that only 12% of reported rape cases end in conviction.” He encouraged municipal staff to campaign actively against abuse and rape in their communities. “Abuse and rape affects everyone girls and boys, women and men. It could happen to any one of us or to someone we love. “Let us stand together and stamp out this atrocity. Together, as Kouga, we are saying ‘enough is enough’.”

Municipality up for name change MONIQUE BASSON Continued from page 1 ACCORDING to her, the ANC took the decision to change the name to Sarah Baartman in order to give recognition to the icon and the role of coloured people in the fight against apartheid. “The renaming of the municipality is not about the municipality, but about the district and its people. We hope by changing the name of the municipality that we will restore the dignity of our people and unite the people of the district.” Chief Michael Williams from the Gamtkwa/ gamtours said this name change has his full support. “We can only benefit from the name of the municipality being changed to that of an international icon. I just hope that the Khoi people will be linked with the benefits associated with her name, and not be left behind,” said Williams. “With this change, it is also my hope that the name coloured will be changed to Khoi-khoi.” Not all, however, is in favour of this name change and the procudures that were followed. According to the chairperson of the Jeffreys Bay Residents Association, Paul Haul, the association has not taken a position on any particular name change application at all. “What the association is opposed to is the improper use of state and public resources in fundamentally political whitewashing exercises,” said Hjul. “I inquired into the existence of a proper application form having been brought for the proposed name change and any other name changes so that an informed position could be made. The indication that emerged is that the intention is to establish a local names council to pursue a particular agenda and this contradicts the correct way of doing things. “The public needs to know who wishes to change the name and why a proper proposal

allows people to engage with the process.” .The nine municipalities that fall under the Cacadu District Municipality are Kouga, Koukamma, Baviaans, Sundays River Valley, Makana, Ndlambe, Blue Crane Route, Camdeboo and Ikwezi. The significance of Sarah Baarman Sarah Baartman is an international icon synonymous with the commitment to democracy by the South African Government. Baartman, of Khoi-khoi descent, was born in 1789 and raised within the Gamtoos Valley in the Cacadu District Municipality and was laid to rest in Hankey along the banks of the Gamtoos River on August 9, 2002. She became orphaned when her family was attacked in a commando raid and she was subsequently taken to Cape Town as a slave. At the age of 20, in 1810, William Dunlop, a British ship’s doctor, took her to London. There she was put on display as a human novelty, due to the fascination of the Europeans with her body shape. Her inhumane treatment was exposed and a court case was brought in her defence by the African Association, an anti-slavery group in London. When she could no longer be displayed in London, she was sold to an animal trainer in France, who also used her as if she was a circus animal. She died of respiratory illness in Paris in 1815, after which her body was dissected by a scientist named George Cuvier, Napoleon’s surgeon-general. A body cast was made of her corpse and her body was put on display until 1974. In 1994, president Nelson Mandela appealed to the French Government for the return of the remains of Sarah Baartman from the Musee de l’Homme in Paris. It was only in 2002 that the French Government finally agreed. On August 22, 2002, former president Thabo Mbeki, declared the grave of Sarah Baartman a national heritage site.

HILE electronic transactions are on the rise, many of us still regularly go to the ATM to withdraw cash for smaller transactions.

It’s a routine that many take for granted and that’s what fraudsters prey on. A recent report by the Spark Cash Index showed that the average cash withdrawal values across South Africa for December 2012 was R485.07, a 5.99 percent year-on-year increase. While this reflects a greater dependency on ATMs for disposable cash, Visa would like to caution members of the public to take special care when using this service to obtain cash – whether at a shopping mall or at the one-stop-shop at the local service station. Fraudsters will use any opportunity to commit crimes, from looking over your shoulder, to elaborating set ups such as installing a CCTV and skimmer on an ATM machine to steal information about your Visa card. Stealing your card information, will enable them to potentially create fake credit cards for fraudulent spending – all on your account Here are three potentially tricky scenarios that you may face while withdrawing cash at an ATM and suggestions how to better protect yourself from fraud. ATMs in suspicious locations You are taking a casual stroll at a leisurely Sunday market when you realise that you no longer have any cash

and need to withdraw money. You spot an ATM but as you approach it, your instincts start to tingle and you just don’t feel comfortable with your surroundings. Now, what would you do in this situation? The right thing to do in this situation is to find another ATM machine that you are comfortable using. Always be aware of your surroundings. If the ATM is poorly lit in a concealed location, or if you’re just not feeling comfortable, use another machine. Also avoid counting cash or rummaging through personal items while standing at the ATM. Watch for ‘shoulder surfing’ You are at a well-lit ATM in an area that you are comfortable with. There seems to be nothing wrong so you proceed to make your withdrawal. You’ve always had trouble with remembering your PIN, so you quickly take a peek at your note with the number. In the meantime, you failed to notice two shady characters lingering a little too close for comfort. What’s wrong with this scenario? First of all, you should have your PIN memorised and never, ever write it down. Cancel your transaction immediately if you notice suspicious activity such as someone lingering over your shoulder or suspicious equipment on the ATM itself. Also, choose a PIN that is not connected to your personal information such as your date of birth or phone number. Secondly, you should always take your ATM receipts with you. Keep

your ATM receipts to compare against your bank statements as this is one of the best ways to help guard against fraud. Furthermore, you can also sign up for email or text ‘transaction alerts’ from your bank so you can be alerted to any transactions occurring from any of your accounts in realtime. Cash trapped You’ve input your PIN and the screen shows that the transaction was successful. However, you don’t see any cash being dispensed by the machine. You assume that the machine is out of order and go into the bank to report the situation. After you leave the ATM, a figure comes by and removes a device that is attached to the ATM and removes your cash. What should you have done in the situation? You should always examine the ATM carefully for devices. Card or cash trapping devices are usually glued or taped to the card reader or cash dispenser. Also, look for ‘extra’ cameras beyond the basic and generally obvious ATM security camera. If you run into any problems mid-transaction, don’t leave the machine. Instead call the bank from the ATM where your card was taken. Visa works around the clock to ensure that your card transactions are protected worldwide, but you can still take simple steps to ensure that you (and your Visa card) are not victims. These scenarios are meant to make you aware that, although rare, crimes can happen anywhere, anytime.

Top kunstenaars by Potter’s Place Andrew Young, Fredi Nest en Lianie May

T

1C1QXTK1V-210213-KG-hs-potters

se vertonings 100% sy oorspronklike werk is. Lianie May is op 26 Februarie te sien by Potter’s Place. Haar debuutalbum, Vergeet My

Ná ’n Kerfees-album, wat baie goed ontvang is, is May se volgende album, Boeremeisie, vrygestel. Dit het

gesorg vir treffers soos Honey Honey, Skooljare, Dans Met My Baby en Die Een Wat Jy Wil Hê. In 2010 en 2011 het Lianie en Jay, die gewilde voormalige lid van die groep Eden en deesdae suksesvolle solokunstenaar, twee reuse treffers gehad met die duette In a Moment Like This en Toe Stop My Hart. Haar nuwe album, Lank Lewe die Liefde, is in Julie 2011 vrygestel. Hierdie album beloof om net so ’n groot treffer as haar vorige albums te wees. Al drie die vertoninngs begin om 18:30 vir 20:00. Vir meer besonderhede kontak Potter’s Place by 0 042 293 2500.

Prysskokke: Lewe al moeiliker vir aartappelboere ANDRÉ JOOSTE

B

Meer as twee miljoen ton aartappels word jaarliks in Suid-Afrika ge-

produseer.

Verbruikers moet by nuwe tegnologie baat vind. Letters . Briewe Sluit aan by Wavecrest Buurtwag

Besoedelde liggame

Nee!

In Kouga is waarheid skaars

Cacadu advert to name change

Disgusted South African writes: I would just like to voice my dismay at the Cacadu advert notice (Thursday, February 14) of name change to Sarah Baartman District Municipality. The municipality has not the will, knowledge or capacity to look after her grave which was erected with a lot of fanfare from the authority’s, and yet want to go to great expense to change the name. If these people (municipality) are not proud to upkeep a historical site of her, why disgrace her name. This site is supposed to be a great tourist attraction, which even had television exposure at the time. Must I say more about the running of their affairs. I personally think she would take her belongings and migrate to a better area where she will be appreciated by all. Especially the tourists that expect more from our fellow South Africans.

Location: The existing filling station on Portion 5 of Farm Krakeel No. 320, Krakeel River is to be relocated to the south-western quadrant of the same property. The already developed property is bordered by agricultural land to the east and west, a railway servitude to its north and the provincial R62 road to its south. The property is owned and occupied by the TuinroeteAgri Beperk. Description of the Activity: Design layouts indicate that one underground storage tank (UST) with a capacity of 23 000 litres, to store petrol, will be installed. Further, two 23 000 litre above ground tanks (for 2 diesel types) will be installed. A convenience store with a development footprint of ± 50 m2 is also to be included within the fuel filling station site. The existing fuel storage infrastructure on the northern part of the property and comprising two 23 000 litre, above ground diesel tanks and two UST (one 14 000 litre and one 9 000 litre) for petrol are to be removed from the property. The total capacity for the property will thus remain the same at 69 000 litres. Instinctive. Responsive. Dynamic, sporty performance takes the love of the drive to an entirely new era. New generation TSI and TDI engines and BlueMotion Technologies standard across the range offer technology today that should only be available tomorrow. It’s another reason why the Golf is so much more than just a car. It’s the car that redefines the car.

Ready. Steady. Golf.
