KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 20 JULY 2017

FOTO:VERSKAF

Jordy Smith on fire at Supertubes A sensational day of action played out at the Corona Open JBay, stop No. 6 on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) on Tuesday as the world’s best surfers delivered four perfect 10-point rides. The two-time event winner (2010 and 2011) and current No. 3 on the Jeep Leaderboard, Jordy Smith from South Africa, posted a perfect 20-heat total in his Round 3 match-up with 2017 WSL Rookie Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA).

This is only the 10th time the feat has been achieved in 40-plus years of professional surfing and the first time anyone has earned a perfect 20 at JBay. It is also the first-ever perfect heat for Smith. Despite a strong opening from Fioravanti, the hometown hero found the best waves of the heat to deliver two perfect rides. First Smith laid down two huge turns and a deep barrel for 10 points followed quickly by a dis-

play of his incredible power surfing and two more barrels for another perfect 10 to seal his victory and his place in the history books. “At this stage I just feel so blessed,” said Smith on Tuesday. “It was an incredible heat and I am so stoked to have surfed that heat. There were such unbelievable waves out there. To do it, to get 20 points in front of all my friends and family and all these local fans is also just such

an amazing thing. It is Mandela Day today, and I think Madiba was looking out for me and sent me the bombs today.” Other surfers to score 10-point rides today included Julian Wilson (AUS) and Filipe Toledo (BRA). In the penultimate heat of the day, a nonelimination heat of Jordy Smith, Filipe Toledo and Julian Wilson, a breaching Mako Shark caused the event to be called off for the day.

Business owner praises security officers A local business owner says he is thankful to two armed response officers for ‘going the extra mile’ after a recent break-in. The Fidelity ADT monitoring centre received an alarm signal from a business in Rhebok Street in Humansdorp on Tuesday 20 June 2017, and dispatched armed response officers Roy Hammond and Chris Kleinbooi to investigate. “When they arrived at our client’s premises, they found that the alarm system had been significantly damaged in a likely attempt by the suspected burglars to prevent the alarm signal from reaching our monitoring centre. Their sabotage efforts thankfully failed, and we were able to respond,” says Ryan Britz, branch manager for Fidelity ADT in Humansdorp. The officers searched the premises but found no sign of the alleged suspects. “Our monitoring centre contacted the client and asked that he come to the scene while police also soon arrived. Together, the property was searched and the client confirmed that no items were stolen. The only damage seemed to be to his alarm system,”

says Britz. The owner left the scene only to return later as he was too concerned and upset by the events. It was then when he found the officers still at the premises, making sure that everything remained in a safe condition until a technician could assist in fixing the alarm system. “I would like to thank you for the service afforded at the time of the break-in. Thank you also for timeously repairing the alarm system. Having also spent the cold night with them makes one realise that it is not the most comfortable job at night,” wrote the owner in an email to Fidelity ADT. Britz recommends that business owners make sure that their security alarm panels are located in places where any would-be criminal cannot easily or quickly gain access to them. “Contact your security company and ask them if they can help move the panel to a different spot. They can also give you advice on whether or not your system offers you the best possible protection and can recommend any newer technologies which might be available to look after your assets.”

winners in hul huise is.

Sy is moeilik vervangbaar, want daar loop yster én deernis in haar are.

Kouga Municipality cares

Kouga Wind Farm near Oyster Bay invited more than a hundred children from the local Umzam owethu community to take part in a group art project on Mandela Day to honour the values for which Madiba was acclaimed. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Kouga kids make art for Mandela Day CHILDREN in the Umzamowethu community used art to commemorate the former statesman on Mandela Day and learn about the humanitarian values for which Madiba was universally acclaimed. More than a hundred children from the local community were invited to take part in an initiative by the neighbouring Kouga Wind Farm, which saw them gather for a group art project at the Oyster Bay Community Hall. Guided by well-known Nelson Mandela Bay artists Bretten-Anne Moolman and Dolla Sapeta, the youngsters each received a mystery puzzle piece with basic outlines to colour in and decorate as they saw fit. After spending 67 minutes channelling their creative energies, the young artists signed their pieces and wrote a personal message on the reverse. These were then put together to reveal a large-format image of Madiba, complete with his inspiring words that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Kouga Wind Farm community liaison officer Trevor Arosi said the wind farm had cho-

sen to mark Mandela Bay by “promoting the legacy and ideals that Tata Madiba stood for, such as selflessness and strength in standing and working together.” He said the artwork was a tangible demonstration of the unique part that each individual played in creating “the bigger picture”. “It is extremely important that we teach our children about the founding values of our democracy, so that we can help them build a better future for themselves and South Africa as a whole,” said Arosi. The youngsters were also treated to a short educational theatre production, The Story of Madiba, in which an interactive mix of songs, drumming, dance and storytelling, in Afrikaans and Xhosa, was used to reinforce the message of forgiveness and serving others. Arosi said the wind farm would approach the municipality with a request to hang the artwork in the community hall as a reminder of Mandela’s legacy. The initiative is one of more than R6.5-million worth of education and skills development projects funded by the Oyster Bay wind farm since its inception in 2015.

Mayoral Committee members Desmond Petersen, Daniel Benson and Nico Botha were part of the municipal team that gave the Tokyo Sexwale Crèche at Jeffreys Bay a fresh coat of paint on Nelson Mandela Day. The municipality will be helping to revamp several crèches across the region in partnership with local wind farms and other roleplayers this financial year.

AFRICAN DAWN: EDUCATIONAL BIRD AND WILDLIFE EXPERIENCE

Giving animals, birds a second chance MONIQUE BASSON

B

URNT trees and desolation.

Driving the gravel road to African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary in Thornhill, one is surrounded by the devastation left by raging fires fuelled by storm winds in June. Gone are the once lush greenery and tall trees. Amid these ruins African Dawn escaped completely unscathed - from the lazy female Nile crocodile named Steve to the playful servals. This despite the fire coming within a metre of the sanctuary, says veterinary nurse and volunteer Ali Horn, who has been with African Dawn for the last 12 years. “We were on the other side of the N2 helping to remove some cattle, when the wind suddenly turned,” she says. “Within minutes the road to African Dawn was surrounded by flames. But we pushed through, got the volunteers and escaped over farm land to safety. Not wanting to leave the animals behind, the owner, Percy Hickman, rushed back to the sanctuary. However, there was nothing he could do. “Upon our return two hours later, we expected the worst. But as the smoke cleared, we slowly started to realise that not one animal was injured - not even by the smoke. “We were more traumatised than the animals.” African Dawn Getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life while taking in the sights and sounds of African Dawn, animal species mainly found in the wild can be viewed from close-up - all of this while getting a first-hand experience. It is a safe sanctuary for cheetahs, servals, caracal, monkeys, squirrels, mongooses, meerkats and crocodile, as well as numerous buck species including grysbok, grey duiker and blue duiker, Bird lovers can sit around and hear the calls of birds such as the Knysna loerie, the laughing dove and the vibrant bishop. Visitors can marvel at the beauty of the majestic black eagle and handsome Cape vultures, as well as the endangered blue and crowned cranes. And do not forget to say hello to their numerous parrot species, including the African Grey, Macaws and Cockatoos. It being home to over 250 species of birds indigenous to South Africa and further afield, African Dawn boasts the largest aviary in the Eastern Cape. It also serves as a sanctuary which takes in unwanted pets such as parrots and monkeys. To date, African Dawn has admitted over 400 birds and animals - of which some have found a permanent and loving home at the sanctuary. Apart from the animals, the entire family can be kept entertained for an entire day with braai and picnic facilities. There is even a restaurant. Rehabilitation African Dawn runs a successful rehabilitation unit. The new rehabilitation section, completed in January 2015, will see numerous birds and

animals cared for and released into the wild where possible. The beginning But where did it all start? It all started with Percy Hickman’s love for birds and animals. From a very young age, he took in orphaned and injured birds and animals. As more and more animals found their way to his loving and healing sanctuary, Hickman decided to open his sanctuary’s doors to the public. And in doing so, help foot the bill for the growing cost of feeding and caring for these wild animals and birds. The sanctuary continued to grow over the years, and in 2003 he started a successful volunteer programme to help look after the evergrowing number of residents. Visit Spend a relaxing day at African Dawn and immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings

of the park, while the kids learn more about the wildlife that surrounds them. Feed the free-roaming birds such as guinea fowl, peacocks and chicks, or enjoy a romantic picnic under the shade of an old pear tree. Braai facilities are also available. An on-site restaurant serves light meals between 10:00 and 14:00. Situated near Thornhill just off the N2 between Jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth, African Dawn is open seven days a week from 09:00 to 17:00, including public holidays. The entrance fee is R65 for adults, R30 for children between 6 and 16 years, and R15 for children between 3 and 5 years. Children under three enter free. Information For more information, contact African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary at 042 286 0710 or 083 270 3397. Alternatively, send an email to africandawn@lantic.net.

Become a volunteer ANIMAL lovers looking for something different to do, a gap year or a holiday with a difference can volunteer at African Dawn. They have volunteers from all over the world, who help out at the sanctuary on a daily basis. If you want to get up close and personal with the birds and wildlife from South Africa (and beyond), and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, than African Dawn is the place to be. Volunteers can stay from as little as two weeks to several months, or even a year. Accommodation is offered on site and meals are included.

INNOVATIVE SERIES OF TALKS HOSTED BY THE CO-OP

Farming with less water THE Co-op Humansdorp recently kicked-off a series of talks entitled “Farm Better with Less Water” in an effort to assist its members and supporter farmers during a time when water scarcity and drought is rife. Owing to the trying environmental circumstances the region is undergoing, The Co-op took the initiative to present an opportunity where experts in the field of irrigation, animal feed, climate change and farming strategies could present information to farmers on July 11 and 12 in the Tsitsikamma, Patensie, Somerset East, Kirkwood and surrounding areas, with two sessions held per day. The keynote speaker, Dr Theo de Jager, President of both the World Farmers’ Organisation and the Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU), motivated delegates to become more competitive, adaptable to technology and inventive approaches to ensure that farming remains sustainable throughout generations. “Given the factual data and the scientifically calculated projections that are nowadays available to farmers, it forewarns the farmer to adapt and adjust his/her strategy timeously to align to the environment,” said Dr de Jager. “Agriculture is the only industry that – on a larger scale and with lesser risk – can create greater prosperity if we keep

up with change.” Another speaker, Prof. Roland Schulze, discussed the effect of climate change and how carbon emissions and the greenhouse effect leads to the steady rise in temperatures and how this practically impacts on citrus, wheat and dairy farming. According to Prof. Schulze, the University of Kwazulu-Natal has a study underway that captured the past 50 years of weather and climate data to systematically determine the projected climate patterns in years to come. “One can clearly see from our projections how the daily temperatures will rise in say 20 years or 40 years from now. This has a direct bearing on the type of crops grown in a specific area; when yielding of crops will take place and the mortality of animals,” he said. “Data such as this enable farmers to plan better to mitigate the effect of climate change.” This initiative is in line with The Co-op’s strategy of bringing innovating solutions to its member and clients,” says CEO, Henk Agenbach. “Following the success of these four events, we are considering similar platforms where our valued members are provided with unique opportunities to interact with various specialist in the agricultural sector. Our aim is to pool resources and knowledge to better serve our clients.”

JBAY WINTERFEST

Cold Water Classic an icy success ICY conditions did little to deter the 33 swimmers who entered the 2017 JBay Winterfest Cold Water Swim Classic which was held at Marina Martinique on Sunday. With the water temperature dropping to a frigid 13 degrees Celsius, the Cold Water Swim presented by Nicholas Melck, lived up to its reputation of being the most extreme swim in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Some 32 swimmers managed to complete the Cold Water Classic, with nine of them choosing to swim according to channel rules - wearing only a speedo type costume, goggles and a swim cap. The bravest of these swimmers had to be 8-year-old Issataya Bredell and her 10-yearold sister, Abriella, who completed the Mile and the Triple Mile respectively. “The water was extremely cold, but I swam with my coach Brenton Williams and we were swimming from one landmark to the next until I finished the Mile,” says Issataya Bredell. “The organisers then took me into the medical tent where there were blankets and heaters and hot chocolate and it didn’t take long

to warm up.” Amy Erasmus (19) won the Women’s Mile, with Ottie Marias winning the Men’s Mile. Defending Cold Water Classic Champion Rebecca Newman successfully defended her title and finished the Triple Mile in a time of 1:22:10, with young Abriella Bredell finishing the event in a time of 1:51:56. Dieter Marais was the winner of the Men’s Triple Mile. “The Cold Water Classic is my favourite swim event and conditions were tough with the strong winds and cloudy and rainy conditions with an air temperature of 9 C, but I just love the challenge,” says Newman. Abriella Bredell became the youngest swimmer to ever complete the Triple Mile, which is an official qualifying swim for the notorious Robben Island crossing, regarded as one of the toughest swims in the world. “Things got really tough on the third lap as my goggles were too tight and they were hurting my eye, which was quite swollen after the swim,” says Bredell. “However, there were a lot of people encouraging me and they helped me to dig deep and complete the swim.”

The bravest of these swimmers had to be 8yearold Issataya Bredell who completed the Mile.
